Local boy collects toys for hospital patients
Inspired by his sister,
Homer Glen youngster
donates to sick children

Watching his newborn sister
fight for her life has imbued a
young boy with an indomitable
spirit of kindness.
Homer Glen’s Tyler Cepkauskas
was 2 when his sister, Emily,
was born with Down syndrome
and a severe heart defect that required
her to have multiple openheart
surgeries, spend months on
life support in the intensive care
unit and frequent Advocate Children’s
Hospital in Oak Lawn.
While she grappled with all the
post-surgery complications, Tyler
moved into the Ronald McDonald
House — the hospital’s guest
house — for four months with his
parents.
“My son just saw how sick his
sister was and unfortunately kind
of grew up in that atmosphere,
being in the children’s hospital
for the past three years,” said
Laurie Cepkauskas, Tyler and
Emily’s mother. “He even saw
his sister celebrate two of her
birthdays in the hospital, and he
celebrated two of his birthdays
there, as well.”
Despite the dire situation, the
boy found solace in the toy closet
at the guest house, and this year
on his 6th birthday, which was
May 30, he decided to bring happiness
into the lives of other children.
“People asked him what he
wanted for his birthday, and he really
didn’t have an answer,” Laurie
said. “So, I suggested asking
people to donate to the hospital.
And his eyes lit up, and he was
like, ‘Yeah, that’s a great idea.’”
Together, they created a wish
list on Amazon and wrote about it
on Laurie’s Facebook page, Emily’s
Heart.
Their story inspired others, and
soon packages began arriving on
their front porch.
“We decided that whatever we
collected, thinking it would just
be a few things, we would donate
to the hospital and the Ronald
McDonald House, because they
gave us so much when Emily
was sick,” she said. “They were
always giving my children toys to
cheer them up.”
Tyler ended up collecting almost
$1,000 worth of toys and
took them to the hospital several
weeks ago.
“I like being the nice kid,” he
said. “It feels good to be nice. I
wanted to make sick kids like
Emily smile.”
The Cepkauskas family remains
grateful to the Homer Glen
community and is trying to continue
to find ways to give back to
others.
“The residents were a big part
of helping us survive those really
hard days by putting together
fundraisers when we were struggling,”
Laurie said. “So, now that
we’re in a position to give back,
we’ve pretty much dedicated our
whole lives to it.”
She said it has been wonderful
watching Tyler get excited about
his generous donation. His sister
may have been born with a weak
heart, but today she is a happy
3-year-old, and Tyler’s love and
generosity serve as a great example
from her big brother.
“He was just so selfless,” Laurie
said. “It was definitely a very, very
proud mother moment for me.”

Homer Glen Village Board
Officials approve gas station plan in midst of resident opposition

The Homer Glen Village
Board approved a plan for
a gas station at the corner
of Gougar Road and 159th
Street off Interstate 355
on June 26 that was met
with some opposition by
residents.
After a proposal to build
a Gas N Wash station was
voted down by the Village
Board in October 2017,
many residents said they
thought the issue was
settled.
Yet, on the recommendation
of the Plan Commission,
which approved
the proposal 5-1 on May
16, a 24-hour Amoco station
and Pride Cafe was
approved by the board this
week on the same margin.
Trustee Sharon Sweas cast
the lone vote to deny the
plan.
Before the issue came
to vote, seven residents
spoke out against the construction
of the station,
which includes bays for
semi-trucks to park and
refuel.
“I’m definitely not opposed
to a gas station going
in on the corner,” said
Shady Lane resident Kathleen
Lauren. “I think most
of my neighbors are in
agreement on that. I’m opposed
to the truck fueling
bays because it’s a definite
risk to the children of District
92.”
The residents argued
that increased semi-truck
traffic on Gougar Road
would create a hazard with
the school buses headed
into Will County School
District 92’s Oak Prairie
Junior High. Residents
noted slippery weather
conditions already create
hazards on the hilly portion
of Gougar near the
school, along which there
are several bus stops.
Trucks are legally prohibited
from being on
Gougar; however, this has
not deterred them from
using the route as they
enter and exit the growing
number of warehouses
and industrial sites in
Lockport. While the plan
includes new signage to
deter trucks from turning
North onto Gougar, residents
are not convinced
this will make a difference.
Resident Tim O’Meara,
who lives at Shady
Lane and Gougar Road,
claimed to have on multiple
occasions counted
between 30 and 40 trucks
per day coming down the
road, many he said travelling
at unsafe speeds.
Another concern posed
by residents beyond the
safety and noise issues
created by an increase of
trucks of Gougar Road
was the possibility the
truckers would use the
station as a resting place
overnight. While the
agreement to develop the
gas station specifies that
trucks are not allowed to
idle or park at the station
overnight, residents expressed
concern that the
rules would be ignored,
especially as truck traffic
is anticipated to increase
drastically with the completion
of Lockport’s Prologis
development.

Prior to the June 26 Village
Board meeting, the
Village hosted an informal
open house seeking
resident input on the new
Comprehensive Plan Update
process. Todd Vanadilok,
principal planner for
Egret & Ox Planning, one
of the firms responsible
for compiling the strategic
plan, was leading the open
house by fielding questions
and comments from
residents.
At the open house in the
Village Hall’s Community
Room, Vanadilok had five
bulletin boards assembled
dealing with five large topics:
transportation, core issues,
community feedback,
potential development areas
and a neighborhoods
map. Each station invited
residents to provide feedback
by placing pins, stickers,
or notes on the boards
in certain ways.
The community feedback
section was supplemented
by input which had
been received at a booth
during Homer Community
Fest. Residents were asked
what words they would use
to describe Homer Glen
and what things they would
like to see in the community.
One of the most common
requests on the board
was for either a public pool
or a children’s splash pad.
These accompanied a variety
of other requests for
things like concerts in the
park or a band shell, more
community parks (especially
in the northwest portion
of the village), more
activities for senior citizens
and activities for families
and children.
“I don’t want to have to
drive to Orland Park every
time my kids want to do
something fun,” one anonymous
comment read.
On the transportation
board, requests were made
to make the community
more walkable, to connect
the existing bike trails to
the I & M Trail and to expand
equestrian paths for
families with horses.
“One of the Plan commissioners
actually made
the suggestion for the
equestrian access, which
could take some work, but
we thought was a good
idea,” Vanadilok said.
While recreational activities
garnered broad support
throughout the comments,
one area of contention
showed up across multiple
boards: the concept of adding
more diversified housing
options.
While numerous comments
called the city “expensive”
and called for
more affordable housing
options to be made available
for single parents or
people on fixed incomes,
others vehemently opposed
such residences.
“More condo, multifamily,
and age in place opportunities
are needed,” read
one card. Another said the
high water rates and taxes
created a “stigma” and that
the village “needs to be
more competitive.”
Still more comments
expressed openness to expanded
housing options, as
long as it retained low density
standards.
Other ideas proposed
by residents included trying
to develop a main
“downtown” area similar
to cities like Naperville
and attempts to draw in
more high-end businesses
or medical or professional
offices. Residents seemed
united in disapproval for
large industrial developments
like those brought in
by Lockport.
“I think our plan really
needs to be updated, and
we need to focus on bringing
businesses in at 143rd
and Bell, not by 159th,”
said Lynn McGary, of the
Heritage Corridor Business
Alliance. “We need to put
businesses where the people
go.”
McGary also noted she
was pleased to see how
much input the Village was
receiving from the public.
While a desire for new
business seemed prevalent
in the comments, there was
also an emphasis from certain
residents to not lose
sight of the Village’s commitment
to nature.
“I would like to see the
plan stay true to our Village
motto: ‘Community
and nature in harmony,’”

like to see a comprehensive
trail system and
high-quality commercial
developments that look attractive
and would stay in
the village.”
Work on the Comprehensive
Plan began in the
past month and is set to
be completed in October
2020. The goal of the plan
is to set long- and shortterm
goals for Village development
over the next 30
years in the areas of economic
development, financial
stability, growth, intergovernmental
partnerships,
recreational amenities and
infrastructure.

commitment to a rural atmosphere,
inclusion and
managed growth density.
“Basically, it’s a document
of strategies and policies
the Village can adopt
to decide which direction
to take developments in,”
Vanadilok said. “It gives
them a stronger leg to stand
on when picking developments
or turning down a
project.”
The Village’s current
plan is from 2005 and in
need of updating in light of
the growth the area is experiencing
in the aftermath of
the 2008 recession.

planned for the coming
months and will be announced
as they come
closer.

LTHS golf outing raises funds for student scholarships

The recent graduates of
Lockport Township High
School volunteered to play
in Beat the Porters to help
raise funds for the foundation
at the event, which
was held June 19 at Prairie
Bluff Golf Course in
Lockport.
“This means a lot to be
able to help out,” John said.
“Our golf coach asked us
to come out today. I’ll be at
one of the holes, and hopefully
I can beat the golfers
and earn some money for
Lockport.”
Both John and Nolan
have about the same GPA,
the same golf score and
both have received scholarships
to attend the University
of St. Francis in
Joliet.
“The St. Francis coach
came out to watch us play
golf and liked us and offered
us both partial scholarships,”
Nolan said.

explained the importance
of the scholarships and
how the golf outing funds
help Lockport Township
High School students.
“This is our biggest
fundraiser; we give out a
lot of scholarships every
year,” Fricilone said. “We
hope to earn $25,000 from
the golf outing. The original
goal of the foundation
is giving scholarships. We
also give mini grants for
teachers.”
If a teacher has a need
for a specific piece of
equipment or something
that affects a lot of students
that is not in the budget
at the school, they can
be given a grant.
The goals of the foundation
are to “acquire materials
and services beyond
those allotted by the school
budget; provide students
and faculty with opportunities
that go beyond what
the district could ordinarily
offer; and promote and
support a positive relationship
between LTHS and its
community.

said. “We always
have the beneficiaries of
the scholarships come and
work the golf outings. The
students get up at dinner
and will let the golfers
know where they’re going
to school and what they’re
going to study. This makes
a connection to the golfers
because they see what they
are giving their money
for.”
One of those is Lockport
graduate Declan Ruane.
Volunteering comes easy
for Ruane, as he volunteers
for his church, St. Dennis.
“I was a table leader for
kids going through confirmation,”
he said. “I led
them in group work. Today,
I’m going out to various
holes on the course
and letting them know of
certain events going on
throughout the day.”
Ruane also supervised
the longest putt for the
event. He is grateful for the
scholarship he received.
“My goal is to become a
surgeon,” Ruane said.
Nolan Weis, of Lockport, gets in some swing time
during the LTHS Foundation 20th annual golf outing. He
and his brother John, former golfers at Lockport High
School, volunteered to Beat the Porter.
The foundation holds
a number of annual fundraising
events, including
Grapes and Grains, Prom
Dress Resale, Wild Fest,
Galactic Glow Bingo and
a 5K Run/Walk.
Rachael Howard is another
LTHS graduate honored
to receive a scholarship
from the foundation.
Howard was at the 15th
hole helping out with the
longest drive competition.
“Receiving the scholarship,
I wanted to give

Police Reports
Digital camera, three purses among items reportedly stolen from vehicle
A digital camera and
three purses reportedly
were stolen June 10 from
a newer model white SUV
parked in front of a residence
on the 13000 block
of W. Beaver Lake Drive.
Deputies spoke with a
witness who said while
driving in the neighborhood
around 3:21 a.m.,
she allegedly saw the
SUV parked, as well as a
male driver and two other
males exiting a vehicle
parked in a driveway. Two
of the males reportedly
held items in their hands,
walked up to the SUV,
then drove off onto Choctaw
Street. The owner of
the vehicle was contacted
and learned the aforementioned
items were stolen,
police said. While deputies
were canvassing the area,
they reportedly found the
owner’s driver’s license,
a pair of sunglasses, one
purse, diapers, a baby
bottle and makeup were all
stolen from the SUV. The
items were found on Lost
Boy Lane, police said.
June 10
• Two males were seen
entering an unlocked vehicle
around 7 a.m. on the
14000 block of S. Stonegate
Drive, police said.
The vehicle allegedly
was ransacked, but nothing
was stolen. Unlocked
vehicles were also reportedly
compromised in the
areas of the 13000 block
of W. Baywood Lane,
14000 block of S. Appaloosa
Lane, 12000 block
of W. Holm Drive, 12000
block of W. Morgan Court
and the 12000 block of W.
Beaver Lake Drive. Involved
parties reportedly
initially did not want to file
police reports.

Lane, police said.

• Karolina Wojtowicz, 27,
of 14641 S. Bell Road in
Homer Glen, was cited for
failure to reduce speed to
avoid an accident at S. Bell
Road and W. 143rd Street,
according to police.
June 5
• Approximately $12,000
worth of tools and equipment
were reportedly stolen
from a construction
site on the 14000 block of
S. Greystone Drive.

raised. Lockport controls
the other three corners
of the intersection and is
supposed to have jurisdiction
over Gougar, though
residents report no police
presence pulling over the
trucks. The Will County
Sheriff’s Office, who are
contracted to police Homer
Glen, could also patrol
the area, though Mayor
George Yukich said a
patrol car could not constantly
be spared to cover
the area.

be there all the time,” Yukich

Yukich’s remarks were
met with anger from the
residents, several of whom
live in Homer Township
and not officially within
the boundaries of Homer
Glen.
As the exchange grew
heated, Yukich acknowledged
that since the Village
has to pay for the
Sheriff’s services, they
were limited on how much
they would do.

of the plan — Kathy Boo,
whose property the gas
station will be built on,
and Rose Reynders, who
owns Tazza Italian Ristorante
in Homer Glen.
“My family has lived
on this property for five
generations,” she said.
“So I’ve seen the changes
in the neighborhood you
are all complaining about.
I was at the meetings opposing
the warehouses
when Lockport first
proposed putting them
in,” she noted. “I’m not
thrilled about some the
changes I’ll have to make
down the line, either, but
it’s called progress, and it
has to happen one way or
another.”
Despite the residents’
concerns, most of the
board members’ discussion
around the project
was related to the logistics
and aesthetics of sign
placement, which the developer
had asked for several
variances on.
Ultimately, the board
decided to approved the
project while tabling approval
on the signage
variances until alternative
options could be discussed
and more information
was available.
Sweas offered some
concern for the issues the
residents’ raised, as well
as for pollution, and proposed
that the driveway
onto Gougar be eliminated
or re-configured to prevent
right-hand turns onto the
roadway. This proposal,
however, was dismissed.
According to Trustee
Ruben Pazmino, who
spoke to The Homer Horizon
the day after the meeting,
the idea was deemed
impractical because it
would “create traffic congestion
at the intersection
and prevent cars from
legally turning onto the
road.”
When questioned by
the public why the Gas N
Wash station was turned
away, but the Amoco station
was not facing similar
scrutiny, Yukich said it
was because the owner of
the Gas N Wash was demanding
a video gaming
license, which the Village
was not willing to provide.
Pazmino added it was
the better option for the
Village financially.
“This was going to happen
one way or another,”
Pazmino said. “Lockport
controls the other three
corners of the intersection,
and I have it firsthand that
Kathy Boo would annex
into Lockport if this proposal
didn’t go through,
and they would allow the
construction.
“There wasn’t a lot we
could do, so why give the
tax revenue to Lockport if
we could get it into Homer?”
The gas station and restaurant
will be built on
just over five acres of the
Boo property, which totals
over 45 acres. While
the sign ordinances were
not permitted, in granting
approval for the plan, the
board did approve a variance
for a reduced setback
from the street of 30.5
feet instead of 40 feet and
permission for both an
outdoor seating area and
propane canister storage
alongside the building.
During the meeting,
Boo stated that the business
is expected to draw
in up to $500,000 in revenue
annually.
Pazmino and fellow
Trustee Ann Holtz both
said they would look into
working with Will County
to increase penalties for
trucks on Gougar Road
and patrols in the area.
“I think there should
be more cooperation
with Lockport in policing
the area, and I think
we should look into paying
Will County more to
increase patrols on the
road,” Holtz said.
Holtz also said she had
asked Chief Building Official
Joe Baber to look
into a resident’s proposal
to “build an arch north of
the gas station that would
allow buses but not trucks
through.”
“Lockport would need
to do the same at the north
end of Gougar by the
school,” she said. “But we
need to do something to
make it work, because the
truck traffic isn’t going
anywhere.”

Release of sports schedules brings great anticipation

As a sports fan, it is
always fun seeing
when your team’s
schedule comes out for the
next season.
Though one may not
make much of it at the
time, since the season
is a ways off, it is cool
to check out when key
matchups will be, along
with the season opener,
any stretches of home or
road games in the schedule
and more. It is often
a step along the way that
gets a fan pumped for that
upcoming year.
At the high school level,
I am sure it is a thrill
for the student-athletes to
see when they will play
their rivalry games and
get a better feel for how
the season will play out.
Recently, the Illinois
High School Association
released all the schedules
for the high school
football teams in the
state. On Page 31 of this
issue, we printed those
schedules for Lockport
Township High School
and Providence Catholic
High School, giving a bit
of a preview for each.
It may feel like a long
ways off, but we are
already at the Fourth
of July, or the sort of
unofficial/official halfway
point of summer break,
and these schedules begin
in less than two months.
Before you know it, I’m
sure we will be printing
our annual Football
Preview Guide for more
in-depth coverage of the
teams.
But the release of their
schedules brings with
them particular intrigue
this year.
For the Porters, it is a
chance to survey the road
ahead while trying to
make strides from an 0-9
2018 under new coach
George Czart, who has
brought a lot of excitement
to the program. For
the Celtics, a conference
merger means a new
division and a considerable
amount of new
opponents in 2019, and it
will be interesting to see
what new rivalries are
formed and how exactly
everything shakes out
with that.
No matter who is on
the schedule, the preparation
for each game
and week remains the
same for the players and
coaches involved. But
for the fans, the schedule
release can be a time
of excitement and that
glorious preseason time
to think about all the
fun times that could be
ahead.

Fun Wizz brings plenty of laughs to Homer library

Typically, one would
be discouraged to “clown
around” in a library.
In this case, even the librarians
were getting in on
the fun.
On the morning of
Thursday, June 27, excited
children in red noses
were dancing, moving and
even juggling — making it
seem like one was walking
into “the big ring” rather
than the Homer Township
Public Library. While the
children acted like circusready
pros, it was actually
part of the “Learn to be
a Clown” Wacky Circus
Show starring Fun Wizz as
the ringleader.
The event was featured
as part of the library’s
summer reading programming
It’s Showtime at
Your Library.
For nearly 40 years, Fun
Wizz, also known as Brian
Wismer, has been clowning
across the Chicagoland
area and beyond, even performing
internationally.
Wismer was an original
member of the Chicagoland
Clown Team and
honed his improvisational
skills through classes at
The Second City before
being one of only 50 applicants
accepted into the
Ringling Bros. and Barnum
& Bailey Clown College
in Venice, Florida.
Upon completion, Fun
Wizz was one of the few
chosen to join the Ringling
Brothers Barnum and
Bailey Circus’s Gold Unit
in Japan.
Since his tour with the
Gold Unit, Wismer returned
to Chicago and
pursued his other passion:
sports medicine and physical
education. After completing
his education at the
University of Chicago in
sports medicine, Wismer
founded a physical therapy
practice in Northbrook, as
well as his own entertainment
company.
Since then, he has combined
those two passions
into a fun and entertaining
show with an emphasis on
movement, fitness, team
building and self-esteem to
all audiences.
“I love getting kids moving
and having fun,” Wismer
explained. “And when
I say kids, I mean kids of all
ages, I don’t care how old
they are. We should all be
able to step out of our comfort
zone, get to know other
people, be creative and see
what happens next at any
age.”
Wismer enjoys performing
at places like libraries
because he knows how important
movement can be
to learning.
“There’s so much research
stating that movement
only emphasizes and
increases the ability to absorb
what you’ve read, so
the combination is fabulous,”
Wismer said.
Jody Olivieri, manager
of youth services, had first
met Wismer when he had
done a physical fitness
challenge at the library, but
after talking to him, she
had discovered his clowning
persona and wanted to
invite Fun Wizz.
With the theme of the
summer’s programming tying
in perfectly, she could
not wait to bring him in.
“He brings so much energy
and enthusiasm, and
we’re so happy to have
events like this that bring
our patrons come into the
library,” Olivieri said.

Show was an exciting way
to spend their Thursday
morning. Daniel recently
became an older brother,
so to help his mom out, his
“Gigi” has been finding fun
outings for him during the
day, with many of them being
at the library.
“I love that the library
has fun events like this to
bring children in,” Grinnell
said. “They’re free, and
they’re just enough time to
keep them entertained. It’s
a good thing for everyone.”
The two both loved the
juggling, with Kathy even
saying she was excited to
practice more.
Jennifer Skelley is a frequent
visitor to the library
and was eager to bring her
4-year-old son, David, to
learn to be a clown. Skelley
studies the calendar looking
for events to take her
son to, and she loves that it
is full of things for children
to do during the summer.
Between the dancing and
the balloons, David had a
blast.
“It was fun to dance and
blow balloons,” David
said. “I really want to do
this again.”
One of the Skelley family’s
favorite things about
the library’s programming
is how it exposes children
to books in a fun and engaging
way.
“[The library] has so
many cool events to bring
kids in, and the way that
they tie books in to help
expose them makes a huge
difference. Reading in our
family is important,” Skelley
said.
Keeping children engaged
in reading during
the summer is especially
important to fight the
“summer slide,” according
to Olivieri. With that in

Veterans eat for free
from 6:30-8 a.m. on the
last Monday of every
month at Gina’s Teardrop
Cafe in New Lenox. It has
been that way for approximately
two years.
“When my father passed
and we were at the cemetery,
everybody there
volunteers, and it just gave
me the inspiration that we
need to do something,”
owner Gina Buck said.
“It’s a big turnout. And
their stories are unreal.
It has turned into a great
event that we do.”
Gina said it is nice to
see new faces show up
for the veterans breakfast
who then continue to come
back and eventually become
regulars.
The cafe also welcomes
in an art class from Martino
Junior High School
in New Lenox to paint the
front windows three times
a year to coincide with
the different seasons and
holidays. It also does food
drives during Thanksgiving
and toy drives during
the Christmas season.
“Anytime we can chip
in, we donate,” Buck said.
“We really do try to give
back. Whenever we can
help somebody, we definitely
try to.”
Buck admitted that because
of the location of the
cafe — on the far west side
of town — some people
may not know it is there,
because they do not have
to drive that way. But she
loves where it is located
And the cafe will celebrate
six years in November.
When it first opened,
only the main dining area
existed, but a year-and-ahalf
into things, it outgrew
that space.
Luckily, the space next
door was occupied by
Kevin Molloy Insurance,
which moved to the other
end of the mall to help with
Teardrop’s expansion.
Gina’s Teardrop Cafe
serves both breakfast and
lunch. It also caters food
for different events, a
service that has become
more popular as of late.
Teardrop may even host a
wedding later in the summer.
On the regular menu,
the breakfast tacos ($8) are
popular, as are the biscuits
and gravy ($7 full order,
$5 half, can be topped with
two eggs any style for $1).
The menu also has some
“hidden gems” in their
specials section. Special
#3 — which is one egg any
style, a cup of fruit, a side
of avocado and a piece of
toast ($8) — has become a
popular item, as well.
“When we did the menu
revision four months ago
to update it, that is one
that gets a lot of orders,”
said Gina’s husband and
co-owner, Ken. “We try to
stay current.”
Gina said if they think
of something good, they
will put it up as a special,
instead of regularly updating
the menu.
“We try to stay with the
trends,” she said. “Everybody’s
eating avocado.”

The Teardop Skillet
($14) has also become
a top-seller for the cafe,
which is the Meat Lover
Skillet (sausage, bacon,
ham, onions, green peppers,
cheddar and mozzarella
cheese) topping with
homemade country gravy
and biscuits.
The cafe also sells alcohol
now, with drinks like
Bloody Mary’s and mimosas
on offer.
“It’s something new for
us that has really taken
off,” Gina said. “It’s another
thing that helps keep
us current, because people
are doing that.”
As far as what the future
holds for Gina’s Teardrop
Cafe, Ken wants to focus
on each years as it comes,
while continuing to grow
the veterans breakfast,
community work and the
catering side of the business.
“For the military breakfast,
we’ve had customers
come in and see that and
want to contribute,” Ken

with Jenna Cotter
Jenna Cotter is entering
her senior year at
Lockport Township. She
is a 6-foot-4 center on the
basketball team.
What are your
expectations for the
upcoming season?
With how we’ve been
working together at the
DeKalb and Morris Shootouts,
I think that will carry
over, and we will work
together really well in the
regular season. We are going
to be pretty good.
How did you start
playing basketball?
I didn’t want to play
basketball when I was little.
But it was my brother,
Jacob, who convinced me
that I was going to be tall
and there won’t be many
girls taller than me. So, I
went to a basketball camp
in the third grade at my
school, Milne Grove, and
I’ve loved it ever since.
What is it like being
6-foot-4?
I love it. I love being
how tall I am. A lot of
people don’t like the attention
of being tall, but I
love it.
Did you play volleyball
or any other sports?
Yes, I played volleyball
through eighth grade
at Kelvin Grove. I also
played soccer for six years
and softball for two years
when I was younger. But
when I got to high school,
I only wanted to focus on
one sport, and that was
basketball.
What is it about the
game of basketball
that makes it the
sport for you?
I’m very competitive.
I think basketball is more
competitive than volleyball
and a lot faster pace.
So, that’s why I chose it.
What do you do to
pump yourself up
before a game?
I just like to talk to my
teammates and make sure
that they are ready for the
game. That’s what really
helps me. I’m not really
into listening to any music
or pregame rituals.
What would your
spirit animal be?
Probably a giraffe.
That’s because they’re tall,
like me.
What have you
learned from Lockport
girls basketball coach
Dan Kelly?
Besides basketball, he
focuses on making us
better people. He knows
your potential and pushed
you. He says we all have
core values and to follow
them.
Are you planning to
play basketball next

Yes. Right now I’m finding
what different colleges
fit me and visiting different
places. I originally said I
wanted to go far away, but
now it doesn’t matter. You
have to be committed, and
no matter where you play,
it’s not like you’re going to
be home for the weekend,
anyway. I want to major in
business.
What is the best thing
about being an athlete
at Lockport?
I think it’s just encouraging
because people go to
your games and ask about
how you’ve done. A lot of
teachers do that, and it’s
encouraging that people
care about it.

Porters girls basketball readies for upcoming season

The turnaround for the
Lockport Township girls
basketball program started
a couple of years ago when
the Porters won a regional
championship and completed
back-to-back winning
seasons for the first
time in a long time.

On the surface, it would
be easy to say that last season’s
9-22 record was a big
setback. But with many of
the players returning from
that team and an excellent
showing in some of
the summer shootouts, the
expectations will be high
when the Porters take the
court in November.
Take the Morris Shootout,
one of the top summer
shootouts in the state.
Lockport competed there
on June 18 and 19 and
placed third overall in the
32-team tournament.
“We were competing at
a much higher level than
we had in the past,” Lockport
coach Dan Kelly said.

“Certainly, the highest
in my six years here. We
lost to Highland [Illinois],
which beat Joliet West for
the title, in the semifinals.
We beat a very good Oswego
team in the quarterfinals
and ended up taking third.”
While summer success
does not always transfer
over to the regular season,
there is still a lot of reason
for optimism. The Porters
graduated four seniors from
last year, but eight players
return that have varsity
experience. Three of them,
center Jenna Cotter, along
with guards Sawyer Hollatz
and Abby Papageorge,
are returning seniors.
“We have some new
players, and we’re all
learning to play with each
other,” Papageorge said of
the summer league. “We
like working as a team together.
Even after the summer
workouts are over, we
are going to get together to
make sure we don’t lose
what we have.”
Cotter agreed the summer
is a time to get to know
new teammates and how
everyone can perform.
“Everyone is working
really hard to get bigger,
faster and stronger,” Cotter
Athlete of the Month
said. “We’re just practicing
and learning each other’s
styles.”
Earlier in the summer, the
Porters were at the DeKalb
Shootout, which ended on
June 8. There, they lost to
eventual tourney champion
Sycamore in pool play.
In pool play at the Morris
Shootout, Lockport defeated
Ottawa, Romeoville
and Tinley Park. Earlier in
the summer, they toppled
Joliet West, which they lost
to by the score of 58-45 in
the regular season last year.
While last season was
a struggle at times, there
were highlights. Of their
22 losses, 14 of them were
to teams with 18 or more
wins, with the Porters being
competitive in many of
them. They had big wins
over a 20-win Willowbrook
team [50-48 on Nov. 21 at
the Willowbrook Thanksgiving
Tournament] and
the first win against Lincoln-Way
East [62-53 on
Jan. 24] in over 13 years.
Freshmen Cheri Michalek
and Elizabeth Sochacki
made big contributions
as guards last year and
will be looked at to make
more. Returning juniors
Sydney Furr and Elena
Knebel will also be counted
on in post positions.
Lockport will open the
season on Nov. 19 by hosting
Romeoville.

with merger of two conferences

The Providence football schedule
for the 2019 season will look notably
different than in years past.
The Illinois High School Association
released football schedules on
June 26, including the full slate of
games for the Celtics. Beginning this
upcoming campaign, Providence will
see the result of the merger between
the Chicago Catholic League and
East Suburban Catholic Conference.
The Celtics hope the new alignments
will bring favorable results,
as the team looks to improve on last
year’s 5-5 mark that saw them end the
season with a 35-0 loss at Washington
in the opening round of the playoffs.
The new CCL/ESCC merger has
created six four-team divisions —
Blue, Green, Orange, Purple, Red
and White. Aptly, the Celtics will be
in the Green Division, which also
features St. Rita, Montini and Niles
Notre Dame. It will be anything but a
cakewalk for Provi, with that trio going
a combined 28-11 last year and
all being ranked in the state’s Top 30
to end the 2018 season, according to
MaxPreps.com.
Noticeably absent from the schedule
is longtime rival Mt. Carmel,
which has been put in the Blue Division
with no crossover game in Year
1 of the new alignments.
The Celtics will have five home
contests in 2019, including three in
a row in the middle of the season,
though they open on the road on

After that, highlights include a
Sept. 13 Week 3 mathchup with
Brother Rice before a couple new opponents
in Niles Notre Dame Week
4 and Carmel Week 5. A divisional
matchup with St. Rita — whom the
Celtics got by 12-7 last year — occurs
Oct. 4 in Week 6. A neutral site
game with DePaul College Prep is
Week 7, and the final home game
happens Week 8 when St. Laurence
travels Oct. 18 to New Lenox.
Finally, in what could be a big regular-season
finale in the Green Division,
the Celtics head to Lombard
to square off with Montini, a 27-3
victor against Provi in a late-season
matchup the year prior.

After an 0-9 season last year,
LTHS is looking for a fresh start
under new coach George Czart,
who was hired earlier this year
to help turn around the program.
The Porters open with fourstraight
home games to start
the season, beginning Aug. 30
against the Grandville Bulldogs
from Michigan. Six of Lockport’s
nine games will be at
home, which will be double the
amount of contests they had on
their home turf a year ago.
A highlight of the 2019 schedule
will be the Porters facing off
against rival Sandburg for the
first time since 2015 in Week 5
when they travel to Orland Park.
A battle with Wheaton Warrenville
South will happen in Week
2 for the second-straight year
after the Porters played them on
the road in 2018.
Other big SouthWest Suburban
Conference games for the
Porters will include playing Lincoln-Way
Central at home Sept.
13, Bolingbrook at home Oct.
4 and a rematch with perennial
power Lincoln-Way East on Oct.
11 in Frankfort in the third to
last game of the season. Lincoln
Way East’s rising senior AJ Henning,
a receiver/running back, is
the top recruit in Illinois in the
Class of 2020 by 247 Sports and
announced his decision to commit
to Michigan the same day
schedules were released.
Lockport takes on Andrew
Oct. 18 in Tinley Park in Week
8, hoping to avenge a close 15-7
loss to the T-Bolts from last
year. The team then closes out
the schedule Oct. 25 at home
against Stagg Week 9.
