Dear Neighbour,<br />
Food waste, a subject not far from many of<br />
our minds. Coming under the spotlight<br />
recently were the largest main players in<br />
the high street coffee industry, namely<br />
Starbucks, Caffe Nero and Costa.<br />
This is an industry worth £8bn a year of<br />
which little, if any, is paid in UK<br />
corporation tax. CT is currently 19%,<br />
Starbucks paid only 2.8% in 2018. Caffe<br />
Nero has paid nothing <strong>for</strong> 12 years.<br />
In such a cash-rich environment one would<br />
hope that a degree of philanthropy might<br />
be aimed at the homeless people who look<br />
to large stores <strong>for</strong> their end-of-day unsold<br />
food. Sadly not the case. Five million<br />
pounds' worth is disposed of in dumpsters.<br />
Starbucks staff insist company policy is<br />
not only to dump food in bins, but also to<br />
open the packaging and spoil the contents<br />
by spraying hand sanitizer on it. Caffe<br />
Nero bin all of their unsold food. Costa say<br />
they do not encourage staff to donate.<br />
On the other side of the coin, Greggs and<br />
Pret stores admirably donate 100% of<br />
unsold products to food charities daily. If<br />
they can do it why can't they all?<br />
France levies fines on organisations who<br />
don't give surplus food away. The UK<br />
could do with following suit. France<br />
certainly shows us up on this matter.<br />
Coffee <strong>for</strong> Craig is a charity <strong>for</strong> homeless<br />
in Sal<strong>for</strong>d, Manchester. It provides 80-90<br />
hot meals each night. Risha Lancaster and<br />
her partner Hendrix Lancaster started the<br />
charity in 2007 after Risha's brother died<br />
after living on the streets <strong>for</strong> 4 years.<br />
Next time you buy one of these "pay<br />
through the nose" coffees think of the<br />
greedy profits being made by the same<br />
companies who turn their backs on the<br />
starving homeless. Stay safe everyone.<br />
