Welcome to
Royal Show 2019
Something for
everyone
THE 169th Royal Show opens its
gates on Friday, 24 May.
Our focus is on introducing
“town to country” and affording
guests an educational and funfilled
experience.
The Royal is South Africa’s
largest mixed agricultural show in
terms of catering for livestock and
equipment. In 2019, this includes
the hosting of the Hampshire
Down National Sheep and National
Dexter Cattle Championships.
The large presence of agricultural
implements is of interest to
farmers and the public alike, and
the occasion is frequently used
for introducing new models and
brands.
Included in the 2019 Royal
Show mix is KZN’s largest annual
display of birds, rabbits and honey
products, each of which includes a
purchase and educational component.
This complements the
Natural Wool and Fibre Expo and
the display of indigenous livestock
in the sheep section.
Aside from agriculture, the
Royal Show continues to cater for
a broad mix of 450 or so commercial,
industrial and service
sector exhibits, including informative
and professional displays by
the SANDF and SAPS, amongst
others. Indeed, #something for
everyone.
ENTERTAINMENT GALORE
No visit to the Royal Show is complete
without entertainment, and
2019 again promises to excite the
senses and ensure a memorable
time for young and old.
Visitors can look forward to:
• The East Coast Radio Royal
Rock Concert, featuring Sutherland,
Holly Rey, Kyle Deutsch and
Goodluck, on Saturday afternoon,
25 May.
• The Royal Symphony Concert
Terry Strachan
CEO, Royal Agricultural Society
on Sunday morning, 26 May,
themed “Power of the March to the
elegance of the Waltz”.
• The RSG Concert on Sunday
afternoon, 26 May, featuring
Tussen Sterre, Sonja Herholdt,
Snotkop, and Ricus Nel.
• The Hindvani FM Eastern
Extravaganza will see a fusion of
entertainment, from flash entertainers
to Bhangra, on Saturday
evening, 1 June.
• The final stage show, the
Sisonke Concert, on the afternoon
of Sunday, 2 June, wraps up the
Royal Show with a mix of entertainment
with a jazz theme.
• A full equestrian programme including
Boerperd, Show-Jumping,
Dressage, Childrens and National
Showing Classes is also being
run.
• The return — on the second
weekend of the show — of the
Harvard aerobatic display, under
the banner of the ‘Puma Flying
Lions’.
• The evenings of Friday 31 May
and Saturday 1 June will see the
return of the “Monster Flight Night
Show” incorporating local and
international freestyle Motocross
riders performing the latest stunts.
A professional display of the highest
order, it incorporates pyrotechnics
for effect.
• Also returning in 2019, is the
Royal Demolition Derby, where a
team of professional stock car racers
take on each other, by way of
motorised destructive power.
• With the focus on creating
awareness, Working on Fire will be
hosting three lunch-hour demonstrations
for schoolchildren.
• An interactive “Strongman Display”,
allowing for the participation
of youngsters, is scheduled to take
place on two occasions during the
course of the final weekend of the
Show.
• Sunday morning, 2 June, will
see the main arena hosting the
schools “Rock ‘n Royal Marimba
Fest”. The talent of these youngsters,
and the visceral tone and
uniqueness of this African instrument,
will ensure a pleasing
experience for any member of the
audience.
• The continuation of the Powasol
Enduro-X series will — under
the auspices of Motorsport South
Africa — again take place in the
Cattle Arena on Saturday 1 and
Sunday 2 June.
• The “Cattle Gold Cup Parade”,
where upwards of a hundred of
the crème de la crème of South
Africa’s livestock will be paraded
in the main arena prior to the presentation
of awards. This will take
place early on Wednesday evening,
29 May, and the spectacular
occasion is open to all.
• National dog agility trials on Friday
31 May, and Saturday 1 June.
• The River Stage will include a
mix of informative entertainment
including shark dissections and
the appearance of the “Russian
Scientist” by way of conducting a
range of educational, but fun-filled
experiments.
• Skydiving displays on Saturday
25 and Sunday 2 June.
• The return of the Karkloof
Canopy Zipline, as well as the
province’s largest fun-fair.
• This, and much, much more is
what you can expect at this year’s
Royal Show.
NEW ADDITIONS
An upgraded Bagjump will be
returning to the show for the first
six days, following an absence of
three years. Experience the thrill
of the “Freefall” — a no-stringsattached
jump into a giant inflatable
landing mattress, from an
18m high scissor lift platform; not
too far off the height of a 5-storey
building.
The 2019 Royal Show will also
be including a 20 x 10 metre skating
rink, sufficiently large enough
to cater for sixty skaters. Although
not constructed from ice, the
artificial fibre surface in every way
resembles and replicates the “feel”
of the genuine article.
Visitors from the Greater Durban
area may be interested in
combining a visit to the Show
with a train journey, departing and
returning to the Kloof Station.
VALUE
Focused on adding value to
exhibitors and visitors alike, gate
entry will be R45 for all persons
on both Fridays of the Show. In
addition, 31 May will be known as
“Super Friday”, where a number of
exhibitors and caterers, including
the funfair, will be offering special
discounted packages.
The 2019 Royal Show acknowledges
with appreciation its partnership
with Coca-Cola Beverages,
First National Bank (FNB)
and East Coast Radio (ECR).
Managed parking is available
on the Voortrekker Sportsfields,
directly opposite the main gate
into the Showgrounds, at R20 per
ROYAL SHOW CARCASS AUCTION 2019
This year a national live stream will take the auction to the entire country
THE Landbouweekblad Royal
Show Carcass Competition and
Auction — the most prestigious
event on the South African red
meat calendar — will take place at
3.00pm on Tuesday afternoon, 28
May in the Sheep and Goat Arena
at the Royal Showgrounds.
This popular event is sponsored
by Landbouweekblad, RPO, The
Royal Agricultural Society, De
Heus, BKB and Booysens Refrigeration.
This is a splendid occasion for
buyers, butchers and restaurants
to compete for lamb, beef and
pork judged to be the best in the
country. It is also an opportunity
for winning bidders to capitalise
on the exposure and publicity this
brings their establishments.
This year a live stream of the
proceedings will be broadcast on
the Royal Show’s Facebook, and a
cheese and wine event will follow
the auction.
The following carcasses will be
auctioned.
Beef
The Champion, First Reserve,
Second Reserve, Champion
Group of Three, Reserve Champion
Group of Three and the
Super Beef carcass. The remaining
carcasses will be sold by the
abattoirs in terms of their standard
operational procedures.
Whilst not forming part of the
SAMIC competition, by way of a
special ‘add-on’, a Wagyu carcass
will be auctioned.
Lamb
The Overall Champion, First
Overall Reserve, Second Overall
Reserve, Champion European
Genetics, Reserve Champion European
Genetics, plus the top 12
Groups of Three. This will equate
to approximately 40 carcasses.
Those remaining will be sold by
the abattoir in terms of their standard
operational procedures.
Pork (commercial)
Whilst pork carcasses will not be
displayed, the Champion, First
Reserve, Second Reserve, Champion
Group of Three, and Reserve
Champion Group of Three will be
auctioned. The remaining carcasses
will be sold by the abattoirs in
terms of their standard operational
procedures.
Pork (emerging farmer)
Whilst not on display, the Champion
and Reserve Champion will be
auctioned. The remaining carcasses
will be sold by the abattoirs in
terms of their standard operational
procedures.
The following general points
should be noted:
• Unless the buyer wishes to arrange
collection, all carcasses
auctioned will be delivered by
the abattoirs (free of charge),
the proviso being that this is in
their normal delivery area.
• Format to be on a cents-perkilogram
basis.
• The media will be in attendance
to ensure maximum
exposure for both buyers and
sellers.
• Buyers interested in purchasing
exhibition grade carcasses
not being auctioned are invited
to liaise with the abattoirs
directly (during the course
of the week commencing 20
May). Contact details will be
provided on request.
• Telephone bidding is possible
by arrangement.
• Processing, packaging and
delivery can be arranged.
• Convenient, complimentary
parking and access will be
made available to confirmed
bidders who arrange with the
Royal Show office in advance.
10 Royal Show 2018

AFRIKAANS pop group Tussen Sterre was arguably one of the biggest breakout
acts of 2018.
After the success of their debut album “Kosmies”, which included the hits
“Wonder Steeds”, “Vir Ewig ‘n Goeie Tyd” and “Hemelrym”, which features
Bouwer Bosch, the trio released the single “Jonk in Afrikaans” late last year.
The trio — SJ van Dyk, Martin Clifford Earle and Jan Mattys van Lill — draw
inspiration from big guitar, rock and blues, and artists like John Mayer, Ed
Sheeran and even Josh Groban. The band was nominated in the Newcomer
of the Year and Best Rock Album categories at the 2018 Ghoema Awards, and
walked away with a Ghoema for the Public’s Favourite Duo or Group. They are
currently performing across the country and are energetically composing
new music for their second album while working hard to refine their sound.
Catch Tussen Sterre at the RSG Concert on the afternoon of Sunday 26 May
in the Royal Show’s Main Arena starting at 2.15pm.
AWARD-WINNING, chart-topping GoodLuck is the headline act for Royal Rock 2019 at the Royal Show.
GoodLuck’s sold-out live shows — which have taken the band around Europe, Asia, Africa and the UK, and across global
stages alongside everyone from Groove Armada, Basement Jaxx, Pet Shop Boys, Paul Oakenfold and Lost Frequencies to Robin
Schulz and pop icon Pharrell Williams — are redefining the possibilities of live electronics.
Their global sound is rooted in the rhythms of Afrobeat, Afro house, tribal music and African drums, with a modern electronic
edge with global crossover appeal.
The studio is where the trio create their magic, but the stage is where it all comes to life. GoodLuck’s pioneering tech setup
features drum machines, synthesizers, electronic percussions, saxophone and vocals, as well as a complete recording studio
onstage. This gives the band endless flexibility, allowing for experimental improvisation and crazy amounts of instrumentation in
their high-energy performances.
The Cape Town-based band — Ben Peters (producer/beats/electronic percussion), Juliet Harding (vocals/production/songwriting)
and Matthew O’Connell (live synths/saxophone) — are renowned for their innovative, high-energy live performances.
But in spite of their success, GoodLuck retain their love for songwriting and storytelling, and their deep connection to their
fans.
“As a musician, you’re making a song that does not belong to you—it belongs to the audience, the listeners, the fans,” says
saxophonist and keyboardist Matthew O’Connell. “The most important thing you have to do when creating music is to give them
the best soundtrack for whatever it is they’re going through. Music is sometimes the difference between life and death; it’s the
song for the most important day of someone’s life. We have to remember that our music is not just about us, but about connecting
with the listener. This is the soundtrack to your life, and GoodLuck knows that our purpose is to make it the best it could be.”
TENTPEGGING
IF you find threading a needle challenging,
imagine the concentration and skill needed to
control a horse with one hand at a full gallop
over 100 metres, while using a sword or lance
to pierce and lift a small object. This is what the
tentpegging teams competing on the first weekend
of the Show will be doing.
Previously known as gymkhana, tentpegging
originates from the cavalry exercise of removing
wooden ‘tent pegs’ from the ground while on
horseback, using a sword or lance at full gallop.
The sport is around 2 500 years old and was
developed by Asian armies, who relied on their
skill with the lance to defeat their enemies.
Today tentpegging is a sport that includes
both individual and team events, and requires
equestrian skills similar to those of polo and
polocrosse.
Take a break from walking around the showgrounds
and watch these talented teams on Friday
24 and Saturday 25 May in the main arena.
THE POWER
OF THE MARCH
THE ELEGANCE
OF THE WALTZ
IT’S possible that this year’s Royal Symphony Concert will have
people actually on their feet. The robust rhythms of marches and
the lilting sway of a waltz do have the power to move people...
Now in its eighth year, this open-air concert — presented by The
Royal Show in association with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra
and Music Revival — has become a firm favourite. This year is set
to please yet again.
The programme will be conducted by South Africa’s Kutlwano
Masote and will be introduced by Andy Capostagno.
Masote, the son of the late Michael Masote, a respected music
teacher and founder of the Soweto Symphony Orchestra, is well
known to Classic FM and SAfm listeners, where he has been an
on-air classical music broadcaster for twenty years.
He studied cello and chamber music at the International
Menuhin Music Academy in Switzerland on a scholarship
awarded by Yehudi Menuhin, but has an affinity for cross-cultural
music projects and performances that has set him apart as a
versatile music director and conductor. He is an orchestrator and
arranger of music not usually performed by orchestras, and has
orchestrated music by such unlikely musicians as hip-hop artists
Khuli Chana and Kwesta, soul singers Kabomo and Maleh, as well
THEY’VE been training all year.
While other birds have already left
for winter, they’ve stayed. For these
web-footed friends of CHOC, there’s
something more important than
warmer climes. Frigid water does not
deter these dapper ducklings.
For the fifth year in a row, a select
group of rubber ducks will face the
rapids of the Royal Show stream.
They will set off, beaks held high, a
steely look in their unblinking eye,
and they will race to raise funds for
children with cancer.
Support these heroic little guys by
backing one of them for R10 and you
could stand a chance to win R1 000,
all while helping children with
cancer.
Three Royal Duck Dashes will be
held at the Show this year, on the
afternoons of Saturday 25 May,
Sunday 26 May, and Saturday 1 June.
Artisanal fare
FOR 111 years, the Royal Show’s beautiful Craft Hall has been an annual showcase for the
skills and talents of people of all ages in the Pietermaritzburg and Midlands community.
Talented young children have delighted in their first taste of public recognition, seeing
their school artworks on display for the whole community to see, and this early affirmation
has often inspired them to develop and hone their creative talents as adults.
The Crafts and Home Industries Section of the Royal Agricultural Society stands as a
proud testament to the many domestic and hands-on arts that are in danger of being lost or
forgotten in today’s world.
This year, daily demonstrations by highly skilled members of the Midlands Woodworkers
Guild will also be on show in the Craft Hall. See how to carve, turn a wooden bowl on a
lathe, make a Tulbach chair, and more.
RICUS Nel, the headline act at the RSG Concert on the first Sunday of the Show,
is popular with young and old alike. His talent on an astounding 13 musical
instruments, and an ability to combine genres from country, to rock and rock ‘n roll,
boeremusiek, sokkie and laid-back easy listening tunes, has seen this 37-year-old
singer make his way into the hearts and music collections of many South Africans.
His music, and his raspy, country-rock voice are synonymous with a good kuier,
but also speak to your heart in all the right ways — as his string of gold-status
albums attests.
His first solo album, ‘Sak en pak’, in 2011 achieved gold status, and was followed
by ‘Sout van die Aarde’ (2013), ‘Ricus Nel sing Don Williams an ander country
legendes’ (2014), and ‘Ouskool Boerseun’ (2016) — with both the last albums also
achieving gold status.
Nel’s advice to young up-and-coming artists: “Make music that is genuine and
sincere, music that is your own! That is the most important thing. Don’t try to imitate
other people. Success lies in the raw honesty of your music.”
The RSG Concert at Royal Show 2019 starts at 2.15pm on Sunday, 26 May in the
Main Arena with Tussen Sterre, Sonja Herholdt and Snotkop taking to the stage
before Ricus.
FRANCOIS Henning, aka Snotkop, is a multi-platinum-selling
Afrikaans pop-rock and punk rapper who has stormed into the
hearts of South Africans with his irreverent musical passion,
unstoppable energy, sharp-edged lyrics, and sex appeal.
He is known as a guy who likes to have a jol and only sleeps
when he has to, and he has energetically pulled his fans into
the wilder, more controversial area of the Afrikaans music spectrum.
After starting his music career at age 15, Snotkop made a
name for himself as a kwaito singer in the late 1990s under the
name Lekgoa (“white guy” in Sotho). In 2005 he started performing
as Snotkop and quickly became known for his tonguein-cheek
take on pop music.
Snotkop has been nominated for multiple SAMA, MK, Tempo
and Vonk awards, and in 2012 he won the SAMA for Best Sokkie
Dans Album for “Ek Laaik Van Jol”. His latest cheeky offering,
“Sous” (2018), has been nominated for a 2019 SAMA award in
the Afrikaans category Beste Pop Album.
Don’t miss Snotkop at this year’s RSG Concert on the afternoon
It’s on!
DOGS from all over KwaZulu-Natal compete in
the Main Arena on the second weekend of the
Show to claim the title of top dog.
Only the fastest competitor with the least
number of faults can win.
Chinese Crested dogs, Miniature American
Shepherds, German Shepherds, Australian
Shepherds, Jack Russells, Schnauzers,
Shetland Sheepdogs, Havanese, Bearded
Collies, white Shepherds, and Border Collies
will all face off in the 2019 KwaZulu-Natal Dog
Agility Championships at this year’s Royal
Show, before going on to the South African
Championships in Gauteng on the next
weekend. All are hoping to finally make it to
the World Championships in September.
The Border Collie is the usual crowd favourite,
but the rest of the pack is not going to be
intimidated by that. Agility is the name of the
game, and the ability to quickly negotiate a
course containing obstacles like seesaws,
A-frames and tunnels means that even the
smallest competitor has a shot at greatness.
Carnage
THE rules of the Royal Demolition
Derby are simple: be as fast and as
ruthless as possible, and disable
or write off your opposition. On the
second weekend of the Show,10
drivers will enter the main arena
with this single thought in mind.
The result? Bent chassis, wobbling
wheels and engines spewing steam
and smoke. And maybe even fire.
It’s CARnage.
“Spectators can expect an intense,
action-packed hour of pure demolition
and destruction, with outrageous
stunts destroying cars,” says
Banger Boys manager Ruaan Du
Plessis.
The last stuttering car to stagger
from the arena will be declared the
winner.
attached to a two-inch-diameter axle!
Hosted by three times World Strongest Man finalist
Rory Scheepers (who has held the title of SA Strongest
Young
auctioneers
competition
THE KwaZulu-Natal leg of the Toyota SA National Young
Auctioneer Competition will again be hosted at the Royal
Show this year.
An event initiated by Veeplaas and Stockfarm magazines
in 2013, the competition gives young, budding
auctioneers an opportunity to display their ability to
drive and mediate livestock bidding from the auctioneer’s
rostrum. The aim is to promote the livestock auctioneering
profession, and compeititors are judged according to
rostrum performance and livestock knowledge.
Although the auction is fictional in nature, cattle on display
in the ring stand in as subject matter.
Entries are open to young people up to the age of 30,
and are divided into juniors 19 and younger, and seniors
30 and younger.
The winner of the junior category will receive prize
money of R2 000, and the winner of the senior category
will receive R1 000.
The competition will again be judged by Angus Williamson,
assisted by Gavin Matthews, a previous KZN winner
who progressed to win the Nationals in 2017. Matthews
represented South Africa abroad last year.
Five regional competitions are to be held across the
country, with the KZN leg taking place on Monday, 27 May
at the Royal Show.
The finals are scheduled to take place at the Alfa Show
in Parys in September.
Last year’s winner in the senior category was Matthew
Fyfie, and Fiso Hadebe (pictured) from Weston Agricultural
College won the junior category for the second year
in a row. This qualified Hadebe for the junior category of
the national finals, which he went on to win at the final
Hardy and adaptable: Made for Africa
The second annual indigenous veld goat
and sheep auction on Saturday 1 June
aims to build on last year’s success
THE KZN Indigenous
Veld Goat and Sheep
Club (IVG&S) will once
again represent the
Indigenous Veld Goat
Breeders Society of South Africa
at this year’s Royal Show, and has
partnered with Vleissentraal and
the Royal Show to host a commercial
all-breeds auction of fertile
goat and sheep breeding stock.
The auction will be held on
Saturday 1 June at 10.00am in the
Sheep & Goat Arena at the Royal
Showgrounds, and is sponsored
by Epol and AfriVet.
Various Indigenous Veld Goat
(IVG) ecotypes will be on offer,
amongst them Xhosa Lob Ears,
Mbuzi/Nguni, and Northern Cape
Speckled/Skilders. Approximately
155 quality breeding ewes will be
on auction, and 30 quality rams. In
addition there will be in the region
of 210 slaughter/trade stock IVGs
(rams, Kapaters, and ewes), and
roughly 50 indigenous sheep
(Meatmaster, Dorper, and Nguni).
This will be the IVG&S’s second
commercial breeding auction at
the Royal Show. The inaugural
event last year saw a total of 154
animals sold under the hammer,
realising a turnover of R278 350.
For a first-time venture the auction
was deemed a success, and the
Royal Agricultural Society and the
IVG&S agreed to make this an annual
event.
The IVG Breeders Society and
clubs are custodians of the pure
indigenous goat breeds of South
Africa. As such, they not only
preserve the integrity of the IVG
but have a responsibility to aid the
goat farming industry as a whole.
The various breeds and eco
types of IVG are hardy, adaptable
and disease resistant, making
them an integral part of uplifting
South African agriculture.
The IVG Breeders Society aims
to promote the smaller-framed,
hardy ewes as the mother line in
the meat and ceremonial slaughter
goat industry in South Africa.
The intention is to breed robust
goats that can withstand the harsh
African climate in this time of everincreasing
input costs.
VISIT US AT OUR STAND
You will be able to visit the IVG&S stand in the
Sheep & Wool Expo (in the area between the
Sheep & Wool Expo and the Sheep & Goat Arena).
Come and see examples of these hardy, adaptable
and beautifully coloured indigenous goats
and sheep.
The stand will be manned by friendly knowledgeable
club members who will only be too
glad to share their passion and knowledge with
you and answer any questions you may have.
