Discovering the
‘true Poonam’
Businesswoman
gets top award
MATTHEW FIELD
East London businesswoman Poonam
Harry-Nana has been awarded the
University of Stellenbosch (USB)
Business School Director's Award for
the top student in any programme who
excels in both studies and leadership.
Harry-Nana currently works at Harry's
Printers Group, which is run by her family.
“I currently manage and oversee the
expansion of Harry's Photos and Copies which
is the digital print, communications,
advertising, signage, branding and photo
imaging leg of the business,” she said.
Harry-Nana graduated cum laude but,
according to USB director Prof Piet Naudé, was
always careful of maintaining a good work-life
balance.
“She has a passion for communities and will
continue to leave her mark through various
levels of social engagement,” Naudé said.
The MBA graduate first joined the
programme as a full-time student in 2018 and
relocated to Cape Town in order to complete
her studies.
“The MBA was one of the most challenging
and toughest experiences of my life, but also
the most liberating, life-enhancing and amazing
journeys.
“Deciding to dedicate the year to discovering
the 'true Poonam' also meant that I lived on my
own for the first time ever.
“The MBA pushed me at all levels –
personally, emotionally, spiritually,
academically and career wise,” she said.
Her research paper focuses on how and if
students felt that reflective learning techniques
and interventions aided their leadership
development.
For Harry-Nana, people should not be afraid
to ask for help and should focus on
maintaining a healthy balance between their
work and their personal lives.
“By being true to one's self and developing
your authentic leadership style and embracing
it, you can be a responsible leader that impacts
change in society at large and to view this as a
gift and responsibility in creating a better and
sustainable future for all,” she said.
SIVENATHI GOSA
Luncedo Pre-Primary School, situated
in Stoney Drift township, held a sex
education programme – “Good touch,
Bad Touch” – hosted by Masithethe
Counselling Services.
The 50 pupils who participated
were provided with information
aimed at protecting them from
potentially harmful situations.
Masithethe director Jackie
Orsmond said the children were
given knitted toys provided by
Cambridge-based organisation
Helping Hands.
“The ‘Protective Behaviours’
approach was used which is a
practical, empowering approach to
personal safety,” Orsmond said.
“It is a process that gives
knowledge on keeping yourself safe
and reporting to a trusted adult. This
is achieved by recognising feeling
safe, trusting our intuitive feelings
[early warning signs] that tell us
when we are feeling unsafe and
strategies for self-protection which
links safety and fun. the children
were taught a safety song as well.
“Masithethe’s goal is to see
members of our communities living
happy, healthy and fulfilling lives.
“To facilitate this emotional
wellness within individuals,
Masithethe contributes significantly
to a comprehensive community
programme that links HIV/AIDS,
gender violence, victim
empowerment, emotional distress
and relationship difficulties,” said
Orsmond.
She said counselling normally
dealt with emotional crisis, trauma,
abuse, violence, relationships, youth
related issues, work related issues,
loneliness, illness and feelings of
hurt, anger, frustration, rejection,
disappointment and intentions of
AMANDA NANO
The Restore Trust Foundation
held their first music festival to
celebrate the 10-year anniversary
of Breath of Life Place of Safety
on Saturday at the Old
Selbornian Club in East London.
The family friendly event saw
820 music lovers gathered in a
picnic style setting, jiving to the
tunes of various musical artists.
Restore Trust director Andrew
Rielly said they wanted to
celebrate with the people of the
city as Restore Trust and Breath
of Life celebrated making a
difference in others’ lives.
“Everyone loves music and we
use music to remember the
highs and lows from our past.
For me, it was a no-brainer that a
music festival had to be part of
our celebration,” Rielly said.
Headline act, Matthew Mole,
belted out popular tracks and his
extraordinary drum skills which
had the crowd enthralled.
Supporting acts included East
London's Jason Gladwin,
Southern Gypsy Queens and
Third Degree.
“The legalities around
organising such an event was
definitely a challenge, together
with staying on top of things on
the day of the event,” Rielly said.
Raising awareness of the work
the non-profit organisation does
was the first aim of the festival.
“We feel that this was
achieved,” he said.
Breath of Life saves babies
from being abandoned and offer
them a caring home until they
are either placed or reunited
with their families.
It also gives women who
experience “crisis pregnancies”
professional support.
Rielly said they hoped to make
this an annual event, and raise
funds at the same time.
“People in East London are
hungry for things to do where
the whole family can be
involved.
“The community can help by
attending events and by doing
so help all NPO’s or NGO’s in the
cit y,” he said.
Sunny skies to brighten weekend
Residents can look forward to clear skies, gentle
winds and warm temperatures this weekend.
Thursday will be crisp with temperatures
peaking at 20°C, with clear skies throughout.
Winds will remain mild, at just 7km/h from the
s o u t h - w e st .
The temperature rises a little to 21°C on Friday,
with a slight increase in wind speed, this time
blowing from the northeast at 11km/h. Saturday is
even warmer, with the temperature climbing to
24°C.
The clear skies will remain and the wind drops
back down to 7km/h.
Sunday will be the warmest day of all, with
temperatures rising to 28°C, accompanied by a
switch in wind direction to the southeast.

all in attendance.
East London doctor
Siyabonga Mnxunyelwa acted
as the guest speaker and said
it was important to invest in
the children’s future.
“We must write them in all
our hearts because our aim is
to give our children future
equal rights and fight poverty.
“Today, education is the best
priority foundation,”
Mnxunyelwa said.
“We must work hard to get
achievements and must learn
and love families, neighbours
and our community.”
Department of education
circuit manager Zamile Sinuka
also spoke about why
education was important.
“Each child, when they start
school, has their own dreams
and we must support them or
their dreams are going to get
lost in the mist.
“We must stop the habit of
kicking the ladder when
someone is trying to climb
because in that way we are
destroying the life skills of the
people who are struggling to
win,” Sinuka said.
Mnxesha principal Mlindi
the donation.
“We thank the Dimbaza
Nkwenkwe proved
was arrested and
committed to Fort Beaufort
Mental Hospital, eventually
didn’t deter her followers,
The Ward 41 branch executive
committee (BEC) has
responded to allegations of
corruption levelled against
ward councillor Sindiswa
S ke p e .
Speaking on behalf of the
BEC, acting secretary Lulama
Nkopo said Skepe received
R700,000 from BCM in
December 2018 which was
allocated for different
development projects.
Nkopo said it was Skepe who
came up with proposals on how
to spend the money during a
branch meeting in Zwelitsha
Community Hall recently.
“We have debated and held
discussions on how the funds
are to be used. Priorities
included the distribution of
groceries to elderly residents,
the employment of 50
volunteers as part of a cleaning
campaign, sending volunteers –
especially the youth – fo r
learner’s and driver’s licences,”
said Nkopo.
The GO! & Express previously
reported (War of words erupts,
April 11) that Skepe had been
accused of mishandling funds
and giving out tenders to
friends and relatives in
exchange for bribes.
“I know you choose your
friends for tenders and after
that, you receive envelopes with
money and drinks,” said one of
the residents during a ward
meeting in April.
will remain blue but winds will
climb to 11km/h and switch to the
Thankfully, the wind slows
considerably on Saturday,
reaching only 4km/h from the
South-East. This is accompanied
by an increase in temperature to
27°C.
Finally, Sunday is set to be the
warmest day of the weekend.
Temperatures climb all the way
to 30°C while winds remain low at
4km/h. Some cloud is expected to
blow in but it shouldn’t be enough
to affect your day.

The second annual Families
South Africa (Famsa) picnic
took place at Southernwood
Primary School in East
London, with a lot of
excitement and fun.
The celebration has an
emphasis on May, being
Family Month, and brings
parents and children together
to connect and bond.
EL Famsa director Thozi
Sishuba said this event formed
part of their Education for
Living programme.
“The programme is to
empower children with skills
while they're still young.
“Through these fun games and
activities, parents as well as
well foster parents spend time
together that they wouldn’t
normally have because of time
const raints,” Sishuba said.
Famsa social worker
Nomfundo Koom said the day
was also aimed at reuniting
families, especially where
family have been torn apart by
drug abuse.
Hercules Bootcamp was
also there to keep the children
fit in fun ways.
“I was invited to train the
children, and we did dances,
aerobics as well as a
bootcamp. I always look
forward to be part of events
like this,” Bootcamp owner
Singwa Silinga said.
PnA Stationers East
London's mascot Penny paid a
visit to children and handed
out rulers.
For mothers such as Sharon
Le Moor and Ronell Hendricks,
this was the perfect
opportunity to spend more
time with their children.
“The weekends are so short
and events like these are
always welcome. It's also nice
to get to know other parents,”
said Le Moor.
Hendricks said that events
of this nature was great so
that the children may relax
before the start of exams.

Table manner rules of today
CHARLES BENINFIELD
If you were caught using your finger or tongue to
clean your plate when I was at school as a
boarder, you were instructed to report to the
master on duty, given four of the best and told in
no uncertain terms to please refrain from doing it
again.
Okay, I draw the line at licking my plate but do I
clean my plate with my finger? Of course! How
can you let that lovely gravy be washed down the
sink?
W h at ’s more, there is nothing wrong in the
privacy of your own home to eat with your fingers
too.
Mind you, I wouldn’t pick up a piece of fish from
my plate in a restaurant but isn’t breaking off a
REFLECTIONS
... with Charles Beningfield
piece and dunking a fat chip into tomato sauce a
normal part of a fish meal at home?
And I don’t hesitate to pick up a chop or a
drumstick and gnaw at the bone when I can’t get
the last of the meat off with a knife and fork!
But lest you think I’m a complete bumpkin, I do
place great store on good manners.
When our kids were growing up, we did our best
to instill a certain level of socially acceptable
behaviour at the table, such as holding the knife in
the proper way instead of like a pencil with the top
of the shaft resting in the crook between the
thumb and index finger; sitting up straight; elbows
off the table; no talking with your mouth full and
no, you may not leave the table until everyone has
finished – that type of thing.
Reflecting in later years, however, while there is
no substitute for good manners, does it really
matter if we tilt our soup plates towards instead of
away from us?
And is it really that bad to eat pizza with your
fingers? After all it saves on the washing up.
Mind you, it’s hardly surprising that so many
young people these days talk and chew with their
mouths full, sprawl across the table to grab the
salt and in the process swish their sleeves through
the soup.
Let’s face it, a large number of them have no
table manners at all because they’ve hardly ever
eaten a family meal at a table but are slumped on
the floor or the sofa in front of the telly.
So to them, let me explain: the rules against
eating with your fingers or licking your plate when
in company have little to do with the finer points
of social etiquette.
They are there simply because the great
majority of us find the lack of consideration for
others revolting.
And talking of food, the word around East
London is that one of the local television dealers is
giving away a bag of onions free with every
television set sold – to go with the tripe!
ANIMAL LOVERS: Saturday May 25 sees the first municipal street collection for the Buckaroo
Sterilisation Project. The project was founded by local fine-art photographer Marlene Neumann. ‘We
need the help of the public to continue, it is not easy work, it is constant. After all, the dogs belong
to all of us and it is our responsibility to help them,’ Neumann said. There will be over a 100 volunteers
that will take to the streets on Saturday as well as 36 collection points stretching from Kidd's Beach
all the way to Crossways. Any old collars, food, leads and even old kennels are welcome donations. For
more information, contact Neumann on 083-321-3391, or e-mail neumann@worldonline.co.za
LETTER TO THE EDITOR...
No joy from EL municipality
East London must have the
worst municipality in South
Africa.
To get service is a task you
do not want to take on.
We applied for a rebate on
the rates and taxes, we
complied with all the forms and
information that was required
last year.
This year they require a letter
from the receiver of revenue
that we do not pay tax any
more.
What for?
I am 88 years old, retired
over 20 years ago; my wife is
77 and has never worked
b e fo r e .
The office of the receiver of
revenue replied to our request
that they do not give letters to
state that we don’t pay tax.
Yet, the municipality insists
on this, do they not know that
this is not going to happen?
So what do we do to get past
this obstacle which the
municipality put across our
p at h ?
Every year they add
something different to the
application to make things
difficult for rate payers.
‘The Lion’s Share’ lifts
lid on iconic song
MATTHEW FIELD
The Lion Sleeps Tonight has
become such a mainstay of pop
music that it’s almost hard to think
of a time when it didn’t exist.
Netflix’s latest documentary The
Lion’s Share explores the history of
the iconic song and the life of
Solomon Linda, the Sowetan singer
who wrote it.
Sadly, it’s not a happy story and
the main focus of the documentary
is how Linda was conned out of
potentially millions by publishing
companies over in Europe and
America.
We then follow Rian Malan,
author of My Traitor’s Heart, as he
and many others try and fight to
bring Linda’s royalties back home to
his three surviving daughters.
Director Sam Cullman brings in
many voices ranging from those
directly involved in the fight to
secure Linda’s legacy to musicians
who were influenced by his music,
most notably Jay Siegel, lead singer
of “The Tokens” whose 1961 version
of the song is one of the most
well-known.
Linda’s three daughters are also
given a good chunk of airtime to
share their side of the story and
seeing such a personal insight
really hammers the point home.
Sadly, Malan is the weakest point
of the documentary despite his
good intentions.
There are too many times when
he tries to make the whole story
about himself.
It gives off the impression that he
has ulterior motives for doing this.
Thankfully this aspect seems to
disappear once the rest of the
speakers are introduced.
NEED FOR SPEED: The Border Karting Regional/Club Championships Round 4 took place at
the East Grand Prix circuit on Saturday, where over 60 karts took part
FOR A GOOD CAUSE: Buffs Road Runners handed over a cheque for R33,210.08 to Arcadia Rotary from
profits made at the Jumbo Buffs Marathon & Half Marathon held last month. This money will be used
for projects in sport, youth and education. From left Craig Nelson (Buffs Road Runners), Daan Louw
Sport needs support
AMANDA NANO
The second Amathole District Track
Autumn Series Race took place on
Sunday at the Amalinda Cycle Track in
East London.
The 1,500m scratch, 3,000m scratch,
5,000m scratch and the handicap race
were the four events of the day.
Organiser Stephan Salzwedel said the
sport needed more support in the city, as
well as refurbished facilities.
“We installed new fencing recently but
it has all been stolen,” Salzwedel said.
“Though this facility got a facelift in
2010, it has gradually fallen into a
shocking state.”
Despite the problems, the enthusiastic
cyclists still continue to use the facility,
which is the only one of its kind in East
London.
Amathole District cyclist Erlank Nel
said opportunities to race between big
competitions had dwindled.
“It's awesome being here and a lot of
fun.
“It was nice when there was still the
Tribal, in terms of the amount of
competitions offered to keep everyone
m ot i vat e d , ” Nel said.
Thandile Makibeni, originally from
Aliwal North, joined the morning ride.
“A friend of mine suggested that I join
these guys this morning,” Makibeni said.
“I have been riding since 1996 and
have entered in a number of on- and
off-road competitions.”
Amathole District Cycling Club member
Gert van der Walt and Salzwedel will
compete in the 2019 Masters Track
SIVENATHI GOSA
Local sport science
graduate Ayandiswa
Sowazi has always had
a passion for sport and
physical activities.
“Growing up, I used
to play sports with my
brothers and friends,”
she said.
“After high school, I
didn’t know which
career path to pursue
until a friend of mine
introduced me to sport
science and human
kinetics.” Her dream is
to help develop young
aspiring athletes from
d i s a d va n t a g e d
backgrounds.
“After graduating, I
started looking for a job
in human kinetics.
“I didn’t want to leave
East London, as it is my
home. The big cities
intimidated me,” she
said.
She eventually got a
job as an intern at
Clarendon Primary
School, where she had
to do a course in
e d u c at i o n .
“I was in a classroom
for five years.
“During those years, I
discovered that this
wa s n ’t for me, I belong
on the sports field.
“I spoke to the
principal, which
resulted in a drastic
decrease in my salary,
but I was willing to
make that sacrifice for
the love of sport.
“It saddens me that
most of our people are
filtering out to other
places, building other
provinces, instead of
growing ours,” S o wa z i
said.
The passionate
sportswoman is t raining
athletes from
backgrounds.
She said one of her
athletes even came
third in the Eastern
Cape championships.
“During my final year
in university, we used to
go on trips where we
dealt with children.
“That is where I
discovered my passion
for working with
children because they
are still in a critical
stage of their lives
where they are still
discovering their
strengths and
weaknesses.
“One of the saddest
things I have noticed is
that pupils from
previously
disadvantaged schools
have potential, but they
lack the resources that
will help them grow
their talent,” S o wa z i
said.
She said the main
reason opportunities in
her career field were
rare was because
government was not
innovative in assisting
with finances and
resources.
