Brampton scores higher than Mississauga in
annual 'best places to live' in Canada report
RE/MAX Canada
liveability report
assesses 11
categories
Canada’s sixth and
ninth largest cities were
both ranked among the
best places to live in RE/
MAX Canada’s annual
liveability report released
earlier this month — with
Brampton scoring higher
in more categories than
Mississauga.
Other Ontario cities
making the top 15 this year
included Toronto, Hamilton,
Ottawa, Kitchener-
Waterloo and London.
The report scored each
city based on 11 categories.
Mississauga scored
“high” in three of those
categories — availability
of work/access to employment
opportunities,
economic development
and population growth —
while scoring “medium”
Brampton (left) and Mississauga city halls
in the remaining eight.
“A survey of RE/MAX
brokers revealed that the
best places to live in Mississauga
are Port Credit,
Streetsville and Cooksville,
ranking as the top
three neighbourhoods in
Mississauga for access to
green spaces and parks,
walkability, retail and
restaurants and the ease
of getting around/public
transit,” wrote RE/MAX
PR and content manager
Lydia McNutt.
“The city is also the
Canadian headquarters to
more than 60 Fortune 500
companies. Mississauga’s
explosive growth in recent
decades has been attributed
to its close proximity to
Toronto, although it has
certainly become a destination
and a world-class
city in its own right,” she
added in the report.
Brampton outpaced
its Peel Region neighbour
in the 2019 report, scoring
“high” in seven of the 11
categories and “medium”
in the remaining four.
The report ranked
Heartlake, Sandringham
and Fletchers Meadow as
the top three neighbourhoods
in the city.
"Brampton is a culturally
diverse city located in
the Greater Toronto Area,
Pediatrician suspended from
practice while child sex
allegations before court
and the third-most populous
city in the Greater
Golden Horseshoe, behind
Toronto and Mississauga.
The city has been ripe
with new development
since the 1980s, and continues
to be a hot spot for
home-building and buying,
as many find themselves
priced out of Toronto’s
housing market," said
McNutt. "The area continues
to attract employers
and residents, thanks to
its proximity to downtown
Toronto, Pearson airport
and the lower cost of land
here," she added.
Like Mississauga,
Brampton scored "high "
in availability of work/
access to employment opportunities,
economic
development and population
growth. However,
Brampton also scored
high marks for availability
of public transit, access
to green spaces and
parks, availability of big
and small retail stores and
easy access to bike lanes
and/or walking paths.
Category scores were
calculated based on survey
results gathered from
RE/MAX agents in each
Canadian city. A score
in any given category between
one and five was
considered “low,” six to
eight “medium” and nine
or 10 was deemed “high.”
The remaining categories
not listed above
include: number of top
rated/preferred schools,
housing supply, housing
affordability, and access
to health care facilities.
Both Mississauga and
Brampton scored "medium"
in each of those areas.
Other cities outside
Ontario making the top
15 included Vancouver,
Nanaimo and Victoria in
British Columbia, as well
as Calgary and Edmonton
in Alberta. Winnipeg,
Saskatoon and Halifax
rounded out this year's top
entries.
Local Women-Led Business
A pediatrician who resigned
from a St. Albert
clinic in April after being
charged with sexual interference
and sexual assault
of a minor has now been
suspended from practising
medicine.
Dr. Ramneek Kumar's
practice permit was suspended
effective Monday,
the College of Physicians
and Surgeons of Alberta
said in a news release
Tuesday.
The suspension will remain
in effect "pending the
resolution of the criminal
charges and any associated
CPSA disciplinary processes,"
the news release
said.
"As Alberta's medical
college registrar Dr. Scott
CPSA suspends permit of physician charged with sexual interference and
sexual assault
Edmonton, AB – The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) has suspended the practice
permit of Dr. Ramneek Kumar upon thorough review of the case involving charges of two counts of sexual
interference and one count of sexual assault of a minor by RCMP.
“As Alberta’s medical regulator, our first priority is to protect the public,” says CPSA Registrar Dr. Scott
McLeod. “CPSA followed appropriate process and protocols to use the Health Professions Act’s full
authority to suspend his practice permit.”
While the charges have yet to be proven in a court of law, CPSA does not believe it’s appropriate for Dr.
Kumar to practise medicine for the duration of the legal process. Under section 65 of the Health
Professions Act, CPSA has the authority to suspend a practice permit pending the resolution of the formal
process.
On April 2, 2019, CPSA announced a chaperone condition on Dr. Kumar’s practice permit to ensure public
safety while the suspension under section 65 was pursued.
Dr. Kumar’s practice permit has been suspended effective May 13, 2019, pending the resolution of the
criminal charges and any associated CPSA disciplinary processes. Dr. Kumar has the right to appeal CPSA’s
practice permit suspension to the Court of Appeal of Alberta.
resigned in early April
Clinic in St. Albert.
Tuesday's news release
said the college "does not
believe it's appropriate
for Dr. Kumar to practise
medicine for the duration
of the legal process."
However, it noted that
Kumar retains the right to
appeal the suspension to
the Court of Appeal of Alberta.
Kumar is charged with
sexually assaulting an
eight-year-old girl in August
2015 while on a family
vacation. The girl was not
one of his patients.
He also faces two
counts of sexual interference
with a person under
the age of 16.
RCMP issued a warrant
for Kumar's arrest on
March 22 and he was taken
into custody five days later.
On April 2, the CPSA
announced it had placed
