Charles Town Maroon International Conference Magazine June 2018 Conference Organizing Committee (From left to right) Richard Lumsden Mr. Richard Lumsden is an Economist and Planner who has held management positions at the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) and the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM). He is a former Corporate Planner at JAMPRO and has many years experience in Business Consulting. Mr. Lumsden is a former Jamaica Scholar, a graduate with a B.A. degree in Economics and Political Science from Yale University, USA, and an MBA in Finance from the Manchester Business School in the UK. Dianne McIntosh Dianne McIntosh is Special Educator, Sociologist, Community Development Expert and Practitioner. She has served in the United Nations and the Government of Jamaica specializing in the area of Public Finance Management reforms and marginalized and vulnerable populations. Her focus is on economic empowerment, particularly of women and children in the development of their local economy and community. Evan Williams Principal/Architect/Designer/Planner, Jamaican born, British educated, and American trained, Mr. Williams has established an international network of professional and personal relationships, not only in the field of Architecture, Art, and Design, but also in Entertainment and Tourism. Dr. Frances Botkin Frances Botkin is a professor of English at Towson University, where she teaches British Romanticism, Caribbean literature, transatlantic studies, and gender studies. She has published articles on Maria Edgeworth, William Wordsworth, Sydney Owenson, and Jack Mansong. Though she lives primarily in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Botkin spends several months of the year in Jamaica where she helps to organize the Charles Town International Maroon Conference. Dr. Botkin’s book Thieving Three-fingered Jack: Transatlantic Tales of a Jamaican Outlaw, 1780-2015 came out in 2018 with Rutgers University Press. Dr. Paul Youngquist Paul Youngquist is a professor of English in at the University of Colorado -Boulder. His areas of specialization include British Romanticism, Atlantic Studies, science fiction, literary and cultural theory. Flavius Laidley Systems Analyst, Events Planner, Tourism specialist and Webmaster. Flavius has spent over 35 years designing Systems for large, medium, and small businesses in the areas of Banking, Credit Management, Retail, Accounting, Library, Law, Inventory Control and Management, and Corporate Web Presence. He has been involved in Tourism, Events creation, planning, management, marketing and implementation since the early 1970’s in Jamaica, Canada, United Kingdom and the wider Caribbean. Michael Lumsden Michael Lumsden is a principal of Belcour Preserves Ltd., a gourmet food company located in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. He is a former President of the Jamaica Exporters’ Association and a former Export Manager for Desnoes and Geddes Ltd. He has served as an advisor to the CTMC since 2003. Marcia “Kim” Douglas Acting Colonel Marcia “Kim” Douglas is an herbalist extraordinaire, making wines, teas, medicines and rubs from native herbs, plants and fruits, knowledge she acquired from her parents. She believes that every plant has its own use and is to be analyzed individually. She says that each plant and herb must be used correctly in order to achieve maximum benefit. Carol Miller Carol Miller (Okomfo Afua Fofie) is the founding Director of Sankofie an organization which helps Jamaicans reclaim and reconnect with the traditions and ways of life of the wise, old ones. Sankofie fosters awareness, understanding, and adoption of the spiritual practices of our Taíno, Akan, Yoruba and Congolese ancestors. Marcus Goffe Dr. Marcus Goffe is an Attorney-at-Law who specializes in intellectual property law and the protection of traditional knowledge, traditional cultural expressions and the rights of indigenous and local communities. He is regularly consulted by the Maroon communities in Jamaica and is committed to supporting their sustainable development. 6
