I know that you like the thrill, excitement and fear
of roller coasters. But what happens when things
go terribly wrong causing someone's life. Read
more to find out about the top 3 worst accidents
on roller coasters ever in history.
The History of Roller Coasters
The history of
roller coasters
went back to the
mid-1600s. Back
then the Russians
developed a form
of
gravity-powered
thrill. It was a
Russian ice slide.
Riders would
make sleds out of
ice blocks and
descended
timber chutes
that were packed
with ice and
snow. These ice
sleds were very
popular. The first
real roller coaster
opened in
1884. It opened
up at Coney
Island in
Brooklyn New
York. It was
called the
switchback
railway. It was
invented by
LaMarcus
Thompson. It
traveled six
miles per hour
and costs 5¢. It
was an instant
success and by
the end of the
century, there
were hundreds
of roller
coasters in
America. Roller
coasters are scary
because that's the
point of them.
They are
supposed to be
fun but
sometimes they
do mess up
causing people's
lives. But that
chance that you
will die on a
roller coaster is
actually very low.
There is more of a
chance of you
falling off your
bed and dying
then you die on a
roller coaster.
You have a 1 in 24
million chance of
dying on a roller
coaster. And you
have a 1 in 423,548
chance of falling off
your bed and dying.
This is true but
some people were
very unlucky and
got majorly hurt on
roller coasters.
Here are the top
five scariest
moments of all
time on roller
coasters.

1On the day of 30 May 1972, 5
people died and 13 people were
injured at The Battersea Big Dipper
in London. 31 had bordered the
three-car wooden train in the late
afternoon. As it reached the top, it
detached from the drive train too
early. The brakemen tried to make
the train stop it didn’t work. The
train slipped backward under its
own momentum on a 1 and 3
gradient. When the train got to the
bottom, it took a tight turn and left
the tracks. The lower carriage was
crushed by those behind. That’s
when two teenage boys and an
eight-year-old died, and two other
children died later. Here is an
interview from someone who
survived the ride when it happened.
Her name is Mesheilab. “We sat
down in the back carriage but we
wanted to get the front carriage.
The carriages slowly climbed
towards the top that was 120 feet.
The rickety wooden structure of the
ride creaked its way along. The
carriages didn’t make it to the top.
They became detached from the
railroad. The train started to slowly
roll backward. I looked behind me
and the brakeman had a look of
horror on his face as he was
frantically pulling the large steel
brakes.

As we were catching up speed his
face became even more scared. I
realized that we were going to crash if
he couldn’t gain control. The screams
of joy became cries of terror. The
braked failed and we tumbled down
the track towards the start of the ride.
With the speed the train had we
couldn’t make a turn and the rear
carriage derailed, crashed into the
barrier and crumpled, taking the full
force of the other two carriages.
When we crashed there was silence.
Then people started screaming and
crying. The fun of the roller coaster
ended in tragedy. You might be
wondering what happened after the
accident. Well, the park manager and
the coasters engineer were charged
with manslaughter, they were cleared
at trial though. But this accident
ended the coaster and the park. The
Big Dipper was closed and
demolished. The Fun Fair shut it’s
was closed in 1974.

Big Dipper, Krug Park, 1930
On the Big Dipper train at,
Krug Park on July 24, 1930,
something terrible happened.
The Train’s four cars were
loaded as the headed up for
the first incline. That’s when a
piece of the brake got loose
and jammed the wheels on one
of the cars. It fell off the track
plummeting 35 feet down to
the ground. Because of the
coasters lift chain, it pushed
the other three cars over along
with the first one. This caused
four people to die and Injured
19 others. When the carriage
crashed Andrew Bazias
declared that the cog of the
chain continues to pull the train
downward after the first one
had plunged down. Right after
the crash, there was a crowd of
people screaming about the
scene of the reck. The park
was packed and all the
available police rushed to the
scene. The rescue crew
reached for the injured

get to hospitals. The police
were forced to tear down
sections of the fence in order
to get them to the
ambulances.“After the terrible
accident happened the
business declined after the
disaster, forcing Krug Park to
close by 1940. In 1955 this
land became a city park due
to campaigning. This site is
Gallagher Park. It has a
swimming pool and baseball
field.

The Ride of your
Roller coaster accidents like
these ones are very unlikely to
happen. But sometimes they do
happen and they turn out to be
really bad like these three. For
the worst crash in history, 5
people died and 13 people were
injured. That’s awful and one of
the people that died was
eight-years-old. Just imagine
dying that young. But, that
never happened again because
the park was shut down for
good after the accident. For the
second worse accident on roller
coasters, 4 people died and 19
were injured. This accident was
horrifying because the train fell
off the tracks and went
plummeting down 35 feet down
to the ground. That’s so scary to
imagine. After this accident
happened the Krug Park had to
close due to the accident. But
now it’s Gallagher Park which
has a swimming pool and
baseball field. Lastly, for the
third-worst accident on roller
coasters, 3 riders died and 15
people were injured. This is the
worst indoor roller coaster
accident ever in history. After
the accident happened it was
shut down to make
improvements but then came
back and is now called
Galaxyland. So, maybe next
time you might think a little
more before going on a roller
coaster.

Mindbender, Fantasyland, 1986
The day after Alberta province
safety inspector declared this ride
safe this tragedy happened. The
train went around a turn at 60 miles
per hour, gaining momentum for
the first three loops. But before it
got there the rear car began to
fishtail. When it got to the third
loop, it stalled at the top and began
to leave its tracks sliding backward
into a concrete column. Three
riders died and 15 were injured.
Chayko was on the roller coaster
while this tragedy happened. He
went with his friend who loved fast
rides. They were the last ones to get
on the Mindbender and sat down in
the last car. I remember feeling it
sway and grabbing onto the handle.
“The next thing, I was landing on
the ground. The crash shattered my
lower legs, crushed half my left
shoulder and broke my feet, pelvis,
lower back and every rib on my left
side. After six months in the
hospital I ditched the braces and
doctors removed my plates from my
legs” Chayko continued working for
15 years but then retired because of
chronic back pain. This crash was
the worst indoor crash ever in
history. So you might be wondering
what happened after the crash.
Well,
Investigators determined
that missing bolts in a wheel
assembly caused the
accident. The ride was closed
for several months while
operators made
improvements to the roller
coaster. The number of seats
per car was reduced from 16
to 12, and the number of cars
in the train was reduced
from four to three. Now the
park’s name is Galaxyland
and the Mindbender has
been accident-free since the
tragedy happened.

The Beast
History on the Beast
Son of Beast was a record-breaking wooden
roller coaster located at Kings Island in
Mason, Ohio. Built and designed by the now
defunct Roller Coaster Corporation of
America, it opened to the public on May 26,
2000, and was themed as a sequel to one of
the park's other signature attractions, The
Beast.
The beast came to kings island in 1979
Built in-house by the park, it opened in
1979 as the tallest, fastest, and longest
wooden roller coaster in the world..
The wooden roller
coaster is 7,359 feet
long, has a top speed
of 64.8 mph, and is
known as the world's
longest wooden roller
coaster.

The Banshee
History on The Banshee
The banshee came to kings island April, 18.
2014. Designed and built by Bolliger &
Mabillard. It is the first ever banshee out
there. The banshee is the world's longest
steel inverted roller coaster.
People really like the banshee because they
say it's a twisty fun ride. The banshee is a
thrill ride and if you like fast twisty rides
you’ll definitely like to ride the Banshee.

Mystic Timbers
History on Mystic Timbers
Mystic Timbers is a wooden roller coaster located at
Kings Island in Mason, Ohio Opened in the park's
Rivertown section on April 15, 2017. Mystic timbers is
3,265 feet long. It goes 53 MPH
“The track is 3,265 feet in length
and can reach 109 feet in height
and weave along steep cliffs,
down ravines, cross over water
and go through an extreme S-turn,
among a forest of trees. The ride
design looks like a 1960's pickup
truck and has three trains with the
lead car.”

Imagine that you’re just surrounded by

on the side of the street. The sweet smell of
pastries, popcorn, ice cream, cotton candy,
and more! The sweat dripping down from
your face from being in the sun. Then you
look up and all you are at Disney World. You
just have become one of the 20 million
visitors at Walt Disney World in Orlando
Florida. Have you ever wondered, out of all
the rides at Disney World what are the top
5 rides?
Ride #5
The 5th ride is The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
People must be 38 inches to be able to
ride. The ride opened to the public on May
28, 2014. The ride is located in the Magic
Kingdom in fantasyland. The ride is for all
ages.
When you are on the Seven Dwarf mine
train, each cart rocks side to side while it is
running on the track. When you go on the
ride, you go through a part that shows the
seven dwarves singing. The dwarves are
made from reused parts from the old Snow
White’s Scary Adventures ride.
It’s a good fun thrill ride for all ages. If you're
in the mood for a smooth ride that still has
some twists and turns, this is a ride you will
enjoy. If you do want to ride the ride, I would
suggest getting a FastPass because the wait
time for the line can be over an hour.

Ride #4
The 4th ride is Test Track
On March 17, 1999, Test Track opened. Test track is a ride that is sponsored by
General Motors. You get to design your own car and measure the
performance with different tests. It feels like your testing the car that you
made. You go through different simulations like making sharp turns uphill,
avoiding a truck, and going through harsh weather. The last part is the most
thrilling. You get up to 65 mph in just in 8.8 seconds while you are going
around a big outside track.
The ride is known for getting up to 65 mph in just 8.8 seconds. You also get to
design your own car and test it when you're on the ride. The ride is located
at Epcot.
It is diffidently worth your time because if you’re in the mood for speed,
sudden stops, and hills then go on this ride. The wait time can be over an
hour but if you want to avoid the long line without getting a FastPass, then I
would go as a single rider. The single rider line is where you get to fill up any
empty seats with other parties. You could also try to wake up early and try
to get to Epcot right when it opens and head straight to Test Track and then
you’ll be able to squeeze that ride in.
Ride #3
The 3rd ride is Space Mountain.
The ride is located at the Magic Kingdom. Space Mountain is the oldest ride in
Florida and in every Disney World and Disney Land they all have a Space Mountain
except for the Shanghai Disneyland.
Space Mountain is one of the oldest rides at Walt Disney World but still one of the
most popular rides throughout all of the theme parks. Space Mountain opened on
January 15, 1975.
The whole ride is in pitch dark. It has sharp turns and quick little drops. It is
definitely a thrill ride and I would recommend going on it but not if you have
motion sickness. If you want to get on the ride you will want to get a FastPass
because most of the time the wait time for the ride is either an hour or over an
hour. The seats are single and can only fit 6 guests.

The 2nd ride is Rock 'n' Roller
Coaster
The ride is located in Hollywood Studios. The ride
opened on July 29, 1999. The engineers started to build the ride
in February 1998. The backstory of the ride is that Aerosmith is
running behind to get to a concert and they give you
backstage passes. You get something called a super stretch
that’s really fast to get to the concert. The ride is supposed to
be about how you get to the concert.
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster shoots you up to 57 mph in just
2.8 seconds. There are 2 rollovers and 1 corkscrew. The two
rollovers are right at the beginning of ride when you get shot
up to 57 mph. Then the corkscrew happens in the middle of the
ride. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is the only ride at Walt Disney
World that goes upside down.
This is one of the rides that you need to ride if you go to
visit Disney. It is one of the fast thrilling and loopy ride. One of
the best parts in Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is where you get shot
up to 57 mph and then 2 rollovers right after. It feels like your
getting shot out of a canon. The G force is 4.5G. G force is the
amount of acceleration and weight pushing up against you.
You would want to get FastPasses for this ride because this
ride is one of the rides that usually have a really long line.
Another option is just going single rider. It is diffidently a thrill
ride.

The 1st ride is Twilight Zone Tower of
Terror
Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is located at Hollywood Studios.

Tower of Terror opened July 22, 1994. The original Tower of Terror
was built at Walt Disney World. Then they decided to build more at
other Disney Theme Parks. The ride was inspired by a T.V show
called The Twilight Zone.
The ride is basically a big drop tower. The drop is 131 feet and
the speed it 39 mph. It is one of the scariest rides at Disney if you
don’t like free falls. Tower of Terror has the biggest drop on a ride.
It is worth your time if you are interested in free drops and rides
that are in the dark. The ride can hold up to about 16 guests. Tower
of Terror is a fun, scary, in the dark thrill ride.

What is Cedar Point known for? Cedar point is an
amusement park that is located at 1 Cedar Point Dr,
Sandusky, OH 44870. The park is filled with extreme
roller coasters that have HUGE drops and loops. If
you want to visit then You should order tickets.
For one-day admission the tickets cost $72 at the
gate for the people that are 3-61 who are 48
inches tall or taller with their shoes on.
For juniors and seniors its $45. You have to be
ages 3-61 and under 48 inches tall in shoes or
those ages 62-plus.

FastPass
Imagine waiting in a long line in the hot humid weather. Feeling the
sweat running down your face. It is just so hot that your mouth is so
dry and you need water. Then go book some fastpass+.
You don’t want to wait in a line for and hour or longer at
Disney World, then you would want to go get some fastpasses. At
first you can get 3 fastpass+ at each park per day. Once you use up all
three fastpass+, then you can start getting a fastpass on at a line
though. The way to scan your fastpass you can choose to use a card or
something called a magic band. I would suggest to get the magic
band because it is easier to keep track and not lose it. Today people
usually use magic band.
Magic band are just so useful. You can do lots of things with
magic bands. If you end up getting fast passes then you can scan your
band to access the fastpass. Magic bands don’t just allow you to
access your fastpass, you can also open your room by putting your
magic band up to a black rectangle-ish box. If you visit a gift shop
and want to buy something then you can just buy food or items with
your magic band. If you go to Disney the next time the I would
suggest to go get some Magic bands and Fastpass+.

I’ve always loved the excitement, thrill, terror of going to
an amusement park. I’ve gone to lots of different
amusement park and all of them are amazing. I love
going to Disney World because it is so special and it’s a
very fun place with family. Everything about amusement
parks are fun. Hanging out with friends, the food, the
rides, etc. It is such a fun place to go with family and
friends. The first time I went to Disney World I instantly
loved it. I know no one that doesn’t like Disney World.
It’s such an amazing place to stay and be at. I also love
other amusement parks like Kings and Coney island. The
rides are so fun! I love the thrill and excitement. Every
roller coaster is different and they are all so thrilling.

Letter from the Editor
Every time I go to amusement park, I love it every
time. No matter how many times I go to the same
park, I still love the activities it has there and the
people that I go with. Basically each year I go to
Disney World or a Disney Cruise I love every
minute of it. Right when i step on the cruise or into
the park, it is an amazing time of my life. It is just a
increicaly place to go with friends and family. Their
food is also just so delicious.
