June 15...next Saturday...Meeting at the Hermon D Lowery Field at 6:30
Bring something to fly before or after.
...and the Saturday after that, June 22, is our Open House….fly anything you want.

President
Denny Baker
Vice President
Moe Neibecker
This month the club will be having it's first event of the year. In order to make this a success,
we will need help to pitch in. There will be an area for a swap meet, so if you would like to
sell something, bring it. Also, if you have something to donate to a raffle, bring it. This event
is open for everyone to fly, so bring whatever you fly and have some fun.
Although the field has been sprayed for weeds and bugs, the gnats still are a major problem.
There has been one crash attributed that I'm aware of that was caused by the gnats. Anything
with vanilla seems to help.
A club member lost a small drone in the tall weeds one day and could not find it. The next
day within 5minutes, it was found. Sometimes you get pretty lucky.
Don't forget Hot Dog Wednesday, good flying and food...Denny
The weather has been improving, but not fast enough for us fliers. Hopefully mother
nature will give us a break. I wanted to once again thank all the members attending the Hot
Dog Wednesday get-togethers. The crowd gets a little bigger every time. Our last gettogether
the members that attended really had a good time. A lot of flying took place. There
was new model test flying, a glider pull, and of course some dog fighting. Every one had a
great time, and the food was good. Also some of the members that needed help with their
projects got the help they needed. We should be seeing some new planes take to the air
soon.
To keep you up to date, our Mystery Dog Fighter was at it again. He and Shane got
into a real two man dog fight. It was an electric powered Tundra and a .90 powered Dragon
Lady tearing up the sky. Then out of no where a third contender got into the brawl. The unknown
third party had a plan worked out for a sure win in this fight. Instead of going after
ribbons, he went after the pilots. The third party scored a direct kill on our Mystery Dog
Fighter by hitting him square in his eye! That was the first time I ever saw a "Buffalo Gnat"
take out a .90 size airplane. Good thing the ground was soft. Our Mystery Pilot shrugged
this kill off and said he'd be back. Watch your six guys. This fighter pilot is getting serious!
Although the Dragon Lady mentioned by Moe
was by far the worst causality on that particular
Hot Dog Wednesday in May,
other flyers had their share of troubles.
A monthly meeting of the Pekin RC Club was held at the Hermon D Lowery Field on May
18, 2019 . There were 12 members present. Chris Leibel moved to accept the April minutes.
Seconded by Moe Neibecker, the motion passed. Jim Roach moved to accept the April Treasurer’s
Report. Seconded by Shane Davis, the motion passed.
President Denny Baker thanked those attending the meeting. Denny mentioned there
were 4-5 members that attended the Peoria Club’s open house and attending gave him several
ideas on what we could do at our events.
Vice President Moe Neibecker mentioned Brian Kuehn has set up the Club with a Facebook
page and the e-mail address for Brian for members to use to send articles and photos is
peachy.kuehn@gmail.com.
Secretary/Treasurer Dennis Shoemaker advised that 38 members had paid dues so far
this year and the roster will be sent out soon. Dennis also relayed the thank you card the Club
received from The Friends of the Bartonville Fire Department and Rescue
Under Old Business, Dennis Shoemaker investigated the By Laws for meetings, which
are monthly, however it was the consensus at this meeting that the meeting schedule should
stay as is.
Under New Business considerable discussion was focused on the runway condition and
the need to fill the cracks and sealcoat the asphalt. Measurement after the meeting confirmed
the runway is 20’ wide x 199’ long. Dennis Shoemaker will get a quote for sealcoating and crack
filler as a reference and Denny Baker will locate materials for a DIY approach. Jim Roach made
a motion to allocate up to $600 for materials. Seconded by Moe Neibecker, the motion passed.
Regarding Events, Denny Baker indicated the Peoria Club had paintball, 50/50 raffle and
raffled donation items from members.
Regarding Safety, Denny Baker indicated the pilot station fences will be re-installed. On
another safety concern, the abandoned lipo batteries in the sand bucket need everyone’s attention.
The bucket is intended to be used in an emergency to cover a smoking or flaming lipo or a
hot lipo needing to cool down. The bucket is NOT a disposal location. Those that have used the
bucket should remove their batteries once safe to do so and arrange for proper disposal. The
bucket also is for lipos only. Lipos, LiFE, NiMH or alkaline batteries should not be disposed of
on site or in the sand bucket.
Regarding Grounds and Maintenance, Chris Leibel indicated spraying for bugs will be
done soon, the water is now on, mole chaser batteries are renewed and Lynnae Bessler intends
to do flower planting at the frequency board.
Steve Heisel brought his Stick and got several great flights in. Shane Davis brought a helicopter
and…um...not so much.
The 50/50 raffle ($19 total) was won by Shane Davis, who donated his portion back to the
Club.
Bill Swearinger moved to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by John Kramer, the motion
passed.
Attached are some photos of an Eflite Pitts S1S biplane I recently purchased. The Pitts has
a 33.5 inch wingspan. It is powered by a brushless electric motor that is powered by a 2200
mah 3S battery. The biplane was very easy to assemble. It took me about two hours to complete
it and another hour to program it and double check everything. I had my doubts about
how this airplane would fly. After the first flight, I was completely satisfied with how well it
flew. I've built a lot of biplanes, but none of them flys as well as this little one. I was in complete
shock at how well if flys. It looks very realistic in the air and on the ground. It's a keeper.
Moe
Caught up with Bob Schaich on June 1 when no one was flying. He was giving his 4x RC
truck a workout. Several members lately have developed an interest in cars/trucks.
While watching Bob run the truck, we had a fly by of 3 of the CH-47 Chinook’s out of Peoria.
All flyers, please stay East of the trees on the West end of the field. Also please do
not fly overhead or behind the flight line. Just a reminder!
Now the sitting board would like you too please put your AMA or Pekin RC Club membership
card or both on the frequency board. This has been a rule from the beginning.
Please be careful when starting and removing your glow plug igniter as not to get
arms hands and clothes in the prop.
If you see something that is wrong, say something or tell a board member or me what
was wrong.
Thank you,
Paul Bessler
...and from the last meeting ….On another safety concern, the abandoned lipo
batteries in the sand bucket need everyone’s attention. The bucket is intended to be used
in an emergency to cover a smoking or flaming lipo or a hot lipo needing to cool down. The
bucket is NOT a disposal location. Those that have used the bucket should remove their
batteries once safe to do so and arrange for proper disposal. The bucket also is for lipos
only. Lipo, LiFE, NiMH or alkaline batteries should not be disposed of on site or in the sand
bucket.
Also safety related, we’re happy to report that former member Kevin Cline and family
dodged serious damage and injury in the recent tornado that ravaged Jefferson City, Mo.
It sounds like it was really close...the serious damage was just a few hundred feet
away from their house and they did loose power for a while.
Now they’re dealing with record flooding from the Missouri River. It won’t affect their
house directly, but the region generally will be dealing with the aftermath of the tornado and
the flooding for some time to come.
