Just north of the island, the town of Ubud is known as the center for
traditional crafts and dances. This traditional town is surrounded by
terraced rice paddies, dotted with Hindu temples and shrines, are
among Bali's most famous landscapes. Ancient holy sites include
the intricately carved Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave) and Gunung Kawi,
with its rock-cut shrines. The Bali Vegan Festival and the Ubud
Writers & Readers Festival are both happening this October.
