BEHIND THE SHIELD
The Salvation Army
2018 Annual Report
A legacy of hope
THE
ORIGIN
The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 in the east end
of London by William and Catherine Booth. They sought
to bring salvation to the poor, destitute and hungry by
meeting both their physical and spiritual needs.
THE
MISSION
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an
evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its
message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated
by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of
Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without
discrimination.
THE LOCAL
ORGANIZATION
Established as one of the oldest charities in San Jose in
1884, The Salvation Army Silicon Valley now comprises
five local service centers: two in downtown San Jose, Santa
Clara, Sunnyvale and Gilroy.
Our
Vision
A
s Salvation Army Officers, we are committed to
sharing the love of God by providing impactful
services for those in need with the help of our faithful
donors, dedicated staff and countless volunteers. Though
much has changed over the past decade in Silicon Valley,
some things have remained the same. Individuals and
families continue to struggle as the rising cost of housing
means less dollars available to spend on food and
necessities. The Salvation Army today remains as relevant
as it did in 1884 when we first opened our doors here in
Silicon Valley. It is our hope that, with your help, we can
continue to keep up with the ever- growing demand to help
those in need for many more years to come.
Thank you for helping us do the most good by caring for
those in our community.
Blessings,
“My wife and I are homeless and currently living in our
car. If it was not for The Salvation Army’s Senior Nutrition
Program, we would not have a safe place to eat a good
healthy meal on a daily basis. At the Senior Program we
have found a warm, welcoming place where we have
made good friends and have a place to go to keep us
off of the streets. I’m thankful that The Salvation Army of
Silicon Valley provides a place for seniors like us to come
for safety and a place of community.”
MARYELLEN AND JOE
“If it was not for The Salvation Army of Silicon Valley my
sister and I would not be able to provide the basic needs
for our children. It is so good to know that when things are
tough financially, we can go to The Salvation Army and
receive help. They always understand our situation, give
support and provide for our needs both physically and
emotionally.”
