EDITOR’S NOTE
Ever since Tiger Woods made
a comeback and won his fifth
Masters tournament and his
first major since 2008, golf has
never been this exciting. Woods, who had
four back surgeries, claimed his 15th major
win which placed him just three behind
legendary Jack Nicklaus. Now, what is all
the excitement about?
Apart from the unbelievable precisions of
putts and swings, one of the most exciting
aspects of the game is the purse prize. The
Players Championship has the biggest purse
in golf, with the PGA Tour announcing
an increase to USD12.5 million, with the
winner getting a record of USD2.25 million.
Before then, the US Open had the biggest
purse in golf, when in 2017 the United
States Golf Association increased the purse
to USD12 million, with the winner getting a
record of USD2.16 million.
The PGA Championship purse is now
USD11 million, as well. However, the PGA
of America and the PGA Tour have tied the
purses of the PGA Championship and The
Players together in recent years.
The British Open purse was USD10.5
million in 2018. Following the golf live
telecast in Asia means getting up in the
middle of the morning before sunrise due to
time difference. An occasional night without
sleep may make you feel tired and irritable
the next day but continuous lack of sleep can
affect your overall health.
Sleep deprivation prevents your immune
system from building up its defences. If
you continue to lack sleep, your body may
feel weak, lethargic and increase your risk
of chronic illnesses like diabetes and heart
disease. It is reported that a good night’s
rest should take about a minimum of 8 hours
for adults (by Sleep Health journal). That’s
the same reason why Slumberland is so
committed to making beds that can give you
a restful and comfortable sleep that corrects
your posture, improve health and breathing
and can hold the weight of a heavier person.
Mr. Marco Righi, President of the
Slumberland division of Hilding Anders
Group shares with us some vital tips in
the “Science of Sleep” that Slumberland
is serious about caring for the welfare of
consumers. Founded in England in 1919
by Mr John Seccombe, Slumberland
has achieved its position as a premier
international bed manufacturer in more
than 20 countries worldwide. Slumberland
truly deserves to be in the “Celebration of
Success” this issue as they celebrate their
100th year Anniversary.
“The Celebration of Success” issue also
honours a renowned interior designer who
had authored nine design books to date,
designed the homes of David and Victoria
Beckham and Martin Shaw, presented her
own show on Channel 5, UK, referred to as
the ‘Queen of Taupe’, due to her signature
neutral palette and a guest judge on the final
episode of BBC Two’s The Great Interior
Design Challenge.
She is none other than Kelly Hoppen, whose
pristine credentials includes designing for
homes, yachts and private jets, as well as
hotels, restaurants, offices and aircraft.
Some of her most recent projects include
a collaboration with Disney to celebrate
Mickey Mouse’s 90th Anniversary, the
Celebrity Edge cruise ship, an ultraresidential
tower block One Park Taipei in
Taiwan and LUX Grand Gaube Hotel in
Mauritius.
In 2012, Vogue listed her in the 100
Inspirational Women, in 2014 Daily
Telegraph ranked her as the most influential
female interior designer in Britain, in 2017,
Evening Standard listed her as London’s
most influential people and in 2018, she was
named the Asia Most Influential Designer
Award by Designer Concept magazine.
In March 2009, Hoppen was appointed a
Member of the Order of the British Empire
(MBE) for her outstanding contributions to
interior design, a title which she still uses
today. What a lot of people doesn’t know is
that she is the stepmother to actress Sienna
Miller and fashion designer Savannah Miller,
the designer for Alexander McQueen. Please
read more on page 113.
The Celebration of Success would not be
complete without the grand entrance of the
Rolls Royce – Cullinan, the most luxurious
SUV in the world. Apart from all its posh
offerings and state-of-the-art drive tech,
some of the cool gadgets that the Cullinan’s
offers are its safety feature – Night Vision
and Vision Assist, daytime and night-time
Wildlife & Pedestrian warning, collision
warning, cross-traffic alert, lane departure
and lane change warning. See to believe, on
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of its Galaxy series,
CULTURE | MUSIC
Rising Stars
Climbing the stairway to stardom with the music they have created.
Are you Tired 你 累 不 累 - Chloe Shee
Chloe Shee has loved to sing since she was a child and has
been making her musical journey as she performed at countless
events. In 2018, she launched her first solo single ‘Are You
Tired.’ Composed and written by her, the poignancy of ‘Are You
Tired’ starts off with the arrangements of piano and harmonic
instrumentation followed by levels of emotion with her simple
vocals. The song conveys the pressure and blindness in life
that makes one forget oneself and it is to encourage the tired
person to find joy in life again. In the current Mandopop scene,
Chloe Shee’s song ‘Are You Tired’ could make listeners sing
their hearts out to this sad ballad.
"Ur cute but boring" - Lunadira
Lunadira performed alongside Lorde and The Neighbourhood
last year at Good Vibes. The Malaysian based singersongwriter
describes her music as a blend of 2000s R&B with
lyrical influences from English indie folk bands and American
alternative R&B artists. She began building her career in
music by covering pop songs and releasing them to a modest
community of listeners. ‘Ur cute but boring’, her latest single
surprised her fans as she made a solid case on why physical
beauty is pointless without the personality to match it. The song
is delivered in her signature low, sultry voice and accompanied
by groovy beats and memorable basslines.
OUR PICK
Free Spirit - Khalid
His single ‘Location’ reached the Top 10 on the Billboard
Hot R&B charts in 2016 when he was just 19 years old and
also earned 5 Grammy nominations in 2017. Khalid’s music
is primarily influenced by the R&B and pop genres. This
time around, this 21-year-old singer is taking some risks
in his music by incorporating electronic sound. He has just
released his latest single ‘Talk’ from his album Free Spirit in
collaboration with British electronic duo, Disclosure. The song
pushes a bouncy beat of crisp drums that work together with
Khalid’s deep voice. The album is the culmination of all the
growth and experiences he has gathered over the past years and
it will debut on 5th April 2019.
Girl - Maren Morris
The Nashville country music singer-songwriter and record
producer just released her first new solo music ‘Girl’
since her major label debut ‘Hero’ and its four singles
in 2016. Morris was also nominated for five Grammys
for her crossover hit ‘The Middle’ with Zedd and a pair
for her poignant country song ‘Dear Hate.’ ‘Girl’ is an
empowering and optimistic song as it serves as Morris’s
personal reminder to not succumb to self-criticism. In the
music video, Maren Morris highlights women in various
situations as it seeks to illustrate the struggles they face in
everyday life. The tone of ‘Girl’ is upbeat with a strutting,
indie-rock guitar sound.
COVER STORY
The Science of
Sleep
Previously working within the construction
industry, the science of sleep was a whole new
ball game for Mr Marco Righi; yet his visions are
bringing Slumberland into the future
Words by Karsha Green
Images by Brian & M8 Studio
Joining Hilding Anders in
March 2018 as the Asia
Pacific Regional President
of the global company’s
Slumberland Division, Mr Marco
Righi understood that he was
diving into a new world, one
far from his previous work with
building materials. What Marco
quickly realised however, was the
goal was still the same – providing
the end customer with a better
‘way of life’.
Originally founded in England in
1919, Slumberland has grown its
worldwide reputation, introducing
itself to Malaysia in 1981. Since
its establishment in the Asia
Pacific region, Slumberland has four manufacturing
plants and supplies its products to Malaysia,
Singapore, China, Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong,
Macau, Brunei, Taiwan, Japan, Bangladesh, India,
Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and beyond. Right after
joining Slumberland, Marco’s first task was to learn
the position that the company held
both internally and externally.
The results from his focus groups
revealed that Slumberland was a
well-respected brand both with
its employees and its customers.
However, Marco still had big plans
for the mattress manufacturer with
intentions to grow its digital space,
expand in the areas of technology
and innovation, and invest in its
people and their knowledge of sleep;
with the goal of becoming a global
sleep educator.
“After air and water, sleep is most
important to human survival.”
Says Marco Righi. While man can
survive three days without water
and three weeks without food, in merely 24 hours of
sleep deprivation, one will experience headaches.
And in just 72 hours, memory is impaired and reality
is distorted. Aware of this human need for good
quality sleep, Slumberland has developed its signature
innerspring mattress, as a special blend of horse hair
SleepLab in Switzerland also runs a state-ofthe-art
Research and Development division that
test for new ways to achieve a better, healthier
sleep. And on top of all this, one of Marco’s
main focuses is on sleep education, where he is
setting out to introduce ‘Sleep Experts’ in each
Slumberland store and franchise.
“Sleep deprivation is a growing problem
worldwide, and we want to educate our sales
staff so that they are not only experts on our
beds – but also know how our products help you
get a good night’s sleep from a physiological
stand point,” says Marco Righi.
Being a brand that has been established for
a hundred years and also the first to invent
the revolutionary posture springing system in
the 1960s and later on the pocketed posture
springing system in the 1990s, Slumberland
has never stopped pioneering innovations. As
Slumberland celebrates its centennial this year,
the brand moves into offering high technology
mattress customization with the recent launch
of MyZmartBed, a smart mattress that adapts
it firmness and relieves pressure points as you
sleep. The development of this product is one of
the key initiatives that Marco has been actively
involved in since joining the group.
“No two people who share the same bed will
need the same kind of mattress,” says Marco.
Strategically placed, sensing technology monitors
your body’s movements in real time throughout
the night and automatically adapts the mattress
accordingly. Controlled through an app, you can
“After air and
water, sleep is
Decadence
Clever space planning and
thoughtful design details
are the perfect ingredients
in creating a stylish
Russian apartment with a
contemporary touch.
Words by Reichen
In major cities across the world, younger
homeowners are swarming back into the
urban jungle. After spending years living
in the suburbs, the new generation is
finding cities a more appealing place to live in
due to their close proximity to the workplace,
educational institutions, retail outlets and other
points of interest. As a result, many have made
apartments or multi-storey residential buildings
their home.
This has presented a new challenge to interior
designers. On one hand, most apartment units
were constructed with limited space due to
population density in urban settings. On the other
hand, younger homeowners have developed a
taste for finer things in life; hence there is a need
to create living spaces that also appeal to a more
sophisticated crowd. Such is the challenge faced
by Ekaterina Lashmanova, whom was tasked to
design a residential apartment for a young family
situated in the imposing city of Moscow, Russia.
Having graduated as an architect, Ekaterina’s
creation emphasised on its space planning
features in order to ensure that the apartment
fulfills the practical needs of the young family. In
essence, the apartment houses a living room, two
bedrooms, two bathrooms, two dressing rooms, a
dining room, a kitchen and a small study – all the
space that a small family requires to go about its
daily life comfortably.
In addition to its space planning features,
Ekaterina has also diverted her attention to
producing a trendy yet iconic interior through
the use of bold statement pieces custom-made
by leading Portuguese furniture designer, Boca
do Lobo. The combination of chic, striking
furniture pieces and attentive details has resulted
in a balanced design, which enhances the relaxed
vibe of its living space.
The living room features grand ceilings and large
windows that are paired with classical accents
with fresh colour palette highlighted by the goldhammered
finish and contemporary lines of Boca
do Lobo’s sophisticated Wave Center table. Blue
hues and sensuous creams pair harmoniously
with its graphic flooring while the subtle gold
accents in its lighting fixtures add to the elegance
of its interior.
Apart from its living room, Ekaterina has put
a lot of effort into designing the bedrooms and
bathrooms of this apartment, which is seen
through the amount of details used to highlight
the architectural beauty of the respective spaces.
In the bedroom, its pale touches and rich finishes
evokes comfort instinctively. Meanwhile, the
glamorous bathroom reflects the fun perspective
of the design with its bold pink panels and Art
Nouveau inspired gold mirror.
Black accents such as its big indoor frames offer
the interior a posh undertone while keeping to
its rich, modern aesthetics. Overall, this Russian
apartment could be aptly described in three
words: posh, sharp and glamorous! TM
Draped and drenched in every possible shade of
nothing else but his love for the sea.
After designing for a good handful of clients,
most professional architects would eventually
get the hang of it. But it’s not the same when
architect Luca Andrisani’s client was himself.
“It was simply very strange,” he described his experience.
On the upside, he was able to express himself freely hence he
went crazy with the concept (in a good way) for his loft-like
North Miami Beach residence.
First, Luca turned his two-bedroom apartment into a
beachside getaway cum studio residence. The renovation
took place in a building called Oceanside Plaza, built in 1967
within the neighbourhood of Millionaire’s Row. Despite its
amazing location, the interior was rigid where the bedrooms
were placed on each side of the small central living room. The
solution was to open up the 1040-square-foot space using two
twelve-inch wide pocket doors instead of walls.
37 MAY/JUNE 2019 | TM

THE HOME
Then comes the fun part. The craziness begins
with the ocean blue 60s Italian Vietri tile designed
by Giò Ponti. In an effort to reconnect with his
Italian roots, Luca decked the entire apartment
with the bold blue tiles. They were literally
everywhere – the indoors and terrace included.
Living in a mostly cream and brown hued Hell’s
Kitchen apartment, it was really gutsy of Luca
to go forth with such radical approach. While
some might think that it’s a little overwhelming,
Luca till today, still thinks of it as a minimalist
approach as he used only one material. While
this leaves room for debate, the rooms were fast
to pick up the blues of Ponti’s design, from the
window treatments to the kitchen cabinetry and
the upholstery.
The new way the interior flows is pleasing as each
room now has its own oceanfront view. Luca who
is also a fan of everything timeless, purchased the
50’s Murano chandelier in the bedroom and the bathroom’s
Italian mirrors in an auction. The furnishings date from
the 60’s such as the Osvaldo Borsani sideboard, lamps
by Barovier & Toso and Moretti glassware in the dining
room. Same goes for the sofas and armchairs in the living
room paired with the coffee table made by Archimede
Seguso.
The terrace by far is his favourite. It was definitely love at
first sight when he saw the stunning seascapes. Making it
more worthwhile, he even paired it with table and chairs
by Maurizio Tempestini, which were also bought from an
auction. Nothing but blue all around, the idea was to create
a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors.
So wherever Luca is, he can see the water; either the ocean
in the distance or the blue of the ocean on the tiles. TM
Accentuating Art
Art is often overlooked as a finishing touch to a
completed concept or even as an additional feature
to a living space. Nonetheless, the usage of art in a
home can be more than just a complementary detail.
The art piece one chooses for their
home can be the beginning of a
colour palette for that space and even
the centrepiece that becomes the
focal point of that room. The idea that art pieces
can be more than just a detail in the background
is the driving force behind the Johannesburg Art
House. The house was a collaboration designed
by architecture firm Cimato Moroldo Architects,
interior designed by ARRCC and objets d’art by
design studio, OKHA.
The house welcomes guests with a glorious
double-volume entrance that is reached by a
concrete bridge over a small water feature. The
walls surrounding this opening are painted dark
grey that acts as an enclosure towards the glassfronted
doorway. Despite the heavier exterior
colours, the interior walls are white-coloured to
create a stark contrast. The white walls give an
open space perception that enhances the owner’s
art collection without seeming too busy or
untidy. The owner wanted a space where he could
not only showcase his curated African art pieces
but also have a home that would be a space to
entertain guests and be multi-functional.
The ground floor holds the dining room, bar,
cinema, formal lounge, family room and kitchen.
43 MAY/JUNE 2019 | TM

THE HOME
The entrance hall is decorated with a compelling
wooden screen that gives a peek into the rest
of the house. Also from the entrance, snippets
of the scenic garden and patio can be viewed
through this open-plan home. One of the art
pieces featured in this section of the house is the
brass-clad Solar Mirror designed by Adam Court
of OKHA. This particular piece adds on to the
visual language of the house.
The dining room is impeccably styled with the
copper PH Artichoke lamps that complement
the mahogany Mojo candlesticks placed on the
dining table. To add a little more personality into
the room, carved tribal-figures from the owner’s
African art collection, are carefully arranged
in front of the faceted mirror. The bar is more
understated with a simple David Weeks hanging
mobile chandelier from the high ceilings.
The focal point of the bar is the textured grey
crystallite wall which adds a touch of masculinity
into the home.
THE HOME
The formal lounge is held with more order. The
use of clean-line furniture pieces creates an
elegance that conceptualises charm. The simple
furniture is the perfect balance to the two large
canvas artworks that essentially ties the room
together. The triptych by South African Penny
Siopis brings in some movement to the generally
formal area whilst the stronger lines in the
artwork by Burundi-born Serge Alain Nitegeka
depict a sense of boldness.
For a more casual scene, the family room was
designed with usability in mind. The coffee table
was customised by OKHA, especially for this
room. As a way to entertain cohesiveness in the
overall design of the house, the muted colour
palette was upheld with the furniture used. The
kitchen which is adjacent to the family room
is decked out in monochromatic colours. The
function of the kitchen was very important to the
designers in the sense that only the necessary
equipment is kept in sight whilst other elements
are kept smartly hidden as a part of the design.
Furthermore, the second floor of the Art House
is an extension of the artistic details prominently
featured on the ground floor. A ‘Big Shadow’
standing lamp by Marcel Wanders and a collage
artwork by Asha Zero occupy the walls that leads
into to the bedrooms. Each en-suite bedroom
is styled with different accent colours. For the
master suite, a painting by Conrad Botes adds
brightness to the grey room. Another component
of this space is added texture through the wood,
marble and ceramic elements.
The exterior parts of the Art House are
completely different in objective. The patio area
was designed to serve as a space for hosting
parties, fun and antics. The garden, deck and
splash pool alongside the carefully arranged
tables and sofas, create an outdoor entertainment
hub perfect for dinners and barbeque parties. The
Art House is essentially gallery-like whilst still
maintaining the casual comfort of a home. TM
ADVERTORIAL
While exercise is generally recommended as a way to stay
fit, there is no denying that it tends to involve high-intensity
workouts which have long recovery times. As a result, many
people get discouraged and give up entirely after just a few
tries. A good alternative that comes to mind in such cases is
using an aqua gym which has numerous advantages over its
traditional counterpart.
Twice as Efficient
Because water resistance is 12 times higher compared to air
resistance, exercising in the water allows people to shape their
bodies and tone their muscles twice as fast compared to landbased
fitness routines.
Feel the Burn
Weight loss can be achieved faster and easier as using an aqua
gym which involves dealing with water resistance can burn up
to 700 calories per hour which is twice the rate of a classic
fitness session.
Good for the Heart
A person’s heart rate is 10% lower when they are in the water
so they will be able to engage in high-intensity workouts while
submerged without worrying too much about their heart.
Additionally, the hydrostatic pressure will work wonders on
their cardiovascular and lymphatic systems.
Watery
Workouts
More than just a passing fad, aqua
gyms are a highly appealing and
effective way to exercise with
multiple benefits.
Fight the Fat
Aqua gym usage has proven effective in helping deal with the
body’s cellulite and water retention issues as the hydrostatic
pressure creates a drainage effect which mobilises the fat and
eliminates it as part of the cycle.
Low Impact, High Intensity
As a person weighs about one-fifth of their true weight when
submerged, exercising in the water will help them avoid
injuries, tension in their joints and muscle soreness.
Established in 2011, De POOLman SHOP is the only
retailer and wholesaler carrying CE-certified aqua gym
equipment in Malaysia. It is the importer and sole distributor
of HydroRider, Aqquatix from Italy and Pool Biking from
Spain. TM
Girard-Perregaux Quasar
Watch
The Girard-Perregaux Quasar is a masterpiece
of fine watchmaking and takes its name from
an astronomical object of very high luminosity
found in the middle of certain galaxies. The
and the hands are skeletonised, white
gold, ‘Dauphine’ type with luminescent material.
The bridges made of titanium, sandblasted and
then blackened by a PVD treatment visually
contribute to Quasar’s overall transparency
effect. This watch is also water resistant to 30m.
Empowering WinteRace 2019
unites watchmaking with the world of motor
sports, both dedicated to the constant search for
Some of the world’s finest international watch brands debuts
their revolutionary timepieces to mark special occasions.
Classico Jade
I Love You |
Ulysse Nardin
One of the timeless models of the
Ulysse Nardin collection, the Classico
Jade, returns to the scene with a smaller
diameter of 34mm and an exclusive
collection that emphasizes love. With its
new limited edition of 99 pieces, the 8,
7, and 6 hour-markers have been replaced
by the numerals 5, 2, and 0. In Chinese
numerical tradition, “520” means “I love
you”. The embodiment of femininity, the
Classico Jade is a love letter to be worn
on the wrist.
DEVEL 16 |
Moritz Grossmann
A bold fashion statement for men, Moritz Grossmann DEVEL
16 is inspired by Devel Sixteen - built for speed with 5000
horsepower. Designed in polished stainless steel, a yellow Devel
Motors logo graces the seconds on a black background with a fine
yellow border. The yellow stitching of the black leather wristband
matches the colour in perfect harmony. There is a limited edition
Super Bowl Watch |
Moritz Grossmann
Moritz Grossmann dedicates the unique Super
BowlWatch presented in a sporty steel casing to watch
connoisseurs and fans of the New England Patriots. The
Super Bowl dial has an elaborate insert in the shape of a
football that allows a view of the 201.1 calibre in places.
The match results “13:3” together with the year 2019
embossed in the background are evidence of the team’s
triumph. The hands bear the team colours of nautical
blue and red. The New England Patriots team continues
its era of victories with a sixth Super Bowl. Since 2001,
superstar Tom Brady has directed the New England
Patriots together with Patriots coach Bill Belichick. The
dominance of the Brady era is unparalleled in football
history. At the Super Bowl, the “Pats” prevailed against
the Los Angeles Rams, who have won the Super Bowl
once before.
Meet In February |
Moritz Grossmann
Moritz Grossmann documents the second meeting between President
of the United States of America, Donald Trump and North Korea’s
ruler Kim Jong-un with a special edition. The new MEET IN
FEBRUARY timepiece’s handcrafted, lance-shaped hands are lined
with red and blue HyCeram, the national colours of both countries,
and are flat polished. The special model comes with a stainless steel
case and a dial whose middle, with its discreet contours, suggests
the silhouette of both heads of state in the longitudinal view. The
fine cut-outs of the contours allow a glimpse of the 201.1 calibre. In
the lower third of the dial in the space from four to seven o’clock is
engraved the date of the summit - 27/28.02.2019 where the meeting
took place in Hanoi, Vietnam. TM
THE ART
Art In the
Wilds
Miaja Art Collections - Contemporary Art Gallery
presents a Solo Exhibition by David Yarrow in Singapore.
“A
good picture has to transcend at many
different levels. Emotionally, it has
to be something that grabs people’s
attention and hold it; whether in its
content or in terms of how evocative it is,” says David Yarrow,
world-renowned fine art photographer.
‘It’s Five O’clock Somewhere’ is an exclusive feature of limited
edition prints from Yarrow’s recently completed project in
Montana with iconic supermodel Cindy Crawford. The worldrenowned
London-based fine art photographer came to Lion
City to showcase his evocative, pin-sharp black and white
signature prints. The exhibition also showcased photos that
capture the beauty and unique characters of endangered wild
animals in Borneo, Kenya, South Africa, Namibia, Iceland and
other remote places as well as his iconic image ‘Cara Cigar’ with
Cara Delevingne.
Yarrow’s large-format monochrome images have been displayed
in many leading galleries and museums across Europe, USA
and Canada. He made his name with his evocative style and by
getting close to wildlife using wide-angled lenses. In 2017, he
was one of the bestselling fine art photographers in the world
with the limited-edition prints regularly selling for high prices
at auctions.
At the Sotheby’s photography auction in London in May 2017,
Yarrow’s iconic image from South Sudan, Mankind, was sold for
$75,000, the highest of the 100 lots at the show. In April of 2018,
his image ‘The Wolf of Main Street’ sold for $100,000 and was
the highest bid piece by a living photographer.
Giving back is also integral to this Glasgow-born photographer’s
work ethic as he has reaffirmed his goal of raising significant
funds for Wildlife Conservation and other charitable projects
such as Education and Children’s Cancer. In 2016, Rizzoli New
York published Yarrow’s latest book, Wild Encounters, which
had a foreword written by HRH The Duke of Cambridge, Prince
William, and was awarded the Art Book of 2017 by Amazon. All
of the royalties from his book are donated to Tusk, the leading
British NGO that focuses on animal conservation in Africa.
“Proximity is also an important feature of my work. I don’t take
loose pictures of landscapes; in my photography, the subject tends
to be very close to the camera. When the subject is far away, you
can lose a lot of emotion in the shot. I make pictures rather than
take pictures. I have a preconception of what I want to capture,”
Yarrow says about his work. Philanthropy and conservation are
central to his passion for documenting the animal and human
world in a fresh and creative way.
Yarrow’s position in the industry has been recognised with a wide
range of advisory and ambassadorial roles. He is an ambassador
for WildArk as well as the Kevin Richardson Foundation and on
the advisory board of Tusk. In 2017, Land Rover appointed him
as a global ambassador and creative partner. He is the European
ambassador for Nikon and has recently been integral to the
company’s most anticipated camera release of the last decade.
He shot LVMH’s recent ‘Don’t Crack Under Pressure’ campaign
with Cara Delevingne that can be seen in airports around the
world.
Miaja Art Collections is devoted to encouraging visual dialogues
to inspire and enrich our daily lives. Focused on promoting artists
through exhibitions and public programmes, it showcases crosscultural
art to the local art community and the general public.
“Embrace who you are and your divine purpose. Identify the
barriers in your life and develop the discipline, courage and
strength to permanently move beyond them and keep moving
forward,” says Isabelle Miaja, the gallery owner of Miaja Art
Collections - Contemporary Art Gallery. TM
THE VACATION
Electrifying
Escapes
Vivid Sydney
Transforming Sydney into a technological wonderland, light art
sculptures, innovative light installations and grand-scale projections
represent the point where art, technology and commerce intersect.
Nostalgia Above
Firefly Field
The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney is host to the Firefly Field
which consists of 500 flying light points that simulate an aerial
ballet of the tiny nocturnal winged creatures. Driven by their
fascination with the aesthetics and movement of these creatures,
Dutch artists Toer created a minimalist arrangement consisting
of LED light points housed in transparent capsules. These are
supported on superfine, barely visible steel rods that flex and
spring with the weight of the pod, giving each simulated firefly
its unpredictable and natural movement.
Tapping into fond childhood memories of daydreaming while
cloud-watching, Nostalgia Above connects the romance of nature
with data-driven climate technology using clouds as its medium.
A collaboration between Capto Collaborative, the youngest team
of artists in Vivid Light and Beyond Blue, it uses programmable
LED bulbs diffused through clusters of translucent polycarbonate
spheres and projections of environmental imagery to create the
illusion of rolling cloudscapes as someone walks beneath it.
Ballerina
An eternal dance solo titled Ballerina occupies the harbour’s
edge, every step of her graceful performance frozen in time as
she dances on and on. The work uses light as a compositional tool
played across 20 silhouettes. A figurative sequence of a cyclical
ballet repeats endlessly and is perfectly synchronized with its
soundtrack. Stroboscopic effects call to mind a succession of
shots from sort of photographic memory, made up of significant
but never completely perceptible visions.
Let It Snow
An immersive and responsive installation gives the impression
of giant snowflakes landing at Hickson Road Reserve, Sydney.
Comprised of thousands of LED bulbs, Let It Snow allows
visitors to walk in between the crystalline structures. It reacts to
weather patterns and pedestrian motion as the light plays across
the dendrites that give each snowflake its singular form. The
space feels more turbulent and tempestuous when the wind is
blowing and lots of people are playing, wandering and running
around the flake shapes.
Austral Flora Ballet
Every year, an artist of international renown is commissioned
Images by Apurva Kempinski
to create an original artwork to be projected onto the iconic
Sydney Opera House at Harbour City. This year, Andrew
Thomas Huang is the torchbearer entrusted with the Lighting
of the Sails. The Los Angeles-based Chinese American artist
and filmmaker created a hypnotic fusion of contemporary
dance and motion-capture technology that highlights the
beauty of local botanic wonders and incorporates a dancer’s
movements that reflect the sensuous arcs of the Sydney
Opera House’s silhouette.
Pixar Animation Studios
Illuminating Argyle Cut In The
Rocks
Transforming Sydney’s heritage-listed Argyle Cut in The Rocks
into a visual feast are projections of Academy Award-winning
Pixar Animation Studios’ behind-the-scenes artwork and the
evolution of their iconic animated films. It is a special project
designed for Vivid Sydney that takes audiences on a visual
journey through the studio’s creative process. The creative light
projection will feature favourite characters from Pixar films
including the beloved duo of Woody and Buzz Lightyear.
Food
These restaurants and cafes in
Maybe Sammy
Maybe Sammy is a classic cocktail bar with an interior
that screams 1950’s Hollywood and Vegas. It has an
extensive list of signature cocktails and a wide selection
of spirits, wines and beers. The kitchen whips up bar
food offerings that perfectly complement their drinks
such tacos with lavender-marinated salmon, avocados
and coriander as well as bagels with strips of Wagyu
pastrami.
Valet by V Lounge
This modern Pan-Asian café in Cabramatta earned its spot
on local foodies’ lists by serving up its show-stopping Beach
Balls. The embodiment of a summer beach on a plate, these
deep-fried sweet potato mochi balls come with a blue butterfly
pea flower custard dipping sauce. Adventurous souls will be
Sash
This North Bondi eatery has built up a reputation for serving
up some of the most beautiful and delicious food in the city
from stacked and drizzled pancakes to bright pink bowls and
slightly naughty rolls. Fan favourites include a stack of three
mouthwatering fluffy pancakes topped with poached berries,
figs, pistachio crumble and maple syrup. Another light but
equally tasty option is the raspberry, lime and ricotta hotcakes
that come with a combination of semolina, strawberry,
pistachio ice cream, rose and lime reduction.
Melbourne’s Sash is a restaurant that delivers a fun and
exciting take on ‘Japi-Mexi’ cuisine. It is widely known for
its eye-catching technicolour Japanese-style pizzas, tacos
and sliders although the term ‘pizza’ is used loosely here.
There are two ‘pizza’ bases with one made out of blackened
squid ink dough and the other out of crisp oven-baked rice.
The latter is used in the restaurant’s signature ‘sashizza’,
an award-winning sashimi pizza with playful toppings that
include sashimi-style yellowfin tuna, avocados, strawberries,
mangos and wasabi mayonnaise. Other quirky items on the
menu include the equally eccentric sticky pulled pork sweet
chilli and apple slaw salad.
Body Rituals
Losing centimeters is no longer the only focus, as individuals
are also aiming for a tone and clean body that looks young.
Just like the face, one’s body ages, hence it deserves cuttingedge
skincare as well as a good bathing ritual. The skin on
our bodies experiences a lot of friction from clothes that we
wear, weather changes and pollutions, hence a daily body care
routine is the only way to keep one’s body firmed and toned.
Pearl 95
Iconic Design
One of Kelly Hoppen’s most
recent projects include
collaboration with Bill Dixon
to design the ultra-luxury yacht
- The Pearl 95, where the exquisite interior
features luxurious materials such as marble,
teak, ceramic and linen.
The new Pearl 95 features the exclusive
Kelly Hoppen luxurious interior design, on
par with the impeccable standards expected
by superyacht owners. The owner’s cabin
is located on the main deck and features a
functional layout that maximises space and
creates a vibrant atmosphere.
The main deck saloon is largely spacious that
can fit a huge L-shaped sofa and a dining
for an unparalleled connection to the outdoors.
“All the joinery is hand designed and sketched
with the layering of different textures whether
wood, metals, suedes, leathers and fabrics. I also
layered the materials in a unique way to create
depth. A yacht’s beauty is all about its sleek lines,
open space and safety,” explained Kelly Hoppen.
On the lower deck, the Pearl 95 also features two
double cabins and two twin cabins, all en-suite
with owners given the option to specify a full beam
cabin with walk-in wardrobe and large bathroom
in place of the two double cabins.
We also increased the lighting details,” shared Kelly
Effortless Everywhere:
Rolls-Royce
Cullinan
The most luxurious SUV on the
market makes its Malaysia debut.
Words by Felicia Soon
Images by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars
An eye catching feature on the new
Cullinan is the high bodied, solid
appearance. The Cullinan, named
after the largest rough diamond ever
discovered, reaches 1,836mm, a height accentuated
by a large glass to metal ratio as viewed from the
side while 22-inch wheels give Cullinan a beautiful
visual balance.
Rolls-Royce traditionally places demand on its
unique all-aluminium architecture called the
‘Architecture of Luxury’, which delivers
extraordinary body stiffness for exceptional ‘bestin-class’
performance on rough terrain, whilst
maintaining the ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ for off-road
enjoyment, without sacrificing any Rolls-Royce
on-road behaviour.
Cullinan is powered by a 6.75-litre twin-turbo
V12 petrol engine. Output numbers for the unit
are 563hp at 5,000rpm and 850Nm at 1,600rpm.
Combined with an eight-speed auto transmission,
performance figures include a 0-100km/h time of 5.1
seconds and a 250km/h top speed, and reported fuel
consumption, is 15 litres per 100 km.
Off-road, the electronically-controlled air suspension
uses a powerful compression system to actively
push down any wheel when the system detects loss
of traction. This is to ensure that every wheel is
constantly in contact with the ground and maximum
torque is delivered to all wheels.
Upon opening the coach doors – the SUV lowers
itself by 40 mm to make entry effortless for occupants
(including the driver). Once inside, the apertures
can be closed through a touch sensor located on the
exterior door handles.
As the most anticipated Rolls-Royce of all time,
contemporary and functional design ensures Cullinan
gains iconic status in the face of increasingly bland
SUV designs. The debut vehicle has a black leather
interior with Scivaro Grey, Mandarin and Slate
contrast trim as well as open-pore blackwood and
chevron wood elements.
In addition, the upper fascia is clad in new, durable
and water-resistant boarded ‘Box Grain’ black leather
similar to that seen on high-end Italian luggage and
handbags.
The rear passenger compartment provides the best
seats in the house and customers can go for the fourseater
version, also known as Individual Seats or the
five-seater version, also known as Lounge Seats.
The Lounge Seat configuration is likely to be
more attractive to families. The rear seats fold
down electronically. Both seat backs can be folded
completely, creating a flat load area or in a 2/3 and
1/3 split, increasing practicality even further.
The Individual Seat configuration is for those who
value luxury over practicality. The two individual
rear seats are separated by a console which contains
a drinks cabinet with whisky glasses and decanter at
the front, and champagne flutes and refrigerator in the
rear. The seats also feature ventilation and massage
functions, and can be adjusted to offer ultimate
comfort for rear seat passengers over long journeys.
THE DRIVE
The rear compartment or boot area offers a standard
560 litres of spaces (and 600 litres with the parcel
shelf removed). Access to the cargo space is via an
opening two-section tailgate called ‘The Clasp’.
The opening and closing of the mechanism is done
automatically via a button on the key fob.
Cullinan is also the first “three-box” car in the SUVsector
where a glass partition isolates the passenger
cabin from the luggage compartment to decrease
noise levels and improve climate control operation.
Available kit includes a panoramic glass roof, an
18-speaker Bespoke audio system and individual
entertainment touchscreen displays. The Cullinan
also features items such as a WiFi hot spot, wireless
mobile charging at the front and five USB ports
around the cabin.
For the driver, Cullinan’s safety features include
Night Vision and Vision Assist, including daytime
and night-time Wildlife & Pedestrian warning, a four
camera system with panoramic all-round visibility
and a helicopter view, active cruise control, collision
ADVERTORIAL
St. Joseph’s Institution
International School Malaysia
A top international school infused with Lasallian values and tradition
St. Joesph’s Institution International
Malaysia (SJIIM) has been upholding
academic excellence since its
establishment in 2016 in partnership
with Tropicana Corporation Berhad.
This unique international school nurtures
learners to become well-rounded learners
with its value-centric education that
follows the globally recognised Lasallian
education ethos.
history of educational quality and initiates
future collaborative learning platforms
to encourage sharing of knowledge and
resources between the institutions.
At SJIIM, academic excellence is solidified
by the school’s curriculum. The school’s
early years’ foundation begins with the
Nursery and Reception programme. The
International Primary Curriculum and
Singapore Math is then taught in Years 1
to 6, followed by the International General
Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)
in Years 7 to 11 and the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)
in Years 12 and 13. These selected academic
programmes for SJIIM offer global
flexibility to its students, who will have
wider tertiary options when they graduate.
the Brothers. Besides providing pastoral
care to nurture the character development
of the students, the school also encourages
students to embrace learning through service
philosophy by supporting charities and
organisations through community events.
SJIIM caters up to 1,500 plus students
on its 6-acre (2.43ha) campus in the
neighbourhood of Tropicana in Petaling
Jaya. Its comprehensive range of facilities
include state-of-the-art libraries and
laboratories, music, arts and sports spaces,
swimming and wading pools, a Lasallian
formation centre and ample parking spaces
complemented by a campus wide security
system. TM
The school goes by the tagline ‘Enter to
As the first SJII in Malaysia, St Joseph
is part of the Lasallian education circle
in Asia which includes the 160-yearold
St Joseph’s Institution (independent
all-boys secondary school) and St
Joseph’s Institution International School
(independent co-educational international
school) in Singapore. Over the years,
SJIIM builds on its predecessor’s extensive
Learn, Leave to Serve’ and strives to reach
out to ‘The Last, The Lost and The Least’
which is a unique school community feature
that is distinct to SJIIM. Bearing the mark
of St John Baptist De La Salle’s essence of
education, which is built on faith, service
and community building from within the
school, the school provides holistic learning
that is largely supported by the teachers and
