Car show cruises back into Lockport for 2019
Mary Compton
Freelance Reporter
On June 3, people were
dancing while little deuce
coupes were lined up along
S. Hamilton Street in Lockport.
The scene meant one
thing: Cruisin’ into Lockport
has returned.
“This night is always
fun,” Lockport Mayor
Steve Streit said. “Everyone
likes gathering on a
Monday. It’s a small festival
we do where we get to
say ‘hi’ to neighbors.”
Streit and his wife, Wendy,
were checking out the
muscle cars at the Monday
night event.
“I’m going to try and
bring out my Willys Jeep,”
Steve Streit said.
“We do have other
things planned throughout
the summer, as well,”
added Wendy Streit, who
is Lockport’s Summer Art
Series chairperson. “We
want to make sure we have
lots of events throughout
the summer in Lockport.
One of the things were doing
is the frames. There
will be three, 6-feet-tall
frames placed in various
places in downtown Lockport.
We would like people
to take photos behind them
and post the photos online
where you’re entered in a
raffle to win prizes. You
don’t have to be a Lockport
resident to do this.”
“The State Street construction
will be wrapping
up in a few weeks,” Steve
Streit added. “Then, Stagecoach
Restaurant will also
be opening up.”
Hundreds of residents
turned out for the first
festival of the summer in
Lockport. As residents
and friends sat on folding
chairs and blankets, others
danced where they could.
Lockport resident Kevin Perkins (left) talks to Nick Kleinmark, of Lockport, about his
roadster.
Providing the music for
the evening was Cadillac
Grove. There is to be a
different band every Monday
night. Listening to the
music as he walked around
the classic cars was Lockport
Township Supervisor
Ron Alberico.
“I come out and support
the car show every
Monday night if it’s not
raining,” Alberico said.
“Being a musician all my
life, I enjoy the bands that
perform each week.”
Lockport Township
partners with the city of
Lockport and the Lockport
Township Park District
that helps sponsor Cruisin’
into Lockport. There are
also business sponsors
each week. Cruisin’ into
Lockport T-shirts are sold
during the events.
“Tonight is about community,”
Alberico said.
“It’s good to have people
come on a beautiful night.
We get a lot of cars, we get
a lot of people.”
This is the second year
that Lockport resident
Kevin Perkins has been
bringing his 1922 Dodge
Roadster out for the event.
According to Perkins, he
has the oldest automobile
at Cruisin’ into Lockport.
“I did most of the work
myself on this Roadster,”
Perkins explained. “It was
a half-started project. I saw
this on eBay, and I was the
only bidder.”
Everyone from old men
to young boys wanted to
get a closer look at the
relic. The doors on it are
welded shut, so Perkins has
to jump in the driver’s seat.
“That’s the best way to
get in and out is jump in
and go,” Perkins said. “This
car always seems to draw a
crowd. Almost 100 years
old and it’s going strong.
And if you gotta go, the air
cleaner is a bed pan.”
Perkins owns five cars
and switches them around
at each show.
“It’s a good hobby,
but they take up a lot of
space,” he said.
Perkins has lived in
Lockport for 12 years. One
of the reasons he attends
Cruisin’ into Lockport is
to see old friends and meet
new ones.
“I love Lockport,” Perkins
said. “This is a nice
close-knit town. This is
one of the reasons I moved
here, it’s an old lifestyle
like living in the [1950s].
We all have a good time.”
ASK
YOUR
LAWYER
by T. Andrew Coyle
Attorney at Law
Back in 2012, Illinois
passed a law allowing
for homeowners to sign
what is called a “Transfer
on Death Instrument”
(or, TODI). A TODI is a
document whereby
homeowners name the
person or people they
would want to own their
real estate if the owners
passed away while still
owning that real estate.
The document needs to be
signed by all the owners of
the real estate in front of
two independent witnesses
and all those signatures
need to be notarized. The
document then needs
to be recorded with the
county recorder where the
property sits. This can be
useful in estate planning
for people who own their
house but don’t have many
other large assets and
where they are confident
that the person they are
naming to receive the
property will accept that
transfer.
If you have any other
questions about the best
way to set up your own
estate plan, please call
