MYCELIUMAGICA
The name ‘Myceliumagica’ derived from the
scientific word Mycelium , is the vegetative
part of a fungus act as networking system to
grow mushrooms, and Magica is Latin for
Magic. This collection mainly inspired by
psychedelic psilocybin mushroom. Most significantly,
the effect that psychedelic
psilocybin have on the human brain, inducing
states of interconnectivity, creative openness,
and a capacity to overcome mental
health problems such as anxiety and depres -
sion.Furthermore, the role that mushrooms
play in maintaining large ecosystems on our
planet, acting as a communication network
between different species of plant life is
really fascinating and inspiring. Also, the
silhouette and the texture of different
types of mushrooms can be seen subtly
throughout the collection. The designs also
references aspects of the 1960’s Psychedelia
subculture, including the rich and colourful
clothing of Jimi Hendrix. The prints and
embellishment are partly inspired by Psyche -
delia posters from the 60s, Flower power
counter culture, and the visual effects of
psychedelics.

Think of magic
mushrooms it’s
likely that science
is not the first
thing that springs
to mind. Psychedelic
drugs are more
likely to be associated
with hippies
and the counterculture
of the 1960s
than people in
white lab coats and
clinical trials.
But that might soon
change. Increasingly,
scientists are
looking at whether
mind-altering drugs
might also have the
potential to be
mind-healing.
research
psilocybin
Psilocybin is a chemical
found in magic mushrooms
that causes the user to
experience a sensory overload
of saturated colors
and patterns.

A number of small
studies have found
psychedelics to show
promise in treating
mental health
disorders like depression,
addiction
and post-traumatic
stress disorder,
often where other
treatments have
failed.(bbc.uk)

It is through our senses we form a relationship
with the world. Networking what
we know with what we don’t. In an endless
complex labyrinthian manor we form
understandings. A simple idea roots, and
fractals into a series of interdependent
abstractions to form a shape. This can be
reflected in the shape, texture and growth
pattern of psilocybin mushrooms, and their
assistance in mental and emotional processing.
# 1960s
# PSYCHEDELIA
Psychedelia is the
subculture, originating
in the 1960s,
of people who use
mind altering drugs
such as LSD and psilocybin
(found in
some mushrooms). The
term is also used
to describe a style
of psychedelic artwork
and psychedelic
music. 1960’s icon
Jimi Hendrix, rich
and colourful fashion
style enriched
culture with a new
perspective of free
expression.

FLOWER POWER
print development

distortion
print development
A manipulation of the ordinary, revealing
hidden layers to the otherwise mundane.
Inspired by the influence on culture by
music pioneer Jimi Hendrix. Referring abstractly
to his vibrant fashion and revolutionary
sound.

FLOWER POWER
distortion
The eye being the
viewer of reality
and emotions the
mediator of perception,
Subject
to systematic belief,
a distorted
the default from
which truth is
grappled with.
Here a representation
of perception
as obtained
through psychedelic
intervention
inspired by
and in style of
flower power counter
subculture.

Seen here is the
development of
recurring visual
and contextual
themes combined
to form a display
of mind in open
and connected relationship
with
itself and the
outside world.

A representation
of altered states
of consciousness.
As vision sharpens,
colours brighten,
and perception deepens.
A revelation of
the richness of life
as seen through the
eye of the spirit.
Applying the mushroom
silhouette to skirt and
sleeve designs and integrating
frills and ruffles
to exaggerate details
seen on various mycelium.

Design development showcasing
combination of research topics,
including mushroom silhouettes
and 1960’s style,
more specifically Jimi Hendrix.
binding
technique
Use of a binding technique
to achieve a clean
finish to the fabric
pattern. Sewn together
to create voluminous
waves replicating
the texture and shape
of mushrooms. Seen applied
to various parts
of the garment such as
sleeves, collar, skirt
and main body.

MAKING PROCESS

Making process for a final
line up garment. Using
neoprene bonded with
printed heavy satin as
the main fabric, and
lightweight wool bonded
with cotton satin on the
sleeve. Then using the
binding technique on the
sleeve to achieve outcome
as seen.

IDENTITYY
YMC designer Fraser
Moss, Inspired by his
love and knowledge
of subversive music
and arts, vintage
militaria and work
wear, creates directional
yet timeless
garments slightly
outside the norm of
fashion trends but as
such stand the test
of time.

The 1980’s Blade Runner
captured part of the
new wave/post punk subculture,
and was a staple
for stylistic retro-future
fashionable
film culture. This classic
was then remade, as
style culture that inspired
it and itself influenced
returned for a
new-new wave of modern
popular film and fashion
aesthetic and styling.
For this project,
the focus was on maintaining
the timeless
silhouettes and colour
palette of the original
Blade Runner with
the added richness,
contrast and vibrancy
of the new. Applying
a modernised touch to
retro styling.
