The Rotary Family of District 2451-Egypt,
Welcome to Rotary Year 2019-2020
District Governor July Newsletter
herif
Today is the official commencement of our time
together in the 2019-2020 Rotary year. It is the day
that we accept taking over the responsibility of
leadership from those who held office before us. If
we achieved and succeed, we will leave office, one
year from now, with clubs that are larger, stronger,
more efficient, and more committed to the values of
Rotary.
There is a reason, why the month of July doesn’t
have a theme in the Rotary calendar. July is a
special month; for every Rotarian, for every club,
for every District and for Rotary International. It is
the month of handing over responsibilities and
putting things together, taking the first step towards
our plan of hard work, achievements and success.
Wal
The importance of teamwork is the way to
productive service. Rotary leadership is not an
individual, all of our district leaders are expected to
start this Rotary year as one team. We share the
same goals, mission & vision.
I am sure that by the end of this Rotary year, we
will be proud of our hard work and connecting the
world to implement projects that Really Made a
lasting change.
I am sure that by the end of this Rotary year, we
will be proud of our hard work and connecting the
world to implement projects that Really Made a
lasting change.
Our Rotary theme this year is “Rotary Connects the
World”. Rotarians who have the biggest impact are
the ones who serve best, use their resources, have
experience, and large networks and connections.
They’re the ones who had experiences that
motivated them to serve.
Be proud this year to belong to Team 7, the team
that will be Aloha Team by the end of the year.
Share with us the memory of 75 years of the
existence United Nations. Celebrate the presence
the first African Institute in Egypt.
The moment is here. The time is now. We will
begin this journey together.
District 2451 – Egypt; Rotarians, Rotaractors,
Interactors and Alumni, together we will connect the
world for a better future.
Thank you.
Thank you note

Dear PDG. Abdul Hamid El Awa,
Thank you for a Rotary year full of
achievements and pride.
Sharing, caring, & inspiration was the key for
the success achieved.
Your Rotary year theme, “Be the Inspiration”,
was really reflected in the team work spirit to
build clubs who recognizes the meaning &
impact of their service, and who are inspired
to achieve with maximum speed.
Your stunning success in the Floating Hospital
Project and the Renovation of El Amir Village
in Luxor made a difference in lives of many
and assured that Rotary can really change the
World.
Making sure to engage members and recruit
new members was highly reflected specially in
your support in chartering 8 new clubs in the
district in the year of your leadership.
Looking forward to your active participation
and support to Team 7 this Rotary year.
Thank You Again
WE ARE TEAM 7………..Why ?
According to spiritual healers, the
number 7 is a highly spiritual number that
is associated with intuition, mysticism,
inner wisdom, and a deep inward
knowing. According to that same
tradition, the number 7 combines the
hardworking number 4 with the mystical
and creative number 3. As a result, angel
number 7 carries a meaning that both
practical and mystical. In ancient Egypt,
the number 7 was considered a God
T E A M
number, this is true today as it was back
then. The Pharaoh usually ordered
things in groups of multiples of 7. There
are Seven Heavens and 7 Lands
according to Quranic verses, and Biblical
texts. And no matter where you look,
there's always a 7; rainbow colors, seas,
continents, wonders of the ancient world
– even 7Up!
So, as our DG Sherief Wally comes into
th
office as our 7 governor, team seven will
be the core support team at both the
District and Club levels. The selection
process for Rotary Egypt Team 7
included parameters that relied on
reliability, self-motivation, organization,
professional and Rotary experience. It
also considered special factors such as
action-oriented Rotarians, with
collaborative and innovative initiative
capabilities.
The new July message
MARK Maloney our new president
Happy Rotary New Year 2019-2020!
Dear fellow Rotarians and membersof the family of
Rotary,
an island. The people heading to Taipei might be
talking to one another, but they were not talking to
the people heading to Cairo or Lagos.
I love to travel! I even enjoy the mundane process
of getting from here to there. But last year, my wife,
Gay, and I had one of those experiences that would
strain the optimism of even the most cheerful
traveler. We found ourselves with six hours to wait,
at an airport where we were not scheduled to be,
on a day we had not planned still to be traveling,
having woken up that morning at a hotel unknown
to us the night before. It was one of those days.
As we waited at John F. Kennedy International
Airport in New York City, Gay and I took a walk to
people watch. We went from one end of the
terminal to the other and back, looking at every
gate, every destination, every group of people
waiting for their flights.
As we waited at John F. Kennedy International
Airport in New York City, Gay and I took a walk to
people watch. We went from one end of the
terminal to the other and back, looking at every
gate, every destination, every group of people
waiting for their flights.
As we started our walk, I thought: "All these
different people, all these different countries, all in
one place. This is like Rotary!" But as we walked
past gate after gate, I realized something. It was
not like Rotary at all. Because everyone in that river
was heading for an island. And every island stayed
Contrast that with Rotary. Rotary allows us to
connect with one another, in deep and meaningful
ways, across our differences. It connects us with
people we would never otherwise have met, who
are more like us than we ever could have known. It
connects us with our communities, to professional
opportunities, and to the people who need our help.
Connection is what makes the experience of Rotary
so very different from walking along that concourse
at JFK Airport. In Rotary, none of us is an island. All
of us are in Rotary together, whoever we are,
wherever we are from, whatever language we
speak or traditions we follow. We are all connected
to one another — part of our communities and
members not only of our clubs, but also of the
global community to which we all belong.
This connection is what lies at the heart of the
Rotary experience. It is what brings us to Rotary. It
is why we stay. Please join your fellow Rotarians on
this journey as Rotary Connects the World.
RIPN Holger Knaack's Acceptance Remarks
at Hamburg Convention - 5 June 2019
of Rotaract, and I will be proud to continue this
progress. When I work with Rotaract, I am always
impressed with their ability to multitask, to devote
themselves to challenging work, and to just get
things done. I see no difference between a Rotarian
and a Rotaractor. To me, we are all members of
Rotary International, and we work together and use
our own strengths and abilities to serve our
organization.
Thank you for the warm reception.
As most of you know, if there had not been a health
problem, it would have been Past Director Sushil
Gupta standing before you today. It took great
strength and courage for Sushil to step away from
his dream. That same strength will aid him well in
his battle back to good health. We all need to keep
Sushil in our thoughts and prayers.
As for me, I can barely contain both the shock and
the excitement of being your president-nominee.
My wife, Susanne, shares that excitement and
commitment to serving you.
Our lives have been instantly changed by that
recent telephone call asking if I would serve as
your president in 2020-21. The answer was, without
hesitation, an emphatic “Yes!” Since that moment,
we have not stopped running.
We have had our first orientation at world
headquarters, meetings with President Barry and
President-elect Mark, and many staff meetings.
Many times, I have had to stop and pause to reflect
on the reality of what is happening. I cannot
express to you how happy and excited we are.
I might have had a late start; however, I promise
you that, with Susanne's support, I will be ready to
serve as your president.
I can also assure you that in the coming year I will
work with Mark, and the president to follow me, as
a team, to lead our organization to further success.
Rotary expects our governors, governors-elect, and
governors-nominee to work together as a team,
and that is exactly how we will also lead.
I want to thank the German Rotarians for their
donations of money and time that made this
convention possible, and for the hospitality they
have shown Rotarians from around the world that
has made it such a success.
I am humbled and honoured to accept the
nomination to serve as the first German president
of this great organization in the 2020-21 Rotary
year.
The honour is not mine. It belongs to my Rotary
club, my district, my fellow German Rotarians, the
amazing Rotaractors, and the Rotary staff that I
have had the pleasure of serving with through the
years. All of you made this possible, and I am
grateful. I could spend the rest of the evening
telling you stories about our Youth Exchange and
Rotaract experiences, but now is not a time for
such stories or the sharing of plans and ideas.
However, I will share with you that I strongly believe
that Rotary also has to be fun. We need fellowship
and must emphasize our core values.
Again, I cannot begin to express my gratitude for
this honour, and I feel a tremendous responsibility
to make the most of it. Rotary has been one of the
great joys of my life. I look forward to sharing that
joy with all of you as your president-nominee.
naa
Holger
President Barry and President-elect Mark have
done amazing work this past year raising the profile
Attending a Rotary convention always feels like
coming home to me, but it is especially true this
year. It was not long ago that I made a humble
suggestion in a handwritten note that Hamburg
would make a great site for a future Rotary
Convention, and now we are here!
Danke.
Sherif Waly .. The genuine Rotarian

Our District Governor Sherif Waly, is dynamic; and
enjoys an excellent capability of addressing and
engaging a large audience. He knows how to hold a
room full to the brim with people from every part of
D2451 in his grasp. His secret weapon is that he keeps
the conversa on flowing, he keeps it light and simple;
o e n b y r e c o g n i z i n g t h e c h a l l e n g e , a n d
acknowledging it, triggering sincere reac ons from his
audience coupled with a sense of relief that “he
knows”. That's the special bond that not only
mo vates but also creates a sense of belonging and
more importantly it formulates stakeholders.
Dr. Sherif Waly, began his Rotary career in Rotaract.
He's been through many posi ons and is part of the
founda on team of more than one club. His
experience means that he is acutely aware of every
challenge Rotarians face in Egypt, especially young
members.
herif
Wal
In Rotary tradi on, the DG represents the Rotary
Interna onal President; and in keeping with said
prac ce DG Sherif Waly, began by relaying the RIPE's vision for the coming year and revealing his
th
theme; of unity, connec ons, and the crea on of las ng change. DG Waly will be our 7 District
Governor; and hence 7 will be taking center stage in Rotary Egypt, this year. The road to team 7 began
back in 2012 when Egypt broke away from D2450 becoming D2451, Rotary Egypt.
The mission of the year 2019/2020 is to put the people of Rotary District 2451-Egypt at the core of its
ac on. His plan will work on building the skills and capaci es of the members (Rotarians, Rotaractors,
Interactors and Alumni), and through them serve our community, towards targeted, innova ve,
inclusive and par cipatory ac on. His pledge is that the District will support clubs in ensuring their
projects are addressing core gaps and needs of the community; aligning with the Rotary belief that
service is at the core of our organiza on and where the ac on takes place.
To that end, we will leverage on Rotary Community Corps, for partnerships which are essen al for
reliable sustainability. Strategic partnerships bring in diversity going hand in hand with innova on.
Recognizing the Rotary Founda on as an essen al part in our Rotary partnership, Finally,
communica on is the key to sharing. The aim here is to communicate Rotary's ac ons in Egypt,
thereby assuring its image as a reputable, serious, service organiza on in our country, having a history
of outstanding projects that have embi ered the lives of people in every part of our na on.
Secretaries, by PDG Dr. Assem Abdel Razek and PDG Dr. Ahmed Saada, respectively.
The PETS ended with a word by DG Abdulhamid El Awa and were held in Alexandria on Friday March 15, 2019 and
on in Cairo on Saturday March 16, 2019.
But PETS isn't just about training., it is a day when Clubs send in their nominated leaders for the coming year, who
in turn have a chance to meet each other and get a day with the incoming district governor to align strategies
moving forward and to hear his or her objectives for the year ahead. Members experience PETS in different ways,
on the one hand, it is a time to align as a District, but on the other hand, friendships are forged during that long hard
day.

Why the Rotary year begins 1 July
Ever wonder why 1 July is the beginning of
the Rotary year? Initially, our conventions
played a key role in determining the start
date of our fiscal and administrative year.
Rotary’s first fiscal year began the day
after the first convention ended, on 18
August 1910. The 1911-12 fiscal year also
related to the convention, beginning with
the first day of the 1911 convention on 21
August.
Attendees at Rotary’s first convention in
Chicago in 1910. Rotary’s first fiscal year
began the day after the convention
ended.
The next August, the Board of Directors
ordered an audit of the International
Association of Rotary Clubs’ finances. The
auditors recommended that the
organization end its fiscal year on 30 June
to give the secretary and treasurer time to
prepare a financial statement for the
convention and board, and to determine
the proper number of club delegates to the
convention.
changes to the schedule for reporting club
membership and payments. Even The
Rotarian changed its volume numbering
system to correspond to the fiscal year
(beginning with Volume 5, No. 1, in July
1914).
Rotary continued to hold its annual
conventions in July or August until 1917.
Delegates to the 1916 event in Cincinnati,
Ohio, USA, approved a resolution to hold
future conventions in June, mainly
because of the heat in cities where most of
them occurred. The next one was held 17-
21 June in Atlanta, Georgia.
The term “Rotary year” has been used to
signify Rotary's annual administrative
period since at least 1913. An article in
The Rotarian that July noted, “The Rotary
year that is rapidly drawing to a close has
been signalized by several highly
successful joint meetings of Clubs that are
so situated as to assemble together easily
and conveniently.”
ince the executive committee’s decision in
1913, the end of the Rotary year has
remained 30 June.
The executive committee agreed and, in
April 1913, designated 30 June as the end
of the fiscal year. This also allowed for
