ear the end of last year, the Government of India 

Ntook a call on finishing the regulations on E- 

Pharmacy. Yet, till now, the Rs 3500 crores 

industry, which is expected to rise to Rs. 25000 in the 

next three-four years, presently lies with no regulations. 

This absence of regulation has proliferated the number 

of e-pharmacy stores in the country. Further, the advent 

of technology and penetration of the internet has added 

to the electronic market, where most of the users are 

sitting with smartphones and tablets in their laps and 

enjoying online medicine. The E-Pharmacy industry, 

without regulations, is exploding and the drug industry 

that calls for a sharp precision and safety concerns, thus 

puts forth the question-Will E-pharmacy be a 

dangerous trend in future if not regulated properly? 

The Desideratum 

of Regulations in 

E-Pharmacy Industry

E-Pharmacy comes under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 

1940 and Information Technology Act, 2000. However, 

neither of them interprets the state of online and offline 

regulations. E-Pharmacy stores, thus, may not stand by 

these and can sidestep them. Ultimately, governing 

authorities are finding it challenging to control or 

monitor the selling of drugs via the internet due to the 

absence of available guidelines. Medicine sold without 

regulation can contribute to a drug epidemic, drug 

abuse, habit-forming, misutilization, and persons being 

addicted to drugs. Most particularly, there is no physical 

chemist to safeguard the prescription’s correctness. 

Additionally, the drugs are being traded on the image of 

prescription, rather than the prescription itself. The 

similar names of drugs can put dilemma into the minds 

of users as well as sellers. Moreover, without an 

authenticated prescription, more problems will emerge. 

Proper guidelines should be drawn up and notified to 

monitor the number of medicine sold online. 

Implementing the regulations will make this new 

Pharmacy more accountable. 

E-Pharmacy surely brings advantages with it such as 

money and time saving, cost-effectiveness, possibility of 

24/7 access, increased convenience, easy medicines 

availability, an easy cost comparison of medicines, 

increased consumer information, and information 

exchange, privacy, and fast distribution. However, it 

exhibits some drawbacks too. For the betterment of the 

humankind, the regulatory authorities and the 

Government of India must draw the regulations for 

E-Pharmacy keeping in mind the modern pharmacy 

system and Pharmacists alongside caring for the safety

The students at CHI secure jobs in government 

and private run hospitals, primary health care 

centers, dispensaries and health projects and 

schemes driven by government departments and

opportunity to get placement in UK. In this 

regard, a MOU was signed with the National 

Health Service (NHS), UK. However, students 

need to complete a special training and then only 

they can apply for UK jobs. Currently, the 

institute is training the faculties to train the 

students for this opportunity and comments that 

the work is in progress.

The Robust Curriculum 

The college offers exceptional courses in the field of 

nursing; Basic B.Sc in Nursing, Post Basic B.Sc Nursing 

and M.Sc in Nursing. After completing the required course, 

one can also pursue Ph.D in Nursing. Students can also opt

duration of Basic B.Sc in Nursing is 4 years, Post Basic

Prof. (Dr.) Namdeo Jagannath 

Pawar is the Vice-Chancellor of 

Dr.D.Y.Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune. Born 

in 1957, in a village in Sangli district. 

He obtained his B.Sc. degree 

securing first class with Distinction 

(1974) from Shivaji University, 

Kolhapur. He obtained M.Sc. 

(Geology) with first class in 1980 

from the Pune University and later 

acquired his Ph.D. degree in 

Geology, in 1985, from the Pune 

University. He was recipient of the 

Young Scientist Award instituted by Indian Science 

Congress Association Ranchi in 1984 session for his 

research work. For post-doctoral research, he received 

the prestigious British Council Fellowship for two 

consecutive terms in 1985 and 1987 for carrying out 

research in U.K. Despite hailing from rural based family, 

Dr Pawar has risen rapidly in the academic circles 

through sheer perseverance and patience. He has 

contributed immensely to the fields of teaching and 

research, especially in terms of his specializations in 

Hydrogeology and Environmental Geochemistry.

B.Sc and M.Sc students of nursing and faculty of the 

college carry out various research activities. They are also 

involved in diverse activities like framing statements, 

objectives, and review of literature, journal presentation / 

journal clubs, synopsis & research proposal, which is 

approved by Scientific Committee, Research & Recognition 

Committee & Ethics Committee. Extracurricular activities 

such as Pulse polio, blood donation and National Health 

Day celebration are observed annually to make the society 

aware of the benefits of living a positive life.

The college has produced numerous graduates, who have 

made a name for themselves in the industry. They are 

making the institution proud through their dedication and

The Achievement Cabinet 

Within the span of a decade, the college has achieved a 

healthy reputation among education receivers and providers. 

In the last five years, the University has successfully 

completed and published 59 research publications. Its 

postgraduate students have completed over 155 

dissertations till now. The university grants fund for five 

research projects for faculty every year. Currently, there are 

thirteen projects on-going and five PhD thesis are already 

completed. 

Promoting Nursing Education 

The college is keen to promote nursing education and 

producing the finest graduates in the field of nursing. It is 

also keeping itself in line with the industry trends and 

applications. The already well-resourced infrastructure is 

upgraded with recent changes regularly. This up gradation 

occurs in well-equipped skill laboratories available for 

students including Advance Nursing Laboratory, 

Community Health Nursing Laboratory, Child Health 

Nursing Laboratory, Nutrition Laboratory, Obstetrics & 

Gynecology Laboratory and Science Laboratory. 

Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Nursing has organized Continuing 

Nursing Education for Maharashtra Nursing Council for 

two years, for all the staff nurses and faculties from 

Maharashtra State to promote and enhance practical 

knowledge and to improve their skills. The college is also 

organizing workshops to improve and update with recent 

research activities by doing paper presentation, poster 

presentation in National and International Conferences.

University of Health Sciences. NAAC has accredited the 

college with B+ grade in the second cycle. 

The college boasts of excellent infrastructure, which 

provides the entire student’s needs under one place. It has a 

well-equipped and a comprehensive library, which offers 

students with all the reference material, they require for an 

in-depth understanding of their specific subjects. The

There are separate hostels for boys and girls that are

Education at its Best 

At the institution, scholars can find a framework that keeps 

the entire pharmacy education updated to the present 

scenario at Diploma, UG, and PG level. The college has an 

outstanding educational design and capacity to develop the 

‘workforce’ for the diversity of setting like Community 

pharmacy, Hospital pharmacy, R&D, Academia, Industrial 

production, across varying levels of service and 

competence. 

Initially, at the establishment, the institution used to offer 

the only Diploma in Pharmacy and Bachelor of Pharmacy 

programmes. However, now, the institute covers a wide 

range of courses viz. Master of Pharmacy with 

specialization in Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology & 

Pharmaceutics coupled with Pharm. D and Pharm. D Post 

Baccalaureate programmes. 

The college enjoys the approval of ACITE and Pharmacy 

Council of India. The college is recognized by the

Marking the foundation of a new era of 

education, late S. Narasa Raju 

established the Oxford Educational 

Institutions in the year 1974 under the 

aegis of Children’s Education Society. He 

started his professional journey as a 

schoolteacher and later emerged as one 

of the eminent educationists of the 

country. Since then, The Oxford 

Educational Institutions, existing for over 

four decades in the education arena, 

have evolved as an inspiration for 

knowledge explorers across the world. 

This immense growth has been the direct 

result of the leadership and guidance of 

the S Narasa Raju and S. N. V. L 

Narasimha Raju. It is a living testimony of

Achievement Column 

The institution is proud of its achievements and provides 

facilities for faculty and student research activities. The 

Institute motivates the students to devote their time to

As far as notable achievement go, there are two ongoing 

faculty research works in progress with the financial 

support of Rs.9.5 Lakhs from Rajiv Gandhi University of 

Health Sciences. The college claims that the institution's 

students have achieved university Gold medals and 

individual subject ranks for 2014-2018 academic year . 

Students have successfully obtained first, second, and fifth 

ranks in B.Pharm exam from all over Karnataka. 

Similarly, first, sixth and tenth ranks in Pham D [PB] 

exam were also scored from The Oxford College of 

Pharmacy. Additionally, Rajiv Gandhi University of 

Health Sciences announced 75 individual subject ranks, 

which is a proud moment for the college.

All India Shri Shivaji Memorial 

Society, Pune, established the AISSMS 

College of Pharmacy in 1996. The 

predetermined goal during 

establishment was of becoming a

THE IMPORTANCE OF 

“The good physician treats the disease; the great physician 

treats the patient who has the disease”- William Osler 

he healthcare industry has come a long way and has 

Tevolved through several factors. These factors 

include changes in the practice of medicine and 

technological advancements. Among those, one is changing 

its facet in the healthcare industry. It is patient-oriented 

care, also known as patient-centered care. The idea of such 

oriented care came back in 2007. It got widespread in no 

time because of its positive results in delivering 

personalized care to the patients. 

In patient-centered care, healthcare providers focus on 

keeping the patient at the center of the treatment. They 

place coordinated care and improve access, quality, 

prevention and safety of the patients. In simple words, such 

care focuses on patient’s needs, giving them the help they 

need, when they need, and the way they need. People have 

different values, preferences, etc. that define their different 

outcome. In the same way, the healthcare system must work 

by taking into account these methods. And, their care must 

come from their unique experiences, backgrounds, and 

lifestyles. This personalized care also focuses on educating 

people in the matter of health. It aims at imparting 

knowledge about preventive services, vaccinations, and 

regular examination. As a result, current and future patients 

will be well-informed about their illness. They will also be 

proactive in taking preventative measures in their daily 

lives. Moreover, patients will learn about their treatments 

and will be able to take a decision about the same.

Researchers from Harvard medical school have defined 

eight principles of patient-centered care, which are: 

Respecting Patient’s Values, needs, and Preferences 

Patients must receive care with respect, dignity, and 

sensitivity to their relevant cultures. On the patient's part, 

they should recognize their values and preferences about 

the treatment. They are involved in the decision-making 

process. 

Coordination and Integration of Care 

Patients often express their vulnerability of being powerless 

in illness. The healthcare provider’s job here is to elevate 

such feelings. They can help in the coordination of clinical 

care, support, services, and full-time care. 

Patient Enlightenment 

Patients often reveal their worries and concerns about their 

illness. They confess that they are not aware of the 

treatment. Here, the hospital’s role is to provide complete 

information on status, progress, and prognosis. They should 

also tell them the process of care and the information to 

ease self-healthcare and health promotion. 

Physical Comfort 

The level of physical comfort during treatment can have a 

positive effect on the patient and their experience. The areas 

to be managed here are; pain management, daily assistance,

Emotional Support and Eliminating Fear and Anxiety 

Anxieties can severely affect the patients, their illness and 

can create discomfort for the family members. Healthcare 

providers must pay attention to the anxiety of patients over 

physical status, treatment, and prognosis. They should also 

pay attention to the patient’s anxieties developed over the 

financial aspects of the treatments. 

Family and Friends Involvement 

Here, family and friends’ role is to provide support and 

comfort to improve the patient experience. On the opposite, 

the healthcare provider’s role is to arrange accommodation 

for the family and friends and involve them in the shared 

decision-making process. They should provide support to 

the family members and ask them to do the same for the 

patient. Although patient-centered, the hospitals should also 

care for the family and friend’s needs. 

Continuity and Transition 

After the patient’s discharge, they should be able to care for 

themselves. Their role here is to understand information 

about after-discharge self-care such as medication, physical 

limitations etc. Healthcare providers should coordinate after 

the treatment and provide information on access to clinic, 

social, physical and financial support on a continuity basis. 

Access to Care 

The patients should feel that all the needs they require, after 

the treatment, would be provided to them when needed. 

Healthcare provider’s role here is to help discharged 

patients with easy access to clinics and physician’s offices. 

Not only that, but they should also help them in 

transportation, appointments, and accessibility to 

specialized services. 

Asking the Right Questions 

As mentioned earlier, patient-centered care, focus on the 

health outcomes of patients with their preferences. Hence, 

they themselves should ask the healthcare provider the right 

questions. A healthy treatment requires continues 

communication with the patients. By such, both healthcare 

provider and receiver can make the best possible decision. 

They will also be aware of the possible outcomes. What 

will be the side effects of this treatment? Is it possible 

cancer will reappear later? What is the financial support 

from your hospital for this disease? Answers to such 

questions will break the communication barriers between 

the healthcare provider, its receiver, and family. Also, with a 

current on-going wave of digitization, patients can access 

healthcare options on their computer, cell phones etc. This 

contributes to having more participation coming from a 

well-informed patient. 

Outcome that Matters 

Every patient wishes for a good outcome. They can achieve 

such by identifying which treatment options work best for 

them. They should also study the effectiveness of these 

treatments. The role of caretakers and physicians is to 

provide the patient with the necessary info to take better 

healthcare decisions with the patient’s preference. 

Additionally, this will put the care receivers in front and 

center of the treatment and will answer all their questions. 

The idea of patient-centered care is made for the welfare of 

the patient’s need and requirement. Thus, it is important to 

focus on patients and people’s preferences, which can 

change over the course of time. The challenge here is the 

mixed findings among people as patient-centered care 

means different to different people. As a result, it is more 

important to think about how to put patient-oriented care 

into practice, so as both parties can understand the benefit

Quality health care encompasses care which is accessible, efficient and rational. The care has to be 

able to deliver what is essential in the given setting to help ameliorate disease and restore life and its 

essentials. Most importantly it should not harm and nor try to achieve which is impossible. The 

foremost challenge in India is the excessive population. Access to quality medical education is increasingly 

becoming challenging. Rural and urban divide is phenomenal. Education, awareness and outreach is poor 

and above all the government budget allocation for health is meagre compared to the poor in the country. 

Poor have more health care needs and unfortunately no access. Insecurity and illiteracy are important reasons 

for population explosion. Population growth needs to be curbed. Freebie services should be curtailed for 

more than two issues in a family and awareness of preventive measures such as birth control should be 

effectively implemented. 

Basic services such as birth control, medical termination of pregnancy, delivery, neonatal care and paediatric 

health should be easily and universally available. Regular preventive measures such as immunisations, 

nutritional guidance, physical activity (can be through education of yoga), hygiene practices (personal, 

community and environmental) should be made mandatory and easily accessible and inculcated as essential 

practices. Regular health assessment activities such as screening for cancers, anaemia, mental disorders, 

metabolic diseases should be accessible through simple tools and reinforced with awareness about these to 

nurture a healthy society. 

Health care facilities should have defined roles and limitations well identified. Primary health facilities 

(PHCs) should be run by paramedics and the care be limited to first aid and attending to basic emergency 

needs. The medical officers can run half a day out patient department at the public health centres and 

subcentres and run hospitals at the taluka level. These hospitals can be run on public private partnership

therapies or paramedics offering services to the community should be trained and offered skill enhancement 

programs. 

Private medical college hospitals should partner with the government programs to provide services to the 

poor and in return be granted funds and recognition to do so. This will help in increasing clinical workload 

for better teaching learning practices in medicine. Skill enhancement in medicine can be achieved by 

increased clinical load and this needs to reinforced through such activities. This can also help in better 

research activities for health care quality improvement. World class amenities and facilities for education and 

research of medical students should be insisted upon. 

The government can consider graded charging systems based on economical class of the beneficiary. 

Universal standardised protocols for quality care are a necessity and these should be regularly evolved, 

disseminated and implemented. Much of the government programs are well studied and drafted but seriously 

fail in appropriate implementation. Accountability should be sought from everyone concerned about simple 

mandates such as fumigation od disinfectants, cleaning of trench, clean public lavatories, garbage disposal, 

pollution control etc: The national programs should not only be limited to the government facilities but the 

information should be made easily accessible to private practitioners as 85 % of the medical care is provided 

in the private sector. 

Doctors should be well paid to compensate for the rigours they undergo to learn the subject. The skills of the 

doctor should be appreciated and well compensated. Much of the skilled doctors are moving to corporate 

sector due to better working conditions and revenue generation. Medicos also choose to leave the country for 

better research avenues and facilities for children education and access to super speciality education and 

services. This needs to be made available on our country to avoid skilled community drain. Paramedical 

services should be improvised through skills training and larger accessibility. 

The school curricula should be revised and much stress upon basic health information and knowledge be 

imparted. Serious lack of awareness about nutrition and physical activity has already put the country on the 

edge to blow up into a metabolic diseases volcano and these can have far reaching implications for the 

genetic programming of the generations to come. We as a country have our own special health needs and 

much of indigenous research be supported to evolve our own unique practices to achieve optimum and 

quality health. 

The doctors and health care providers should be protected and respected and attacks on the doctors and 

medical personnel dealt with seriously. Such attacks are a result of ignorance and refusal of acceptance of the 

eventualities, a reflection of serious dearth of knowledge and understanding of life limitations. 

Budget spent on health needs to be quadrupled and provisions be made for essentials universally. Finally, the 

onus also should be on the population at large. With the digital medium everyone should be made 

accountable for his or her health and take responsibility of nurturing health within the individual, family and

Most of the time, the language of pharmacists and nurses

mentioned, both these parties concentrate on serving the

in operations and focus can affect the communication 

between them. A solution can be implemented as 

pharmacists shadowing the workflow of the nurses and 

spending a day in the nurse’s shoes and vice versa. Further 

understanding will assist in tearing down the barriers and 

will take both parties in the same language. Another block 

is the shortage of face-to-face cooperation between these 

two. In acute-care setting, the teams of pharmacists and 

nurses operate on separate floors. As the result, nurses often 

are not acquainted with the workflow of the pharmacy 

department. Hence, lack of shared knowledge of workflow 

or lack of communication influence each other. As each 

party’s expectations may not be the same, it results in no 

rapport between the teams and absence of communication 

between these team players and ultimately the disciplines 

struggles to communicate efficiently. 

Effects on the Patient Care 

Communication challenges within the healthcare 

departments can generate mistrust in patients and delay in 

care. Since patient experience is directly comparable to the 

potential revenue flow into the hospitals, therefore, working 

on the team relationships can be the bottom line. All the 

departments play a direct role in the patient’s care and 

inadequate communication can set up barriers between the 

disciplines. If not managed well, it can affect a patient’s 

health severely. For example, if a nurse calls a replacement 

medication via the electronic medical record, the 

pharmacists send the medicine but it does not reach the 

nurse for an hour or two. Time passes and when the nurse 

confronts the pharmacists, they say that the medication dose 

was verified and sent. Ultimately, the patient’s treatment is 

delayed as they do not receive medication on time. This is 

just a light situation, in the case of surging hospital cases, a 

delay of an hour or two can be severe for the patient’s life. 

Facilities with a multidisciplinary approach to patient care 

are equipped with the finest tools required to tackle the 

communication challenges. Outside of the patient 

communication challenges, healthcare leaders should also 

note the culture of the hospitals as it also plays a prominent 

role in staff and patient satisfaction. 

Improving Communication and Collaboration 

Aligning the objectives of both pharmacist’s and nurse’s 

team can enhance the conversation. Sometimes, the 

pharmacists should be united within the teams. This 

strengthens the relationship between the pharmacists, 

nurses, and other team members alongside identifying 

potential issues and their solutions. Likewise, face-to-face 

interaction can assist in improving communication and 

association. A weak point between the pharmacists and 

nurses is the missed information on medication preparation 

and its distribution. To diminish this, they can set a monthly 

or quarterly meeting on each floor to troubleshoot recurring 

issues and updating the staff on new equipment, new 

medication, and upcoming in-service training. The goal is 

to encourage an open discussion between the two parties so 

that nurse’s emergency should be well understood with the 

balance of pharmacist’s need for patient safety and quality 

assurance. 

Another measure is to promote the merger of location of 

both the departments. Most hospitals follow the traditional 

practice of separating the pharmacy on a different floor, 

away from the care. Decentralizing some portion can also 

carry out the needed interaction between these two

HEALTHCARE 

REFORMS IN INDIA 

With a population of more than 1.3 billion people, 

India is currently a home to a fifth of the 

world’s population. Although India’s 

population growth rate has been showing a decreasing trend 

since more than three decades, population is still increasing 

by 1.2% annually. The UN predicts that India will be 

world’s most populous country by 2024 and by 2030 India 

will become the first political entity to reach the 1.5 billion 

people mark! India is world’s sixth largest economy by 

GDP (nominal) and the third largest by purchasing power 

parity, and yet it spends only about 1.2% of its GDP on 

health sector – among the lowest in the world. 

The constitution of India guarantees free healthcare for all 

its citizens, and yet private healthcare sector has been the 

primary source of health care for 70% and 63% of 

households in urban and rural areas of India respectively. 

58% of India’s hospitals are run by private sector and a 

whopping 81% of doctors serve in private healthcare sector. 

On the other hand public healthcare sector has catered to 

only 18% of total outpatient care and 44% of total inpatient 

care. Clearly the Indian government has failed by far to 

provide the people their right to free quality health care. 

The fact that 57% of households have cited poor quality of 

care offered at government hospitals as the major reason for 

preferring private sector over public sector is a major 

testimonial to the negligent attitude of the government 

towards healthcare reforms. Currently the healthcare system 

of India cannot completely mitigate the needs of Indian 

population. Because the Indian government spends only 

1.2% of its GDP on the health sector, out-of-pocket 

payments make up 75% of the total expenditure on health 

care. 40% of the people that are hospitalized are either 

pushed into lifelong debts or below the poverty line! About 

23% of patients do not have sufficient money to afford 

medical treatment where as 63% of the patients lack regular 

access to necessary medications. In simpler terms, this 

means that the government has been denying a major 

proportion of our population an access to health care 

services. These facts and figures make us contemplate about 

the healthcare policies and reforms introduced by the 

government and question whether their implementation was 

in synergy with the true spirit of their formulation. 

In 2005, the government launched National Rural Health 

Mission (NRHM) with an aim to address the longstanding 

issue of lack of professionals in rural area. The goals of 

NRHM were to provide effective healthcare to rural people. 

For this a compulsory rural service for young doctors was 

instituted in the hopes that they will remain in rural areas. 

In the Twelfth National Plan, Indian government decided to 

expand NRHM to the entire country and called it National 

Health Mission (NHM). In 2013, National Urban Health 

Mission (NUHM) was approved as a sub-mission of NHM. 

NUHM aims to have one Urban Public Health Centre for 

each population of 50,000 and aims to fix current facilities 

and create new ones. Improving sanitation and drinking 

water and reduction of out-of-pocket expenditure for 

treatment are among other aims of NUHM. 

In 2011, a report that was compiled by High Level Expert 

Group (HLEG), which was constituted by the Planning

Commission of India, gave an elaborate financial plan and 

framework for Universal Health Coverage (UHC). The 

HLEG defines UHC as “ensuring equitable access for all 

Indian citizens, resident in any part of the country, 

regardless of income, social status, gender, caste or religion, 

to affordable, accountable, appropriate health services of 

assured quality (promotive, preventive, curative, and 

rehabilitative), as well as public health services addressing 

the wider determinants of health delivered to individuals 

and populations, with the government being guarantor and 

enabler, although not necessarily the only provider, of 

health and related services.” Following were some of the 

key recommendations of the HLEG: 

1. Development of a national health package which would 

offer essential services as a part of citizen entitlement; 

2. No fee of any kind to be charged for healthcare services 

under UHC; 

3. General taxation to be used as principal source of health 

financing; 

4. District hospital networks to be strengthened as care 

delivery and training networks; and 

5. Effective contracting guidelines with checks and 

balances for care provision to the formal private sector. 

However due to some slackening in India’s economic 

growth, UHC was shelved. It was only in 2018 that the 

course of UHC was reset when the government 

‘Aayushman Bharat’ in the national budget. This initiative 

has two components, the first of which has been named 

National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS). The 

government has allocated a fund of INR 20 billion. The 

central government will bear 60% of the costs of NHPS and 

the remaining 40% will be contributed by each state. Under 

NHPS the government plans to provide coverage up to 

about INR 5 lakhs per family per year for secondary and 

tertiary care hospitalization. Second component consists of 

upgradation of 150000 subcentres into Health and Wellness 

Centres (HWCs) across the country. These HWCs will offer 

free basic clinical and preventive services including simple 

diagnostic tests and provide essential generic drugs to all. 

Upon implementation of these aforementioned schemes it is 

obvious that the vacancies will be on the rise. The WHO 

prescribes ideal doctor population ratio of 1:1000. India has 

a doctor population ratio of 0.62:1000, far less than the 

recommended figure. To overcome this dearth of 

physicians, the government has an ambitious plan of one 

medical college in each district of India. Even though the 

government is a long way from achieving this herculean 

task, the progress of government for the same is 

commendable. 

The profession of pharmacy has been an integral part of the 

healthcare systems of many countries since decades, and 

yet it was not until recently that a curriculum for Clinical 

Pharmacists was initiated in India. Till then India was 

essentially missing on an entire segment of clinical 

pharmacy services in its healthcare system, considered to be 

crucial for the provision of quality healthcare. In 2008, a six 

years integrated post-graduation course for the qualification 

PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy) was instituted by the 

Pharmacy Council of India. With initiation of PharmD 

course, Indian healthcare sector will now see a rise in the 

number of clinical pharmacists. Being trained to provide 

services like comprehensive patient counselling, detection 

and management of drug related problems and adverse 

events, therapeutic drug monitoring and provision of cost 

effective therapy, these clinical pharmacists will add a 

previously non-existent segment of clinical pharmacy 

services into the Indian healthcare segment. 

In conclusion, it can be said that although the government 

has now initiated ambitious healthcare reforms, it still needs 

to ensure their success by meticulous planning and robust 

implementation. The government needs to do more to 

utilize other healthcare professionals like physicians from 

Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Siddha and Unani backgrounds, 

Pharmacists and Nurses, but at the same time ensure that 

the quality of healthcare services is not compromised. 

Surely HWC-led comprehensive primary health care and 

NHPS will increase access to health services. For these 

schemes to succeed, the healthcare works force needs to be 

scaled up in both, number and quality. On other hand, 

regulatory systems also need to be strengthened to improve 

quality and accountability by keeping stringent checks on 

the healthcare sector. Although India has committed to 

UHC, it may take years to achieve it in true sense. 

Nonetheless, provision of UHC is a revolutionary reform
