Glenbrook North celebrates Class of 2019 graduates
Neil Milbert
Freelance Reporter
Speaking at the 66th
annual Glenbrook North
commencement exercises,
Samantha Lasky chronicled
the identity transformation
from “I to “we” that
she and the others in the
Class of 2019 experienced
during the four years they
spent at the high school at
2300 Shermer Road.
“We did this. We persevered.
We are the Class
of 2019,” she said at the
beginning of her Sunday,
June 2 address in the Forrest
S. Sheely Center for
the Performing Arts that
was filled to capacity with
family, friends and faculty.
“We came here as individuals.
As time passed
you saw how our individuality
transformed into
a new identity. Look at us
— how we’ve grown and
flourished. Notice how our
14-year-old skin has shed.
“As we reach the end of
these four years we have
to let go of the we that
we have created. We grew
up here and we changed
here.”
Lasky’s address was
entitled “Out of 490”
with 490 indicative of the
number of graduates.
The graduation exercises
began when Glenbrook
North Orchestra, conducted
by Aaron Kaplan and
Kristin Meyer, played the
traditional processional as
the 490 Spartans in caps
and gowns walked down
the aisles to their seats on
the stage.
Next came Lasky’s address
after which the Glenbrook
North Choir, under
the direction of Chad Davidson,
sang “Don’t Forget
Where You Belong”
and Abigail Berkowitz,
GBN graduates (left to right) Jonathan Gordon, Julianna
Jamie Rosenberg and Lily
Rothschild, of the Senior
Class Board, presented the
class gift, art works to be
displayed in the Student
Activities Center.
Then, GBN Principal
Dr. John L. Finan stepped
to the microphone to
present the class.
Finan began his remarks
by noting that this was the
final graduation ceremony
for retiring Glenbrook
High School District 225
Superintendent Dr. Mike
Riggle, who has had a distinguished
20-year career
in the district, first as GBN
principal for 11 years and
then as superintendent.
Finan went on to enumerate
the many accomplishments
of members of the
class in academic and
athletic endeavors.
Dr. Riggle followed with
his “Acceptance of the
Class of 2019” remarks.
“These Spartans have
forged a legacy that will
long be remembered and
admired,” he told the audience.
“Each of them now
stands ready to leave GBN
and face the future.”
Speaking to the graduates,
Dr. Riggle said: “The
path you now follow will
be one of your own making
rather than one that has
been shaped by others.”
He concluded by quoting
Dr. Martin Luther
King: “The time is always
right to do what is right.”
Diplomas then were
presented by District 225
Board of Education President
Bruce Doughty and
board members Karen
Hanley, Dr. Marcelo Sztainberg
and Joel Taub.
Northbrook Village Board
Northbrook Court redevelopment up for final vote June 11
Chris Pullam
Freelance Reporter
The Northbrook Court
redevelopment project is
now one vote away from
approval.
During its Tuesday, May
28 meeting, the Northbrook
Village Board voted
6-1 to have village staff
draw up final approval
documents, which will
be considered during the
board’s Tuesday, June 11
meeting. Only Trustee Jason
Han, who so far has
voted against every action
supporting the redevelopment,
opposed the motion.
The proposed mixeduse
redevelopment plan
for the west end of the
Northbrook Court Shopping
Center, located at
1315-1825 Lake Cook
Road, would include up
to 315 luxury apartments
in a five-story residential
structure, which would sit
atop two levels of indoor
parking containing 432
parking stalls for the residential
building. It would
also house a grocery store
and several restaurant and
retail spaces.
The applicant, Northbrook
Anchor Acquisition,
also proposed approximately
106,000 square feet
of new retail development,
as well as redevelopment
of approximately 72,000
square feet of the west end
of the existing shopping
center, where Macy’s currently
connects to the mall.
The project includes
a reconfiguration of the
road that loops around the
Northbrook Court, with
the inclusion of a dedicated
bike lane in a portion of
the roadway area adjacent
to the residential portion of
the redevelopment.
Northbrook residents
ROUND IT UP
A brief recap of Village Board action on Tuesday,
May 28:
• The Village Board authorized an agreement for
fire hydrant painting with Alpha Paintworks, of Chicago,
in the three-year total amount of $109,200.
• Trustees approved an agreement with Preform
Traffic Control Systems for pavement marking
services.
• The Board supported a $3,940 contract with
Raynor Door Company, of Northfield, for overhead
door maintenance services.
spent nearly two hours addressing
the board about
the proposal.
“You can vote no…
[but then] what happens?”
asked resident Mike Scolaro,
a former Village Board
trustee. “Nothing. We have
a big sign if you go past
Northbrook Court right
now that says ‘going out of
business’ at Macy’s. That
sign will be replaced by
nothing. It will be replaced
by a building that will be
torn down or vacant. There
won’t be cars in front of it.
There will be less cars at
Northbrook Court, less tax
collections and further loss
of a Class-A mall.”
While many speakers
agreed with him, several
supported the general plan
while opposing specific
details, such as the location
of the grocery store
or the size of the setbacks,
which would situate an
80-foot-tall building only
100 feet away from private
backyards.
One fix, favored by resident
Leonard Ginzburg, is
to utilize the applicant’s
alternative plan that places
the grocery store farther
away from private
properties.
“I think the presentation
the applicant has provided
you is basically a smokeand-mirrors
game,” he
During its Tuesday, May 28 meeting, the Northbrook Village Board voted 6-1 to
have village staff draw up final approval documents for a massive proposed
redevelopment of Northbrook Court, which will likely be considered during the
board’s Tuesday, June 11 meeting. Rendering Courtesy of the Village of Northbrook
said. “They want the grocery
store to be visible
from Lake Cook Road …
but not a single time has
the applicant said who is
actually interested in [that
space] or if they have a letter
of intent. Multiple grocery
stores in the area have
gone bankrupt, so who
wants to build there?
“… They have secondary
plans to redesign
the property if a grocer
doesn’t come in, and if it
doesn’t come in, there’s
no need for it to be on the
north side of the property
in the first place.”
Previously, during their
April 23 meeting, trustees
preemptively created
a Tax Increment Financing
District to support the
proposed redevelopment.
Only Han opposed that
action.
If the redevelopment is
eventually approved, the
overall property value of
Northbrook Court would
increase following the upgrades,
causing its property
taxes to increase. By
creating a TIF District
around the mall, trustees
would be subsidizing construction
costs by waving
only the additional taxes
over a 23-year period.
Either the Village Board
or Plan Commission could
still scrap the actual project,
according to Village
Attorney Steve Elrod, if
the trustees and commissioners
are unable to come
to an agreement with the
developer. If that were to
happen, the TIF would continue
to exist as a potential
draw to other developers.
Currently, a redevelopment
agreement is being
drafted that sets forth the
terms for the $21.5 million
in TIF financing in
a “pay-as-you-go” format.
The TIF agreement
will also include requirements
that the developer
make various school district
payments, including
a one-time supplemental
impact fee of $95,000 to
Glenbrook High Schools
District 225 and $225,000
to Northbrook School
District 28.
Another section of the
redevelopment agreement
will establish the terms
and conditions of the $5.5
million that would come
from a sales tax rebate.
The sales tax rebate would
come from increased sales
tax revenues generated
from Northbrook Court
following the redevelopment
of the property.
These funds would be
used to improve the existing
shopping center. Sales
taxes collected above the
pre-established base sales
tax collection amount of
$4,425,000 — the estimated
2017 sales tax receipts
from the existing mall,
plus $425,000 to account
for future Village fire,
EMS and police services
in the center — would be
split on a 50/50 basis with
the developer and the Village
until the sales tax
incentive amount is paid
or 20 years, whichever
occurs first.
In defending the TIF,
Trustee Kathryn Ciesla
argued that Northbrook
Court “is one of our strongest
economic engines”
and provides approximately
30 percent of the
village’s tax revenue.
“I know this mall cannot
continue as a 1970sera
center,” she said. “It
needs to evolve or it will
simply decline. We’ve
known Macy’s is going
out of business for a long
time. … It’s unrealistic to
assume that another largescale
retail tenant will fill
that space, so it’s mostly
likely the building would
come down or stay fallow
for a long time.”
Following prior public
comments requesting the
incorporation of affordable
housing, Northbrook
Anchor Acquisition agreed
to provide $750,000 in
seed money to help enact
a village-wide affordable
housing plan if the Village
Board approves such an
ordinance down the road.
But the compromise
didn’t appease Han.
“I don’t support the idea
of an affordable housing
fund,” he said. “I support
affordable housing, but we
don’t have a plan yet. We
don’t have anything that
will address the $750,000.
What would we do with
it? How would we implement
the fund? I think this
only encourages future developers
to pay this fee in
lieu of developing actual
affordable housing … I
support developing actual
affordable housing.”

laundry baskets (both of which he is too big for,
but don’t tell him that)!
Loyola Academy’s Honors Chambers Singers kick of the school’s graduation
ceremony on May 25 by singing the National Anthem. Megan Floyd/22nd Century Media
school has prepared them
for their future.
“I think Loyola has definitely
prepared all of us
very well for our future,
whatever that is for each
of us,” she said. “Just
with the level of coursework
and the relationships
we’ve made with teachers,
we’ve all kind of been
able to just be better people
and be more prepared
for whatever it is that
we’re heading, or whatever
path we’re heading
on. Especially for me, I’m
planning on going into the
medical field, so I think
Loyola’s science department
has really prepared
me and students like that
to get into that, to get into
that field and to know and
to be prepared for the level
of work that will come
with that.”
The Loyola class
of 2019 faced a number
of hardships that
other schools may not
go through, including a
change in leadership as
Charlie Heintz took over
as principal after the resignation
of Dr. Kathryn
Baal.
Since then, Heintz has
been named the school’s
full-time principal and
looks to lead the Academy
into the future.
This year’s class is the
first that has seen multiple
years of the LA Way
program, a program that
is designed in developing
leadership skills, a
program started last year.
Heintz made sure to
spotlight the college
counseling department,
especially Jamie Simon,
who has been key with
working in the Chicago
Scholars Program. Loyola
became involved with the
program, one that is a cooperative
group between
colleges and universities
and under represented minority
students who live in
the city of Chicago. Students
who are identified
as college scholars and
meet those requirements
can go and in a short interview
format with a variety
of schools, generally
get determinations on admissions
and levels of financial
aid, if not that day
within a very short period
of time. This year around
25 students were named
Chicago Scholars.
Heintz noted that of the
493 graduating seniors,
they are attending 131 different
colleges. Nearly 90
percent were accepted to
either their first or second
choice school. And 146
were accepted to every
school they applied to.
The student leadership,
led by senior student
council president
and Northbrook resident
Samantha Mallahan, felt
that they were heard in
everything they wanted to
accomplish this year and
that goes back to the administration
and faculty’s
willingness to listen to
them.
“One of the biggest
things is that I think all
the adults there, they were
helpful and so supportive
and they all want to
make sure that our voice
is heard,” Mallahan said.
“We had a lot of meetings
with like the principal and
75 years after D-Day, local WWII vets discuss military service
Alan P. Henry
Freelance Reporter
Seventy five years ago
this week, on June 6, 1944,
more than 160,000 Allied
troops took part in history’s
largest amphibious
invasion, landing along a
50-mile stretch of heavily
fortified coastline in Normandy,
France to press
the fight against Nazi
Germany.
More than 5,000 ships
and 13,000 aircraft supported
the D-Day invasion,
and by day’s end
the launch of “Operation
Overlord” had secured a
foothold in Europe. More
than 4,000 Allied soldiers
were killed or wounded
on that day alone, but
their sacrifice made possible
the inexorable advance
of Allied forces
across Europe to crush the
German army.
The American fighting
forces that defeated tyranny
across the globe during
WWII are now at least
in their 90s. According to
the U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs, roughly
400 veterans will die each
day this year, and of the
16 million Americans who
fought in World War II, an
estimated 390,000 are still
alive today.
Three of those war and
life-hardened veterans, all
now living at Covenant
Village in Northbrook,
gathered recently with The
Northbrook Tower to talk
about their service to the
nation.
As an aviation ordnanceman
(AO) in the
Navy, Ken Johnson was
skilled in the high-risk job
of handling and servicing
weapons and ammunition
carried on Navy aircraft.
Following training, he
was sent to the Naval air
station in Beaufort, South
Carolina, home to two
squadrons of Lockheed
PV-2 bombers that were
used to patrol the Atlantic
for German submarines.
There, he was part of a
five-man team that trained
new crew members.
As with many who
served in World War II,
life had not been easy during
the Depression but
they’d made the best of it.
“It was hard to get work,
but all our neighbors were
like that, too. It was not an
affluent time to live. We
were poor but we didn’t
know it,” said Johnson, 95,
who went on to become
a tool engineer for a toy
company.
It was also a generation
that had an abiding love of
country and great sense of
patriotism.
“In school the teachers
read the Bible, we would
salute the flag, we sang
patriotic songs,” Johnson
said. “My father was in
World War I, so he used
to talk about it and he
would be in parades so
we thought a lot about our
country. We were taught to
appreciate the country that
we lived in and be thankful
for that.”
As news of the D-Day
invasion spread, there was
a renewed wave of optimism
among the troops,
Johnson recalled.
“We knew that maybe
the war could be brought
to an end and we could
be going home and being
with our families.”
Victor Osborn served in
1945 aboard a Navy cargo
ship in the South Pacific
that delivered supplies to
the Philippines.
“I really enjoyed it,” Osborn
recalled. “I liked the
neatness and the cleanliness
and the orderliness.
There were white walls every
place on the ship, and
guys walking around with
a can of cleanser and when
Northbrook World War II veterans (left to right) Victor Osborn, Ken Johnson and Aleck Johnsen pose for a photo
after discussing their service time with The Tower, 75 years after D-Day. Alan P. Henry/22nd Century Media
they saw fingerprints they
took them off the walls.
The one unpleasant thing
about it was the bell went
off so early in the morning.
About half a hour before
the sun was supposed to
come up we had to go get
on the guns.”
In hindsight, Johnson
also came to understand
“why I was so anxious to
get out. I realized that you
didn’t have any freedom to
go wherever you wanted to
go.”
Was the 92-year-old
longtime Northbrook resident
and Commonwealth
Edison lineman ever
scared?
“No,” he laughed. “I
was only 18 years old and
18 year olds don’t have a
brain in their head.”
Like most World War
II veterans, Osborn was
caught up in the patriotism
of it all, too.
“Everybody wanted to
go into the service and
serve,” he said. I didn’t
know one guy I went to
school with who wasn’t
looking forward to the day
that it would be time for
him to go. We were all really
into it. We had some
really terrible foes.”
In turn, it was also
a time when the civilian
population returned
that service with respect
and admiration, Osborn
said.
“I remember when I was
discharged and I was riding
the train home on the
electric North Shore line,
people wanted to get up
and give me their seat,” he
said. “It was nothing like
the poor guys who came
home from Vietnam. It
was terrible the way they
were treated when they
came come. It wasn’t their
idea to be there but they
did the job that had to be
done. There wasn’t that
kind of reception for the
guys who fought in Korea
either. My next younger
brother, he went through
hell in Korea.”
Aleck Johnsen was expecting
a grand adventure
when he signed up for the
Air Corps in 1943.
“I never thought of any
danger,” he said. “I was
going to be a pilot and go
over to Germany and drop
bombs. And I was never
going to get shot down.”
Over many months
of training, the 94-yearold
Rockford native and
retired grocery chain office
manager shuttled around
between Missouri, Texas,
Illinois, Arizona and
California.
“It was always delay,
delay, delay. We were
all eager to advance, but
we never got advanced
training,” he said. “Then
they dropped the bomb
on Hiroshima and they
discharged me.”
For his brother-in-law,
96-year-old Bill Heer,
it was a different story.
Heer fought door to door
in the Battle of Bulge,
and had gruesome tales to
tell when it was all over,
Johnsen said.
“War is so sad,” Johnsen
said. “They are young, and
they are shooting at us, and
we are young and we shoot
them. It is so stupid.”

all of the other people
who want to come at the
school, and they wanted
so, what we wanted and
what we thought needs
to be changed and what
would be better for the
school, and we basically
get freedom to kind of
share our ideas and hear
our feedback, and they’re
very accepting of what we
have to say, and I think
them being so encouraging
of us taking the bigger
role really helped.”
Hickey summed it up
well in her valedictorian
speech.
“Deliberate and purposeful
acts, regardless
of size, define who we are
as a community and allow
us to overcome challenges.
As a class, we
have supported each other
through difficult times;
we have motivated each
other through small acts
of kindness and love. It is
in these moments where
we find God’s grace, and,
more importantly, where
we realize each of us has
the power to become an
instrument of God’s grace.
While these small examples
may seem insignificant
in the grand
scheme of things, they
are rooted in the relationships
we form. Friendship
remains proof of
God’s grace, and these
small moments: actions,
deeds, gestures ... they
transform the ordinary
into extraordinary.”
Staying healthy is a
challenge we all face. Increased
workloads and
family responsibilities are
factors for many as Americans
too often put their
own personal wellness on
the back burner.
For those looking
for ideas and information
on how to improve
their health, the inaugural
Healthy Living Expo
promises to provide the
perfect setting to meet all
your wellness needs. Dozens
of health and wellness
vendors will be part of
this exciting new health
fair Sunday, Aug. 25, at
Northbrook Court, 1515
Lake Cook Road.
THE WILMETTE BEACON
Wilmette’s Herguth carved
own niche during storied
journalism career
A golden era of Chicago
newspaper journalism
can arguably be said
to have occurred from the
mid-1950s into the 1980s,
when the internet began to
undermine the printed daily
newspaper business model.
Armed with a combination
of grand wordsmiths,
street-smart columnists,
relentless investigators,
old pros who could rewrite
Bible chapters in an hour if
asked, the occasional scallywag,
and lots of shoe
leather, the Chicago Sun-
Times, Chicago Tribune,
Chicago Today and Chicago
Daily News slugged it
out day by day, deadline by
deadline, to beat the competition,
and in the process
grab readers’ attention.
“We have done this
event the past three years
in our Southwest suburban
area and have had really
great success,” said
Heather Warthen, chief
events officer of organizer
22nd Century Media, publisher
of The Northbrook
Tower. “We were looking
to bring a new event
that was health-focused to
the North Shore so it just
made sense.”
For those so inclined, a
chance to run a 5K is also
in the mix Aug. 25. The
5K and expo begin at 8:30
a.m. with the latter running
until 1 p.m. In addition
to the 5K, there will
be a Kids 50-Yard Dash.
Walkers are also encouraged
to take part in the
festivities.
In the midst of that colorful
journalistic maelstrom
stood Bob Herguth,
who during his tenure at
the Chicago Daily News
from 1955 to 1978 and the
Chicago Sun-Times from
1979 to 1999 carved out
a kinder, gentler, eternally
optimistic style and niche
uniquely his own.
A few, but not many of
the longtime Wilmette resident’s
old colleagues and
friends at the Daily News
and Sun-Times still click
the keyboard for a living.
One of them is nationally
respected Sun-Times
obituary writer Maureen
O’Donnell, who upon Herguth’s
death on May 22,
2019 at age 93 summarized
his professional life
this way.
“Chicago journalism
is famous for bulldog reporters
who rake muck for
Health and wellness
vendors will be set up
for consultation post-race
with family-friendly activities
abound. Chicago
Sky Kids Zone will have a
variety things for children
to do at the all-ages event.
“While our south event
is held in January, we
thought the end of the August
would be a perfect
time with families getting
ready for the new school
year,” Warthen said.
Registration for the 5K
is $35 and includes a race
T-shirt. Registration deadline
is Aug. 9. People can
register for the 5K by visiting
J. Herguth had a different
approach. His gentle demeanor
and lighthearted,
pun-filled way of viewing
the world made interview
subjects open up to him.”
Eataco is Northbrook’s newest restaurant
Martin Carlino, Editor
Kadir Cicek and Javier Alvarez
first conceptualized the vision
for Eataco Taco & Tequila
Bar nearly five years ago.
Now a half-decade later, the
duo, along with the rest of the
restaurant’s management team,
is putting the final touches on
Northbrook’s newest eatery.
The ownership team is hoping
to officially open its doors
in downtown Northbrook at
1350 Shermer Road this month,
pending final approval from the
Village.
Glenbrook North alumna Serah
Cicek, Kadir’s wife, and
Manny Gill join Kadir Cicek
and Alvarez to make up Eataco’s
ownership group. Each of the
four brings with them years of
experience in the restaurant
industry, something the team
feels will make Eataco a fresh,
signature dining option for the
Northbrook community.
“Our background is really
strong and we have a really
strong team,” Kadir Cicek said.
“We’ve been in the industry so
long. We’ve worked together
for so many years. Each of us
has unique experiences in the
restaurant industry to bring with
us.”
With Eataco’s opening right
around the corner, creating a
strong sense of community is
among the new Northbrook
restaurant’s top priorities.
“Our goal with Eataco is to
form a place for the community
— a place that people want to
engage with regularly” Serah
Cicek said. “People are always
looking for warm, welcoming
and social atmospheres with
good, quality food. And we
want to give them just that.”
Each owner emphasized the
importance of crafting an interior
design that’s welcoming
and one that gives diners a
chance to enjoy more than just
the restaurant’s food. The walls
inside the space are painted with
bright colors and feature artistic
works.
Kadir said the space’s current
capacity is approximately 40
diners inside, with the possibility
for roughly 10-15 more on
an outdoor patio.
The owners described the restaurant’s
concept as “sit-down
casual” and the initial plan is for
Eataco’s hours to be 11 a.m.-10
p.m. but Kadir said those may
change “depending on what’s in
demand.”
From Page 27
Eataco’s menu was crafted
by Alvarez, who’s spent
years working in fine-dining
establishments in New
York City and Chicago.
“Javier is the main guy
who created this menu
... this is his spotlight,”
Serah said.
Serah described the
menu as “fusion between
authentic Mexican, modern
American and Tex-
Mex.” She mentioned
homemade tortilla tacos,
bowls, tostadas, and quesadillas
as some of the
items the menu will include.
Alvarez, a native of Nicaragua,
said he hopes to
alter the menu seasonally
to deliver the best-possible
arrangement of flavors
to guests.
WE’RE OVERTHE TOP
Eataco will also feature
an alcohol menu
5B2F Akira Sushi comes ‘home’ to Wilmette
Alyssa Groh
Contributing Editor
After closing 153 Akira
Sushi in Wilmette and taking
some time off, it brings
tears to Kelly Yang’s eyes
to have a restaurant in
Wilmette again.
5B2F Akira Sushi
opened under a new name
and new location, but has
the same original owner as
153 Akira Sushi.
153 Akira Sushi was
owned by Yang, who
eventually sold it to a new
owner. Shortly after, due
to lease negotiations, 153
Akira had to close down.
After taking approximately
a year and a half
off and spending time
with her young daughters,
Yang found a new location
in Wilmette for another
restaurant.
5B2F Akira Sushi, 143
Skokie Blvd., Wilmette,
officially opened on April
30.
Yang said she was waiting
to find a location in
Wilmette because it is
where she calls home.
“We really missed Wilmette
and we really missed
our customers,” said Yang,
who is a Wilmette resident.
While this restaurant
is a bit different than 153
Akira Sushi, it still offers
Japanese dishes.
Seeing residents return
to her restaurant with excitement
to learn she was
5B2F Akira Sushi
143 Skokie Blvd.,
Wilmette
(847) 920-5332
11 a.m.-8 p.m.
Monday-Saturday
Closed Sunday
back made it all worth it
for Yang.
“This is a community, it
moves my heart to see old
customers come back that
are happy to see us,” she
said.
For Yang, her customers
are more than customers
— they are family and
friends.
Back at 153 Akira Sushi,
Yang said she and her
customers would tell each
other about their lives and
be supportive when times
were rough, while also celebrating
accomplishments.
“Our customer relationships
are very important
to us,” Yang said. “I want
to rebuild the relationship
with new and old customers
in a different location
with a new concept. This
location is a restart for us.”
One of the biggest
changes between the two
restaurants, is the new location
is much smaller than
the old one. 5B2F Akira
Sushi has small window
and bar seating, and is not a
full-service restaurant.
And while there are
items on the menu at 5B2F
Akira Sushi that weren’t
The Menage a Trois ($14) has tempura unagi, cucumber,
avocado, tuna and sweet tuna topped with salmon and
drizzled with sauces.
on the menu at 153 Akira
Sushi, guests can expect
the same type of cuisine
and quality.
5B2F Akira Sushi may
be in a much smaller location,
but its menu is far
from small.
The menu contains hot
and cold appetizers, salads,
poke bowls, homemade
ramen, 24 specialty
rolls, 14 classic rolls, nine
vegetable rolls and more.
A team of 22nd Century
Media editors stopped
into 5B2F Akira Sushi to
see what all the hype was
about.
We started with a hot
and a cold appetizer. First
up was the asparagus beef
roll ($9.50), made with
sliced beef, which was
rolled around asparagus
and broiled in a teriyaki
sauce.
We also tried two items
from the cold appetizers,
the hamachi ponzu ($12)
and tuna tartare ($12). The
hamachi ponzue is very
thinly sliced yellowtail
topped with jalapeno and
Akira’s special sauce.
One of our favorite
items was the tuna tartare,
which is also a trademark
of 5B2F Akira Sushi. This
appetizer consists of towers
of tuna accompanied
with crispy wontons. Yang
mixed it all up for us and
placed it on top of the
wonton chips, which was
similar to chips and dip.
Known for its sushi, we
couldn’t wait to dive into
a specialty roll, the menage
a trois ($14). This
roll is considered a spicy
roll. The menage a trois is
made with tempura unagi,
cucumber, avocado with
tuna and sweet tuna topped
with salmon and sauces.
The Kelly Poke Bowl ($13) has avocado, cilantro,
cucumber, edamame, scallions, onion crunch, tobiko
and jalapeño on a bed of rice, topped with spicy mayo
and ponzu sauce at 5B2F Akira Sushi in Wilmette.
Photos by Anna Schultz/22nd Century Media
Spicy tuna seaweed salad ($12) lays on a bed of crisp
lettuce topped with spicy tuna and seaweed.
We also had the opportunity
to try one of the
restaurant’s newest items,
the Kelly poke bowl ($13),
made with a combination
of avocado, cilantro, cucumber,
edamame, scallions,
onion crunch, tobiko,
jalapeno, spicy mayo
and ponzu sauce. This
poke bowl is filled with
flavor and large enough to
have as an entree.
We ended our tasting
with a spicy tuna seaweed
salad ($12) and the Akira
Ramen ($14), made with
pork and chicken broth
with pork chashu, bamboo,
bean sprouts, bok choy,
green onion, kama gobo
and boiled egg.
Fourth Quarter
The three announce the
Coach and Player of the
Year.
with Reid Milkens
Milkens scored the gamewinning
goal against Lake
Forest for the Glenbrook
North boys lacrosse team.
When and why did
you start playing
lacrosse?
Before high school in
about fourth grade, I played
in two seasons of park district
recreation league and
then I stopped playing so
I could focus on basketball
but then I picked it up my
freshman year.
What do you like most
about the sport?
Throughout Glenbrook
North, definitely the
coaches. Justin Georgacakis
one of the best coaches
I’ve ever played for in any
sport and he has a great
culture in the program.
Do you have any
superstitions before a
match?
I always shower and
shave right before a game.
What is your favorite
sports moment?
It’s got to be against
Lake Forest this postseason,
taking the game into
overtime and then having
the game winner.
What is one thing
people don’t know
about you?
People don’t know that
I’m really into space.
What would you do if
you won the lottery?
I would first call up a
financial advisor and then
I would do some special
things for my parents, like
getting a house or car.
If you could be any
superhero, which
super power would
you want?
I would want to be Iron
Man. I think Tony Stark is
awesome. He has the brains,
he has the money and he’s
the best Avenger there is.
If you could play any
other sport, which
would it be?
I would play basketball. I
played basketball for most
of my life and then stopped
after my freshman year.
What is one thing on
your bucket list?
I want to go to Bora
Bora one day.
If you could be any
animal, which would
you be?
I would be a lion because
I think they’re beautiful
animals and they’re
also crazy fast and strong,
the kings of the jungle.
Girls soccer Coach of the Year
Burnside’s consistency helps him earn honor
Michael Wojtychiw
Contributing Sports Editor
It’d be fair to make the
argument that New Trier’s
Jim Burnside is one of the,
if not the, greatest girls
soccer coaches in IHSA
girls soccer history.
His 529 career victories
are rivaled by only Quincy
Notre Dame’s Mark Longo
and his six career state
titles are the most by any
coach in state history.
This year, Burnside led
his squad to an unprecedented
sixth consecutive
Girls Soccer Player of the Year
trip downstate and for that,
he was named 22nd Century
Media’s Coach of the
Year.
With the amount of soccer
talent in the state, it’s
difficult to have a team
make it to the state’s final
four once, much less
six consecutive times and
13 times overall. So how
does New Trier continually
make the annual trip
to Naperville?
“The kids constantly
buy into the idea of working
hard, doing the little
things, and playing as a
team,” Burnside said. “Our
kids are willing to buy into
what we’re asking them to
do, and are also having fun
at the same time.
“This time is remarkable
to me. We have zero
seniors going on to play
college soccer at any level.
That doesn’t really matter,
but a lot of people gauge
how good somebody’s going
to be, who do you have
as a Division-I recruit,
who’s signed, who’s this.”
Weaver’s progression helps Trevians grow
Michael Wojtychiw
Contributing Sports Editor
Emma Weaver could
have chosen to play for a
developmental academy
like many in the area do.
Instead the junior chose
to play for her high school,
New Trier, and has flourished
since the day she
stepped on the field as a
freshman on the varsity
squad.
“I knew when I got offered
to go back to Academy,
I knew the day I got
offered, that I didn’t want
to accept it because at
NTGS (New Trier girls
soccer), it’s family to
me,” she said. “I felt like
if it didn’t do, if I did accept
the Academy thing, I
would regret it. That was
my biggest fear.
“And I didn’t want to
live in regret, going to the
games and being ‘Oh I
wish I was out there, I wish
I was playing.’ I didn’t
want to let my teammates
and my coaches down
and I think that says a lot
about the program and the
individual players because
that’s what kind of struck
through me towards high
school because Academy,
yeah competitive, and better
games but it’s the fun
part that what motivates
me and I feel like it motivates
me in the off season
because I work harder because
I have something to
look forward to.”
After scoring 31 goals,
she was named 22nd Century
Media’s 2019 Girls
Soccer Player of the Year.
The Trevians lost three
players who combined to
score over 40 goals, coaches
looked upon Weaver to
become more of a scoring
threat.
And not only did she,
she embraced it in stride.
“Nicole Kaspi was one
of a kind, like Sydney
(Parker), Whitney (Hoban),
all those players
were people that I looked
up to, so I needed to fill
that role even as a passer,
which is also as a leader on
the team,” she said. “Everyone
is stepping up, the
freshman, the sophomores,
the juniors, everyone’s filling
roles which has made
it easy because of the loss
of players we’ve had.
“I think we had such
high expectations and being
part of varsity New
Trier, that’s a pressure actually
served as motivation
for me at least. Because
I want to prove people
wrong when they say
‘you’re not as good this
year, you lost these players.’
It’s like, no, you recreate
a team that’s amazing
every year. That’s just
what (coach Jim) Burnside
does.”
Weaver, who had primarily
played the midfield
position previously, was
thrust into the forward
role.
Kipnis hopes new facility
will inspire young players
Martin Carlino, Editor
Jason Kipnis wants every
young Northbrook baseball
player to have the same opportunity
he once had.
The two-time Major
League Baseball all-star
believes Northbrook Baseball,
along with his time at
Glenbrook North, gave him
everything he ever needed
to be successful.
Playing games at Village
Green Park and lacing
up his cleats for Fourth of
July tournaments at Techny
still remain among his most
beloved memories with the
game of baseball.
The timeless traditions of
Northbrook Baseball will
forever be ingrained in his
mind and he hopes to keep
them alive for generations
to come.
To ensure the program’s
rich heritage never fades,
Northbrook’s youth baseball
players now have a
new place to play the game
they love.
Kipnis returned to his
hometown Saturday, June
1, to celebrate the opening
of the Northbrook Baseball
Kipnis Center — a state-ofthe-art
indoor facility that
gives Northbrook players a
dedicated year-round place
to practice.
“Northbrook Baseball
gave me everything that
I needed and as you go
through the ranks, you always
want to give back,”
Kipnis said. “Northbrook
Baseball, along with Glenbrook
North, meant everything
to me in my baseball
career.”
Dozens of Northbrook
residents packed the facility,
located at 1851 Janke
Drive, for a ribbon-cutting
space. The facility’s opening
comes less than one
month after Northbrook
Baseball announced its creation
via press release.
The Northbrook Baseball
Kipnis Center was made
possible thanks to a donation
from Kipnis, a recently
launched capital campaign
from Northbrook Baseball,
as well as countless hours
of hard work from the program’s
board of directors.
“This is a day I don’t
think Northbrook Baseball
ever expected, and it’s
due to the extremely hardworking
board,” Mark Gerstein,
Northbrook Baseball
director and league commissioner
said.
Gerstein thanked Lucas
Buti and Ira Mirochnick for
their dedicated work on the
facility’s interior prior to its
opening. He also thanked
the entire Kipnis family
for its unwavering support
of Northbrook Baseball
“since its infancy.”
While speaking to those
in attendance, Kipnis said
he wants baseball to stick
around for a long time in
Northbrook.
Kipnis also mentioned
he believes the facility will
serve as a great opportunity
for youth players and members
of the GBN baseball
team to develop and refine
their skills.
The GBN alumnus hopes
to make it out to the facility
several times during the
offseason to work with,
help coach and offer hitting
lessons to current Spartans.
Kipnis’ nine-year majorleague
career is filled with
accolades, but the opportunity
to give back to his
community is his most
valuable takeaway.
“I just want baseball to
keep going in Northbrook,”
he said. “I want kids to
have every opportunity
to play this game that has
given so much to me so
hopefully they can experience
the lives that I’ve got
to live.”

Glenbrook North made
a memorable playoff run
this year, winning a sectional
title before a onegoal
loss in the super-sectional
ended the Spartans’
season.
“It was a huge accomplishment
for GBN lacrosse,”
senior David Wilcox
said. “There’s been
a drought period when
GBN hasn’t been considered
one of the top teams
in the state and I think
this playoff push was a
wakeup call for the rest of
the state, to give us more
respect.”
Seeded third behind
No. 1 Lake Forest and No.
2 St. Viator at this year’s
Lake Forest Sectional, the
Spartans upset both teams
before losing 5-4 to Warren
in a super-sectional
game on May 28.
The Spartans won 8-6
over St. Viator and 12-
11 over Lake Forest to
reach the state’s Elite
Eight.
“It was a really good
group to coach and a really
good team,” Spartans
coach Justin Georgacakis
said. “It was just a good,
hard-nosed team and I had
a lot of fun with them.
“It was a good group of
seniors and we’ll return
a good amount of guys.
The seniors talked about
building a foundation and
that’s what they did.”
Playing without key attacking
player Jake Sorkin,
who suffered a season-ending
injury in the
win over Lake Forest, the
Spartans (14-10) struggled
to find an offensive
push in the first half.
After a scoreless first
quarter, Warren (21-3)
scored four goals in the
second and led 4-1 at halftime.
Sophomore Jack
Hardesty scored North’s
lone first-half goal.
The Spartans’ offense
has been shining down
the season’s stretch but
adjusting without Sorkin
proved difficult.
“We were trying to rally
and play for (Sorkin) in
this game, but he’s such a
focal point in our offense
that it was tough to get going
without him,” Wilcox
said. “It took us a while to
figure out how to run our
offense without him.”
A goal by junior Reid
Milkens cut Warren’s lead
to 4-2 in the third quarter
but Warren went up 5-2
in the quarter on the only
goal North gave up in the
second half.
With less than five
minutes remaining in
the game, senior Connor
Doughty buried a longrange
shot to make it 5-3,
and senior Brennan Nein
scored quickly thereafter
to bring North within one
goal of Warren with four
minutes remaining.
A final attacking push in
the game’s final seconds
saw a shot get behind Warren’s
goalie and seemingly
trickle over the goal line.
Spartans at the net began
celebrating but the official
never made the goal
call and the final buzzer
sounded.
“It’s hard to call that
back when three kids on
our team right at the goal
all jump up in celebration,”
Wilcox said. “They
wouldn’t do that if they
saw the ball get saved.”
Georgacakis quickly
dismissed the game’s final
play.
“That’s the way it goes.
We had opportunities earlier
and later,” he said.
“The bottom line is, we
made too many mistakes
at the beginning of the
game and we gave up that
one bad goal in the third
quarter.
“We started off a little
slow with some bad decisions.
But we played hard
and fought through to the
end, and all you can ask
for is a chance to tie it up
and they created that. We
finished the game a lot better
than we started.”
North will lose 12 seniors
from this year’s team
and the departing Wilcox
hopes the Spartans’
2019 playoff run will pay
dividends for the program
moving forward.
“We sort of anticipated
being another .500 GBN
team but we picked up fuel
and gelled late as a family,”
Wilcox said. “I think
that was the biggest factor.
“The win over St. Viator
was a huge stepping stone
for whole GBN program.
Now it gives us hope that
we can hang with these top
dogs.”
