WELLBEING
WELCOME...
For different reasons, people have
had to migrate from one country to
the other usually in search of greener
pastures. Nigeria like many
developing countries have had her
fair share of citizens moving to more
developed countries like the UK and
USA.
For those who have had to pack
up shop to migrate, they do so due to
serious economic hardship, hoping
that the move will guarantee financial
stability and peace of mind. The
political situation, lack of safety, high
crime rate such as kidnapping, and the activities of bandits and
Boko Haram, leading to more hardship for citizens, are all
reasons why many youths are risking the dangerous desert
routes, to escape to industrialized cities in Europe where the
standard of living is high.
While some leave because they feel Nigeria is badly run, it
is ironic to see people of other nationalities who also migrate to
Nigeria not just for economic reasons but for the pure love of
Nigeria.
On our cover today is Ahmed Mazloum, MD Unitop
International Limited. The Lebanese Nigerian who grew up in
Warri and has prospered in it, tells his story and concludes that
he is not ashamed to say Warri made him. Pg 8-10
If the government would do a little more, it would help more
Nigerians find the good that is inherent in this great country and
make us all proud to be “made in Nigeria”.
FASHION
Classic Messenger Bag
As the name implies, this bag has been carried
throughout history by messengers. In modern
times, men are rocking it to give their look a
laid back style that exudes class.
Gone are the days when bags are seen
as a fashion item just for women. The
world has evolved to that point where
a fashionable man is known by his
bag, and how well he can incorporate it
into his style. Men’s bags are not only
fashionable but functional accessories
that are masculine, attractive and ideal
addition to the male wardrobe.
Briefcase
This bag is perfect for your corporate look as
it is designed specifically for the workplace. It
also comes in very conventional colours- black
or brown made of leather.
Duffle Bag
This is an important bag every man must have for that
business trip or weekend getaway. Rather than carry a big
bulky suitcase, this sleek stylish carry-all will get you looking
stylish and smart.
Dopp Kit
This bag is essential
for everyone. It is
designed to be compact, yet
spacious enough to accommodate all your
toiletries and help you travel worry-free.
Tote
This is a simple and
casual bag perfect for
your weekend trip with
family and friends.
The simple design of
the tote bag makes it
versatile and the open
pocket design it often
comes with, makes it
easy for you to pack
and unpack.
BRYAN OKWARA
Clutch
While the classic clutch was associated with
women, fashion has evolved to be more
inclusive and for that, and the clutch is one
of the accessories that benefited from this
evolution. It is not just for show, it can be
useful in securing items like phones, keys, and
credit cards.
Backpack
In recent times, a lot
of men take their work
with them when they’re
on the road, and a
backpack becomes their
office. This bag will help
you with your laptop,
work documents and
compartments to keep
most things from your
desk like your jotter, pen
and water bottle.
joined the Lebanese Military service in 2002 and was
INTERVIEW
You seem to have your hands in many pies. Which
came first and how did the others follow?
Well, yeah; as entrepreneur, you need to seize
every opportunity and make the best out of it. Unitop
International was the first and that is our marine
services arm.
What got you attracted to catering?
It’s very funny to be honest; we were contacted by
a client to renovate a rig for them because the rig was
vandalized during the crisis. When we were about
rounding off the project, the country manger asked if
we knew a good catering company. My brother,
Khoder who is also my partner in Unitop International,
we saw a good opportunity and decided to seize the
moment and float a catering company. We were
awarded the contracted, we employed capable hands
and here we are today a fully, running catering
company.
There is a wide Gulf between catering, logistics
and civil engineering services. How do you move
from one to the other and run them all efficiently?
We have a good structure and every arm of our
business has its own MD that runs the day to day and
report to the shareholders.
What was it like doing business in Warri during
the ethnic crises that rocked that region knowing
you could become a target?
I grew up in Warri and it is home for me. Warri is
also a small city, everyone knows every in a way so it
was not so bad. Also, I didn’t see myself as a target,
but the crisis started effecting the businesses and
then, social life. That was a blow for us.
Did your brief training in the military help?
Yes, it helped. It helped me understand
responsibility at a very young age and to know that
nothing comes easy.
What solutions can you proffer to solve the
problems of the Niger Delta especially your area of
operation?
Warri is the financial capital of Delta state. The
leaders, youth and government need to come together
and understand that a better Warri is a better Delta
State for everyone. We need to provide a safe
environment for investors to come in and invest. This
would provide more jobs, more funds will circulate and
it will mean more taxes for the state.
Warri is lovely city, the people are lovely and
welcoming, but they are angry with the Federal and
government, always taking a lot and giving them back
so little. It’s time the state reaches out to the youth, to
provide better education: with better education comes
better awareness that will lead to a better and safer
Warri. This will bring more investors, more revenue for
the state, better social life for Waffarians, and
ultimately, lead to a healthier and safer environment.
Warri is a gold mine; the possibilities are limitless
with the right leaders in control. Education and security
is the key to a better Delta state.
How did you come to settle in Warri?
My parents moved to Warri when I was 5 years old
and I grew up there,
Coming from Lebanon, how was the first culture
shock for you?
I think you should ask me instead how it was going
to Lebanon for the first time, as all I knew then was the
Nigerian culture.
I was 11 years old when I first visited Lebanon. It
was different, and coming from Warri not even Lagos,
it was a completely new experience for me. I was
not used to the culture. I could not even speak Arabic
very well then and that made it very difficult. I felt out of
place, but my father was very eager for me to know
my roots. So, he insisted we schooled there. As I went
Warri is a gold
mine; the
possibilities
are limitless
with the right
leaders in
control.
to school there, I got hold of the culture but my heart
was in Nigeria. Any time we were visiting Nigeria, I
was always so excited to be coming back as Nigeria
felt like home for me.
My dad passed away when I was 16, so we didn’t
visit Nigeria again. But immediately I clocked 18, I told
my mum I was leaving for Nigeria because according
to the law in Lebanon then, there was compulsory
military training. I was not allowed to leave the country.
So I stayed and served. But immediately I finished the
service, I came back to Nigeria and I’ve been here
ever since.
After your military training, you came back to
Warri. What did you miss most?
I missed my siblings, the family, but I missed my
mother the most and the comfort of being in your
parent house where everything is available. Coming
back to Nigeria at a juvenile and naive age, after a
long time, to stay alone was scary even though I had
my older brother here. He really tried to bridge the
gap, but nothing can measure to your mother’s care
and love. A mother’s love is priceless.
You have had a steady growth in your career, what
has worked for you in that region?
First, I must be thankful to God. Good services
played a big role. Secondly, good business partners,
and thirdly but not lastly, having a good team behind
me, allowed me have enough time to seek for bigger
opportunity without worrying about the company.
You operate in communities in Warri South Area. In
what way has your company helped in addressing
youth restiveness in that community? We try our best,
reaching out to the youth in many ways. We
sponsored the community football team, we employ
the youth and train them, to enable them grow in the
company.
Although you have lived long among the people
there, have you ever envisaged being kidnapped?
It has crossed my mind, so I was careful where I
went and at what time. I am thankful to God it never
happened.
Would it be right to say you were made in Warri?
Proudly! I be Warri pikin o I no even dey hide am sef.
What tribe have you adopted as your own in
Nigeria?
I grew up with the Urhobos and Itsekiris. I guess I
am a little of both.
Between Urhobo and Itsekiri, which do you
speak?
I speak a little Urhobo, the basic greetings and
stuff. For Itsekiri, I can ask how are you?
What are some of your favourite Nigerian foods?
Banga soup and starch, owoh soup and boiled
yam. I also like amala and ewedu, and of course, the
Nigerian jollof rice.
When you are not in Warri, where do you take time
off to be?
Lately, I spend most of my time in Lagos or travel
out of the country.
Should we expect a new addition to the Unitop
Stable soon?
Yes. We strike when it’s hot. We have just started
a new venture called BMS. It’s a marine solution
company that will help with the traffic in Lagos.
Do your beard and tattoo affect how people
perceive you and your business in the corporate
world?
I am me, my beard or tattoos don’t affect my
abilities to deliver my services. I know at first sight, you
won’t see me as the person in the cooperate world.
But once you engage me, your perception would
change.
You featured in the movie, Merry Men. Do you
have plans to venture into entertainment?
I am a business man, any profitable opportunity, I
will jump into it. Entertainment is something I am
looking at; so we would have to wait and see if I can
venture into it fully.
You like wearing traditional outfits unlike other
MDs who wear suites. Why is that?
I like the Nigerian attire. It’s very nice, comfortable
and versatile. Sometimes, I mix with western attire
which looks very good as well.
How To Keep
FASHION
Warm In This
Rainy Season
By - Patricia Uyeh
It is that time of the year when the
heavens open and the rain pours. In
this rainy season, which has been
tagged as the ‘perfect weather for
two’, one is likely to catch a cold if
certain lifestyles are not adhered to.
So it is time to say goodbye to the
sundresses and certain habits as
this long rains call. You would be
needing all you can to stay warm;
from sweater to umbrella to boots, to
raincoats, to long scarves and more
to enjoy the weather.
Here are tips on how to stay warm in
this rainy season:
Always carry an
umbrella or raincoat
It is advisable to carry an umbrella or
raincoat as you step out because, the rain
can pour anytime of the day. By doing so,
you save yourself from catching cold or
ruining your make up, hair or outfit.
Exercise
In this rainy season, you would
likely want to stay cuddled up
under a duvet or blanket. Get
going and fight the cold engaging in
exercise. Take a walk or go jogging (if
it is not raining), or do some work-outs
so you can sweat it out and release some
heat.
Bath with warm water
A cold shower is
definitely not an option
for the rainy days.
Using warm water
to bathe, keeps the
body warm and
protected.
Eat the right foods
Infuse warm beverages, soups or warm
lemons into your menu. Also, eat more
fruits especially those rich in Vitamin C and
vegetables to boost your immunity from cold.
Try insulating
your home
Switch out the insulation in your walls
or ceilings. You should consider closing
your windows but remember to open
them for fresh air on sunny days. You
should also replace light curtains with
thicker curtains.
Prepare your bed
After a long day, a good night sleep is the next
thing. In this rainy season, you would want
your bed to be cozy. Ensure you use thick bed
sheets and duvet to feel warm while asleep.
Wear thick clothes like
coats, jackets, scarves
and the likes
An under-layer, which is a layer of clothing
(such as stockings, leggings, long under
wears etc) that goes under the normal
clothing, would also be ideal.
What Makes Women Horny
The reasons why a woman might want to have
intercourse is quite a mystery hence a number
of men spend time in trying to unlock this web
that might do them good service of running hot
when next they have an encounter with these
ladies. Scientifically, women are just as easy to
make horny as men, the simple reasons babes
find themselves eager to copulate are not that
different from guys.
Below are some of the things that make a
lady horny, some will definitely shock you while
others may not surprise you.
Nothing makes a lady more open to the idea
of having sex than her partner abilities as a
good kisser so indulging in a very passionate
kiss is all it takes to get most ladies in the
mood, this usually start as a peck on the lip and
erupt in to a steamy hot session of fondling of
which if it is powerful enough can lead to love
making. A great kiss is worth its weight in sex.
If you are on the spot at the right moment
after she has out being of circulation due to a
recent breakup or she is feeling aroused,
whatever her reason, you just got yourself
lucky especially if she is into you hence the
eagerness at the prospect of boning you, it can
really be that easy.
If you are great at body language, that is you
communicate with her not just with your words
but with what your mama gave you. Yes, if
body language is done in the right way it will
make a lady wet and ready for intercourse.
You are very good at flattering her as in you
compliment her in a non creepy, this is sure to
make her more relaxed and at ease thereby
letting herself go and enjoying a bedroom romp
that much more promising. If you are adept at
talking about sex without coming off like a
creep, this can definitely inspire any lady to feel
more turned on and hit the hay.
Dirty pillow talks are not necessary with all
the sex related words in it. Great jokes, witty
puns and interesting entendre lines like ‘’ when I
come to your place tonight, I only want to see
you wearing a smile’’ this literally makes some
women wet.
More than good looks, quite a number of
ladies will fall for men who talk smart that is
guys who know what he is speaking as
passionate intellectuals are great turn on for
women.
Give her space to miss you since absence
makes the heart grow fonder and the vagina
hornier, as she will be more likely to be ready
for hot love making when next you meet. If you
are consistent, trustworthy and always in good
mood majority of the time, this will make her
feel safe and calm making her ready to jump
into bed with you.
Right environment matters a lot when it has
to do with feeling sexy, if in some place with a
romantic vibe, be on high alert as the vibe of a
place can work wonders on a woman’s libido.
Be sure to call her when you know that her
day has been stressful, send playful text
messages throughout the week, being there for
her in non sexual way and this will make you
more attractive to her.
Going to the cinema to watch scary movie
are some of the things that will get her blood
pumping and turn her on. Most females go
through periods in their life of intense sexual
exploration, if you happen to get yourself a lady
who is ready to explore, this could be exactly
what will get her press turn on button up.
Last but not the least is porn, a number of
people get horny after watching pornography,
others watch porn in order to get horny. On the
overall, women get horny when they see well
built attractive man but not just the face, the full
packaging.
WITH
Annjay Chioma
By - Rita Okoye
Annjay Chioma is a
young, multi - talented
entrepreneur, who at a
young age, fiercely worked hard
to make a name for herself in the
Nigerian music industry, while
also writing for different media
houses.
Having moved on from
journalism, Annjay has taken her
business to a whole new level,
introducing different beauty and
fashion brands into the Nigerian
market. From Annjay Hair, to
Eyelashes, makeup kits and
more.
Recently, she launched her
latest product, Cura Sunglasses
which comes in different stylish
shapes, colours and sizes.
Here, she shares with Allure her
inspiration, career journey and
success story.
What has Annjay Chioma been up to?
Annjay has been extremely busy working.
I’m a full time Entrepreneur now and singer.
I’m into beauty and fashion business; such
as Brazilian virgin human hair, eyelashes,
sunglasses and many more. I have been doing
this business for years now. Although it has
been quite challenging due to exchange rates,
custom duties etc, but we keep going with God
on our side.
It seems you took a break from your
music career, when next are your fans
hearing from you?
I have produced a lot of songs and still
doing more. I’m not going to quit music, I’ll
keep it flowing because of the passion I have for
it. My fans would hear from me soon.
Since you ventured into fashion and
beauty business, how has it been?
It’s been good and challenging, but thank
God for everything. Whenever I see our clients
wearing Annjay brands, I’m happy and this gives
me courage to push and keep pushing. It has not
been easy but it’s worth it after all.
Why did you chose beauty and fashion
products?
I went into the business because I like it
and it’s part of my profession as a singer and a
model. I started this business before I went into
journalism but not as big as it is now. Annjay
products is international now. We have our
clients all over the world.
The latest Annjay product is Cura Sunglasses.
It is the best of its kind. Cura launched into the
Nigerian market few weeks ago.
You left a journalist for music. Was it
because Journalism was not paying your
bills anymore?
Journalism prepared me for everything
I’m doing today. It pays but the truth is that,
I have other businesses that I’m doing by the
side. Journalism paid my bills but it got to a
point where I could no longer combine both.
My hands were full. So, I stopped working as
a journalist. Many people recognize me as a
journalist and my passion for journalism is still
intact if you ask me.
What should your fans expect from you
musically?
They should expect more cool sounds and
good music from me. I’m not done yet but taking
my time to do things right musically. I’m not in a
rush at all to release unpleasant songs.
You own many businesses, how do you
combine them with music?
I have my staff working for me
because I can’t do it alone. By the
grace of God, I have been able to
combine both and it worked out.
How affordable are your
products?
All our products are affordable.
From our Brazilian virgin human
hair, Annjay 3D Mink Lashes, Hair
shampoo, conditioner, Cura Sun
glasses and more, they are affordable.
Anybody can afford it. I want to also use
this opportunity to say that we sell top
quality products. Quality assurance
is our guarantee.
What inspires you?
God and my self. My
hard work inspires me
a lot. Looking back to
where I was coming
it inspires me to forge
ahead and never be a
failure.
I like beauty products
too and I can spend
my last kobo on it. As a
teenager back then, if I want
to buy any beauty product
and I don’t have enough
money, I’ll go into installment
agreement with them, after payment they
hand over what I paid for to me. I use quality
expensive beauty products on myself and
that’s why we sell good things.
annjay chioma
Do you have a particular beauty
routine?
Yes. I drink water every morning, eat a lot
of fruits to keep my skin radiant and beautiful.
I also exercise regularly to keep fits.
Who are your best Nigerian designers?
I haven’t worked with any of them before,
but that doesn’t mean we not going to work
together in the future.
However I like Lanre Da Silva, Zizi Cardow
and Mai Atafo.
I have international designers whom I wear
their clothes, shoes, bags and perfume.
When it comes to fashion what are your
preferences?
I like skinny dresses. Skinny jeans pants
and sneakers, shorts and shirt. I always want
to look very smart and simple despite being on
the slim side.
How do you like to wear your hair?
Wow! I like long and full hair because it
makes me look bold. I’m comfortable with it.
Short hair is a no-no for me but that doesn’t
mean I won’t wear it once in a while.
Heels or flat?
Please give me heels any time any day. It
makes me stand so comfortably. I can’t do
without heels.
Best fashion item?
My wristwatches. They go with me where
ever I go.
By Odun Ogunbiyi
It’s the middle of the year which means like most of you, I have
been reviewing my 2019 goals and taking stock of the work
still to be done. For the first time however, this time of year is
an important landmark year in my household. It marks the end
of a very significant journey. We are graduating and headed for
secondary school come September. I have been reflecting on the
educational adventure I have shared with my property because it
really is a joint enterprise this undertaking. There have been many
fights over homework and lesson teachers, fun projects in art and
science, and all sorts of drama around costumes for school plays
and ITC project parts. My pride in her is such that my chest feels
like it can’t contain it.
To my fellow parents participating in graduation ceremonies,
looking forward to sending your babies to a new secondary school,
University or the workforce … CONGRATULATIONS, EKU ISE!!!
Aunt
Harriet’s
Last year, I officially joined the ranks
if women in business. I started a small
accessories business called, Aunt Harriet’s.
Aunt Harriet being a name given to me by
my cousins, for my personality who liked
to wear eccentric clothes and accessories
better suited to a countryside dwelling retiree
and who only cares about her dogs and her
knitting. I digress, I had this idea centred
around making practical accessories with
an emphasis on upcycling all the piles of
materials we all have accumulating in our
wardrobes.
Upcycling is trending globally because, like
in other industries, the production of clothes
leads to all sorts of pollution. Every year, an
average of 12 million tons of clothing end up
in landfills.
Aunt Harriets
You will be surprised at the vintage Aso
Oke treasures I found hidden in the back of
wardrobes, and decluttering seemed to be
quite the cathartic process for some.
I enjoy the creative process of bringing
new life to old things and starting a
business has been a steep learning curve.
I have had to learn self-motivation;
creative marketing and I don’t think anyone
will be surprised if I mention the struggle
when dealing with artisans.
The huge positive has been the support I
have gotten from family and friends. There
is no easier way to find out who your tribe
is than when they show up, and show out
for you to support your cause. Thank you,
you know who you are, I love you and
appreciate you.
Song Queen A Pidgin
Opera Invite
The newest theatre in town
This is my second outing to a show at the brand,
spanking new theatre at the Mike Adenuga Alliance
Française Centre. The theatre is gorgeous and intimate
with spacious plush red seating, all with an unobstructed
view of the stage. The performance pieces I have
experienced at the venue thus far, have both been original
and transformative. They have the knack for curating the
engaging and adventurous, a trend I sincerely hope will
continue.
This week, I spent a pleasurable evening watching Song
Queen: A Pidgin Opera by Helen Epega. I had no idea
what to expect; after all, this was an original composition
and the first ever of its kind in the world.
Helen plays the “Hang” which is an instrument in
the talking drums family. Accompanied by Chief Olu
Okeowo’s Gibraltar orchestra, they captivated and moved
the audience with soulful, ethereal music. Worth an
honourable mention was the beautiful visual effects and
graphics accompaniment to the music, as well as the
graceful dancing couple on stage. It was both a visual and
auditory feast of the senses.
Helen has a strong stage presence, a powerful voice,
and she gave an authentic performance that carried
you along with the story. It was all over too soon. The
opera has already been performed in Europe and South
Africa, so catch it while you have the chance. They will be
announcing future performance in Lagos in November.
The Mike Adenuga Alliance Française Centre hosts
summer language programs among other things, in case
you are looking for something to do with the children over
the holidays. All levels of experience are welcome for
French and native Nigerian language classes.
