Tinley Park resident Sal
Milazzo, an Army veteran
of the Korean War, was
grateful for the Village’s
ceremony and he hoped
that the meaning of Memorial
Day would be remembered
as families enjoyed
the rest of the holiday.
“It’s one thing to have
this function and everything,
but we sometimes
lose track of the men and
women who died in combat
and it goes by the wayside.
I’m hoping that more
people stay attuned to
what Memorial Day is all
about,” said Milazzo.
Mokena resident Fred
Cagle, Past Commander of
VFW Post 2791, spent 32
years serving the country.
As he reflected on those
who made the ultimate
sacrifice, he also took time
out before the ceremony
to share his appreciation
for the next generation of
service members including
his granddaughter who
recently enlisted in the
Army.
“It’s a great service and
I’m proud to have done
it. I was Command Sergeant
Major and it was
inspiring to see all the
new soldiers coming in,
the young people who all
volunteered. They’re motivated.
They’re dedicated.
They’re more educated
than I was when I went in
and it’s great,” said Cagle.
“I love it.”
The patriotism of the
next generation was also
highlighted during the ceremony
as Collin Standish
– the Voice of Democracy
Winner – shared an essay
he wrote entitled, “Why
My Vote Matters.”
The Memorial Day Ceremony
also paid tribute
to the recipients of new
paver bricks that have
been incorporated into
the walkway at the Gen.
Patrick E. Rea Veterans
Plaza. W.D. Rasmussen
III (Navy Corpsman), Jason
R. Brown, (US Coast
Guard), Anthony Czerwien
(US Army), James
Rago (Navy) and Colleen
Simon (Veterans Commission
Member) were all
honored in 2019.
Reflecting on the meaning
of the occasion, Roberts
noted that Memorial
Day is a one-of-a-kind
holiday.
“Armed Forces Day celebrates
everyone who currently
wears the uniform.
Then we have Veterans
Day and that is for people
who wore the uniform and
were able to return,” said
Roberts. “Memorial Day
is dedicated to those who
never took that uniform
off. They died in service to
our country, protecting our
freedoms, and that’s why
we do this today.”
The Veterans Commission
is looking forward to
offering the Tinley Park
community even more
ways to honor military service.
Roberts said that the
commission will soon be
breaking ground on a tank
display along Veterans
Parkway which will serve
as a landmark as well as
provide another location
to reflect on the service of
military personnel.
