What’s on, Clubs, Eating out,
Trades Listings and much more...
Recently the TV series Game of
Thrones ended after eight seasons.
Although I have never seen the series,
I understand it was shown in 207
countries and very popular. I also read
that a lot of time, effort and work was
put into its production. I understand
Game of Thrones was filmed in ten
countries; it used 12,986 extras and
two thousand crew members in
Northern Ireland alone; it included
three thousand pyrotechnic effects,
fifty miles of fabric for costumes, and
more than twenty-four thousand
pounds of silicone for prosthetics;
wigs for one of the lead characters
required two months of testing and
seven prototypes. The series received
174 award nominations and won sixtythree
times.
If the production of a TV series like
Games of Thrones strived for
professional excellence, how much
more does God deserve excellence
from us? No one in Christian history
was more passionately committed to
personal excellence than the Apostle
Paul. He encouraged excellence in
our thoughts: “Whatever is true,
whatever is honourable, whatever is
just, whatever is pure, whatever is
lovely, whatever is commendable, if
there is any excellence, if there is
anything worthy of praise, think about
these things” (Philippians 4:8). He
encouraged excellence in our words:
“Let no corrupting talk come out of
your mouths, but only such as is good
for building up, as fits the occasion,
that it may give grace to those who
hear” (Ephesians 4:29). He
encouraged excellence in our actions:
“Pursue righteousness, godliness,
faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness”
(1 Timothy 6:11). What a difference it
would make if we followed that advice
in our homes, families and workplace!
Do our lives set an example of
personal excellence in what we do and
say? Although we are human, we
recognise that we all make mistakes. I
know I do. However personal
excellence isn't about being perfect or
always being right. It is about
recognising our need of God's love
and help.
In God's wisdom He created us with a
free will. This means that God has
given us the ability to choose and
decide what we do and how we will
live. While God is a Holy God, all
knowing and all powerful He doesn't
arrange our lives for us. God doesn't
treat us as puppets by pulling the
strings of our lives. The challenge then
is that we can decide whether we want
to seek personal excellence or just do
our own thing. To seek personal
excellence involves trust and
dependence on God. As an old
gospel hymn says: Trust and obey,
For there’s no other way to be happy
in Jesus But to trust and obey.” God,
through the Holy Spirit can work in and
through us when we recognise our
need and seek Him through faith. The
Christian message of Jesus' death and
resurrection for us is good news as it
brings forgiveness of sin, new life and
hope. While we may not be nominated
for an award, we can live a life of
excellence when we have God at the
centre of our lives, making our lives
attractive as well as challenging.
I was pleased to host a round
table event in the library at Elgin
recently where I invited members
of the various community councils
from across Moray. This allowed
us to come together and share
concerns and topical issues both
here in Moray and at Westminster.
It was good to hear their views and I was delighted
that we were able to discuss a number of issues
around the table. I’ve received some positive
feedback on this engagement and I’m hopeful this
will become a more frequent event.
Summer is here, I’m looking forward to being back
in Moray for the recess and meeting up with
constituents from across the area during my
forthcoming surgery tour. People can come along
without an appointment and raise any issues or
concerns with me. Watch out for adverts in the
local press with details of specific times and
venues.
Finally, by the time this article is published, the
leadership election of the Conservative Party will be
nearing a conclusion. I can guarantee that whoever
is successful and becomes the next Prime Minister
will be getting regular updates from me about the
issues that are concerning people here in Moray.
As always, I can be contacted on
douglas.ross.mp@parliament.uk or on 01309
679253 or at 63 High Street, Forres IV36 1PB.
In recent months, we have seen a
number of wildfires take hold in Moray
and I have seen first-hand the
blackened landscapes and the extent of
the damage caused.
I know that the increasing frequency of
these fires locally is causing real
concern in our rural communities, given the impact
wildfires have on local landscapes, wildlife and
habitats, as well as the potential threat they pose to
infrastructure and homes.
These recent fires were brought under control thanks
to a monumental effort from local fire fighters, who
worked alongside the police, gamekeepers, estate
workers and other community volunteers, who rallied
around to extinguish the fires under challenging
conditions.
I have had discussions with Police Scotland and the
Fire and Rescue Service about the need to be better
prepared for wildfires, given that we expect to have
more long, dry spells of weather in the future.
Ringing and related matters
I am licensed to catch and ring
all birds but for specially
protected birds such as golden
eagles I apply for and am
granted what we call a Schedule
1 licence. The Schedule 1
licence ensures that only
individuals with the required
skills and experience are
allowed to disturb these breeding
birds. My licence for 2019
arrived yesterday. I feel it an
honour and a privilege to be
allowed to spend a short time
in the eyrie and it never
becomes a chore.
I have ringed 140 golden
eagles so far. Before I enter
the nest I ensure that I can do
so safely – that is for me and
the nest and contents. If I have
left it too late and the chick is
very large I will withdraw to
avoid causing premature
fledging. If a tricky abseil is
involved I like to have somebody
with me. It is a long time
since University of London
Mountaineering Society trips
to North Wales but I have been
on two rope access courses in
recent years so I think I know
what I’m doing. I have the
right equipment and, above all,
an idea of what is doable and
when to walk away.
Special care needs to be taken
at a ‘walk-in’ nest as there is
usually a sharp drop below
and the margin of error is
narrow. Golden eagles don’t
nest at such high altitudes as
many would believe. Being
early nesters sites at high
levels would be dangerously
exposed to wind and often
above the snow line at a time
when laying commences.
If the chick is 4 to 5 weeks old
there will be brown feathers
replacing the white down. If
the chick is still downy it will be
too small to ring. The ring is
an adult size, 26 mm diameter,
and if the chick is small the
ring would slip over the foot so
cannot be ringed. If the chick
is emaciated and unlikely to

survive I will not ring or
disturb it. Unfortunately there
is sometimes a dead chick in
the nest – or nothing at all. If
there are eggs left in July
these will not be going to
hatch. I can remove these
and have them professionally
examined for reasons for not
hatching as well as shell
thickness and presence of
toxins picked up from the
environment.
Live your Best Life…
Welcome to the Fashion page,
where I share my top clothing
style tips with you all.
With love and style.
Amanda
xx
Stylist In Training...
‘Athleisure is a trend in fashion in which clothing designed for workouts and other athletic activities is worn in other
settings, such as at the workplace, at school, or at other casual or social occasions.’ wikipedia.
I never thought I would EVER wear trainers unless inside
a gym (and that dear readers can be somewhat a rare
occasion) . If I couldn’t wear heels then flat ballet pumps
all the way - they didn’t feel very exciting but at least I
could walk. Then one day I discovered sneakers, and
suddenly sportswear took on a new meaning. I have
since been on a quest to see how many ways I can
incorporate these comfy little gems into my wardrobe.
Some call it ‘Sports Luxe’ some ‘Athleisure’ - either way
they make me feel I can walk that extra mile.
‘Athleisure’ (as described above) is an ever growing and
evolving trend and allows you to bridge the gap
between smart/casual. One of my favourite looks is to
wear a blazer, slogan tee, skinnies and my silver sequin
trainers. I’ve even been known to wear track pants to a
very important audition but because my hair was done,
the blazer was structured AND I had my accessories on I
still felt smart, polished and together. Not to mention
no throbbing feet! In the end this is the key to true style
- to feel like you and know you can walk in a room with
an easy confidence.
My Top 5 Tips for Trainer Style...
1. Pick a pair that suit your feet.
2. Go for Sparkle or Glitter for weekend/lunch dates
3. Leather styles are generally better to keep feet fresh
(or wear trainer socks)
4. Pick a colour that will work with all your wardrobe,
or are neutral enough to tone in.
5. Pair with everything! From dresses to skirts,
suits to jumpsuits, rest assured you can so rock this...
The most important rule is to stay true to who you are and have FUN!
By Onjali Q Rauf
This is the story about how one ordinary
are full of empathy for Ahmet, a boy that
class). Through their sensitivity, curiosity,
ingenuity, bravery and innocent niceness,
they make a massive impact on Ahmet’s
wider world. There’s a lovely lack of
stereotyping on gender and backstory for the narrator,
which adds to the message of not judging people before
you know them.
Water, Wells and Wellness
by Highland Historian
The superstitions, beliefs and
traditions of our communities
are full of intrigue and
mystery; as well as truths that
may only become apparent
once the stories have been
understood. This
phenomenal
importance in the storytelling
tradition is certainly not
confined to the west. In north
east communities, there is a
noteworthy similarity in
folkways.
If we truly want to understand
our culture, the stories are
integral to our education. The
writing of histories must not be
ignorant of the significance of
these traditions and what their
belief systems are based on.
There is far more truth in
folklore than it ever appears
upon the first hearing of a
simple folk tale.
The fact that this is so often
closely linked with the sea,
agriculture and the power of
nature is not surprising. The
most prominent pockets of
what I.F. . Grant called “well
worship” in her book Highland
Folk Ways, appear to exist in
areas which incoming
Christian monks struggled to
amend the peoples’
longer-held beliefs. The north
east, like some pockets of the
west, was not populated by
Christian monks until later in
the development of Scottish
Christianity and so, older
beliefs flourished and many
still remain in some form.
The coastal communities of
the north east, the west coast
and islands are bound
together in this cultural
development due to the
so-called “superstitions” which
emanated from living from the
sea or from poor arable land.
Christian monks eventually
stopped trying to dissuade
these older beliefs and healing
pools named after saints
began to emerge. Examples of
this are St Fillan’s pool in the
River Earn near Crieff f and St
Maelrubha’s well on Skye and
the water off f Eilean
Maolruibhe in Loch Maree.
This renaming in honour of
Christian figures gave
legitimacy to the water-beliefs
already present. The use of
these waters for curing mental
illness by shock immersion is
not entirely different ferent from the
‘modern’
uses of cold water
swimming today.
The power of water in belief
systems still exists to this day

with the carrying of coffins by
the community over the first
running water before being
transported to the grave site.
This tradition has been
known in Portree in recent
years and appears to exist in
varying forms in other areas.
This mixing of the nature
traditions that predate
Christianity and the formality
of Christianity have created
traditions which are almost
entirely unique to the
communities they developed
in.
Healing wells feature
prominently across the
Highland region. Particularly
noteworthy are the clootie
wells close to Inverness and
the traditions of healing wells
at Annat in T
orridon and on
the Isle of Skye. It is a
common theme that the ill
would drink three times from
the well or spring and circle it
three times “sunwise”
(clockwise) for the healing to
have permanence. In the
T
orridon example, some
folklorists maintain that this
included for many hundreds
of years, the drinking of the
spring water from a human
skull! This tradition has been
recorded several times, most
recently by an author who
claims to have witnessed it in
recent years.
In the North East, healing
wells were certainly revered
and respected in a similar
way
. In 1842, a well at Oxhill
in Rathven was being used
regularly for its healing
properties. This well,
however, was not the
community’s preference as
their belief in another well in
the parish had outlived the
well itself. When the older
well was filled in by a farm
tenant, mothers from Buckie
brought their children and,
finding the well gone,
scooped a pool with their
hands in the earth. Once full
of water, the children bathed
in the pool before being
carried home, asleep, on
their mothers’
backs. In 1890,
healing wells were still in use
at Strathdon and Corgarff
where offerings ferings were still
being found.
NAIRN RIVER INVASIVE SPECIES PROJECT
The banks, woodland and open
spaces along the River Nairn are
an integral part of our town, a
natural asset that t adds to locals’
quality of life. Riverside Park,
near the Jubilee Bridge is a
well-used but sometimes
overlooked space that connects
residential areas to the town
centre.
Green Hive and many other
community groups want to see
a flourishing riverside
environment that provides a
saf
e space to play and explore
nature, for all ages.
And now, users of Riverside Park
are coming together to draw
attention to this forgotten spot.
Community groups such as
Green Hive, Nairn PLA
Y and the
Forres and Nairn Welfare League
are joining forces with Nairn’s
Community Planning
Partnership to develop their
interest est in enhancing the
Riverside.
The Nairn and Nairnshire
Community Planning
Partnership (NNCPP) brings the
police, NHS, education, local
council and voluntary groups
together to enhance and
develop our community’s health
and wellbeing. The NNCPP’s
Places and Spaces subgroup is
currently focused on Riverside
Park, and will later turn to
Tradespark.
“We seek to make our open
spaces accessible and useable,
and are bringing groups
together to develop this space
for the good of the community”.
Cllr T
Spaces Group Chair.
As custodians of the Riverside
football pitch and changing
rooms, Forres and Nairn Welfare
League portion part of their
income to maintaining these
important t facilities. In the future
they plan to extend the
changing room area at either
side, giving room to store
equipment that will facilitate
maintenance e of the football
park.
“We are celebrating our 20th
anniversary this year and we are
committed to the area long
term. In the past, we have
teamed up with other local
sports clubs to provide support
Nairnshire Colourful, the
member of Places and Spaces”.
Kat Woods, Nairn PLA
Young people that use the skate
park are also joining efforts to
improve the area.
"I think it's a great idea for
skaters and members of the
Nairn community to come
together and express the
interests we have in the
riverside area … the many of us
who use the skatepark f
or its
intended purposes feel that it is
overlooked. So this would be a
great opportunity to show that
there is a community based
around the skatepark … and
convince organisations, groups
and the public that t Nairn
skatepark k and the surrounding
area is somewhere for
improvement. ”
Green Hive’s Nairn River Invasive
Species Project is working to
reduce e species such as Giant
Hogweed from our riverbanks,
creating a more biodiverse and
healthy riverside. As part of this
project we are planning a Family
Day at Riverside Park, inviting
members of the public to help
clear Himalayan an Balsam plants
from the woodland area along
the riverside. The other Places
and Spaces members are keen
to join in, making this a
collective e family event.
The event, on Saturday 20th
July from 12pm, will be a day
of family activities for our
community to enjoy our
riverside environment. Green
Hive will have opportunities to
Attendees will be encouraged
to give thoughts and hopes for
the park’s development, so
TheIsle of Harris Gibson
by Tommy Cummins of Discount Suit Company, London, UK.
"A simple classic that t really proves its point, though the devil is certainly in the detail"
detail.
INGREDIENTS:
60ml Isle of Harris Gin
10ml of Dolin Vermouth de Chambéry (Dry)
10ml of Juniper and Sea Kelp infused vinegar.
Pickling onions
METHODOLOGY:
1. Pour 400ml of White Distilled Vinegar
into a Kilner jar.
2. Add a handful of Greek Juniper berries
plus a handful and a pinch of dried Kelp.
3. Add pickling onions (e.g. Silverskin, Pearl),
seal jar and leave to infuse for 10 days.
4. Add ice to an already chilled mixing glass.
5. Pour in the gin, vermouth and vinegar
before mixing with a teardrop bar spoon.
6. Julep strain into a chilled vintage
coupette glass.
7. Garnish with two of the pickled onions.
Tommy Cummins is the bar manager of Discount Suit Company in London, UK. This independent cocktail bar is situated
moments from Spitalfields Market and focuses on great cocktails made with traditional methods and forgotten classic
recipes. All of this soundtracked by a big love for all things Soul - especially Northern.
“ A simple classic that really proves its point, though the devil is certainly in the detail. We infused the onions with the
juniper berries and sea kelp to drive home the maritime idyll and to represent both the gin ( juniper berries), and the island
(kelp). Also, Isle Of Harris Gin stands with its head held high against the pickling liquor. It’s great to try something different
in the gin world and Isle of Harris are doing that. While everyone is doing heavy juniper London Dry styles, they are
keeping to their heritage of the island. This is shown in that t lovely maritime smell, with hints of pine needles and dried
oranges. Looking forward to seeing what you release next."
