To make a long story short…in 2018, The Magic House was all about 

making things happen! 

The year began with the Museum creating and adopting a new five-year 

strategic plan. As a result, The Magic House launched Reimagining 

Our Future, a $15 million comprehensive campaign. Designed to 

address facility needs, increase community outreach and ensure financial 

sustainability, the campaign is enabling The Magic House to develop 

innovative new exhibits and programs to meet the needs of children 

and families today—and tomorrow. Thanks to extraordinary donors 

including the Kent Family Foundation, Emerson, the Crawford Taylor 

Foundation, the Berges Family Foundation, Spire and Edward Jones, 

we are reimagining all that our children’s museum can do and be for the 

community we serve.

At the end of 2018, we made Magic House history! The Museum 

announced the plans for The Magic House @ MADE, our first permanent 

satellite location in the City of St. Louis. In partnership with the Cortex 

Innovation Community and MADE STL, our new facility on Delmar 

Boulevard will ensure that the Museum’s resources are easily accessible 

to all aspiring makers, artists, designers and entrepreneurs.

Reimagining 

Our Future 

Comprehensive 

Campaign 

The Magic House opened as the St. Louis region’s first 

children’s museum in 1979. Now 40 years later, we are making 

big plans for the future and creating more magic for generations 

to come. The Magic House embarked on Reimagining Our 

Future, a $15 million comprehensive campaign to invest in the 

Museum’s exhibits, building and grounds, increase community 

outreach, and strengthen financial sustainability. 

Led by co-chairs Kim and Gene Diederich, Linda and Jesse 

Hunter, Judy and Jerry Kent, Crystal and Steve O’Loughlin 

and Peggy and Pat Sly, the comprehensive campaign is the 

result of a long-term planning process that enlisted the input of 

visitors, members, partners and key community stakeholders. 

nature play 

The Magic House made a play for outdoor exploration in June 

when we opened Nature Play, a natural learning environment 

in the Museum’s backyard. Designed to encourage families to 

connect with the outdoors, kids use everything under the sun 

including soil, water, sticks and stones to build their own natural 

creations. From concocting “pies” in a mud kitchen to splashing 

in a shallow creek bed, Nature Play provides a much-needed 

breath of fresh air for today’s screen-loving kids. This outdoor 

play place was made possible by the Mysun Charitable 

Foundation and the Sugar Creek Donor Advised Fund. 

World Traveler Gallery 

The Magic House made a world of 

difference with the new World Traveler 

Gallery, an exhibit space designed to 

promote the important 21st-century 

skill of global awareness through 

exhibits designed to celebrate and build 

interest in different cultures around the 

world. The gallery opened in June with 

Kenya’s Kids, its inaugural exhibit that 

celebrates the vibrant culture of this East 

African republic. The exhibit illustrates 

everyday life for children in Kenya, a 

country that embraces both advanced 

technology and ageless traditions. In 

Kenya’s Kids, visitors experience a rural 

home as they learn about water conservation; dress as a Maasai, one of the country’s 

many ethnic groups; learn Swahili in a Kenyan classroom; shop in an outdoor market; 

drive a safari vehicle through a nature preserve; and become a keeper at an elephant 

orphanage. Created in partnership with St. Louis’ Kenyan community, the exhibit was 

generously supported by the Crawford 

Taylor Foundation and the Dana Brown 

Charitable Trust, U.S. Bank, Trustee. 

Opening festivities included a lively 

performance by F4KIDZ, a children’s 

African arts group. 

Kenya’s Kids was the focus of the 

Museum’s global literacy field trip 

program, when Kenyan storyteller 

Catherine Ndegwa introduced students to 

the country’s language, arts and culture. 

Many of these educational programs 

were provided free of charge, thanks 

to support from the Employees 

Community Fund of Boeing and the 

Union Pacific Foundation.

Coming soon 

Thanks to Emerson, The Magic House got 

all STEAMed up! The global technology and 

engineering company headquartered in St. Louis 

made an exceptional $1 million contribution to 

sponsor the creation and operation of a new 

learning environment dedicated to science, 

technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). 

The Emerson STEAM Center occupies the 

entire lower level of the south wing and features 

the multimedia Art Studio, the Make-It 

Workshop makerspace, the expanded Math 

Path, the technology-infused Future Play 

exhibit and a brand-new Science Lab, made 

possible with additional support from Spire. This 

exceptional gift from Emerson also includes free 

educational programming for children in need.

It’s the perfect place for miniature Marie Curies 

and emerging Albert Einsteins. The Museum’s 

new Science Lab, sponsored by Spire, invites 

kids to put on their lab coats and dig into handson 

experiences that build science inquiry skills. 

From germinating seeds to generating static 

electricity, the Science Lab encourages kids to 

use real tools and equipment as they investigate 

mass, matter, motion and more. Spire’s generous 

gift also allows under-resourced schools to make 

a date and participate in STEAM Family Nights, 

free evening events when students and families 

can explore the Science Lab and other STEAM 

environments together.

In 1998, Jerry Kent made our day when he joined 

The Magic House’s Board of Directors. In addition 

to chairing the Board twice, Jerry and his wife 

Judy donated major gifts to numerous capital 

campaigns. Their generous contribution to our 

2006 campaign enabled us to create the Kent 

Conservatory, the light-filled entrance lobby for 

the expansion that doubled the size of the facility. 

Most recently, the Kent family contributed the 

lead gift to Reimagining Our Future, funding 

the renovation of the Museum’s backyard, the 

creation of a new cultural exhibit for the World 

Traveler Gallery, and generous general support 

for the comprehensive campaign. In recognition 

of their extraordinary gifts, The Magic House 

was honored to designate the south wing of the 

Museum as the Kent Family Wing.

The Berges Family Foundation helped 

The Magic House ensure that we always 

make a great first impression. The foundation’s 

remarkable support allowed the Museum to 

create a new office center featuring a prominent 

and easily accessible administrative 

entrance, an inviting reception 

area, a light-filled conference 

room and office hubs for 

professional staff. Designed to improve 

operations, enhance security, and provide a 

21st-century work environment, the Berges 

Family Foundation Administrative Offices are 

enabling The Magic House to better welcome, 

collaborate with and serve Museum visitors, 

community partners and staff. 

St. Louis City dwellers will have it made 

with a new Magic House venue closer to 

home. In celebration of our 40 th birthday 

in 2019, the Museum will open our first 

permanent satellite location in the City 

of St. Louis: The Magic House @ 

MADE. Created in partnership with 

the Cortex Innovation Community 

and MADE STL and housed on the 

second floor of MADE STL’s makerspace 

on Delmar Boulevard, this new site will 

feature a Makers’ Workshop, an Artists’ 

Studio, a Designers’ Lab, and an Entrepreneurs’ 

Marketplace. Also, a large classroom will provide 

space for field trips, after-school workshops and 

summer camps. The Magic House @ MADE 

is made possible with the generous support of 

Ameren, the Dana Brown Charitable Trust, 

U.S. Bank, Trustee and the William T. Kemper 

Foundation.

Exhibits 

forts and clubhouses 

featuring tapeScape 

In May, The Magic House got into a very sticky 

situation—on purpose! The Museum added a 

new adhesive element to Forts and Clubhouses, 

an exhibit that invited kids to jump into some 

good old-fashioned play as they built shelters 

with tables, chairs, pillows, blankets and more. 

Artist Eric Lennartson took fort building to a 

whole new level with the addition of TapeScape, 

a playscape tailor-made on site from miles of 

packing tape stretched over a steel frame. The 

experience definitely stuck with visitors as they 

crawled through the twisty tunnels and slid 

down the curved walls of this unique installation, 

sponsored by Payne Family Homes. 

Kings, Queens & Castles 

in Jennings 

The Magic House made another winning move 

when we brought our traveling chess exhibit, 

Kings, Queens & Castles, to a summer satellite 

location in Jennings. Through a partnership 

between the Museum, the Jennings School 

District and the World Chess Hall of Fame, 

we rolled out the red carpet at Gary Gore 

Elementary School, where families could enjoy 

the exhibit free of charge all summer long. 

Marking the second summer that the Museum 

hosted a satellite location in North St. Louis 

County, this free exhibit was made possible by 

Jody Tromblee Young. 

forever forest 

Visitors had it made in the shade, thanks to a 

nationally traveling exhibit that opened in the fall 

and illustrates how people use forests to live, 

work and play. Forever Forest, an exhibit created 

by the Omaha Children’s Museum, invited kids 

to branch out and learn how trees are grown, 

harvested, used and enjoyed. From building a 

home to investigating a treetop climber, exhibit 

explorers actually could see the forest for the 

trees! Forever Forest was sponsored locally by 

Wells Fargo Advisors, with a national presenting 

sponsorship by Union Pacific and a supporting 

sponsorship by NAWLA.

Programs and Events 

classrooms, as well as STEAM Family Nights at 

The Magic House where students, parents and 

teachers were provided with free transportation, 

admission, and a kit of STEAM learning materials 

to take home.

steam education 

The Magic House made the grade with education 

programs designed to promote learning in 

STEAM. Thanks to a grant from Boeing, the 

Museum implemented a district-wide STEAM 

initiative in the North St. Louis County school 

district of Ritenour. This free program for all 

elementary students featured a field trip to the 

Museum, where children participated in design 

challenges. Students developed, prototyped 

and revised their inventions created to solve a 

specific problem, from building a sound-making 

machine to fabricating a device that can propel 

a ball into a cup one foot away. In addition to 

the field trips, Boeing went above and beyond 

to also support outreach programs in Ritenour 


The Museum went full STEAM ahead to share 

our resources with other children, families 

and schools in need. For those unable to visit 

The Magic House, The Magic House came to 

them! We loaded up our “Magic on the Move” 

vans to bring STEAM-related educational 

outreach programs to under-resourced areas 

of the community. Through a collaboration 

with Carrollton Bank, Beyond Housing and 

United4Children, Museum educators offered free 

programming for young children, their parents 

and teachers in the Normandy area. And with 

generous grants from Ameren and the Express 

Scripts Foundation, we brought no-cost handson 

learning to disadvantaged schools throughout 

North St. Louis County. 

Nights at the Museum were equally STEAMy, 

thanks to the support of Mastercard, Maritz and 

Watlow. These corporate partners sponsored 

STEAM Family Nights, evenings at The Magic 

House that feature free admission and bus 

transportation to the Museum, as well as an 

array of STEAM activities and a kit of supplies for 

families to extend STEAM learning at home. 

robotics days 

On certain days in winter and spring, robots 

made their way to The Magic House — and we 

were happy about the invasion! Teams from 

FIRST ® Robotics throughout the St. Louis area 

took over the Museum for Robotics Days, 

events designed to showcase these amazing 

androids in action. Visitors got the chance to 

meet these young inventors and their mentors as 

they learned all about building better bots. This 

friendly robot uprising was generously sponsored 

by Mastercard.

naturalization ceremony 

In April, The Magic House opened our doors 

to 30 new Americans-in-the-making for the 

Museum’s first-ever Naturalization Ceremony. 

Conducted by U.S. Magistrate Judge 

Patricia L. Cohen, the ceremony included 

immigrants to St. Louis from around the world 

as they took the Oath of Allegiance, the final 

step in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen. 

The ceremony was organized in partnership with 

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and 

took place in the Legislative Chamber of the 

Museum’s Star-Spangled Center. Following the 

ceremony, the new citizens and their families had 

the opportunity to explore exhibits on American 

history and government, then register to vote 

with the help of the League of Women Voters of 

Metro St. Louis. 

In June, a pint-sized version of the proceedings 

took place when The Magic House hosted a 

Children’s Citizenship Ceremony. Even though 

children automatically gain U.S. citizenship 

when their parents are naturalized, the occasion 

gave us the chance to help these kids make 

themselves at home in their new country. 

great friend to kids 

More than 35 years ago, The Magic House made 

friends with the Monsanto Fund. Now known 

as the Bayer Fund, the company’s philanthropic 

arm has had an enormous impact on the 

Museum. From their lead gift to our Making More 

Magic capital campaign in 1995 to the most 

recent grant for a health and nutrition outreach 

program in 2018, the Bayer Fund has generously 

helped us grow a bumper crop of exhibits and 

programs. For their extraordinary support of The 

Magic House and the children we reach through 

their gifts, we presented the Bayer Fund with the 

2018 Great Friend to Kids Award. 

A grand safari 

Inspired by the Kenya’s Kids exhibit, The Magic 

House’s Grandparent Committee celebrated 

with their fundraising event, A Grand Safari. 

Grandparents, grandchildren and other voyagers 

enjoyed an expedition through the exhibit 

and raised more than $35,000 to benefit the 

Museum’s Grandparent Scholarship Program. 

A magical night of trivia 

Did you know that The Magic House’s Young 

Professionals Board holds fundraising events 

throughout the year to support the Museum’s 

mission? This is no trivial pursuit! The group 

raised more than $44,000 for the Access for All 

initiative through a trivia night in February, as well 

as two adults-only play dates at the Museum in 

the spring and fall.

passport to the world 

The Museum’s Friends Committee hosted 

The Magic Ball: Passport to the World at the 

Stifel Theatre in October. Hundreds of partygoers 

packed their bags for an evening of international 

excitement, all to benefit The Magic House’s 

Access for All initiative which provides free 

educational programming for children, families 

and schools in need.
