Dear Neighbour,
Food waste, a subject not far from many of
our minds. Coming under the spotlight
recently were the largest main players in
the high street coffee industry, namely
Starbucks, Caffe Nero and Costa.
This is an industry worth £8bn a year of
which little, if any, is paid in UK
corporation tax. CT is currently 19%,
Starbucks paid only 2.8% in 2018. Caffe
Nero has paid nothing for 12 years.
In such a cash-rich environment one would
hope that a degree of philanthropy might
be aimed at the homeless people who look
to large stores for their end-of-day unsold
food. Sadly not the case. Five million
pounds' worth is disposed of in dumpsters.
Starbucks staff insist company policy is
not only to dump food in bins, but also to
open the packaging and spoil the contents
by spraying hand sanitizer on it. Caffe
Nero bin all of their unsold food. Costa say
they do not encourage staff to donate.
On the other side of the coin, Greggs and
Pret stores admirably donate 100% of
unsold products to food charities daily. If
they can do it why can't they all?
France levies fines on organisations who
don't give surplus food away. The UK
could do with following suit. France
certainly shows us up on this matter.
Coffee for Craig is a charity for homeless
in Salford, Manchester. It provides 80-90
hot meals each night. Risha Lancaster and
her partner Hendrix Lancaster started the
charity in 2007 after Risha's brother died
after living on the streets for 4 years.
Next time you buy one of these "pay
through the nose" coffees think of the
greedy profits being made by the same
companies who turn their backs on the
starving homeless. Stay safe everyone.
