As the world changes technologically and culturally, new-age jobs and industries require us to take the

For the past few generations, we have seen large shifts in education

right for baby boomers to enter the workforce as a high school

How Are Educators Adapting? 

Early education plays a crucial role in this. It requires redesigning 

of education systems and curricula, and retraining educators to 

encourage flexibility rather than specialization. In our efforts 

to help parents make informed educational decisions, we have 

observed a sharp increase in the number of local schools being 

strong advocates of 21st century education. They favour childcentred 

teaching methods, for example, project-based learning

Instead of memorizing facts through rote learning, there is strong

A Need to Reimagine Education

have fallen short of its goals in past education reform efforts. 

Acknowledging and making changes to the key components that 

have undermined the success of the reform movement is our best 

hope for turning our education system into one that is in line 

with the 21st century skills movement, and hopefully benefit lessadvantaged

The Montessori Method of education was developed by Dr 

Maria Montessori, based on her keen observations of how 

children learn in a carefully prepared environment when they 

are given the opportunity to educate themselves. 

Even after a century after its creation, the Montessori method of 

education remains popular. Irrespective of the changes in national 

education systems around the world, the elements of the Montessori 

Method have remained relevant and have stood the test of time. 

Respect the child 

Respect for the child is the first principle of Montessori Method since 

its inception. Children are given the freedom to select the material 

they want to work with. When we respect their choices, a positive 

environment for learning is created. “As a rule, however, we do not 

respect children. We try to force them to follow us without regard to 

their special needs. We are overbearing with them, and above all, 

rude; and then we expect them to be submissive and well-behaved, 

knowing all the time how strong their instinct of imitation is and how 

touching their faith in and admiration of us”, said Dr Maria. 

Absorbent mind of children 

Dr Maria observed that young children are like sponges who have 

the power of learning and absorbing from the world around them. “It 

may be said we acquire knowledge by using our minds; but the child 

absorbs knowledge directly into his psychic life. Simply by continuing 

to live, the child learns to speak his native tongue”. Children are born 

with an innate ability to learn that depends on their environment, 

experiences and interactions. 

Sensitive period 

It refers to that period of time when a child is immensely focused 

and his brain urges him to learn a particular skill or immerse in an 

experience. It can be recognised in situations like a child’s interest in 

repetitively doing the same task until he masters it. The Montessori 

education provides a child with an extended period of activity without 

any interruption. As a result, children follow their interest and progress

(East Asia Regional Council of Schools), have codes of practice and

of the environment and be primed for admission arrangements

to secure better learning support. Do not be afraid to ask about

MANDARIN CHINESE 

It is easy to feel intimidated and assume teaching Mandarin Chinese to children is a near-to-impossible task. 

With a few key pointers, mastering the language is actually easier than you think. 

Mandarin Chinese, being the most widely spoken native language 

in the world and recognizing the role that China is going to play 

in the global economy, makes it a no-brainer that parents would 

want their children to pick up the language. It is also the most 

difficult language to learn, or at least it is perceived as the hardest 

language for non-native speakers to master. The usual challenges 

come with the intonation patterns and the ideographic (it uses 

symbols known as Chinese characters) nature of the language. It 

is easy to feel intimidated and assume teaching Mandarin Chinese 

to children is a near-to-impossible task. With a few key pointers, 

mastering the language is actually easier than you may think. 

Rather than rote memorization, the following method makes 

learning easier and produces long-lasting results: 

CAPTIVATE 

Children learn best when they 

get to participate and explore 

topics that are relevant to their 

interests. Stimulate all senses 

using multi-sensory learning 

tools that engages varied 

textures, colours, movements, 

sounds, shapes or sounds to 

sustain focus. Keep them 

motivated with hands-on 

activities such as songs, 

games, colourful animations 

and role-playing. 

REPEAT 

By repeating words or concepts, 

children get to practice, 

self-correct, master skills, 

strengthen understanding and 

retain knowledge. While 

repetition is important to 

children’s learning and 

development, it does not mean 

doing the exact same activity or 

going through the same story, 

over and over again. Instead, 

provide them with different 

opportunities to practice the 

same skill. For example, learning 

numbers through a song and 

learning how to count using 

beads. 

ACHIEVE 

Be it a beginner or intermediate 

learner, learning Chinese 

through playful, interactive 

experiences and repetition will 

help children develop skills in 

all aspects of the language:

children are most receptive to the immersion method. Practice 

by stimulating supportive interactions with parents, teachers and 

anyone around who is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. To ensure that 

they learn quickly, use materials that provide meaningful contexts 

and are relevant to their interests. Boost learning by reading lots, 

even if it is just ten minutes every day. A recommended tool that 

aids language learning is a series of Mandarin Chinese-English 

bilingual digital audio books by YiDuBao. Another strategy that 

can help enormously is to break down the basics and help children 

understand how Chinese characters are constructed. Knowing the 

function of components in Chinese characters fosters children’s

CHILD HAS SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS 

When your child plays, learns, acts, moves and speaks differently on a regular basis compared to most of his 

or her peers, that is normally a red flag for a possible developmental problem. 

It is universal that when you become a parent, you want to raise 

happy, healthy children. You look forward to seeing them achieve 

their developmental milestones and are prepared to devote eons 

of time to mould them into capable, well-rounded members of 

the society. Throughout the journey, it is important to understand 

children’s developmental milestones and keep a watchful eye on 

their growth. A milestone checklist or a milestone tracker app can 

make it easier to keep track and spot any potential developmental 

delays. While it is true that each child develops at their own unique 

pace, however, when your child plays, learns, acts, moves and 

speaks differently on a regular basis compared to most of his or 

her peers, that is normally a red flag. Sometimes it may just be pure 

parental instinct that tells you something is amiss. If you do spot 

the following indications persistently, heed these early warning 

signs for a possible developmental problem and need for special 

therapy or education. 

• He/she cannot spot and pick up small objects; 

• Tilts his/her head or holds it in an awkward position when 

trying to look at something. 

If your child is persistently experiencing difficulties 

THINKING: 

• Does not respond to his/her name by age 1; 

• He/she cannot point out where his/her body parts are by 2 

years old; 

• Does not understand simple words and stories by 3 years old; 

• He/she cannot answer simple questions by 4 years old. 

Learn the General Signs and Symptoms

beginning step is to ask your child’s doctor for a developmental 

screening in speech, language, fine and gross motor, hearing, 

and vision. When the developmental screening indicates the need 

for further assessment, ask your child’s doctor for a referral to a 

specialist, which could include a developmental pediatrician, or 

child psychologist or neurologist, to get a full, individual evaluation 

to be conducted. As identifying children with special needs is a very 

tricky task and can be confused with a lot of other issues, it is best 

to seek input from a specialist.
