Association
to Continuous Improvement
In addition to growing a healthy food that people love, the California almond community is dedicated to producing an
economically, environmentally and socially responsible crop for California. Recognizing our local role in
California agriculture and global role as a powerhouse in almond production, we're working to
grow almonds in better, safer and healthier ways, protecting our communities and the environment.
The Almond Orchard 2025 Goals are the latest way the California almond
community is committed to continuous improvement.
FURTHER REDUCING THE WATER USED TO GROW ALMONDS
Over the past two decades, almond farmers have successfully reduced the amount of water needed to grow a pound
of almonds by 33% via improved production practices and adoption of efficient microirrigation technology. 1 By 2025, the
California almond community commits to reduce the amount of water used to grow a pound of almonds by an additional 20%.
INCREASING ADOPTION OF ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PEST MANAGEMENT TOOLS
Responsible almond farming requires protecting the crop and trees from bugs, weeds and disease through an integrated
pest management approach. This means using tools and techniques like beneficial insects, habitat removal, mating
disruption and, when necessary, pesticides. To further protect our orchards, employees and communities, by 2025, we
commit to increase adoption of environmentally friendly pest management tools by 25%.
ACHIEVING ZERO WASTE IN OUR ORCHARDS
Almonds grow in a shell, protected by a hull, on a tree: products traditionally used for livestock bedding, dairy feed
and electricity generation. Changing markets for these coproducts are spurring innovation for higher value uses, both
economically and environmentally, with promising leads in the areas of recycled plastics, fuel, beer and more. By 2025,
the California almond community commits to achieve zero waste in our orchards by putting everything we grow to optimal use.
IMPROVING LOCAL AIR QUALITY DURING ALMOND HARVEST
California almonds are harvested by shaking the nuts to the ground where they dry naturally in
the sun before being swept up and collected, a process that can create dust in our local communities. To address
this nuisance, the almond community is taking short- and long-term steps to reimagine how we
harvest and, by 2025, commits to reduce dust during harvest by 50%.
Norman and Mark Crow are fifth and sixth
generation farmers whos pioneering
family came to California in 1849 from
Missouri in search of lush, fertile soil to
farm. The family settled near Orestimba
Creek and the San Joaquin River where
the Crows grew wheat and barley and
installed a ferry landing in what is known
as Crows Landing.
In 1865 the Crows planted walnut trees
from seeds they brought with them from
Missouri.
Benefits of Quality Plus
Orestimba Nursery has over 50 years of
experience in growing walnuts.
Orestimba Quality Plus Nursery soil has never
had a commercial orchard grown on it.
Orestimba only uses it's nursery site once and
then moves on to new virgin soil.
We believe in helping other growers. That's
why we'll help in planning, planting, and
advancement of your walnut orchard.
PEST CONTROL
YOUR BOTRYOSPHAERIA CALENDAR
brought to you by -
ALMONDS - Band Canker: Because of growth cracks and pruning
wounds young almonds up to six years old are most susceptible to
infections of Botryosphaeria, especially during periods of rainfall/
wetness. To prevent and reduce Band Canker it is highly recommended
to utilize an aggressive prophylactic treatment program.
K-PHITE 7LP can be applied either as a foliar or chemigation every two
months at an economical rate of 1 quart/acre for 1-2 year old trees,
and 2 quarts/acre for older trees.
PISTACHIOS - Panicle and Shoot Blight:
Standard calendar applications either foliar or
through chemigation (4x) mid-April (bloom),
mid-May, mid-June, mid-July.
K-PHITE 7LP should be applied at a rate of 2-3 quarts/acre, using higher rates for chemigation and larger
trees. Because neither Botryosphaeria or K-PHITE 7LP have ever exhibited resistance you may use
repeated treatments as a stand alone product while realizing a substantial cost savings. K-PHITE 7LP has
also been proven to be highly effective on Alternaria applied either foliar or through the soil. Additional
uses include control of Phytopthora, Pythium, and Phytopythium helicodes .
WALNUTS - Botryosphaeria and Phomopsis Cankers: Standard calendar sprays (3x)mid-May,
mid-June, mid-July. Considering lower prices for walnuts if budgets are limited to only one spray, the
latter half of June is recommended.
K-PHITE 7LP is a highly effective, low cost fungicide/bactericide that is also registered for Xanthomonas
(Walnut Blight) as well as Phytophthora Root and Crown Rot. Use at a rate of 3 quarts/acre.
K-PHITE 7LP—RATED FOUR STARS **** FOR BOTRYOSPHAERIA
Apply either foliar or through soil
PEST CONTROL
1-855-924-3282 | semios.com
Semios provides growers of tree fruit and tree nut crops with a powerful, in-orchard surveillance and
decision-aid system. Through real-time detection and improved timing of treatments, we help reduce
the risk of common crop challenges.
Our solution includes:
Networked, remote-controlled system of
camera traps and pheromone dispensers for
variable rate mating disruption that reduces
populations and damage associated with
pests like Navel orangeworm, Codling moth,
Leaf roller and California Red Scale.
Soil moisture monitors to
deliver precise soil conditions
for irrigation management.
In-orchard weather and leaf wetness
sensors tracking in-canopy conditions
to predict and alert for specific disease
risk conditions and help improve spray
application timing.
Easy to use dashboard
accessible via smartphone,
tablet or desktop.
What do we do?
We install and maintain a cost-effective,
reliable wireless network in your
orchard that connects our weather
stations, camera traps, pheromone
dispensers, soil moisture probes and
other important sensors. We provide
you with a 24/7 window on in-field
conditions that can affect crop output.
How can we help you?
Our network of sensors throughout your crop
feeds our cloud-based analytics system that
predicts important events like insect pest
flight timing or disease outbreaks. The future
of agriculture includes applying big data
analytics and machine learning to reduce and
Calcium
At Your Service
Apply CaTs ® during the growing season for improved water infiltration
and soil structure. CaTs works by displacing sodium to flocculate soil
colloids resulting in increased water movement through the soil.
The 100% soluble calcium and sulfur works immediately in the soil. The
thiosulfate sulfur reacts in the soil to release additional calcium. CaTs
convenient liquid formulation allows for easy application with irrigation.
Crop Vitality Specialists can provide assistance regarding application,
blending, field studies and technical data.
PEST CONTROL
Enhanced Codling Moth Larval Control!
Mating disruption product for conventional and organic California walnuts!!
DECREASE DAMAGE
40% Average Reduction Compared to Insecticide Alone *
Available in 10, 20 and
40 acre container sizes!
MICRO-ENCAPSULATED
SPRAYABLE!
“
CIDETRAK DA MEC will provide a higher level
of insecticide efficacy in killing hatched larval
worms and protecting the walnut set that
the grower currently sees and counts on by
targeting the Codling Moth 1B, 2nd and 3rd
flights, with the added benefit of decreasing
damaged-nut sites for NOW to later infest.
~ Dr. Douglas Light, USDA-ARS, Emeritus
“
CIDETRAK ® DA MEC contains a novel, patented kairomone in a micro-encapsulated liquid formulation that influences the
behavior of adult and larval Codling Moth, resulting in significant enhancement of the control of Codling Moth larvae when
tank mixed with various insecticides. Additionally, Codling Moth adult control is significantly enhanced when mixed indirectly with
airborne Codling Moth pheromone applied as a mating disruption treatment.
• What it does: Disrupts oviposition. Changes larval behavior:
Stops/delays locating walnut; stops/delays walnut entry and reduces damage.
• How to use it: Simply tank mix with each insecticide application.
• Longevity: More than 14 days following application.
PEST CONTROL
The best way to manage pathogens before they become an issue.
TriClor is chloropicrin based and can be used as a standalone or as a complement
to Telone® depending on your orchard redevelopment needs.
When targeting soil borne disease and nematodes, TriClor and Telone®
can be applied in a single pass. This reduces application costs, promotes
early root development, and improves soil health. For more information
