Cover Up
During the UAL Foundation Diploma Course in Art and Design,
I experimented with different media and I was introduced to
research and experimentation.
Researching Dadaism, I discovered collage and a performance
by Hugo Ball dressed as a bishop, and their anti-establishment/
art theme. This inspired me to produce collages in paper
and Photoshop.
Through research of abuse I discovered Elone a German
artist who pasted sanitary pads around her city with
printed messages, and South African artists Jenny Nijenhuis
and Nondumiso Msimanga, who hung out 3000 pairs of soiled
knickers of victims of rape, both of which were highlighting
sexual abuse.
‘Cover-up’ is a performance highlighting sexual abuse by
minorities within churches, but moreover, it highlights the
‘cover-up’ of these crimes by the Church.
My FMP presents first of all an image of normality within
the Church using mixed media, which follows on into a
performance of exposing abuse and the subsequent cover up
of it.
