A Note From the
Authors
The reason why we choose to do a
sports magazine is because we both love
to do sports and to be active.
Erin and I actually met through a
sport, soccer. We were on the same
soccer team in 3 rd grade through 6 th grade
which is how we became such good
friends.
We became even better friends when
we found out we were in some of the same
classes in middle school. It felt really good
to actually know that you have some
friends in your classes on the first day after
being at different schools.
To this day we are still best friends and
we are talking to each other everyday. We
chose this sports topic because that has to
do with how we met and because there
are many people like us that have a strong
passion for sports.
We tried to include as many sports in
this magazine as we could because there
are some sports that aren’t as well known
as others and we wanted to give an
opportunity for others to play all of these
different sports.

Sports

A-Z

A - Archery
Archery is a sport where you
take a bow and arrow and use the
bow to shoot the arrow at a target.
Historically archery was used
for hunting but in modern times it is
just a competitive or recreational
sport. A person who participates in
archery is typically called an archer
or bowman.
B - Badminton
Badminton is a racquet sport
played using racquets to hit a
shuttlecock over a net.
It’s most commonly played with
teams of one or two. Points are
scored by striking the shuttlecock
with the racquet and landing it within
the opposing side’s half of the court.
Each side can only hit the
shuttlecock over once before it goes
over the net. The play ends when
the shuttlecock hits the floor or if a
foul has been called.
C - Cheerleading
There is lots of hard work and
effort put into cheerleading, you have
to use your arms, legs, and brain.
Cheerleading can be both
competitive and noncompetitive.
Many people consider cheer to
not be a sport and others would
argue and say that it is a sport. Like
stated before, cheer can be both
competitive and noncompetitive. So
you could say that the competitive
cheerleaders are the ones playing a
sport but the ones that don’t compete
aren’t playing an actual sport.

D - Dance
Dance is a performing art form
consisting of specifically chosen
movements. This movement has
aesthetic and symbolic value, and is
acknowledged as dance by
performers in a certain culture.
Dance is described by its
choreography, by its movements, or
by its historical period or place of
origin. Other forms of physical art
are sometimes said to have a
dance-like quality, including martial
arts, gymnastics, cheerleading,
figure skating, and many other
forms of athletics.
There are many different types
of dance such as contemporary,
ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, ballroom,
and so many more.
E - Equipment
Equipment is not a sport but
it does play a key part in many
sports. Most sports require some
type of equipment, whether it is to
train or for protection when
playing.
There are so many different
types of equipment, some are for
protection like knee pads, others
are for playing a sport like a
baseball, some are for training like
weights, and others are for making
a sport easier like cleats.
If you want to know more
about different types of equipment,
and how to use it you can read
Sports Equipment (pg 30).

F - Football
Football is a sport, played with
two teams. One team starts as an
offending team, the other defending.
There are typically eleven player per
side. The teams race to get
possession of the ball from their end
of the field to the opposing end’s
end zone.
G - Golf
Golf is a sport in which players
use clubs to hit small balls into a few
holes on a course in as few hits as
possible.
A usual golf course has
eighteen holes, some recreational
courses have only nine holes. Each
hole on the course must contain a
tee box to start from, and a putting
green containing the actual hole, 4
1 ⁄ 4
inches in diameter.
Golf is played for the lowest
amount of hits or the lowest score
on the most individual holes in a
complete round by a person or
team.
H - Hockey
Hockey is a sports in which two
teams play against each other trying
to move a ball or puck into the
opponent’s goal using a hockey
stick. There are different types of
hockey such as bandy, field hockey,
and ice hockey.
Field hockey is one version of
hockey. The game can be played
on many different surfaces such as
grass, artificial turf, water turf as well
as an indoor board surface. Each
team plays with eleven players
including the goalie. The players
use sticks to hit a hard plastic ball
into the opposing team’s goal.

I - Ice Skating
Ice skating is where a person
skates across a sheet of thick ice,
using metal-bladed ice skates to
glide on the ice surface. Ice skating
can be carried out for various
reasons, including recreation, sport,
exercise, and travel.
Ice skating can be performed
on specially prepared ice surfaces
in arenas, tracks, parks, and rinks,
both indoors and outdoors, as well
as on natural bodies of frozen
water, such as ponds, lakes and
rivers.
J - Javelin
Someone that throws javelin is
called a javelineer. A javelin is a
light spear designed primarily to be
thrown for sport.
The javelin is almost always
thrown by hand, unlike the bow and
arrow and slingshot, which are shot
from bows and catapulted from
slings. However, devices do exist
to assist the javelin thrower in
achieving greater distance,
generally called spear-throwers.

L - Lacrosse
Lacrosse is a team sport
played with a lacrosse stick and a
lacrosse ball. Players use the head
of the lacrosse stick to carry, pass,
catch, and shoot the ball into the
goal.
K - Karate
Kickball is a game and league
game, similar to baseball. Like in
baseball, one team tries to score by
having its players kick a ball from
home base to the field and then run
the bases, while the other team
tries to stop them by tagging them
out with the ball before they can get
back to the home base.
Instead of hitting a small, hard
ball with a bat, players kick an
inflated rubber ball. Like in
baseball, teams alternate
half-innings. The team with the
most runs after however many
innings wins. Kickball is a popular
playground game and is typically
played among children.
The sport has a few versions
that have different sticks, fields,
rules and equipment: men’s
lacrosse, women's lacrosse,
intercrosse, and a few others.
Men’s lacrosse, which is
played outdoor is a contact sport
and all players wear protective
gear.
Women’s lacrosse is also
played outdoors and does not allow
body contact but does allow stick to
stick contact. The only protective
gear required for women players is
eyegear and a mouthguard, while
goalies wear helmets and
protective pads.
Intercrosse is a mixed-gender
non-contact sport played indoors
that uses an all-plastic stick and a
softer ball.

M - Marathon
The marathon is a
long-distance race, completed by
running, walking, or a run/walk
strategy. The marathon has an
official distance of 26.219 miles,
race was invented based off of the
fabled run of the Greek soldier
Pheidippides, a messenger from
the Battle of Marathon to Athens,
who reported the victory.
N - Netball
Netball is a sport played by
two teams of seven players.
end. The teams try to score goals
by passing a ball down the court
and shooting it through its goal ring.
During general play, a player
with the ball can hold on to it for
only three seconds before shooting
for a goal or passing to another
player. The winning team is the one
that scores the most goals. Netball
games are an hour long. Variations
have been developed to increase
the game's pace and appeal to a
wider audience.
as short as 2-3 days for a to as long
as 15 days with marathon rallies with
other cross-country rally events
lasting 4-5 days.
The total distance covered can
be anywhere between 372.8 miles to
second ball in the pocket.
Each specific pool game has
its own name; some of the
better-known include eight-ball,
straight pool, one-pocket, bank
pool, and plenty more games. The
generic term pocket billiards is
sometimes also used, and favored
by some pool-industry bodies, but
is technically a broader
classification.
The distances, time duration
and events depending on the
location of the event and the time
short jams in which both teams
designate a jammer who wears a
star on the helmet.
The jammer scores points by
lapping members of the opposing
team. The teams attempt to stop
the opposing jammer while
assisting their own jammer, playing
both offense and defense
simultaneously.

T GYMNASTICS
Schaefer

What would it be like if your
gymnastics competition was
tomorrow and you weren’t even
ready? Well, here is some ideas
to help you get ready before you
compete.
My favorite quotes for gymnastics
1. To get your body ready and
your confidence ready then
you might want to go to
your gymnastics gym that
you go to and get to work
practicing and practicing
over and over again so that
you can be better at the
moves and so that you
wouldn't freeze up on the
floor.
2. If you want to be more fit for
your gymnastics
competition then you could
go on a diet so that you
would feel more
comfortable
3. Strech strech strech every
day and even more before
you compete so that you
would be more flexible.
4. Practice balancing on one
leg so that you could get
use to it and so that on the
beam when you are doing
turns and jumps so that you
are most likely not to fall off.
5. Achieve all 3 of your splits
and some over splits so
that when you are doing
leaps your legs should look
like how your splits are.
6. Drinking 9-13 cups of water
a day so that your skin and
muscles are hydrated.

How much is it going to
cost to do gymnastics?
Competitively would cost
150-300 dollars or more per
class. For only the leotards
it would cost from 25-50
dollars. The shoes would
cost from 35-60 dollars.
Also, if you are traveling to
go to a competition then
you could use
transportation if needed.
During the days that you
don’t have gymnastic
practice then you could get
a mini beam to practice on,
a mat, a floor target so you
know how close you are to
the middle of the target, a
mini trampoline, inclined
mat, mini bar, ect.
8ft Mini gymnastics
beam-$84.90
A 4’x10’x2’’ mat- $129.99
A floor target- $
Mini trampoline- $80.99
Inclined mat-$179.99
Mini gymnastics bar + extra
mat- $413.00
