Development Projects
New developments within 8 miles (13 km) of an
aerodrome requiring support to discharge wildlife
hazard safeguarding obligations in planning applications
processes.
Expertise in reviewing proposed plans to assess for
likely catalysts of increased bird populations and bird
strike risks for local airports and heliports.
Established experience in producing a wildlife hazard
management plan for developments to address
enabling works, construction works and for when
completed facilities are in use.

Surveys
Our wildlife and habitat surveys
provide a clear understanding on
the factors influencing the presence
of wildlife species of concern for
airports, helipads and development
sites.
We identify the key locations
surrounding airfields and
helipads requiring wildlife hazard
management attention.
All our survey results are presented in
a bound report with recommended
actions, plus a map annotated with
key wildlife hazard source locations,
bird flight lines and regular flight
paths for aircraft.
Strike Risk
Assessments
Know the location and scale of your
bird and wildlife hazard risks.
We assess risk levels for the species
of concern for airports and helipads,
considering the risk probability for
critical flight zones of manoeuvring
aircraft.
All our risk assessments comply
with regulatory and good practice

Risk assessment results include

The Client
Silvertown Homes Limited (SHL) is a
property development company and
joint landowner on the Thameside
West site. SHL has over 65 years
combined experience at delivering
high quality regeneration projects
across London.
A hybrid planning application to the
London Borough of Newham for the
redevelopment of a central London
site.
Located within 1.5 miles (2.5 km),
along the banks of the River Thames
and directly under an approach flight
path for London City Airport.
The development plans included
high-rise buildings, green and brown
roofs, sustainable urban drainage
systems (SUDS), various water
features, sports pitches and outside
eating areas.

We provided identification of the
bird species presenting the greatest
risk of bird strikes for aircraft using
the airport.
A review of the proposed plans
noted catalysts likely to create
elevations in bird populations and
bird strike risks.
Our detailed wildlife hazard
management plan included a
programme of actions to mitigate
risks from construction to when
complete and in use; plus bird
management plans for trees, soft
landscaping, green and brown roofs
and SUDs.

Case Study
Wildlife Hazard Management Performance Review to address unexplained
elevation in bird strikes at an international airport.

and/or damage arising from the
occurrence of a bird strike.
The Client
London Southend Airport is an
international airport in Essex,
approximately 36 miles (58 km) from
the centre of London.
Currently the UK’s fastest growing
airport with Ryanair, Easyjet and
Flybe flying year-round to and from
many destinations across Europe.
The Challenges
London Southend Airport is a
busy airport with firefighting teams
also carrying out wildlife hazard
management duties.
The requirement was to understand
the range of factors influencing the
unexplained elevation in bird strikes.
A wildlife and habitat survey of
the surrounding 8 miles (13 km);
covering areas of housing, industrial
units, farmland and salt marshes.
The Solution
We undertook a study of current
wildlife hazard management
practice, interviewed personnel and
reviewed records. We were looking
for results and trends that evidenced
areas for improved performance.
We provided a detail report which
identified the specific causes for
elevations in bird strikes and provided
a programme of prioritised actions to
mitigate future performance issues.
All have now been successfully
implemented.
