PDTE 2019 June Newsletter

Editor’s Welcome
Recently a client described me as a couples counsellor! He said ‘you go
into a home and sit down with the human and the dog and find where the
communication between them has broken down. Then put together a plan
to give hope, and bring harmony back to their relationship once again’.
I laughed, but then realised in a way he is right and that is why I always
consider being one of Turid’s dog behaviourists such an honour. We must
always treat clients with empathy and kindness because we don’t know
what is going on in their lives, and that is where the ‘couples counselling’
approach comes from.
As we know stress is such a huge problem for both people and their
dogs. Amongst so many factors, stress reduces the ability to handle
situations, to think clearly or see a way forwards. It can make people
vulnerable and sensitive to feeling a failure, yet they are desperate for
help with the dog they love.
Through our training with Turid we know how important it is to listen, be
calm and above all show them how to repair that communication, and
how important it is for them to keep it simple and get that relationship
back once again.
Be that inspiration to the owners, and always remember how important
being a dog behaviourist truly is.
