Dear Readers, 

Welcome aboard SpiceJet! 

At the outset, I would like to congratulate the 

Election Commission of India and the citizens of 

our country on the successful conclusion of the 

2019 general election — the largest democratic 

exercise the world has ever seen. I extend my 

heartiest congratulations to our Hon’ble Prime 

Minister Shri Narendra Modi on his stupendous 

victory. The election verdict is a big win for India 

and its 1.3 billion people. 

This is a mandate to build a strong, proud and 

prosperous India. India must grow at 10% for the 

next ten years and this government will ensure 

that we shed the tag of a ‘developing’ country 

and proudly take our place in the big league of 

economic superpowers. 

I am confident that during Prime Minister 

Modi’s second term, India will see a positive 

transformation in all dimensions — economic, 

industrial, political and social — as he takes the 

world’s emerging superpower on a new trajectory 

of growth and development. 

India’s aviation sector has witnessed 

remarkable growth in the last five years and I am 

confident that we will continue to be the fastest 

growing aviation market in the world. We hope 

that our government will address the structural 

challenges facing the sector urgently. If this is 

done, there is no doubt that Indian carriers will 

become leading global players and India, a global 

aviation hub that surpasses Dubai, Abu Dhabi and 

Singapore. 

SpiceJet will continue to play an active role in 

India’s growth story and particularly in the aviation 

sector, where we are constantly setting new 

industry benchmarks and showcasing innovations. 

Among other noteworthy developments, 

in May 2019, we launched SpiceBiz — a new, 

luxurious and comfortable business-class seating 

on our dedicated fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft. The 

new business suite is currently available on select 

sectors on the domestic network. 

In the spirit of a world-class airline, SpiceBiz 

offers an ambience of excitement that includes 

luxurious and ultra-comfortable seats with best 

in class service at an unmatched price. We are 

also drawing plans to offer SpiceBiz on select 

international routes soon. As we sprint on our 

growth path adding capacity and inducting more 

B737s, SpiceJet looks forward to provide you a 

memorable flying experience and our new business 

class offering is yet another step in that direction. 

On the operational side, we are continuing 

to restore normality in the wake of the current 

industry crisis. Starting April 1, 2019, we announced 

106 flights including 73 flights connecting Mumbai, 

16 flights connecting Delhi, and 8 flights connecting 

Mumbai and Delhi. 

On our international network, we launched 

a new Mumbai-Jeddah daily nonstop flight that 

offers greater convenience and flexibility to 

passengers travelling between the two cities for 

pilgrimage, business or leisure. Besides, we have 

started operating our daily non-stop Mumbai- 

Bangkok flight. 

As in the past, we continued to prioritise 

reliability and punctuality, the two primary 

features of our operational excellence. In April 

2019, we once again clocked the industry’s 

highest occupancy at 93.7%. This is the 49th 

consecutive month we have flown highest loads 

in the Indian skies. We extend our gratitude to all 

our passengers for making SpiceJet India’s most 

preferred airline and look forward to carry on the 

winning momentum. 

Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, has come 

to an end. I take this opportunity to greet all our 

passengers celebrating the occasion, in India and 

abroad, a very happy Eid-ul-Fitr.

Carrot & Beans Baton in non-vegetarian

in vegetarian. Passengers taking Q400

dhokla is available as a gluten-free

In. The booking, made via the SpiceJet 

website (www.spicejet.com), can be 

availed latest up to two hours before the 

scheduled departure.

My Flexi Plan 

Planning a trip will be easier 

than ever with SpiceJet’s 

new innovative add-on 

service, My Flexi Plan. 

Passengers can now enjoy the flexibility 

of cancelling or changing the ticket(s) to 

suit their travel plan. If they are certain 

about travel but not about the dates, 

then they can book a ticket by opting 

for this service. Customers can opt for 

this add-on at the time of booking done 

through reservation team by paying a fee 

of `1,500 for domestic travel ticket and 

`1,750 for international travel ticket. The 

service will be applicable only for one 

change or one cancellation per ticket. 

7Carry More On Board 

Making air travel even more 

convenient, SpiceJet’s 

‘Carry More On Board’ 

is a service for travellers 

with heavier cabin baggage. It is 

targeted at passengers who carry 

cabin baggage heavier than 7 kg, 

and do not want to check-in. Fliers 

can carry bags weighing up to 5 kg 

extra, a maximum of 12 kg on board, 

while paying a nominal fee for each 

kg above 7 kg. Bags can be heavier, 

but not larger, and the standard free 

baggage allowances remain as before.

during airport check-in and at airport 

ticket counters

Priority Check-In 

This service provides the passenger a hassle free and comfortable 

check-in experience at the airport with SpiceJet’s dedicated priority 

check-in counter. The passenger can buy Priority Check-In after 

making the booking. It can be bought latest up to two hours before 

the scheduled departure. The service is available only in Manage My Bookings. The 

pre-paid service can be bought for per passenger, per sector of the journey, on the 

payment of the non-refundable fees. A Priority Check-In for flights within and/or 

originating from India costs `300. For flights originating from out of India, the fare 

is `400. The fees are refundable if the booking is cancelled by the passenger or 

the flight is cancelled by the airline. There is no additional fee applicable for infant 

passengers. Passengers who have bought Priority Check-In will have to check-in for 

their flight at the airport check-in counter.

Hand Baggage Only 

This is another unique product that offers a discount to those 

passengers who carry only hand baggage. Available on most 

direct domestic flights, this fare has a minimum 15-day advance 

purchase period, and no free check-in baggage allowance is

TIGER INCREASE IN

According to the Forest Department 

in Maharashtra, the tiger population 

has seen a big jump in the state. In

OF 11 ARTISTS SELECTED 

FROM ALL OVER THE 

COUNTRY 

The sleepy village of 

Gunehar in Himachal 

Pradesh (HP) comes alive 

every three years for a 

contemporary art event, ShopArt 

ArtShop (SA-AS). This time around, 

the third edition of the event, ShopArt 

ArtShop-3 (SA AS-3) is taking place 

between May 15 and June 15. “When 

we started with the first edition in 

2013, we had taken over all the empty 

shop spaces in the village and invited 

artists to occupy these and turn them 

into artists' ateliers, so called 

ArtShops. This time around, we will be 

focussing more on the remaining 

traditional buildings of the village as 

ArtShops. In this way, we also hope to 

draw attention to the changing 

architecture in Indian villages and the 

loss of ecology, heritage and 

aesthetics,” says SAAS-3 Host Frank 

Schlichtmann, a German who moved 

from Germany to HP a few years ago. 

Around 50 artists were 

interviewed for this edition. Finally 

11 were invited for the event who 

were most capable of relating to

SAAS’s method and conceptual theme 

(Borderlines). Those who have made 

it to the final list are all well trained, 

fully professional and highly talented 

in their fields, even though they may 

not score very high on the level of 

fame, popularity or market value 

parameters. The sole motivation of 

the organisers is to draw and promote 

artistic talent and provide artists 

with a wholesome framework to work 

within and prove their mettle. 

The invited artists are from 

different artistic disciplines with 

an emphasis on art practice that 

goes beyond the narrow definition 

of traditional art, i.e. painting, 

sculpture etc., and defines art in 

its broadest form. The primary 

interest of the organisers is in 

concepts and ideas that deal with 

the given topic in thoughtful and 

creative ways and involves a process 

that is comprehensible and can be 

demonstrated openly. 

The actual SA AS residency, paid 

for entirely by the organisers, invites 

the artists to live in the village for 

a 24 day period and work openly on 

the presented concept in/with the 

public spaces the village offers (such 

as primarily empty, economically 

unviable shop-spaces; hence the name 

of the project) in front of curious 

and sometimes prying villagers 

and visitors. The actual week-long 

exhibition, not only demonstrates 

the end result of the artists’ work but 

also incorporates typical local ‘mela’ 

elements, concerts, performances, 

screenings, podium discussions, etc. 

to reach a broad cross-section of the 

society. 

The selected artists are Sultana

(Installation), Pramila Chaudhary 

(Fashion and Textiles), Sarban 

Choudhury (Ceramics/Sculptures), 

Asmita Sarkar (Painting), Amritah

(Ceramics/Installation), Gaurav 

Gokhale (Documentary) and Yash 

Sahai (Music). 

Host Schlichtmann is confident 

ShopArt ArtShop-3 will be an exciting 

and thoughtful reflection on the state 

of the world we live in today and will 

provide unique perspectives into 

the minds and methods of Indian 

artists in dealing with contemporary 

'theories' of "geographic, economic, 

cultural, racial, religious, class, gender 

and sexual identities" (from the 

artists' brief).

“Whatever

nothing to do with it,” says Sikandar 

Malik, my articulate guide for the day. 

“From 1819 to 1926 four women nawabs 

ruled over the city with élan and style — 

promoting art and literature, building 

schools, colleges and hospitals and even 

an exclusive bazaar for women, and 

promoting a cosmopolitan culture,” he 

adds. I am in Bhopal, the City of Lakes, in 

one of India’s largest states, Madhya 

Pradesh. The city offers a traveller a rich 

mix of heritage and history. 

My home away from home is the 

luxurious heritage hotel Jehan Numa 

Palace, set on the slopes of the Shamla 

Hill. I take a walking tour of the city with 

Sikandar. Bhopal, fringed by hills, is built 

around a centerpiece lake and several 

other lakes, all artificial . 

History whispers from every corner 

of the city. Stories of valour and love are 

hidden in every stone. Iqbal Maidan and 

the clutch of heritage buildings around it 

is the epicenter of the Old City. The 

present city of Bhopal was founded by one 

of Emperor Aurangzeb’s Afghan soldiers, 

Dost Mohammed Khan. 

What happened later was 

revolutionary — 18-year-old Qudsia 

Begum seized control after the 

assassination of her husband. She was a 

rebel and refused to follow the purdah 

tradition. She declared that her two-yearold 

daughter Sikander would follow her as 

the ruler of Bhopal, and no one dared 

challenge her decision. 

We walk through the salmon pink 

three storied Gauhar Mahal built with 

stone, adobe bricks and wood, with its 

post Renaissance and Gothic influences 

due to the services of a French architect, 

with pavilions, painted ceilings, 

courtyards and terraces of where the first 

queen lived. “There were no separate 

designated areas for men and women 

because the ruler was a woman herself,”

On the other side of the road is the 

decrepit Shaukat Mahal with intricately 

carved arches and turrets on the roof 

which looks like a church; this was 

constructed in the 1830s as a wedding gift 

for Sikander Jahan Begum, the first 

female ruler of Bhopal. The design is a 

fusion of influences – from French to 

Indo- Islamic. 

In the 1930s, the famous poet Iqbal, 

best known for ‘Sare jahan se achchaa 

Hindustan hamaraa’ visited Bhopal and 

stayed at the Sheesh Mahal here. He was 

supported by the last ruler of Bhopal who 

gave him a pension of Rs 500 per month. 

Today an Eagle monument stands forlorn, 

in remembrance of the poet harking back 

to his love for birds. 

Beyond this, the old city with small 

tempos and rickshaws jostling for space 

with cows, bears the stamp of Shah Jehan 

Begum who built her kingdom 

Shahjanabad here with bazaars, grain 

markets, serais (rest houses), residential 

quarters and an idgah (enclosure for 

prayer) at the highest point in the 

landscape with a terraced lake in the 

centre of the complex. 

Her magnum opus was the Taj Al 

Masjid , one of India’s biggest mosques 

which was started in her reign and 

continued to be built by her daughter after 

her time. Sikandar tells me about how 

when the mosque was being built they 

found the remains of a temple. The Begum 

ordered that the mosque be built a 

distance away. “The Begum would dress 

as Radha and take part in the 

Janmashtami celebrations - such was the 

religious tolerance of those days,” he adds. 

Entering the mosque I am awed by its 

unique fusion of influences — stocky 

pillars with Hindu influences, niches and 

ornate petal designs on ceilings. “It was 

inspired both by the Jama Masjid in Delhi 

and the huge Badshahi Mosque of 

Lahore,” explains Sikandar. What stands 

out for me is a separate entrance for 

women to offer their prayers at the 

mosque. Of course in a city ruled by 

women, that is a no-brainer. 

Close by is the Sadar Manzil - it was 

designed as a Durbar Hall by Shahjehan 

Begum, built around a central courtyard 

with fountains. On the other side is 

Bhopal’s own Taj Mahal with British, 

French, Arabic and Hindu influences — 

the extravagant complex of 120 rooms 

that was the palace of Begum Shah Jahan 

with scallops and cusps, jharonkas, stone 

pillars and arches. After independence it 

was the home of Sindhi refugees from 

Pakistan. Today there are plans to restore 

the decrepit complex into a modern 

luxury hotel. 

Come evening I walk through the 

crowded lanes of the Chowk Bazaar. 

Women in burqas walk through the busy 

lanes, buying glittering zardozi and 

bangles and silver jewellery. Embroidered 

pouches and bags with beads, the 

specialty of the city, beckon from shop 

windows. I walk down lost in thought, 

transported to a time when the begums 

ruled the city and when horse drawn 

carriages clip-clopped down the lanes. I 

can almost smell the jasmine in the air.

He may have been mocked for his 

appearance as the Genie in the remake, 

but he doesn't care. The iconic character 

was famously voiced by the late Robin 

Williams in the original animation and, 

with such big shoes to fill, the new take on 

the classic character didn't exactly get the 

warmest reception when his look was first 

unveiled last year. 

The actor also opened up about why 

he wanted to take on the role, even though 

"he was terrified to take on the 

responsibility." In a candid and heartfelt 

confession, Smith says, "This movie has a 

lot of really great ideas that I love and the 

concept of the Genie, somebody whose 

whole existence is dedicated to helping 

people find themselves and create the 

lives that they want, that aspect is almost 

the purest definition of love. So for me 

playing the Genie — you're always looking 

for something that you can connect to 

with a character that's authentic — that 

devotion and dedication is what I aspire to 

with my life." 

Earlier in February, Smith launched a 

Facebook Watch series called Will Smith's 

Bucket List. The show sees him do things 

like drive a race car, swim with sharks, 

attempt stand-up comedy on stage and 

practice Bollywood dancing. There is also 

a popular Instagram account (with about 

4.5 lakh followers) by the same name. "I'd 

turned 50 and I'd created this wonderful 

life and this wonderful career, but I felt 

trapped by being Will Smith," he said on 

an episode of The Graham Norton 

Show. "I have kids so I can't do that, or I'm 

famous so I can't say that, or people look at 

me so I can't behave like that. So part of 

the bucket list was to give myself the 

freedom to do all of the things that I had 

put in my mind that I couldn't do. I'm now 

being adventurous, and I've always 

wanted to be that." 

You had a large set of shoes to fill, taking 

on the role of Genie, especially after 

Robin Williams had played it. 

I think it was more pajamas! (laughs). I 

produced The Karate Kid with my son 

Jaden, so whenever you’re doing things

that are iconic, it’s always 

terrifying. For me, the first aspect 

was it was live action, so that 

meant it would look and feel really 

different, so I was encouraged by 

that. And secondly, after I watched 

the movie a few times, I saw where 

Robin Williams infused the 

character with a timeless version 

of himself, so I said to myself, 

“What if I just infuse the character 

with a timeless version of myself?” 

And then that opened up for 

me… hip-hop, it opened up fashion. 

Because the Genie is timeless, you 

get to really say and do anything so 

I started to feel confident that I 

could deliver something that was a 

homage to Robin Willians but was 

musically different and just the 

flavour of the character would be 

different enough and unique 

enough that it would be in a 

different lane versus trying to 

compete. 

I got presented the idea to play the 

genie in Aladdin and the first thing is ‘Hell 

no!' So I looked at it and the first thing was 

I didn’t feel like I wanted to touch it. I did 

end up taking it on, mostly because I was 

able to bring my own twist to the songs. 

For “Friend Like Me,” I asked the music 

team to bring in the drum sound from 

“Impeach The President” by the Honey 

Drippers, which Questlove begins to play 

in the clip as I rapped. 

So how did you approach Genie? 

A Disney executive had described the 

Genie as “part Fresh Prince, part 

Hitch.” That was the thing I latched on 

to with Robin Williams. What made the 

Genie special is that even though he was 

in a period piece, the Genie had been 

forward and backwards in time, so 

because the Genie knew all things from 

all time, the references and the way that 

he spoke and the energy that he brought 

to the character was of a specific era of 

Robin Williams. I wanted to do that and 

I really picked that period, the 1990 to 

1996 period of what people most 

remember of the arc that I had created 

and tried to build a character that lived 

in that time and space, so it felt nostalgic 

but also new. 

Also, Guy Ritchie got in some edge to 

it. When you think timeless Disney classic, 

you’re not really thinking Guy Ritchie, but 

that’s a part of what makes it special. He 

brings a beautiful edge to the look and feel 

and the reimagining of Aladdin. Even 

casting — the way that he wanted to cast, 

everything had a little bit more flavour. He 

was pushing the envelope while 

maintaining that nostalgic Disney beauty 

with the action sequences and the music 

background. He’s giving you real current 

edgy flavour while delivering the fun and 

the beauty and the emotion, and also the 

comedy. 

What kind of comedy did you want to 

bring to your Genie? 

I wanted to both pay homage to the 

late Robin Williams’ Genie from 

the iconic animated Aladdin, but 

also bring my own signature 

comedy to the role. There’s a little 

bit less mimicking — there’s a James 

Brown piece that we do but a little 

bit less mimicking. The thing that 

will be the major addition from me 

playing the Genie is the hip-hop 

base. I think that’ll be fun for 

people. I think it’ll stand out as 

unique even in the Disney world. 

There hasn’t been a lot of that hiphop 

flavour in Disney history! 

Speaking of songs, Guy mentioned 

there are a few new songs but which 

one was your favorite to see 

reimagined in this? 

It’s hard to beat “Friend Like Me.” 

That was the first song I recorded. 

It’s funny, I recorded it on a day that 

we weren’t even scheduled. It was the first 

meeting, I came in and I was just meeting 

everybody, my deal wasn’t even all the way 

done but I was like, “I think I’m really 

considering this,” and I went in and met 

the guys doing music and we recorded 

“Friend Like Me.” So it was just hand and 

glove. It fit so perfectly that we all really 

got inspired about the idea of me being 

Genie after listening to two hours’ of work 

in the studio with no preparation. 

You’ve done so many films and, of 

course, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, but 

what did you get a chance to do in this that 

you haven’t done before? 

I got to do everything I know how to do in 

this movie. I got to act and it was comedy 

and beautiful dramatic scenes, I got to 

sing, I got to rap, I got to dance, I got to do 

action sequences — it was everything that 

I’ve trained and learned how to do over 

the last 30 years of entertainment and I got 

to use all in playing the Genie.

you make. To add to that it also has several health benefits that 

make it a favourite in many households. 

Coriander is commonly used in three forms — fresh plant, 

whole dried seeds and in ground form. Roasting the seeds ensures 

that the flavour, aroma and pungency are activated. Ground 

coriander seed is a spice in garam masala. Roasted coriander seeds, 

called dhana dal, are eaten as a snack. The fresh root is one of the

The seeds have a sweet spicy

The leaves when used in food 

does not only lend flavour but 

also gives freshness to the food. 

“Coriander seed is used for 

pickling vegetables. In Russia 

and Central Europe, coriander 

seed is an important ingredient 

in bread making. The people in 

North America use them in 

their cuisine, by mixing the 

powdered seeds ground with 

chili and using it as a condiment 

with meat, and also eating 

leaves as a salad,” says Sidharth 

Bhardwaj, Executive Chef,

Hyderabad Mindspace adds, “It is the 

main ingredient of the two most popular 

South Indian dishes, sambhar and rasam. 

Dhania or coriander powder acts as a 

thickener when used in curries. It also 

makes for a great component in spice rubs 

for fish and chicken, and adds a robust 

flavour when used in making homemade 

pickles.” 

Coriander acts as a spice in terms of 

lending the food its freshness and aroma. 

This brilliant spice also prevents food 

poisoning by being harmful to a range of 

bacteria. “Coriander has a strong aroma 

and if we want to have this aroma infused 

with the food it is wise to never cook for a 

longer time after adding fresh coriander 

to any dish. If this is added in the last 

minute to any dish being cooked and then 

kept covered after removing from the 

flame, the aroma is released into the dish 

and it tastes fresh and aromatic,” says 

Avijit Deb Sharma, Executive Chef Ibis

Rahul Dhavale, Executive Chef, The 

Westin Mumbai Garden City adds, “While 

cooking coriander leaves, they should 

always be used with the stalk because the 

stalk has more flavour than the leaves. It is 

always essential to wash the green 

coriander leaves before chopping since 

washing post chopping always spoils the 

flavour. Garnishing green coriander 

leaves in the end is always beneficial since 

it gives more flavour to the dish.” 

Coriander has been part of many 

cuisines, enticing palates as both a spice 

and herb. “The leaves of coriander, 

popularly known in the US and Mexico as 

cilantro, are fragrant and refreshing with 

a prominent citrus note. It is used as a

garnish as well as in curries, chutneys and 

more. On the other hand, in the seeds the 

flavour of citrus is subdued by a warm and 

nutty aroma that works great in 

marinades especially when paired with 

cumin and cinnamon,” says G V Ramesh,

When using coriander in cooking, you 

need to understand that the seeds of the 

plant are considered a spice, rather than 

the plant. The seeds have a lemony citrus 

flavour when crushed and are warm, 

nutty and spicy. Hence you will need to 

use the fully ripened coriander seeds, 

which are greenish brown in colour which 

gives the best flavour and ensure that it is 

The coriander crop is ready for harvest in about 90 to 110 days depending upon 

the variety and growing season. 

Harvesting has to be done when the fruits are fully ripe and start changing 

colour from green to brown. 

In India, coriander is cultivated over an area of 5.30 lakh hectares with the 

production of 5.62 lakh tonnes and productivity of 943 kg/ha. 

The main states cultivating coriander are Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, 

Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

burns and loses its flavour and aroma.

Hence the best time is to add it after 

sautéing. However if the recipe demands 

for it being added in oil, then ensure the oil 

is not too hot.” It is best to dry roast them to 

get the best flavour and do note that it 

tends to lose its flavour over time. 

METHOD 

Take all the ingredients, except the 

prawns and make a paste. 

Put prawns in a bowl, add the paste 

and marinate for two hours. 

Cook in the tandoor for 10 minutes or 

till it is cooked. 

Serve with coriander and mint 

chutney.

“Coriander is a versatile ingredient. 

Coriander leaves are mostly used as herbs 

to garnish many Indian dishes like soups 

and salads. The coriander seeds on the 

other hand have a rich citrusy flavour and 

can be used as whole and in powdered 

form as well. When grounded fresh, they 

lend a much stronger flavour to the dish 

besides helping maintain the consistency 

of its gravy.” 

Coriander is a good source of dietary 

fibre, iron, magnesium and coriander 

leaves are rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin K 

and protein. They also contain small 

amounts of calcium, phosphorous and 

potassium. Coriander contains antiinflammatory 

properties and helps in 

inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. 

Coriander's antiseptic properties help to 

cure mouth ulcers and it is good for the 

eyes as antioxidants in coriander prevent 

eye diseases.

anemia as it contains high amounts of iron.

Built over the course of four 

centuries, the City Palace at 

Udaipur stands out amongst its 

counterparts across Rajasthan 

and indeed across the country, for the 

sheer variety of options it offers. One can 

easily spend an entire day in the different 

sections of the Palace taking in Mewar’s 

rich culture and heritage balanced with 

contemporary hospitality. Here is our list 

of the best experiences in Udaipur’s 

crowning jewel. 

STATELY ROOMS 

Arrive early at the City Palace and begin 

explorations at the Mardana Mahal, the 

oldest part of the Palace with a series of 

lavishly decorated chambers and 

courtyards interconnected by narrow 

passages and steep stairs. An intricately 

decorated gateway, Ganesh Deodhi, leads 

Blue tiles and colourful stained glass panels make for a delightful 

combination in the Badi Chitrashali section of the City Palace 

to the Rai Angan, the courtyard where the 

Palace was founded by Maharana Udai 

Singh II in 1559CE. Colourful stained 

glass jaalis are found in Chandra Mahal 

and equally colourful pieces of glass and 

mirror cover every surface of Moti Mahal, 

Manak Mahal and the Kanch ki Burj.

the Chinese and Delft tiles of Badi

Here, centred around the large Lakshmi 

Chowk courtyard with a pavilion-like 

structure called the Chowmukha, the 

royal ladies held court. The rooms have 

been converted into galleries showcasing 

precious artefacts and arts. At the Silver 

Gallery are a plethora of objects covered 

with the precious metal, from decanters 

and sprinklers to an entire palanquin. The 

Sculpture Gallery is home to dozens of 

evocative stone sculptures depicting gods 

and goddesses, apsaras, flora and fauna. 

Other galleries include the vast Painting 

Gallery showcasing highlights from the 

Mewar School, the Palanquin Gallery, the 

Costume Gallery, the Music Gallery and 

even a Photography Gallery with some 

prints dating back to as far as the mid-19th 

century.

The Baadi Mahal is home to an exuberant garden 

that was used for royal festivities and banquets 

TERRACE GARDENS 

Although a part of the Mardana Mahal, 

the Baadi Mahal deserves its own special 

mention for being the highest part of the 

City Palace and for its flourishing terrace 

gardens that offer fabulous views of 

Udaipur. Sit under the canopy of trees, 

surrounded by chirping birds and imagine 

the days when royalty and their entourage 

gathered here for banquets and festivities. 

The gardens come with their own marble 

tank that was filled with coloured water 

for frolicking around in Holi. What a sight 

that must have been! 

ART GALLERIES 

The adjoining part of the Palace is the 

Zenana Mahal, or the women’s quarters. 

RETAIL THERAPY 

After exploring the museum part of the 

City Palace, beat the afternoon heat by 

venturing into the many stores along 

Manek Chowk and take your pick from 

souvenirs to handicrafts. Amongst the 

stores here is Aashka, a boutique 

conceptualized by Princess Bhargavi 

Kumari of the Udaipur royal family. 

Aashka has an extensive collection of 

sarees and stoles; jewellery and footwear; 

textiles and home accessories including 

cushion covers, Venetian mirrors and 

furniture covered in thikri-work. There 

are also wooden toys, stationery, wellness 

products and beautifully illustrated books 

on Udaipur’s rich history. 

GLIMMER AND GLEAM 

Venture further into the City Palace 

complex and make your way towards 

Fateh Prakash Palace for a unique 

treasure tucked away inside its Durbar 

Hall. The Crystal Gallery is home to the 

world’s largest private collection of crystal 

objects ranging from the expected to the

By now, all the walking around might have 

taken its toll and the best bet for tired soles 

and weary bones is for some relaxation 

and rejuvenation time. Look no further 

than the Panghat Spa within the City 

Palace complex and choose between 

dozens of massages, beauty services and 

wellness treatments that take inspiration 

from Ayurvedic traditions, aroma and 

heat therapies as well as global healing 

practices. Be sure to grab a cup of herbal 

tea before stepping out for the joyride that 

follows. 

FROM THE WATER 

As the sun sets behind Udaipur’s hills, the 

pastel walls of the Palace bask in a deep 

glow — a sight that is best experienced 

from water instead of land. Head to 

Rameshwar Ghat at the foot of the City 

Palace and hop onto one of the canopied 

boats for a sunset ride around Lake 

Pichola. The City Palace stretches 

magnificently across its eastern bank and 

its colossal size is most evident from here. 

It is undoubtedly the high point of 

Mewar’s architecture and with its 

countless domes and turrets, cupolas and 

jharokhas, screened windows and 

chattris, gardens and terraces, seems 

straight out of a fairy tale. 

A RIVETING STORY 

While dusk falls, make your way back to 

the Manek Chowk for a son-et-lumière 

treat that is presented here each evening 

across the walls of the City Palace. A 

welcome note by the current head of the 

royal family, Shriji Arvind Singh, sets the 

tone for the show that traces the history of 

Mewar from 1500 years ago. Different 

sections of the Palace serve as the 

backdrop as the story moves from 

Chittorgarh to Kumbhalgarh to the 

founding of Udaipur and the subsequent 

events at the City Palace all the way till 

India’s independence. Towards the end, 

the entire edifice from the foundation 

walls to the crowning chattris are lit up 

together in an arresting sight. 

FEAST LIKE A KING 

Overlooking Lake Pichola and its floating 

palaces, the restaurant at The Sunset 

Terrace is the perfect place to reflect upon 

the day even as musicians play their tunes 

and a gentle breeze wafts in over the 

waters. While there is a selection of 

scrumptious dishes from across the world 

on offer, we’d recommend going with 

Indian favourites: from tandoors and 

biryanis inspired by the traditions of the 

north to recipes handed down from the 

royal kitchens. Ask the servers about the 

latter and they might just let you in on 

some secrets.

two words most often 

associated with Sanjay 

Dutt. The jury is still out 

on who the real person really is. Is he 

a man who wronged by the media, as 

many of his close friends believe? Is 

he a son who could never recover from 

his mother’s death? Is he a son whose 

father’s political leanings made him 

an easy target? Or is he a myth, 

created by a consortium of film 

journalists, industry insiders, 

political fiends and adversaries? A 

new book, Sanjay Dutt: One Man, 

Many Lives, tried to answer this – and 

many more questions. In this extract, 

the author looks closely at some of the 

relationships – both friendly and 

adversarial – that the actor built over 

the course of a tumultuous career. 

If a man is known by the company he 

keeps, Sanjay Dutt would appear to be 

a man who thought with his heart and 

rarely used his head. 

A large part of Sanjay’s charisma 

was thanks to his man-boy appeal: the 

bulk of a brontosaurus with the 

emotional quotient of a seven-yearold. 

A man who is always a boy with 

the boys, would never be short of 

colourful company. Neither would he 

be wanting in fiercely loyal friends. 

And that’s how it happened for this 

star, who grew old without really 

growing up. 

As a teenager — or even later — 

Sanjay always had a crowd of friends 

around him — the boys’ club. His 

mother and his aunt Zaheeda were 

convinced, and not without reasons, 

that this bunch was responsible for

his drug addiction and other vices. 

They believed their son was largely 

blameless and that he took to drugs 

after boarding school as a 

recreational habit. 

Back in the city, when he was in 

college, Sanjay claims he was 

extremely tongue-tied in the presence 

of women. At a party, he recounts, a 

friend offered him coke. And thus 

began a long and tumultuous 

relationship with drugs. As word got 

around of his addiction, there were 

more ‘friends’ who plied him with 

more recreational drugs until he 

moved on to heroin. 

The friends from his drug days did 

not quite give up on him. Sanjay 

recounts that after he returned from 

his US rehab, he wanted to keep a low 

profile. As soon as he got home, 

someone pressed the doorbell. It was 

his dealer and a former friend. ‘When 

no one, other than my family, knew 

about my return, this guy not only 

found out that I was back, but he had 

assumed that I would want to do 

drugs again,’ said Sanjay. The ‘friend’ 

stood there with a pack of a new drug. 

Dutt thought for a second. There was 

nothing to stop him from going back 

— but he had everything to lose if he 

did. He kicked the guy out — a 

moment that has been immortalized 

in his biopic. 

But there were other friendships 

that he nurtured, with reciprocation. 

In 2016, right after Sanjay walked out 

of prison, free at last, there was a 

party at his buddy and brother-in-law 

Kumar Gaurav’s new pad. Besides 

close family, there were a handful of 

his friends who had been invited. One 

of them even sat on his lap, as the two 

‘boys’ re-lived their boisterous days as 

chaddi buddies. Paresh Ghelani has 

been a constant at some of Sanjay’s 

most special parties over three 

decades. The Chicago-based 

entrepreneur even flew down to 

Tanzania in 2017 to celebrate with his 

bestie, who turned fifty-eight that 

year. Sanjay calls him ‘Parya’ and the 

latter has always been dead serious 

about being with his friend. That this 

has been a special bond is evident 

from the fact that Vicky Kaushal, the 

actor playing his friend in Sanju, had 

been flown down to meet Parya just to 

get the nuances right.

Sanjay has often claimed that 

there are three or four men whom he 

considers to be his best friends. Other 

than Parya, there is a certain Mac 

from Los Angeles, who he befriended 

during his rehab stint; Imran Ismail; 

and, of course, Kumar Gaurav. 

Kumar Gaurav, who eventually 

married Sanjay’s sister, Namrata, is 

late veteran actor Rajendra Kumar’s 

son. It is said when Sanjay was going 

through one of his first lean phases 

after Rocky for five years — when he 

was struggling, had no films and was 

in deep trouble; Kumar Gaurav picked 

up the film that revived his career. 

Mahesh Bhatt had discussed the 

basic idea of the film that was to 

become Naam — a tale of two brothers 

— with Kumar Gaurav, who thought it 

was a great idea and wanted to 

produce it under his father’s 

production banner. Rajendra Kumar 

being a veteran of the industry, 

realized at once that it was a bad idea 

as far as his son was concerned — he 

knew that the audience would 

empathize more with the darker, 

more complex character. Especially 

when that character was to be played 

by Sanjay Dutt. But Kumar Gaurav 

insisted that they produce the film. 

Kumar Gaurav turned out to be a 

messiah for his buddy with Naam. 

Despite family problems, the two 

have always rallied around each other 

during times of crisis. When Dutt 

came out of prison for the first time, 

he decided to live on his own — and it 

was Kumar Gaurav who stood by him. 

In several interviews, Kumar Gaurav 

has repeatedly spoken of how his 

friendship with his former buddy is 

not exactly the way it used to be, even 

though Gaurav and Namrata’s 

children were really close to Sanjay. 

While some of his oldest 

friendships have withstood the test of 

time, the ones forged later seem to 

have had their share of ups and 

downs. And the one friendship that 

has mirrored his own chequered life 

is the one he shared with his Gups — 

Sanjay Gupta. 

With Gups, Sanjay shared more 

than just his first name. They loved 

the same things in life: guns, gizmos, 

living on the edge — and films, where 

all of these came together. Sanjay 

Dutt met Gupta during the shooting of 

Street Singer. The film never got 

made, but the boys struck a rapport. 

When Gupta sought to make a 

directorial debut, he had the Sippys 

produce his signature mishmash of a 

script — a bit of Deewar, a bit of Jon 

Woo’s A Better Tomorrow and 

background scores and scenes that 

had been inspired by countless other 

films. Aatish, when it released in 

1994, was a talking point for more 

than one reason. It was during the 

Mauritius schedule of this film that 

news broke of Dutt’s involvement 

with the 1993 Bombay Blast case.

GALLERIES GALORE 

Hong Kong’s art scene has been firmly 

established on the world stage thanks to 

200+ art galleries showcasing a plethora of 

artists and styles – there’s everything from 

graphic art, sculpture, and photography to 

pop culture, comics, and graffiti art. Some of 

the biggest international galleries have set 

up shop in Hong Kong, many of them 

concentrated around Central and 

particularly in Soho. 

Begin with White Cube Hong Kong, the 

first of White Cube’s venues to be located 

outside the UK. The high-ceilinged space 

itself is impressive and gallery is spread over 

two floors. LA-based Gagosian is one of the 

world’s leading contemporary art galleries 

and Gagosian Hong Kong carries forward 

that legacy. Occupying a large space in the 

historic Pedder Building, the gallery has 

hosted several solo exhibitions since it 

opened in 2010. H Queen’s, a glittering, 

dedicated gallery building in Central, plays 

host to the 10,000 sq ft David Zwirner, the 

notable American contemporary art 

gallery’s first Asian branch.

include Galerie du Monde, Le Galerie Paris 

1839, Axel Vervoordt, and Ben Brown Fine 

Arts. Sheung Wan is also another art hotspot

Influence Gallery (mixed media), and Sin 

Sin Fine Art (innovative Indonesian and 

international art) beckon you in. 

For contemporary Chinese art, head to 

Tang Contemporary Art at H Queen’s. The 

Le Galerie Paris 1839 

is worth checking out

curators. Don’t miss Pearl Lam Galleries in 

Central’s Pedder Building, which often

the largest collection of local art 

Kong artists, head to Gallery Exit in 

Aberdeen, which spotlights new artists of 

all media. Above Second in Tin Wan is the 

only Hong Kong gallery that focuses on

graffiti, pop culture-influenced artworks, 

and more. 

MUSEUM HOPPING 

Apart from the art galleries, Hong Kong 

also has several museums where you can 

get your art and culture fix. The University 

Museum and Art Gallery is the city’s oldest 

museum and it houses an impressive 

collection of Chinese antiquities, ceramics, 

jade carvings, as well as historical photos 

and pop culture items. 

The Hong Kong Museum of Art in 

Tsim Sha Tsui has the largest collection of 

Hong Kong art in the city. Built in 1962 as 

part of the City

HK Arts Month 

In Hong Kong, art spills out into the street 

WHEN TO GO 

If you are planning a trip to Hong 

Kong, head over in October to 

catch the Hong Kong International 

Photo Festival (usually October 

through December) and the 

month-long New Vision Arts 

Festival (mid-October to mid- 

November). The latter showcases 

cutting-edge performances like 

abstract interpretations of ballet 

and sound design shows. 

March is also a good time to 

catch the annual Hong Kong 

Arts Month, which is a citywide 

celebration of the arts in all forms. 

Things kick off with the Hong 

Kong Arts Festival (Feb 21-March 

23, 2019) with opera, ballet, and 

theatre performances, followed 

by Art Central Hong Kong (March 

27-31, 2019) with international 

galleries setting up shop in the 

city. The finale is the big daddy of 

all – Art Basel Hong Kong (March 

29-31, 2019), which arrived in the 

city in 2013. Held at the Hong 

Kong Convention and Exhibition 

Centre, the show features premier 

galleries, half of which are from 

Asia and Asia-Pacific region giving 

a major fillip to the local art scene.

STREET SMART 

In Hong Kong, art is not restricted to 

museums and galleries but it spills out into 

the streets in colourful abandon. A major 

impetus to the city’s street art scene was the 

advent of HK Walls in 2014. This annual 

street art festival began as a community 

project that focussed on one neighbourhood 

every year and transformed walls and shop 

fronts into vivid pieces of art. There are 

several street art tours that help you 

navigate the city like those offered by Hong 

Kong Street Art Tours 

(hongkongstreetarttours.com) and 

Accidental Art (accidentalart.co). 

However, if you want to take a selfguided 

tour, here are some of the places 

you should hit. Central and Sheung Wan 

are major street art hotspots where you 

will find the famous mural of old Hong 

Kong townhouses on a bright blue 

background at the corner of Graham 

Street, a massive Bruce Lee mural outside 

Cawah Arts Gallery, and a multi-coloured 

fox on Upper Station Street. The ‘Rainbow 

Thief’ mural on the Man Fung Building in 

Sham Shui Po is a must-see as is the ‘Wall 

of Fame’ in Mong Kok. The gritty Wong 

Chuk Hang neighbourhood in Southern 

Hong Kong also has some cool street art, 

especially on the E Tat Factory Building 

and on Yip Fat Street.

hundred indie designers and artists have 

set up ateliers here and you will find 

everything from fashion accessories to 

jewellery, home ware and more. The 

central courtyard often hosts pop-ups and 

exhibitions. 

Head over to West Kowloon where the 

M+ Pavilion stands in all its cantilevered 

glory with the outdoor terrace seemingly 

floating above the manicured lawn. This 

futuristic event space has a running 

calendar of visual arts exhibitions. The Fo 

Tan Industrial Area is another upcoming 

design hub where you will find Fo Tan 

Studios, a cluster of art studios run by 

painters, sculptors, illustrators, and other 

artists. The studios often run open days 

when the artists hold workshops so you can 

try your hand at ceramic pottery, abstract 

painting, silk-screen printing, and more.

A RECENT STUDY ANALYSES WHY INDIAN WOMEN 

TRAVELLERS ARE LIVING THEIR ADVENTURE DREAM 

AND THE FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THEIR CHOICES OF 

ACTIVITIES AND DESTINATIONS 

The last decade has witnessed 

a consistent rise in the 

disposable income of people, 

enabling more to travel. 

Women travellers have become more 

independent and empowered owing to 

this prosperity. The growing income 

compounded by several other factors has 

led to an increase in the number of women 

travelling independently. Their purpose to 

travel ranges from pilgrimage to leisure. 

An internal study by travel company Cox 

& Kings throws some interesting findings 

about women who take to adventure as a 

purpose to travel. Women in Adventure 

Travel studies the women travellers' 

participation in adventure travel and 

factors influencing them. 

According to the report, there has 

been a 32 per cent year-on-year increase in 

the number of women travellers choosing 

adventure. The largest number of these 

women were Business / Department 

Heads followed by Managers, Writers and 

Artists / Designers, in that order. Majority 

of the women were from Mumbai, 

followed by Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai 

and Kolkata. 

In order of importance, here are what 

women focus on before choosing to opt for 

adventure: safety, food, places to visit and 

airfare to the destination. What exactly 

drives these women to seek adventure 

travel. Here are the main reasons: 

• 28 per cent want to seek liberation 

and independence from a hectic life. They 

yearn for adventure to deal with a more 

stressful life. 

• 22 per cent talk of an urge to explore 

unseen and remote places. 

• 21 per cent like indulging in 

adventure activities while being amidst 

nature. 

• 18 per cent cite the want of 

adrenaline rush to choose adventure 

travel. 

• 11 per cent say they wish to take on 

challenging activities 

Among the adventure activities, 

diving seems to be most in demand 

followed by trekking, walking, cycling, 

rafting, biking and sailing, in that order. 

The domestic destinations most favoured 

are Hampi, Pondicherry, Ladakh, Spiti, 

Rishikesh, Gokarna, Meghalaya, 

Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. 

With the number of influencers and 

independent women travel groups 

increasing, social media is encouraging 

more women to consider adventure travel 

as part of their plans. There are many 

more guides and information on 

destinations from a woman’s point of view 

and experiences to share and learn on 

social media that is making a big 

difference to how and where women 

travel today. 

Here are some other findings of the 

study: 

• Travelling solo has seen a marginal 

increase of 9 per cent as compared to the 

previous year (2017). 

• Travelling with friends (women 

only) has grown by 13 per cent. 

• Group travel witnessed an increase 

of about 5 per cent.

As a schoolboy staying in an 

Indian Air Force housing colony 

somewhere in north India, 

Deepanker Mukherji once came 

across large-sized eggs. Curious, he 

`hatched’ them under a bulb and was 

pleasantly surprised to see three little 

peacocks emerge a few days later. The young 

lad promptly placed them in a hen’s 

enclosure in his backyard. The mother hen 

accepted the peahens and started raising 

them along with her own brood. This little 

drama stirred a life-long passion in 

Mukherji for nature and her amazing ways, 

one that would culminate in him becoming 

the General Manager of Forsyth’s Lodge 30 

years later. 

Located 135 km away from Bhopal in 

Bijakheri village, Hoshangabad district,

This is done by Mukherji and his team 

of five naturalists spending as much time 

as possible with the lodge’s guests. They 

form the core of Forsyth Lodge’s accent on 

its `bonding with nature’ philosophy. The 

five young naturalists, each from a 

different part of the country, are welltrained, 

well-educated and are passionate 

about the surrounding Satpura Nature 

Park and its denizens. 

The five are a disparate bunch. 

Vineith Mahadev, the most experienced 

of the lot, has been trekking the ranges of 

the Western Ghats since he was nine years 

of age. The perennially smiling Animesh 

Manna has dabbled in nature and wildlife 

for more than five years. He had decided 

to dedicate his life to nature even before 

finishing his studies in Kokata. Saee 

Gundawar, originally from Pune, calls 

herself a “traveller with strong 

environmental ties” and one who has 

“wandered across the globe in my pursuit 

of new experiences.” 

Asim Zafar grew up in Jharkhand. It 

was while schooling there that he grew 

drawn towards nature, having lunch and 

playing under Gulmohar and Kadam 

trees. The baby of the team, he was 

working in Bollywood as an Assistant 

Director, when he realized that he would 

be most happy away from the city. He 

worked first in Sharavathi Valley in the 

Western Ghats, before joining Forsyth. 

Apart from enlightening guests 

during jeep safaris and walking tours, the 

naturalists accompany them on exciting 

outings. This includes trips to the 

Pachmarhi Plateau, a verdant home to 

endemic plants and birds, elusive 

mammals and a diverse group of 

butterflies, dragonflies, amphibians and 

reptiles. Guests can also go on the Forsyth 

Trail along the path taken by Captain 

James Forsyth of the Bengal Lancer in the 

1850s — the lodge is named after him. 

Then there is camping at the 

JamaniDev campsite in the buffer zone of 

Satpura National Park, involving resting 

on the banks of the Denwa River after a 

long day of jungle adventure. There is also 

something for the kids. The Jr. Rangers 

Programme is an interactive course that 

teaches them the ways of the jungle.

daggers on display. Within glass cases you 

can see dagger maker tools, Emirati 

dagger parts and more. Jehangir Alam

each dagger takes almost a month to make 

and each part is made by almost five 

different people who have skills in 

various materials. Goat skin is used to 

make the covering of the dagger as it is 

more durable and easy to sew. 

For a different experience, head to the 

Museum of Illusions that will test your 

mind, play tricks and give you a whole 

new lesson on how perspectives matter. 

Located in the Al Seef heritage area, the 

museum has several interactive models 

that you can actually touch and feel while 

you solve cryptic puzzles along the way. 

This is where you will click many 

photographs so make sure your camera is 

fully charged. And while the Grand Souk 

at Deira is a must-see, do stop at the 

Municipal Museum here that overlooks 

the creek. The building has retained its 

traditional rooms which today house old 

documents and is an ode to municipality 

history. 

With a vibrant restaurant scene, you 

are never too far away from food in Dubai. 

Interestingly the food here is a spread of 

varied cuisines courtesy the large 

expatriate population of the city. For an 

elevated dining experience — literally and 

figuratively — book a table at Atmosphere, 

the tallest restaurant in the world. You 

can sample a three course menu here that 

includes starters like Organic Salmon 

Gravelax, and Hand Dived Scallop; main 

course that includes Wild Seabass, 

Celeriac cooked as a risotto; and desserts

Karnataka to offer hand transplantation

THE GIFT OF LIFE TO AN INFANT 

SUFFERING FROM A FATAL BLOOD 

DISORDER 

You need not be a doctor to save 

a life. A humane heart backed 

with strong conviction and 

grit will do the trick. Meet 

Rany Scaria, SpiceJet’s 23-year-old 

ground staff, based at Cochin airport, 

Kerala. The young girl gifted someone a 

second chance at life. Rany aspired to be a 

nurse like many of her friends when she 

completed her board exams. She had 

nurtured this ambition with a deep desire 

to save lives. However, destiny took her 

through a different route but gave her a 

chance to save a life in a special way when 

she became a blood stem cell donor. 

Blood cancer, thalassemia and 100 

other fatal blood disorders can be cured 

through a blood stem cell transplant. 

However, there must be an HLA matched 

(Human Leukocyte Antigen – genetically 

partially matched) donor who can donate 

their blood stem cells or bone marrow. 

There are only 25 per cent chances of 

finding an HLA matched donor within the 

family. Otherwise patients have to depend 

on a matched but unrelated donor. The 

probability of finding suitable unrelated 

donors is 1:10,000 to 1 in over 10 lakh. 

Every year thousands of lives are lost in 

the absence of a match. DATRI Blood Stem 

Cell Donors Registry, an NGO, was set up 

in 2009 with a vision to create a society in 

which every patient in need of life-saving 

blood stem cells, is provided with an 

opportunity to find a HLA matched, 

willing donor. DATRI has more than four 

lakh registered donors and among them, 

up to May 2019, more than 500 donors had 

donated to save lives. 

Over 1,20,000 people are affected by 

blood disorders every year in India and 30 

per cent of them are children. Therefore, 

to spread awareness about blood stem cell 

donation and save lives, DATRI conducts 

awareness and donor recruitment drives 

in corporates, colleges and local 

communities to increase the pool of 

willing healthy potential lifesavers. Rany 

was recruited as a potential blood stem 

cell donor during one such drive 

conducted by DATRI’s head for donor 

recruitment in Kerala, Aby Sam John, at 

Santhigiri College of Computer Science in 

Idukki district. 

Three years later, Rany, now a 

Customer Service Executive (CSE) at 

SpiceJet, which she had joined on August 

1, 2017, received a call from DATRI that 

she was a match for an infant suffering 

from a fatal blood disorder. Though Rany 

was excited to receive the information, it 

was not exciting for her family. Her 

brothers, Robin and Roy Scaria, were 

worried and emphatic in their refusal. 

Rany was uncertain to even broach the 

topic with her parents. An emotional 

roller-coaster ride started for Rany. On 

the one hand she felt for the infant patient 

but on the other, she was frightened to 

take a decision. Finally, due to her 

persistence, her brothers relented and 

said, “Well, if it proves to be safe for you,

DATRI’s donor coordinator, Athulya 

Krishna, immediately put her in touch 

with Dr. Neeraj Sidharthan, Haemeto- 

Oncologist from the Amrita Institute of 

Medical Sciences, Cochin. He told Rany 

and her brothers that the donation process 

involves three steps: a complete master 

health check-up for Rany; five days of 

GCSF (Granulocyte Colony Stimulating 

Factor) injections to mobilize the blood 

stem cells from the bone marrow to the 

circulating blood; and finally, the 

donation process, wherein two sterile 

needles are inserted in the two arms. 

Blood is taken from one arm, 

processed through an apheresis machine, 

separating blood stem cells, and the 

remaining blood is returned to the donor 

through the other arm. Dr. Neeraj allayed 

all the doubts of Rany and her brothers. 

Finally, she was ready to donate. Her 

mission was to somehow save a life. 

Rany went through the master health 

check-up and took the GCSF injections 

amidst her duty for five days. “I must 

thank my Duty Manager, Ms. Jisha Jose, 

who was cooperative and permitted me to 

take GCSF injections in between my duty. 

I was made aware that GCSF is a type of 

protein made in the body. So I was 

convinced that it is completely fine to take 

during working hours, without getting 

distracted from work. It was adventurous 

and thrilling.” 

Finally, the donation day arrived. 

Unfortunately, doctors could not find the 

veins in her arms. “I was tensed, 

wondering if I would be able to donate. 

Until now DATRI was requesting for 

donation on behalf of the patient, now I 

started requesting them to find the veins 

so that I could save the infant. I already 

felt connected with the baby even before 

my blood stem cells could grow in her 

body,” says Rany. This commitment of 

Rany, made the donation a success, via her 

femoral vein. Her parents Scaria Devasia 

and Mary Scaria were finally informed 

and were proud of her humane gesture. 

After the donation Rany said, “It was 

like blood donation, just a little longer in 

duration. Everyone who is between 18 to 

50 years and healthy must sign up as a 

blood stem cell donor with DATRI to gift a 

life. Imagine you could save a Life one day. 

As ethnicity is important in finding a 

match, only Indians can help Indians.” 

Ethnicity plays a major role in blood 

stem cell donation. The probability of 

finding a matched unrelated donor from 

the patient’s community is higher. Thus, it 

becomes imperative to have a diverse 

database to help every patient find a 

second chance at life. Despite DATRI 

being India’s largest blood stem cell 

donors registry, the database does not 

even have one per cent of the population 

registered as donors. DATRI Blood Stem 

Cell Donors Registry incurs Rs 1,800 to 

add one donor to the registry and as a nonprofit 

organization requires both blood 

stem cell donors and monetary donors 

who can support their lifesaving efforts to 

take their mission forward and save 

precious lives. DATRI and the patients, 

waiting to find a match, want many like 

Rany to come forward to gift a life.

IS EQUITY INVESTING AN ART OR A SCIENCE?

HUMAN BEINGS HAVE A peculiar 

habit of categorizing anything 

and everything around them. This 

makes the oft-heard debate about 

categorization of a stream/ field of 

work as an art or science anything 

but surprising. While science is 

more fact-driven and objective, art 

involves subjectivity. 

Like countless other domains, 

equity investing has not escaped 

this debate of ‘Art or Science’. 

However, we would be barking 

up the wrong tree by trying to 

classify equity investing as either 

an art or a science. Equity investing 

is not solely science or art. It is 

both. Application of quantitative 

research, financial models etc. gives 

investing a truly scientific flavour. 

However, use of financial models 

in investing is similar to that of 

navigation tools in driving a car. 

They may tell you the suggested 

route from Point A to Point B, 

however, they may not reveal 

critical information about quality 

of road, accidents along the route, 

difficulty of terrain etc. 

The art is in using one’s prudent 

judgement, intuition, common sense 

and experience in assimilating 

information and making informed 

decisions. The role of emotions in 

finance brings into play the artsy 

nature of equity investing. 

A case in point is the variability 

of SENSEX returns over the last 

four decades. SENSEX has grown ~ 

311 times at a CAGR of ~ 15% during 

this period. This growth is hardly 

surprising considering that it has 

been in line with India’s Nominal 

GDP Growth of ~ 14% during 

the period. The scientific aspect 

of investing would justify this 

growth of SENSEX in line with the 

economic growth. However, given 

the volatile nature of equities, there 

were only few years over this period 

where the returns were close to the 

CAGR of 15%. 

Variability of short term equity 

returns resembles the oscillation 

of a pendulum from one extreme 

to the other. Fiscal year returns of 

SENSEX (since 1979) have ranged 

from loss of ~ 47% to gain of ~ 267%. 

In 27 out of 40 years, returns were 

positive, while in 13 years, SENSEX 

yielded negative returns with 8 

years witnessing losses in excess of 

10%. Investors could have earned 

returns significantly higher than 

CAGR of 15% by staying invested 

and investing more during such 

market downturns. However, 

most investors exhibit various 

behavioural biases and end up 

buying high and selling low. 

This unpredictable nature 

of markets brings into play the 

art of equity investing where 

investor’s judgement, patience, 

discipline and ability to tide over 

behavioural biases and paranoia 

are as important as economic 

fundamentals and research in 

determining his wealth creation 

potential. 

The “Science” of investing 

suggests the proposed roadmap to 

your financial goals and the “Art“of 

investing deals with how you can go 

about it. While the Art vs. Science 

argument may not die down soon, 

an investor looking for long term 

wealth creation would do well to 

approach equity investing as a 

combination of Art (Behavioural 

finance) and Science (Economic 

fundamentals) without ignoring 

either.

SpiceJet launches daily 

non-stop flight to Jeddah 

from Mumbai 

SpiceJet has introduced a daily nonstop 

flight on the Mumbai-Jeddah- 

Mumbai sector. The airline announced 

the launch of six new flights 

connecting the country’s financial 

capital. The new flight to Jeddah is 

effective July 5, 2019 and the domestic 

flights are effective May 20, 2019. 

Mumbai is the third destination after 

Hyderabad and Kozhikode which is 

being connected by SpiceJet with the 

pilgrim city of Jeddah. 

SpiceJet’s flight SG 68 will depart 

from Mumbai at 7.30 pm (all local 

times) and arrive in Jeddah at 10.15 pm 

on the same day. The return flight SG 

69 will depart at 11.30 pm and reach 

Mumbai at 6.20 am on the following 

day. 

SpiceJet launches 20 new 

domestic flights 

SpiceJet has launched 20 new domestic 

flights with 18 of those connecting 

the country’s financial capital with a 

host of metro and non-metro cities. 

The new flights are effective from 

the last week of May. In line with the 

airline’s commitment on enhancing 

regional connectivity, SpiceJet has 

introduced new flights on the Mumbai- 

Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai- 

Vijayawada and Mumbai-Tirupati 

sectors. SpiceJet will also enhance 

operations with additional frequencies 

on the Mumbai-Goa (4th frequency), 

Mumbai-Hyderabad (6th frequency), 

Mumbai-Kochi (3rd frequency), 

Mumbai-Kolkata (5th frequency), 

Mumbai-Kanpur (2nd frequency) and 

Mumbai-Patna (3rd frequency) sectors. 

The airline has also announced an 

additional flight on the Kolkata-Patna 

route (2nd frequency).All the new 

flights introduced will be operational 

daily, except the flight on the Mumbai- 

Kolkata sector which will be operational 

all days of the week except Wednesday 

and Sunday. The airline will deploy its 

Boeing 737 NG aircraft on these routes. 

The airline has been working towards 

introducing new flights and frequencies 

to restore normalcy. Starting April 1, 

2019, SpiceJet has announced 106 new 

flights which include 73 connecting 

Mumbai, 16 connecting Delhi and 8 

flights between Mumbai and Delhi. 

With the new flights, passengers from 

Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayawada, Goa, 

Hyderabad, Tirupati, Kochi, Kolkata, 

Kanpur and Patna will be able to 

easily travel to a host of other cities 

both on SpiceJet’s domestic as well as 

international network via Mumbai.

not from Jaisalmer originally but 

I have stayed for several years 

with my family in the Golden 

City of India. The city gets this 

tag from the yellow sand and 

sandstone giving a yellow tinge 

to every building in the city.

Best thing about Jaisalmer: 

Although the location is one 

of the warmest places in India, 

life never stops for the locals. 

Despite changes in attire, food and leisure 

activities, people are strongly bound to 

their religion. Camel Safari in the sand 

dunes of Jaisalmer is an unforgettable 

experience. Another personal favorite 

is the uniquely designed puppet which 

turns into a different puppet when 

inverted. I also like the handmade 

products of Jaisalmer like bags, footwear, 

clothes, jewellery and yellow sandstone 

showpieces. 

How Jaisalmer is different from other 

big Indian cities: The warmth of the local 

people is something you will not find 

anywhere else. They display true essence 

of Indian hospitality and treat guests like 

God. The people here are also artistically 

inclined — most of them sing and dance 

really well. In addition, the city is also 

comparatively less polluted. 

Favourite eating place: I love the food 

at Trio. It is a lovely place with beautiful 

views of the palace. The food here is 

best enjoyed during afternoon in the 

warmth of the winter sun. The interiors 

of the restaurant have been modified to 

generate a royal feel. I love the traditional 

Rajasthani Thali here. 

Local attractions: The Jaisalmer Fort is 

more than 800 years old. Patwon ki Haveli 

was one of the first of many impressive 

havelis built in the city. Gadisar Lake 

amazes you with its many migratory birds. 

And a Sam Dunes desert safari is just 

what you need to relax your jaded nerves. 

Which are the other places where 

you have stayed in India? How does 

Jaisalmer compare to them? I have 

stayed in Ajmer, Jaipur and Amritsar. Each 

city is unique in its own way. But Jaisalmer 

has a charm of its own which you will not 

find anywhere else.
