Relay for Life honors
fight against cancer
Mary Compton
Freelance Reporter
It takes a community to
beat cancer. Just ask the
hundreds of people who
participated in the Relay
For Life of Greater Will
County.
On Saturday, June
8, participants walked
around the Lincoln-Way
North football field in honor
of loved ones no longer
here — and for those who
are in the biggest battle of
their lives.
“Today has been magical,”
said Heidi Gonzalez,
senior community development
manager for the
American Cancer Society.
“Last year, we combined
Frankfort, Mokena, Manhattan.
Crete, Monee,
Beecher and Peotone. We
are greater Will County.
They’ve been doing this
for about 17 years.
According to the American
Cancer Society website,
in 2019, there will
be more than 68,000 new
cases of selected cancers
in Illinois.
“Today we are honoring
over 60 survivors that are
here,” Gonzalez said.
The day included events
such as the survivors’ celebration,
Bake Walk, a giant
Twister game, musical
chairs and more.
“We need to celebrate
survivorship, which is
well on the rise,” Gonzalez
said. “There are more
people surviving cancer
because of the research,
because of the options. We
also know some people are
not going to make it. We
need to remember them
John Biske, of Crystal Lake, runs a mile for every
year Frankfort resident DeAnn Anzaldi beat cancer on
Saturday, June 8, at the Relay For Life of Greater Will
County held at the Lincoln-Way North football field.
Mary Compton/22nd Century Media
and continue the fight.”
The Relay for Life is the
American Cancer’s Society’s
signature fundraiser.
At this Relay for Life, 18
teams raised funds. The
top team, Rebels With
A Cause, raised almost
$8,000.
Residents in local communities
that have been
diagnosed with cancer can
seek various free services
through the American
Cancer Society office located
at 17060 Oak Park
Avenue in Tinley Park.
“We will raise about
$65,000 dollars here today,”
Gonzalez said. “Every
dollar counts. Because
of that, we get to keep up
this fight. We can fund
more research, we can
provide more wigs, we
can house people in our
Hope lodges. We also have
make-up programs for ladies
that have lost all of
their hair. A lot of people
don’t know what we can
do at no charge to the patient.
We even have volunteers
that take them to and
from treatment.”
Because of services like
these, survivors have had
community members stand
with them as they battle
the war on cancer. One of
those survivors is DeAnn
Anzaldi, of Frankfort. She
received so much support
that she is now the event
chair and has volunteered
for the American Cancer
Society since 2003.
“I was 35, when I went
for my first mammogram,”
Anzaldi said. “There is no
history of breast cancer
in my family. They saw a
spot and [I] had cancer ...
On my 36th birthday, I had
my first chemo treatment.”
She offered words of
encouragement to those
walking around the track
during the relay.
“If you’re going through
this now, find other people
that have been there and
done that,” she said. “You
are not alone. This is not
always a death sentence.
Do You Know What
You’re Paying in Fees?
In today’s investment marketplace returns are important; however,
keeping client portfolio costs as low as possible is just as important
because as the years pass those fees add up and can impact returns.
Many investors do not understand some of the hidden costs built
into their investment holdings, how to identity them or how to
reduce them in order to help get better long-term results without
sacrificing service and quality.
As an independent advisor for over 30 years, reviewing individual
portfolios for cost savings is one of the first steps we take in designing
portfolios for our clients at LaSalle St. Securities. If your portfolio is
holding stocks, mutual funds, bonds, annuities, managed money etc.
let us perform a complementary review with our investment tools,
to see if we can help because fees do matter.
Our Frankfort team of 10 experienced professional financial
advisors have:
Two suspects sought in
alleged Frankfort robbery
Bill Jones, Managing Editor
Two men police say
were in their early 60s allegedly
robbed a Frankfort
Township gas station
of cash and cigarettes the
early morning of June 4.
Police were called at
3:12 a.m. to the Speedway
at 7218 W. Lincoln
Highway in response to
the robbery, according to
a press release issued by
the Will County Sheriff’s
Office.
A store clerk told deputies
she observed two
men enter the store. One
of the men — described
as black, wearing a black
hat, black coat, jeans and
a button-up denim shirt —
began walking around the
store, according to police.
The other — described
an alleged robbery that
took place June 4 at
the Speedway at 7218
The man walking
around the store went to
the counter to purchase
cigars, and the other man
moved behind the counter
and placed a screwdriver
at the back of the employee,
police said. The men
told the clerk to lay on the
floor, and they robbed the
store of $585 in cash and
40 packs of cigarettes valued
at $315.60, according
to Deputy Chief Dan
Jungles.
The employee was then
ordered to the rear of the
store, and the two men left
in a white SUV, possibly a
Cadillac Escalade, police
said. They fled eastbound
on Lincoln Highway, according
to Will County
Sheriff’s Police spokesperson
Kathy Hoffmeyer.
The employee reportedly
was not injured.
Video surveillance is being
Man charged after allegedly attacking
woman on Old Plank Road Trail
Nuria Mathog, Editor
A New Lenox man was
arrested after reportedly
attacking a woman Sunday,
July 9, on the Old
Plank Road Trail, according
to the Frankfort Police
Department.
Anthony M. Carbone,
18, of the 800 block of
Spinnaker Drive in New
Lenox, was charged with
aggravated battery and
taken to the Will County
Jail.
Frankfort Deputy Police
Chief Kevin Keegan said
the woman was walking
eastbound on the trail near
Elsner Road around 7 a.m.
when she was struck from
behind. The force knocked
her to the ground, causing
abrasions to her shins and
knees, police said.
The woman asked the
man what he was doing,
and he reportedly ran from
the scene. The woman
provided a description of
the man to an officer at
the scene, and another officer
located an individual
matching that description,
later identified as Carbone,
near Old Plank Road Trail
and Wolf Road.
The woman identified
Carbone as her attacker,
police said.
Keegan said police
learned during an investigation
that the attack was
sexually motivated, but
the man became startled
and fled from the scene after
knocking the woman to
the ground.
Summit Hill D161
Committee recommends
K-12 district study go forward
T.J. Kremer III
Contributing Editor
A 3-0 vote June 5 by the
committee of the Summit
Hill D161 Board of Education
to examine the feasibility
of creating a new
K-12 district resulted in an
uproarious applause from
residents of the district
who packed the boardroom
wall-to-wall.
The vote means that the
full board was expected
to take up the issue at its
Wednesday, June 12 regular
meeting.
Summit Hill D161 first
began looking at the idea
of purchasing the currently
underused Lincoln-Way
North High School building
from Lincoln-Way
Community High School
District 210 and splitting
off from the district to start
its own K-12 unit district.
Committee members laid
out the details of what the
feasibility study would include,
and all of its members
agreed that it would
be in the best interest of the
district to start the process
sooner rather than later because
the study itself would
be bear fruit to the district
regardless if that study
showed a move to expand
to a K-12 district would be
beneficial or not.
The study, if approved by
the full board as presented
by the committee, would
be conducted by District
Leadership Solutions LLC.
and would require the work
to be completed in several
phases.
The first phase would include
four parts, each with
its own price tag attached
to break down the costs for
the entirety of the study.
The first part would include
a student enrollment
study, and would examine
issues surrounding facility
usage, staffing, curriculum
offerings, State aid and facility
planning. This portion
would expect to be
completed by Sept. 30 of
this year and would cost the
district $9,250.
The second part of
phase one would examine
the overall tax impact,
and would assess issues
of debt, provide a comparison
of financial profiles
for each district, estimate
tax rates for each district,
provide five-year financial
projections and examine
fund balances. This work
would also be expected to
be completed by Sept. 30
and would have a price tag
of $10,000.
The third part would examine
the tax impact on
providing a baseline high
school experience to that
of D210, including curriculum
and extracurricular
opportunities for students.
This would be expected
to be completed by Nov. 1
and cost $10,000
The final step in phase
one would examine the final
tax impact on D161,
including the purchase of
LW North. This would also
be completed and present
along with the third part
and cost $2,000.
Public comment, which
lasted for nearly an hour,
was overwhelmingly in favor
of pursuing the study.
One commenter called the
district’s plan “visionary
thinking,” while just one
commenter said the district
should “stay in your lane”
and stick to its K-8.
Karen Miner, a nonvoting
member of the committee,
said that “it would be
financially irresponsible”
if the district did not pursue
the feasibility study,
given the potential benefits
of getting hard data on how
the district’s demographics
are trending.
relay
From Page 3
There are people out their
that have survived this. This
is why I wear my purple
shirt; it symbolizes hope.”
She began wiping away
tears as she recalled her
battle with cancer.
“I fought also because
I wanted to see my kids
graduate high school,” she
said. “Today one of my
kids is married. I got to see
all of that; I was one of the
lucky ones. Whatever I say
today, if one person will get
a mammogram, it’s so important
to get that screening
and get ahead of the game.”
On the other side of the
Lincoln-Way North football
field were five little puppies
from PAWS of Tinley Park.
“We enjoy bringing the
animals out to the community,”
Mokena resident
Kelly Doherty said. “They
came out today to provide
some comfort, some love
and some cuddles to the
people participating in the
relay. I’m also here to promote
the shelter. All the
puppies are up for adoption.”

Fire department’s first
Citizens Fire Academy set
for August
The Tinley Park Fire
Department is to host its
first Citizens Fire Academy
starting in August,
and is currently accepting
applications.
The academy will provide
participants with
hands-on experience of
what fire service is like in
Tinley Park, Deputy Chief
Dan Riordan said.
“This is the first time
that we’ve done anything
like this,” Riordan said.
“It was something that
Fire Chief [Forest] Reeder
thought would be a great
opportunity to get people,
if they live in town or work
in town, to interact with
the fire department in a different
way, and really get
some understanding of all
the things that a firefighter
would be expected to do
during their normal work
shift, and you’ll get to experience
a little bit of that
yourself.”
All of the participants
will get certified in CPR,
learn how to use an automated
external defibrillator
and a fire extinguisher
during the eight-week
course. Additionally, participants
will be involved
in training tower demonstrations
at the local training
facility, Riordan said.
The program is open to
adults ages 21 and older
who live or work in the
Village of Tinley Park.
Classes will take place
once a week for 2-3 hours
beginning Aug. 7 through
September. Applications
are due July 1, and a background
check will be completed,
according to the application
packet.
dear friends — have
fought that battle, and I
have come to appreciate
the symbolism of
the purple shirts and the
imagery of a community
coming together to support
such an important
cause.
More than anything,
offering support in a time
of great need is the most
meaningful thing we can
do. Fortunately, events
such as the Relay of Life
offer many ways to do so:
a donation to the American
Cancer Society, words
of encouragement and
a few hours spent walking
side by side with the
survivors in our lives. It’s
a simple and yet powerful
way to say, “I am here for
you.”
Cancer can be an
incredibly challenging
experience physically,
financially and emotionally,
and it is the sort
of diagnosis that often
leaves loved ones unsure
of what to say or do. But
even if we don’t always
have the perfect words,
we speak a thousand of
them with our presence.
Showing up demonstrates
to those we most care
about that they don’t have
to go through the experience
alone, that they are
loved and will always
hold an important place
in our lives.
My hope is that someday
the Relays for Life
will no longer be necessary
— and that each lap
around the track brings us
a few minutes closer to a
cure.
Joe Aurelio’s life is all
about pizza. Even his license
plate reads “PIZ-
Back in 1959, before
Joe was even born, his
father Joseph A. Aurelio
started a pizza parlor in
Homewood. Today, Joe is
the president and CEO of
Aurelio’s.
“Aurelio’s Pizza was
founded by my father,”
Aurelio said. “We were
living in Chicago Heights
at the time, and [he]
wanted to start his own
pizza place. Being from
Calabria, Italy, my father
brought the family recipes
and Italian influence.”
Today, tere are 41 Aurelio’s
locations in six
states. Because of such
growth, Aurelio’s purchased
a 10,000-squarefoot
warehouse in Mokena
roughly seven months ago.
At the warehouse, they
hand-make all the Italian
sausage fresh. They also
distribute the cheese and
other meat products from
the warehouse to all Aurelio’s
locations.
“We outgrew our former
facility” Aurelio said.
“This is a perfect location,
being so close to the
Interstate, to reach our locations.
This is a great expansion
for us. It allows us
to grow.”
Aurelio said that the site
was a former pharmaceutical
warehouse, where
it was a sterile and clean
environment, and he has
maintained an emphasis
on keeping it clean today.
“It’s a USDA-inspected
facility,” he said. “We
make 12,000 pounds of
fresh Italian sausage a
week. We use ... a very
lean product with simple
spices, with no preservatives
or fillers.”
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (177 Luther
Lane, Frankfort)
Divine Service
8 a.m. Sundays. Divine service
gets its name from the fact
that worship is most importantly
God serving us. We come at his
invitation not to do God a favor,
but to receive from Him what He
alone has to offer, after which we
respond in praise. Divine service
uses a variety of rich, beautiful,
and often ancient traditions of
the church found in the hymnal
accompanied by the organ, as
well as piano and other various
instruments on special occasions.
Sunday morning Adult Bible
Study
9:30-10:30 a.m. Sundays in
the fellowship hall. We will explore
the Gospel of Matthew
during this summer. The Gospel
of Matthew serves as the “door”
into the New Testament. Come
for refreshments and join the
discussion on subjects like parables,
discipleship, judgment day,
heaven, God’s promises, and so
much more.
10:46 Worship
10:46 a.m. Sundays. 10:46
Worship gets its name from Acts
10:46, where it mentions that
the apostles “heard the Gentiles
speaking in tongues and praising
God” – which could well describe
this time of worship where
God is present and his people
are responding. 10:46 Worship
blends the best of both ancient
tradition and modern music and
instruments recognizing the ongoing,
present-day work of the
Holy Spirit in our lives. Beginning
at 10:46 AM also suggests
a more casual worship where
you’re invited to come just as
you are.
Comedy, mystery meet in The Drama Group play
Frankfort, New
Lenox residents
star in production
Nuria Mathog, Editor
The Drama Group is
hoping to deliver a killing
performance in its latest
production — figuratively
and literally.
The Chicago Heightsbased
theater group’s
version of the “The Musical
Comedy Murders
of 1940,” written by the
American playwright John
Bishop, centers around
the members of a creative
team who gather in a mysterious
mansion for a backer’s
audition for their new
show. Several chorus girls
involved in the group’s
previous production were
killed by a figure called
the “Stage Door Slasher,”
whose reappearance in the
house sparks a comical adventure
involving scandal,
secrets and intrigue.
Performances are scheduled
for 7:30 p.m. Thursday,
June 13; Friday, June
14; and Saturday, June
15, with a matinee at 2
p.m. Saturday, June 16.
All shows will take place
at The Drama Group’s
Milord Studio Theatre,
located at 330 W. 202nd
Street in Chicago Heights.
“This show is a murder
mystery, but it’s also really
a farce, so it’s very
funny,” cast member and
Frankfort resident Jeannie
Markionni said. “There’s
lots of doors, sliding bookcases,
fireplaces that open,
murders. It’s chaos. And
not everybody is who you
think they are ... Everybody’s
a bit of a caricature
of what those characters
back then would have
been.”
Markionni and her husband,
Nick Markionni,
rarely have the opportunity
to share the stage, but the
two Drama Group members
both star in the production.
Jeannie plays the
“very much over the top”
producer Marjorie Baverstock,
while Nick takes on
the role of the pompous
director Ken De La Maise.
“I was just called in
from Hollywood, where I
drop names left and right,”
Nick Markionni said of his
character. “I know so-andso,
I’ve been in this movie
with so-and-so.”
The production marks
the 20th anniversary of the
Drama Group’s theater exchange
program with Stables
Theatre in Hastings,
England, which began
with The Drama Group’s
adaptation of “Spoon
River Anthology” and has
involved cross-Atlantic
performances from both
the American and British
theater groups.
“We selected this play,
and they selected a play
called ‘The Virtuous Burglar,’”
Director MaryEllen
Fawk said. “They had
a director for it, and they
couldn’t do it, so they
weren’t able to get another
person to step up and direct,
so they stepped down
from participating in that.
But, we were still going
to go over there and do it
here, so we moved to doing
the complete version
of it here.”
She described The Drama
Group as a “wonderful
place” for devotees of
theater.
“The reasons I really
love working here are,
number one, it feels like
Liz Yerkovich, of New Lenox, playing the role of Berenice Roth, contemplates a
series of murders discussed by the other characters during The Drama Group’s “The
Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.” Photos by Nuria Mathog/22nd Century Media
Geoffrey Purvis (left) and Samm Hilger perform a scene.
a family,” she said. “The
people are wonderful. It
has the sense of being a
repertoire, too. The talent
that is attracted to this organization
is phenomenal,
with people from all over
the Chicagoland area that
have come here.”
The cast members will
head to England to perform
the show after their
final performance on June
16. Jeannie Markionni said
she was especially looking
forward to seeing how
British audiences would
react to an American farce.
“Farces are not something
we do a lot,” she
explained. “We do do
comedies, but farces are a
difficult thing, and it’s interesting
that we’re taking
a farce for our 20th anniversary
to a country where
farces are everything.
They invented, created,
perfected the farce.”
Fellow cast member Liz
Yerkovich, of New Lenox,
said she jumped at the opportunity
to perform in a
farce.
“I think they’re super
fun, and the audiences always
seem to love them,”
she said. “So, it was the
fact that it was a comedy
and a farce that really got
me excited about doing
this show.”
Yerkovich stars as the
lyricist Berenice Roth, a
character she described as
“very eccentric and kind of
a lush.”
“She is very flamboyant
and self-absorbed,” she
said. “I’m so self-absorbed
that pretty much through
the entire show, she has no
clue that there’s even murders
happening.”
New Lenox resident
Jennifer Larkin, the show’s
lighting designer, has been
involved with The Drama
Group for more than two
decades and said the best
part of her job is the people
she works with.
“I like that through the
lights, you can kind of
guide the emotions of the
show,” she said. “For me,
as a lighting designer, this
was a pretty easy production,
‘cause there’s one
set, one room. We do have
some lighting changes.
The cast is tight, they’re
funny. ... There really isn’t
anybody that is not any
good.”

Lincoln-Way grads open salon in Frankfort
Nuria Mathog, Editor
Frankfort’s newest salon is
looking to make the cut.
Founded by three area graduates,
Evolve Hair Salon, located
at 301 N. White St., Suite EE
in Frankfort, launched in early
January and began opening its
doors to clients in March.
Each of the business’s coowners
has ties to the Lincoln-
Way area and the southwest
suburbs: Chicago resident and
Lincoln-Way Central alumna
Elise Carlson, Frankfort resident
and Lincoln-Way East
alumna Marissa Ambrosino
and Joliet resident and Sandburg
alumna Erica Stillwell.
The concept for the new salon
came about when the women’s
father-in-laws, both business
owners, approached the
group with the idea.
“We came and looked at the
place, and it needed a little
work, and we looked at a couple
of other places as well,”
Carlson said. “We came back
to here because it was a great
location.”
Carlson described the trio
as “basically sisters.” She is
best friends with Stillwell and
is married to Ambrosino’s
brother, and the three women
previously worked together for
nearly a decade at the Mokenabased
Planet Color Hair Salon.
“We knew each others’ work
and how we dealt with clients
and how we dealt with a salon
atmosphere,” she said. “So, it
all worked out well.”
As a full-service salon,
Evolve Hair Salon offers color,
texture and styling services, as
well as make-up, waxing and
eyelash extensions. On Mondays,
the salon takes men’s
walk-ins.
“We have barbers from the
old salon that used to be here
— it was called Antonio’s Hair
Salon,” Carlson said. “So, all
the people from Antonio’s work
from us too, and they were in
Frankfort for a very long time.”
For Carlson, who graduated
from the Saint Xavier University
business school in 2007,
salon work became a way to
combine her field of study with
her passion for the beauty industry.
“I became interested when I
started to play a little bit with
hair color when I was in college,
but I never really thought
that I would be a hair stylist,”
she said. “I ended up being a
combination between a business
person and a hair stylist. It
worked out well.”
Stillwell said she found an
interest in the industry as a
high school student, when one
of her older friends participated
in a beauty school program.
“Just by watching what she
was doing, I decided, ‘That’s
what I want to do,’” Stillwell
said.
Carlson said the group went
through “millions of names”
for their new business before
ultimately settling on “Evolve
Hair Salon.”
“It kind of goes with how
we want our business to run,”
she said. “We want things to be
ever-changing and upbeat and
modern.”
What sets Evolve Hair Salon
apart is the business’s focus on
all types of services, both new
and traditional, Carlson said.
“There’s not just one type of
stylist in here,” Stillwell added.
“There’s people who are getting
a weekly roller-set perm to
somebody getting the fashion
mermaid hair that’s out there
right now.”
The salon plans to host a
grand opening on Sunday, June
23, to introduce the Frankfort
community to the new business.
“We’re going to do a day DJ
brunch kind of a thing, with
Evolve Hair Salon co-owners (left to right) Erica Stillwell, Elise Carlson and Marissa Ambrosino
launched the new business in January. Photos submitted
music and food,” Carlson said.
‘We’ll be raffling off prizes, all
of the new products we’ll be
selling.”
Above all else, Carlson said
she hopes customers have a relaxing
and unique experience
when they walk through the
doors at Evolve Hair Salon.
“If they’re looking for something
specific, if they’re looking
for something that they’ve
always gotten, we just want
them to have exactly what
they’ve come in looking for,”
she said.
LWSRA says ‘Thank you’ to
community with free party
Yasmeen Sheikah
Freelance Reporter
Awareness, acceptance
and a good time were
brought about on June 3
at the Community Park,
20261 S. Graceland Lane
in Frankfort. The Lincolnway
Special Recreation
Association had their free
kick-off summer event including
a bouncy house
and snacks.
Children ran through
the park enjoying the day,
along with over 100 other
community members. According
to marketing, outreach
and fundraising specialist
for LWSRA Karyn
Reczek, the foundation
works to promote events,
such as this one, to give
children with special needs
a good time.
“I have a child on the
autistic spectrum,” Reczek
said. “These events are put
together to raise awareness
and are free to the public…
We are an organization
with over 390 participants.”
Reczek added that LWS-
RA has 200 programs a
year that serve the Lincoln-
Way area, including Mokena,
Frankfort and New
Lenox. Those programs
are viewable on LWSRA’s
website at lwsra.org.
“I want people to leave
here today feeling like
they had a good time and
knowing more about who
we are and why this is
such an important organization
for people with special
needs,” Reczek said.
“Whether you are related
to someone or know someone
with special needs,
this is an organization that
needs to be seen.”
Scott Pedziwiatr, another
organizer, was the DJ
for the day.
“This event is about
spreading what our organization
represents and
we just really want everyone
to have a good time,”
Pedziwiatr said. “We are
a recreational opportunity
that provides inclusion and
service to those with special
needs.”
Event goers, such as
Becky Ziada and her
daughters, said they had a
blast. Ziada said she found
out about the event from a
friend who texted her.
“I live in Tinley Park but
I grew up in Frankfort,”
Ziada said. “I think this is
a great organization and
what they are doing for
those with special needs
is amazing. My family is
having a blast.”
Brenda Molloy happened
to be passing by the
event with her family and
saw the sign for the party.
“It looked like fun so
we decided to stop by,”
Molloy said. “We love to
support organizations with
good causes, and this is
something we would definitely
come to again.”
Patrick Rossetto just
finished his junior season
on the Lincoln-Way East
water polo team.
How would you say
the season went?
It was a big success at
the end for us. It wasn’t as
far as we would have liked
to go, obviously we had
that heartbreaker in the
[state] semifinals but going
that far when we haven’t
gone past the [state quarterfinals]
was definitely a
huge success for us.
When did you start
playing water polo?
I started when I was 9,
playing country club water
polo. I slowly moved
in to playing club, there’s
a local club called LAW
[Lincoln-Way Area Water
Polo) that I got into around
11. I have continued to
play since.
What have you
learned from coach
[Ryan] Lodes
throughout your
career?
I’d say just to always
have fun with it. Lodes
does a really great job at
making it feel like a family
environment. It makes
it easier showing up to a 5
a.m. practice when you enjoy
hanging out with your
coach. He’s a fun guy.
What’s been your
favorite memory while
playing water polo at
LW East?
Definitely last year and
this year’s sectionals. Seeing
and having a crowd to
play for, all of our friends
and family would show
up for sectionals and that
meant a lot to us.
What’s been the best
part of being a Lincoln-
Way East athlete?
Being with the guys,
you grow so much with
them it becomes more like
a brotherhood. It just happens
naturally from spending
so much time with
them, they’re always there
for you, even outside of
the pool. They are there for
you with school and helping
with other friendships.
I’m not sure it can be said
about other teams, but we
are all really close friends.
Who is your favorite
athlete?
Probably Tiger Woods.
Seeing him be so dominant
and then coming back
from injury and being in
the mix again. I admire
that drive and determination.
If you could meet
anyone from history,
who would it be?
Teddy Roosevelt, I
learned about him in Mr.
Olsen’s history class. He’s
just an interesting character,
obviously being president
and the many stories
of things, he did before becoming
president.
His accomplishments
definitely put other people’s
to shame. Meeting
him and asking about his
STEVE MILLAR/22ND CENTURY
MEDIA
adventures in the wilderness
would be super interesting.
Any other favorite
sports besides water
polo?
I used to be a really big
volleyball player actually.
They’re during the same
season, so I had to make
the choice and I chose
water polo. I played a lot
of volleyball before high
school.
What’s your favorite
thing to do in your
downtime?
I like to read a lot. Usually
historical books or adventure
books like Harry
Potter or Percy Jackson.
I’ve spent a lot of time
reading.
Any goals for next
season?
I’d like to get back to
state and recompete there.
My big thing next year is
winning sectionals. We
have a four-year streak going
now and I don’t want
to lose that streak while
the team is under my leadership.
We’ll see what happens.
Postseason
Marist locals fall short in state playoff runs
STEVE MILLAR, Sports Editor
Frankfort resident Max
Malley started what would
turn out to be the final game
of his high school career
with Marist on a high note.
Malley singled in the
first inning of the Springfield
Supersectional
against Edwardsville on
June 3, helping set up a run
for the RedHawks.
That would be Malley’s
last high school hit, however.
He finished 1-for-4
and Marist dropped a 6-5
heartbreaker to Edwardsville,
which went on to win
the Class 4A state championship
on Saturday, June 8
in Joliet.
Malley, who played
catcher and hit cleanup for
the RedHawks, hit .377 for
the season with 25 RBI
and 23 runs.
The Evansville recruit is
now playing for the Chicago
Heights-based Southland
Vikings of the Midwest
Collegiate League.
Fellow Frankfort resident
Logan Anderson, who
just finished his freshman
season at South Suburban
College, is also on the
Southland Vikings.
Marist’s softball team,
meanwhile, made it one step
beyond its baseball team before
being upset twice at the
state finals in East Peoria.
RedHawks junior Brianna
Brown, a graduate of
Summit Hill Junior High,
had two RBI in a 10-2 win
over Geneva in the Class
4A Supersectional, sealing
Marist’s trip to state.
Brown’s defense is center
field was key in two
tight 1-0 sectional wins
over Sandburg and Riverside-Brookfield.
“I experienced getting
to state as a freshman [in
2017], but it’s really special
to get this far with this
team this year,” Brown
said. “Throughout the season,
it’s been quite a ride
and we haven’t had a lot of
really close games, so those
[sectional] games were big
tests for us and we showed
we can step up.”
Marist went to the state
finals on a 34-game winning
streak and had not
lost to an Illinois team all
year, but the RedHawks
were upset by Huntley in
the semifinals Friday, June
7 and Joliet West in the
third-place game Saturday,
June 8, both by 3-2 scores.
Brown, a Penn recruit,
scored a run in the semifinal
and drove in a run in
the third-place game.
Softball
LW East excited about future after sectional loss
RANDY WHALEN, Freelance
Reporter
STEVE MILLAR, Sports Editor
With only five seniors
on its roster, Lincoln-Way
East’s softball team still
put together a strong season,
going 22-7, winning
its 13th regional title, and
reaching at least 21 wins
for the 16th time in 18 seasons
of existence.
The Griffins failed to
reach the sectional finals
for the first time since 2013
when they fell to Lockport
in the Thornwood Sectional
semifinals on May 30.
The future, however, appears
bright.
Some of East’s reasons
for excitement were on
display even in the seasonending
defeat.
Take Madison Pomykalski.
The freshman pinch
hit for the Griffins in the
top of the fifth against
Lockport and pounded a
two-run home run to center
field that hit the flag
pole and bounced back on
the field.
That bookended a nice
freshman season that saw
Pomykalski hit two home
runs, in her first and final
at-bats of the season. In
her first at-bat, on March
29, she hit a game-ending
two-run home run in the
bottom of the fifth in a
12-1 win over Normal
Community.
“No, I didn’t know it
was gone,” said Pomykalski,
of her sectional homer.
“When I rounded second
I saw the ball on the field
and thought it was in play.”
Pomykalski knows
about talent and winning.
As an outfielder, she won
three straight state championships
as a member of
the Hickory Creek Middle
School softball team.
“We’re always talking,
we’re always loud,” Pomykalski
said, describing
the atmosphere around the
East team. “We always try
to stay up, our confidence
is really high. “It’s going
to be nice, it’s going to
be a good one in the next
couple of years. We have
a bunch of girls that are
coming in that are young
and it’s going to be good.”
Junior and Pitt recruit
Danielle Drogemuller had
a strong first season in the
ace’s role after previously
pitching sparingly as Alex
Storako - now at Michigan
- carried the heavy load.
Drogemuller went 16-7
with a 2.01 ERA and struck
out 161 batters in 125.1 innings
pitched. She also hit
.333 with five home runs.
Drogemuller figures to
give the Griffins a chance
to win just about every
time out in 2020.
Her battery-mate, catcher
Chloe Honchar, is also
expected to return after
hitting .375 with three
home runs and 28 RBI as
a junior this season.
Junior Paige Geraghty
sparked the Griffins all
season from the leadoff
spot, hitting .457 with 18
stolen bases and 35 runs.
Freshmen Ashley Esposito,
Chloe Geijer and
Danielle Stewart were also
among the seven underclassmen
who started the
final game of the season
against Lockport, which
also included sophomore
Taylor Hochman and junior
Kara Frencl.
“I’m excited about next
year,” Geraghty said. “We
can have a great season.
We just need to have confidence
in ourselves and not
let little things determine
the game. Just because
someone hits a home run
against us or something
like that, the game’s not
over. We have to keep going
and produce runs.”
Healthy Henning enjoys recruiting experience, track season
STEVE MILLAR, Sports Editor
It was a whirlwind
spring for AJ Henning.
Lincoln-Way East’s
star wide receiver/running
back, ranked as the
top recruit in Illinois in
the Class of 2020 by 247
Sports, travelled across the
country on recruiting visits
to some of the nation’s top
football programs. He still
managed to find the time
to compete on the Griffins’
track and field team.
Henning’s unofficial
visits in the spring included
stops at Illinois,
Northwestern, Georgia,
Florida, Alabama, Louisville,
Notre Dame and
Michigan.
He’s tried to soak in the
whole experience and enjoy
all the trips.
“It’s a blessing,” Henning
said. “Not a lot of
players have that opportunity
to do it, so it’s a very
special thing.”
There have been some
surreal moments along the
way, like meeting Alabama
coach Nick Saban and posing
for a picture with him.
Henning was also excited
to get to know Michigan
coach and former
Bears quarterback Jim
Harbaugh.
“Getting to meet all
these coaches, Nick Saban,
Harbaugh, I’ve always
dreamed of that,” Henning
said. “It’s pretty cool to
actually meet them in person,
shake their hand and
have a conversation with
them.
“There have been a lot
of fun moments and I’m
just trying to enjoy the
whole process.”
Henning, a consensus
four-star recruit, has over
30 offers from major programs.
Nearly the entire
Big 10 - Illinois, Indiana,
Iowa, Michigan, Michigan
State, Minnesota, Northwestern,
Ohio State, Penn
State, Purdue, Nebraska,
Rutgers and Wisconsin –
has offered.
Alabama, Georgia,
LSU, Missouri and Tennessee
have all come calling
from the SEC, as have
Boston College, Duke,
Florida State, Miami and
Syracuse from the ACC
and Stanford of the Pac 12.
Henning is ranked as the
No. 78 player and No. 16
receiver in the nation by
247Sports.
Rivals has him as the
No. 3 all-purpose back,
No. 84 overall and No.
2 in Illinois behind East
St. Louis safety Antonio
Johnson.
Back on the track
Henning finished third
in the state in the 100-meter
dash as a freshman but
missed his entire sophomore
track season after hip
surgery.
Injuries have kept him
off the football field for
portions of the last two
seasons, as well, but Henning
said he felt great this
spring while picking up
where he left off on the
track.
“It’s been awesome,” he
said. “It’s been great to be
with the team and be able
to compete on the track
again. It’s been a lot of
fun.”
“That was my thing all
year, to get back down [to
state] and show I’ve still
got it in the 100.”
Henning qualified for
state and saved his best
race for Charleston as he
turned in a season-best
time of 10.73 seconds in
the finals to finish fourth in
the state.
“The whole goal was to
make it back to the finals
and have a good race,”
Henning said. “The drive
phase, then you hit your
top end and try to maintain
it the rest of the race.”
Henning felt the track
season helped him get
primed for a huge senior
year on the football field.
“Being out there competing
again really meant
a lot to me,” he said. “It
keeps me sharp and keeps
me fast heading into the
fall.”
The decision looms
Henning plans to return
to several of his spring
destinations for official
visits over the summer.
He made his first official
visit to Georgia the first
weekend of June and was
scheduled to visit Notre
Dame last weekend. A
Michigan trip is coming
up.
Forty-three percent of
247Sports’ experts predict
Henning to choose Notre
Dame, 29 percent pick
Michigan and the rest are
undecided.
Henning says he falls
into that latter category as
well, and he’s in no major
rush to make a choice.
“I’m taking it slow,” he
said. “I plan to make a decision
over the summer or
in the fall.”
Henning is an excellent
student and will factor academics
into his decision as
well.
“It’s just about finding
the right fit all around,”
he said. “Academics are
important, fitting in with
the players and the coaching
staff is important. It’s
finding the place that feels
right for me.”
Whatever school lands
Henning will be fortunate,
according to East coach
Rob Zvonar.
Last fall, Zvonar called
Henning “a special talent
with an incredibly bright
future.”
The immediate future will
be highlighted by one more
season at East, one Henning
plans to make special.
“I’m really excited for
the fall,” he said. “I think
we’re going to have a great
team and I’m ready to get
after it. I’m ready to go out
there with my guys and
chase after a state championship.”
THREE THINGS TO
KNOW ABOUT LW EAST
FOOTBALL STAR AJ
HENNING
1. Four-star recruit
Henning (above)
has over 30
scholarship offers
from top college
football programs.
247Sports ranks
him as the top
recruit in Illinois in
2020, while Rivals
places him second.
2. Four-star person
Henning is a strong
student and has a
personality that is
also attractive to
college coaches.
That was shown in a
video which gained
popularity last
weekend, showing
Henning visiting
a local fan on his
eighth birthday.
3. Fourth in state
After missing his
sophomore track
season, Henning
returned this year
and finished fourth
in the state in the
100-meter dash.
When Ben Troike was
hit by a pitch in a game
against Indiana in early
May and broke his right
thumb, it didn’t just end
the Illinois shortstop’s junior
season. It also cast
some doubt on his status
for the Major League
Baseball Draft.
Troike, a Lincoln-Way
North graduate and Tinley
Park native, was unsure
how him missing the final
month of the season would
impact teams’ attempts to
evaluate him.
“I wasn’t sure what
would happen,” Troike
said. “It all worked out in
the end.”
Troike’s moment to celebrate
came June 5 when
the Tampa Bay Rays selected
him in the 11th
round with the 338th overall
pick.
“When I saw my name
flash across the screen, it
was a dream come true,”
Troike said. “It’s been my
dream since I was a little
kid. Being there, watching
it with my family, it was
just phenomenal.”
Troike said his nerves
were building heading into
the final day of the draft,
but he didn’t have to wait
long as the Rays took him
in the first round of the
day. The first two rounds
took place June 3, with
rounds 3-10 the following
day.
“I was following the
the Cubs in the 33rd round of the MLB Draft. STEVE
MILLAR/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
draft, woke up, got a couple
calls,” Troike said. “I
got calls from my advisor,
wasn’t really sure when
I was going to go, but we
kind of had an Idea that
early on [June 5], I’d get
my name called. Fortunately,
the Rays picked
me in the 11th round and I
couldn’t be happier.”
Lincoln-Way Central
coach Mitch Nowicki,
who coached Troike at
North, said in a tweet that
Troike “had unprecedented
work ethic, always the
first to [the] field, craving
extra reps. Tremendous
competitor.”
Troike hit .260 with two
home runs and 21 RBI in
45 games this spring. His
most productive season
with the Illini was a sophomore
in 2018, when he hit
.299 with four home runs
and 30 RBI.
With a year of eligibility
remaining at Illinois,
Troike has a decision to
make. It’s typical for collegiate
juniors picked as
high as the 11th round to
sign as seniors are thought
to have less leverage in
contract negotiations.
“I’m going to weigh all
my options,” Troike said.
“I haven’t made a decision
yet. I’m going to talk
things over with my family,
coaches and make the
best decision I can. It’s a
big decision. At the end
of the day, I think it just
comes down to what feels
right.
“I don’t think I’ve ever
been to Tampa. I’m excited
to get down there,
check it out and see what
it’s all about.”
If Troike does decide to
sign, he believes he can aid
the Rays with his defense
and work ethic.
“My glove is definitely
my strongest asset on the
baseball field,” he said.
round of the MLB Draft.
“I’m a defense-first kind of
guy. Teams see someone
who’s not the biggest, not
the fastest, not the strongest,
but when I go out
there, I give it everything
I have and hopefully good
things happen.”
Lincoln-Way East senior
Ryan Ritter, meanwhile,
was drafted by the Cubs
in the 33rd round with the
1,002nd overall pick.
Ritter, also from Tinley
Park, said he’s always
been a White Sox fan.
“I’m starting to love the
Cubs a little bit more now,
though,” Ritter said.
Ritter, who is committed
to Austin Peay, figured
he might hear his name
called late in the draft, but
was unsure it would happen.
When it did, it was
quite the memorable moment.
“It felt really good,” he
said. “It’s always been a
dream of mine. I’m happy
it came true.”
Ritter was the Griffins’
top hitter this spring, finishing
with a .429 average,
four home runs, 23
RBI, 41 runs and 10 stolen
bases.
He said he will evaluate
his options over the coming
days.
“I’m going to talk to
my family and my coaches,
figure out what’s best
for me and just go from
there,” he said.
For now, Ritter’s summer
plans involve prepping
for college.
“I might play for the
[Northwest Indiana] Oilmen
in the Midwest Collegiate
League,” he said.
“My goal is to go into college
and fit in physically.
My plan this summer is to
eat a lot, work out a lot and
just stay sharp with baseball.”
