VALENCIAN MAN
WINS IGLESIAS
PATERNITY CASE
A Valencia judge has ruled
that legendary Spanish singer
Julio Iglesias is the father of 43
year old Javier Sanchez Santos,
possibly bringing some form of
conclusion to a legal matter that
has been underway for 20 years.
Iglesias, king of the crooners in
the 1970s or father of pop star
Enrique depending on your age,
has always denied that he had an
affair with Maria Edite, mother
of Javier. However the judge said
“based on biological evidence
by Simon Russell
there was contact between Ms
Edite and the defendant”. Ms
Edite said that this “contact”
took place in a party venue in
July 1975 where Mr Iglesias
was proven to be at that time. Mr
Sanchez said he was very happy
with the outcome after a long and
bitter battle. However his alleged
father still has the right of appeal
within 20 days before the case can
be officially closed.
SPANISH national
newspaper “El Pais” has
printed some footage
and information it has
obtained relating to
when Julian Assange
was claiming asylum in
the Ecuadorian embassy
in London for six years.
Apparently he was
under 24 hour a day
audiovisual surveillance,
most of this carried out
by Simon Russell
by Spanish security
firm Undercover
Global. This included
privileged meeting
with the Wikileaks
founders lawyers, which
a security expert was
tasked with noting down
every detail of.
Assange was
obsessed with being
spied on and in crucial
meetings, such as
with his legal team,
he took steps to avoid
hidden cameras and
microphones. However
due to the amount of
equipment these were
always unsuccessful
and it is clear he did
not realise he was being
monitored at all times.
Four men, including a
reporter and computer
arrested in Alicante this
May for an extortion
did not pay them €3
million.

FRIDAY 12TH JULY 2019
3
BRITISH VICTIMS NAMED
THE TWO British
tourists who died last week
after falling from a seafront
wall at Punta Prima beach
on the Orihuela Costa, have
been named.
Daniel Mee, 25, and
Jayden Dolman, 20,
came from Bridgwater in
Somerset, with a third man,
who witnessed the incident,
by Alex Trelinski
as they took a selfie, also
coming from the West
Country.
Mr Mee died at the scene
last week on Wednesday
evening, while his friend
was airlifted to Alicante
General Hospital, but died
the following day
BRITISH MAN DIES FROM
BENIDORM BALCONY FALL
AN unnamed British
national has died after
falling from a Benidorm
hotel earlier this week,
despite a recent warning
campaign from the
UK Foreign Office
about the dangers of
partying on spaces
such as balconies. The
tragedy occurred at the
Levante Club in the
Rincon de Loix area, an
accommodation popular
with the British but
not one that generally
welcomes groups such
Finance Feature
provided by...
by Simon Russell
as stag and hen parties.
Reports say that the
dead man was in a
restricted part of the
hotel and somehow fell
onto the glass atrium
below, possibly after an
altercation. At this stage,
only limited details have
been released while the
deceased’s next of kin
are informed. Police in
the town has opened an
investigation into the
incident.
Why is Spain so different?
According to FCA data, 84% of
UK based financial advisors can
class themselves as ‘independent’.
An independent advisor can
search the whole market for the
best solution for their clients,
rather than being restricted to a
small selection of ‘off the shelf’
funds. Being independent is by far
the most popular option in the UK,
because, on the whole, it is the best
for the end client, and surely that
should be your advisor’s priority?
So why is Spain so different?
Many firms in Spain mistakenly
refer to themselves as independent,
but absolutely are not. I can
identify in seconds exactly which
firm set up a particular portfolio,
because it will contain the same
3-4 funds they use with every
client across their entire group.
This is really problematic for
me. When a Chorus advisor builds
a client portfolio, we have the
ability to search the whole market.
We look to diversify your portfolio
across different asset classes and
different geographic regions. We
build shortlists from thousands
of available funds, compare track
records, the management team,
independent star ratings from
companies like Morning Star and
Trustnet. We work closely with
prestigious companies like The
Prudential, Rathbones, Schroders,
Investec, and place our clients
in the most optimal portfolio
available.
I simply couldn’t work under
the conditions of a restricted
advisor. They often only have
access to say one Technology
fund, one Global Equity fund, one
Emerging Markets funds, one Asia
fund etc and regardless of how that
fund performs against other funds
in its class, they simply lump their
entire client base into it.
I think you all know by now,
from reading my articles for
many years, why these choices
are made. Yes, they have deals
with certain funds houses, and
yes, those fund houses pay them
commission to put all their clients
with them, raising the cost to you
and lowering the quality of your
investment. Is this legal? In the
UK, no, in Spain… yes.
Does a company being FCA
regulated protect you from that
practise? Absolutely not. In the
UK it would, but offshore business
is not protected by FCA regulation
unless you are specifically
choosing FCA regulated funds
for your clients, and that is not
something these companies are
doing. They are choosing the
offshore version of these funds,
because regardless of how much
they mention the FCA in their
advertising, it simply does not
apply to you if you are a Spanish
resident having offshore funds
recommended – I bet you didn’t
know that!?
I know we go over the same
points week after week, month
after month, year after year, but
all we’re trying to do at Chorus is
encourage you, the public, to
question the advice you’re being
given to ensure you are in the
best available plan. Chorus will
continue to promise you, very
publicly, and open to as much
scrutiny as possible, that when
we build your portfolio, we will
only use FCA regulated funds
from the World’s leading fund
houses, and not build a portfolio
that contains any fund that pays us
a commission. All we can hope, is
that one day, other firms will join
us, and make the same promise.
FRIDAY 12TH JULY 2019
A National Police officer
who was on holiday in New
York has been praised after
he stopped an attack on an
NYPD officer this week.
Ruben Castillo was walking
through Times Square
watching the Pride Day
parade when he saw the
by Simon Russell
officer in an argument with
a man whose unleashed
dog had been worrying
people in the crowd. The
man suddenly head-butted
the agent, who fell to the
ground. Before he could
attack him again Ruben
stepped in and managed to
stop him, then between him
and the injured officer they
handcuffed the assailant.
Because of the Pride Day
event hundreds of thousands
of people had gathered, and
several thousand of these
broke into applause at the
Valencian agents selfless
actions. Ruben said that
his biggest fear during the
assault was the attacker
grabbing the policeman’s
gun while he was on the
ground, especially with the
amount of people around.
MOTHER´S PROTEST
A BRITISH-based woman
whose son disappeared when his
Angelo Jurado-Marmolejo,
Rafael Jurado-Cabello did not
bring him back to his Bristol
home in March.
Karol Marmolejo said she
organised the march in the town
where her son was born as there
has been no information in the
past four months.
by Alex Trelinski
Police say Mr Jurado-Cabello
is wanted on suspicion of child
abduction.
Avon and Somerset Police said
it was “actively pursuing several
lines of inquiry” and was working
with the National Crime Agency
and Spanish police.
Ms Marmoleio said she hoped
the silent march through Puente
Genil last Saturday would “show
people that we don’t know
anything about Angelo”.
MADRID BAN BACK
by Alex Trelinski
A JUDGE has vetoed a
move by Madrid´s new mayor
to allow cars to enter the
centre the capital, just days
after an anti-pollution policy
was scrapped.
The judge overruled the
mayor saying “the health of
Madrid” is more important
than “the right to travel by
car.” and the policy and
fines were reintroduced on
Monday.
The ban was originally
introduced by Madrid’s
former left-wing mayor last
Weapon haul linked to drugs gang
ONGOING police
investigations stemming
from the seizure of a six
ton haul of cocaine on
the Costa del Sol in 2018
has led them to a major
weapons armoury in
Malaga. They found an
AK-47 assault rifle, five
Skorpion assault rifles,
two semi-automatic
pistols, a revolver,
four grenades, three
silencers and “a lot” of
ammunition, all ready for
November.
But the centre-right Partido
Popular scrapped it, saying it
hurt businesses and restricted
movement.
They suspended fines on
cars entering the currently
restricted area of around five
sq km from July 1st, while
it reviewed the plan to make
it “compatible with citizens’
mobility needs”.
The move provoked
protests across Madrid,
by Simon Russell
use. These were found in
the boot of a car parked
in a garage that was
linked to one of the gang
members.
16 members of
the major criminal
organisation, which has
Dutch connections, were
arrested at the time of the
original drugs haul and
a further four have been
charged since, two in
and environmental groups
including Greenpeace said
the ban - known as “Madrid
Central” - slashed air pollution
levels from car emissions in
the centre to record lows, as
much as halving pollution in
some areas.
The European Commission
warned Spain that it would
face sanctions and a possible
lawsuit in the Court of Justice
of the European Union if
it fails to meet air quality
standards in its largest cities
of Madrid and Barcelona.
Holland, one in Austria
and one in Costa Rica,
showing the size and
reach of the gang. Several
million euros worth of
property, 1.5 million
euros in cash and a fleet
of 35 performance cars
have also been seized
since the huge operation
commenced. The cars
had been modified to
hide drugs and transfer
them throughout Europe,
say police.
SPEEDY CON
by Alex Trelinski
SCAM emails have been
doing the rounds in Spain saying
that the recipient has been
caught speeding in their car and
providing a link through which
they should pay a sizeable fine.
The messages appear to
come from the Dirección
Electrónica Vial (‘Digital Traffic
Directorate’) or DEV and do not
name the person they are sent
to but are addressed to “Señor
conductor,” or ‘Dear Mr Driver’.
In it, the “fined” motorist is
informed that have to pay a fine
of €1,530 and is conveniently
provided with a link apparently
to the DEV payment site.
Spain’s General Directorate
of Traffic (DGT) says it never
sends out fine notices via email.
STUCK BRITS
SEVEN British people had
Ṫhe incident happened in
a building on Calle Jumilla
in Punta Prima on Tuesday
stopping between two floors.
The ordeal lasted for
around 15 minutes, with no
reason given as to what caused
the problem.
KITTY RESCUE
TORREVIEJA by Alex Trelisnki
firefighters staged an
unusual rescue on
Monday afternoon,
after getting a call from
British resident, Chrissie
Doades, that a meowing
sound was coming from
her property on Calle
Venus in the Toretta III
area of the city.
The noise had been
going strong for several
hours and the fire crew
arrived at Chrissie´s
bungalow to check where
it was coming from.
An inspection
discovered the meowing
to be from some PVC
sewage piping at the
home, and they broke it
carefully to let the kitten
out.
It was understandably
very wet and frightened,
and was quickly wrapped
in a towel to dry it down
and also to comfort it.
The kitten had
apparently entered the
area via the main sewage
drainpipe and got
Benidorm on song
Police arrest Benidorm thief
A display of items celebrating
the sixtieth anniversary of the
Benidorm Song Festival has
opened in the resort.
The exhibition opened last
Thursday, at the Boca del Calvari
Museum in Benidorm old town,
coinciding with the anniversary of
the first festival’s finals night.
That evening, back in 1959,
the song ‘Un Telegrama’, sung
by Monna Bell, was the winning
composition.
Promotional posters of the
event, discs of the winning songs,
comics and a replica of the first
Little Mermaid (an award granted
by the festival) taken directly from
the original plaster mould, will all
be featured in the exhibition.
The Benidorm Song Festival
was held 39 times over the years
and winners included Julio Iglesias
and Raphael.
After becoming an International
event in 1964, the festival attracted
stars of worldwide renown,
including Joe Cocker and a young
Aretha Franklin, who made her
only appearance in Spain, at the
contest, in 1970.
According to the curator of the
exhibition, Juan Díaz, it was “the
longest-running song festival”
by Andy Mansell
of its kind, created under the
inspiration of San Remo (Italy) and
in competition with the Barcelona
Song Festival, which lasted barely
a decade.
Widely recognised, as being
responsible for putting Benidorm
on the international map, the
event, organised in the early
Aretha Franklin appeared at the 1970 event.
years, by pioneering Mayor,
Pedro Zaragoza, the festival was
broadcast in eleven European and
American countries.
The exhibition is open daily
until October 20, from 18.00h
to 23.00h hours and to make
the experience more interactive,
an ‘app’ will be available, on
which visitors can listen to the
accompanying songs.
The suspect was returned to the prison
he had recently been released from.
National Police in Benidorm
have arrested a man suspected of
committing a series of robberies in
the resort last month, two with force,
one with a vehicle, another with
violence and one house burglary.
The forty-two year old detainee,
who had recently been released
from prison, was arrested on three
separate occasions, during a five
day period. The officers became
suspicious, following two robberies
at a Benidorm hotel, where access
was gained via the terrace of the
bedrooms. Two expensive phones,
a tablet and a clock were stolen
from the occupants of the rooms,
during the robberies. Following
investigations, the officers
identified the alleged thief and
set up an operation to detain him.
Before they were able to arrest the
suspect, they were called to another
robbery, in which a thief, riding a
motorcycle, snatched a backpack
by Andy Mansell
from a pedestrian walking on
a pavement. The investigating
officers suspected the protagonist
was the same person, who had
committed the thefts from the hotel
bedrooms and also established that
the motorcycle used in the robbery,
had been stolen the previous day and
proceeded to arrest the perpetrator.
The third arrest occurred a couple
of days later on July 1st when
the suspect was arrested for
committing a crime of robbery with
force inside a house, during which
he stole a television and various
electronic devices. These items
were subsequently recovered by the
police officers from a store selling
second hand items. After his third
arrest the suspected was detained
in the prison he had recently been
released from, where he remains
awaiting trial.

Restoring work to
its former glory
THE iconic “Cosmos
62” statue that was returned
to Calpe a month ago is
to be restored at a cost of
just under €16,500. The
restoration work is to
be done by Contrafforte
Restauro which specialises
in this sort of project and
is part of the agreement
between Calpe and the
IVAM who held the piece
for several years after
purchasing it from its then
owner. However sculptor
by Simon Russell
Andreu Alfaro, who created
the item, always made his
works with the environment
where they stand in mind.
He had originally designed
it to be located close to
Calpe’s northern access and
this is the spot where it will
be returned to. The Alfaro
family have agreed to send
two sculptures from their
collection to the IVAM to
replace “Cosmos 62”.
Safe haven from sex pests
THE socialist party in Calpe
are proposing to create female
“lilac points” for festivals,
hopefully in time for the
summer programme of events.
Following some high profile
sexual assaults at Spanish
fiestas, many towns and cities
have started introducing these
zones which are both a safe
point and somewhere victims
can be helped and talked to if
they wish. A Calpino PSPV
spokesperson said the aim was
“to raise awareness, prevent
incidents, and get people to
enjoy the party while respecting
women” while targeting both
physical and verbal intimidation.
The next official plenary council
sessions are not scheduled until
September and it is hoped that
the relatively low cost measure
can be approved before then,
although it will need the support
of Mayor Ana Sala from the
Partido Popular.
Celebrating the
THE Mare de Deu del Calpe
fiesta run from today (Friday 12
July) until Tuesday in the Marina
Alta town. It is held in honour of
the Mare de Deu (or Virgen del
Carmen) who is the patron saint
of mariners meaning much of
the festivities will have a nautical
theme. Things start at 9pm today
with the Brotherhood Dinner for
seafarers and their families while
tomorrow at the fishing port there
will be water filled bouncy castles
and other water based activities
for the kids from 10.30am. There
are other games throughout the
day and in the evening there is
the “Creampop Mini Festival”
featuring a Queen tribute act and
other live bands as well as a bar.
The kid’s water games are back on
Sunday morning and at midday,
there is the Caldero Competition
where the three best traditionally
by Simon Russell
prepared rice and fish dishes (strict
rules apply) will be judged. This
carries a first prize of €250 with
runners up awards of €150 and
€100. This event is followed by
a disco in the fish market. On
Monday there is more music with
the Diamons Orchestra playing in
the main square at 10pm. Tuesday
is a more solemn day with mass
and a choir in the morning and the
traditional flower offering in the
evening. This is in memory of those
who have lost their lives at sea and
will be held at the port with music
accompaniment by the Calp Ifach
Musical Union. To wrap things up
there is a spectacular “fireworks
castle”. Check with the Town Hall
or Tourist Information for further
details and please note that some
events may be subject to change
due to things such as the weather.

From rubbish to ropa
by Simon Russell
JAVEA residents have donated 53,542
kilos of old garments and textiles in the
first half of the year, something that can be
converted into over 100,000 new items of
clothing. The Humana Pueblo Foundation
manages the collection points around the
municipality and at the eco-park. As well
as clothing, footwear, accessories and
home textiles such as curtains can also be
donated. As well as helping good causes
where needed, the recycling scheme also
saves on urban waste and collection of
rubbish as all this is carried out by Humana
Pueblo. They say that the average person
in Spain discards 40 kilograms of clothing
and textiles each year - equivalent to
around a million tons annually even in a
mid size town such as Javea.
wandering onto his
land. However, the
council say that the
fences are not licensed
and have promised an
investigation.
She praised special events such as the current
very positive initiatives. She also promised to
do her best to see that vacant stalls become
INCHING TO REMAIN
Labour is promising to campaign for
Remain in a new EU referendum against
“no deal or a damaging Tory Brexit”.
The shift in stance was signalled by
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on Tuesday,
as he challenged the next prime minister
But his statement did not explain what
Labour would do if the party won a general
Jeremy Corbyn has faced calls to move
senior members of Labour.
In a letter to members, the party leader
said: “Whoever becomes the new prime
minister should have the confidence to put
The Keys to Successful Investing
The suspension of Woodford
Equity Income a month ago sparked
the biggest controversy in UK fund
management for a decade. Hundreds
of thousands of retail investors were
unable to reclaim their capital from
a fund that has since been forced
into a fire sale of its assets and while
investors in this fund can only wait
out the suspension for now, there are
some important lessons that can be
learnt for the future.
Whether it’s reviewing your
current investment portfolio or
using this checklist next time you’re
planning to invest in a new fund, the
Woodford situation highlights the
main areas investors need to check
before investing.
Diversification of risk is key
You don’t want to put all your eggs
in one basket, diversify, diversify!
You need to check that you have a
good spread across different funds,
sectors and countries and review your
investments each year. Rebalance
if needed, so that you don’t end up
too concentrated. If you are invested
in a Portfolio the Portfolio manager
should do this for you.
Diversification is just common
sense, as a reasonable spread of assets
can potentially limit exposure to
market downturns, fund suspensions
and volatility.
Make sure you understand what
you are investing in
This is especially true if you are
self-investing - the guiding principle
of the Warren Buffett school of
investment. Buy blue-chips and
brand names you know. Anything
else, avoid.
Know the difference between best
buy tables and actual advice
This could perhaps be the biggest
lesson learnt from the Woodford saga.
Mr Woodford was a firm favourite
of fund ‘best buy’ lists, Hargreaves
Lansdown, one of the most influential
financial intermediaries, has received
major criticism since the fund’s
suspension for this reason.
Understand liquidity
This is how quickly you can buy/
sell an asset and as investors have
found, investing in unquoted smaller
companies via an open-ended fund
can create a liquidity mismatch. Just
because a fund says it offers daily
dealing, doesn’t mean it always will.
There is the argument that a
crackdown is needed on open-ended
funds investing in illiquid assets.
However, it does allow customers to
invest in a diversity of fund options.
Following a “star”
No one fund manager has the
secret to outperforming the market
in all conditions and therefore you
should expect everyone at some point
to have bad performance. If someone
has a good long-term track record,
don’t just assume it will continue.
Don’t have the herd mentality and
just follow everyone else.
Don’t be greedy
We would all love our investments
to grow year on year, but that is not
how it is in the real world. Markets go
down as well as up. If an investment
offers you consistently good or above
average returns no matter what the
market conditions are, it will end
in tears and you will lose money
(usually all your money invested) in
Beware; scammers and fraudsters
love greed, investors wishes for
unrealistic returns on investments
are music to their ears, it´s the way
they make money, you lose, they
win!
If it seems too good
to be true IT IS!!!
If you are unsure that your current
investments are diversified enough,
or are being offered an investment
with terms that seem too good to
be true, or you are new to investing,
getting advice from a financial advice
WHAT IS YOUR SPANISH DREAM?
Are you looking to buy your dream
property in Spain? If so, Sun Lawyers can
make sure that the dream does not turn into an
unwanted nightmare!
You´ve decided that that now it is the right
time to purchase that dream property in the
sun and you want to know about some very
key facts.
Firstly, is the price the right one, and
secondly, is the area where the property is
situated perfect for you to make that dream a
reality?
We at Sun Lawyers will make sure that you
don´t fall into any hidden traps, and trust us
that at times you get all kinds of false ideas
that you need to look far and wide to get the
right home, and that you have to deal with
mounds of paperwork in Spain.
That´s simply not true, if you have a good
estate agent, but above all a legally qualified
Spanish lawyer, like our team at Sun Lawyers,
that will help you with the purchase of your
property, and to make it hassle-free.
The good news is that we have broken
everything down to four options in the sort
of property that you can buy in making your
dream a reality, and with all of our experience
in exactly this field, Sun Lawyers will guide
through all the steps.
The buying options are:-
Off-plan property
An off-plan property is one that has not
yet been built, but has been granted planning
permission, and can be bought at early stage
of construction.
This choice might also give you chance to
come up with ideas in the design and build of
your dream.
Sun Lawyers will ensure: -
- that the plans and drawings submitted to the
local Town Hall.
- background checks are done on the
developer/builder.
- the project is registered with the Town Hall.
- all planning permissions are in place.
bank guarantees.
All of this can be dealt with efficiently
and effectively by having the qualified Sun
Lawyers team working for you.
New build
Would you like to buy a brand-new
property in Spain? Our recommendation
here is you always work with a respected,
experienced and qualified lawyer, and that´s
where Sun Lawyers come in!
Together with the real estate company, we
can protect your interest and work together to
get what you want.
Other factors include:-
- drawing up a contract.
- making sure the property is legally built.
completed on time and within the budget.
Resale property
This is the most popular way of buying
property in Spain, with stack of second-hand
housing that has either had a previous owner
or used for rental.
Sun Lawyers will ask these key questions
and check these points:-
- Is the seller the legal owner?
- Has the property has the correct license?
- Is there no debt on the property?
- Have all of the bills being paid and are up
date from the seller?
- And is the property that you want to buy,
exactly as it has been advertised?
Bank Repossession.
Spain´s recession from a decade ago
led to the increased availability of bank
repossessions.
Such properties could be brand new or a
resale, and there are some bargains to be had,
but they are bought as “seen”.
Sun Lawyers will carry out some important
checks namely:-
-With the bank and the local planning
department at the Town Hall.
-What may be owed on utilities that will need
to be reconnected with past use to be paid for.
These four types of properties may also be
purchased by using a power of attorney, and
needs and supervise the entire
project. You get exactly
somewhere to park the car
out of the glare of the sun or
the sandy rain?
Extensions to existing
houses as well as building
building company will carry
out the entire job from the
pool pump, the cover, tiler,
plumber, roofer, carpenter
and electrical work.
Derek said: “We’ve had
a number of jobs on urbanisations
where people want
their own pools but have
very small plots. What we’ve
found is that if you have
room to park a car we can
get a pool in”.
Keeping your
pool healthy
in summer
Run the filter more
July and August are the time
when you need the most filtering
of the season. Set that
pool filter timer a few extra
hours longer each day. What
you spend on electricity you
will save in chemicals which
can really add up. Your water
is warm enough to shut
off the pool heater and the
combination of warm water
and bright sunshine all call
for more filtering time each
day.
Add more chlorine
Warmer water, more swimmers
and longer sunlight
hours mean that your chlorine
will deplete or burn-up
faster. Add extra 3” tabs to
your chlorinator, and/or turn
the dial higher to maintain
chlorine levels. Pool shock
frequency may also rise
during the hottest parts of
the summer, to fight algae,
bacteria, chloramines, and
cloudy water.
Stay stable
Sunlight is an enemy of all
pool chemicals on some levels.
Long hours of daily sunlight
means that stabiliser
levels are even more important,
to prevent degradation
of chlorine when you need it
most. Keep your stabilizer
level between 20-50 ppm,
and reduce or dilute if over
100 ppm.
More important than stabiliser,
however, is to consistently
test your pool water
balance during July and
August. Your pool water is
ever-changing, but never
more than during the hottest
summer months, when
pH, Alkalinity, and stabiliser
levels can rise and cause water
balance problems.
Stay cool and beat
the heat
Hot temperatures, long sunlight
exposure, and more
pool parties mean more
friends and family with
more sunblock and oil. This
can lead to a ring around
your waterline, more organic
solids dissolved in your water,
and cloudy or hazy pool
water.
Enzymes are natural oileaters
that also clean the
pool filter of trapped oils
and greasy gunk, and reduce
chlorine demand by removing
organics from the pool
and pool system.

If you´ve been inspired by the
TV show Game of Thrones, or all
kind of sprawling big and small
screen historical epic dramas, then
a cool 15 million euros will get
you a castle in the historic city of
Segovia in central Spain.
The property became classified
as a monument of national interest
in 1931, and has an area of 79
by Simon Russell
hectares and the total built area is
5,500 m2.
It consists of five floors, 21
rooms (all with en-suite bathrooms
and two large bedroom suites); a
royal hall for 300 people, spacious
terraces, a wonderful inner
courtyard, ample parking area and
a historical library.
As if that weren’t enough, the
property has a mill of about 450
m2 which has been converted into a
guest house and is in a perfect state
of conservation.
There are also several swimming
pools, another pyramid-shaped
house, several buildings (currently
in use as museums) and a chapel.
The main architectural style
present in the castle is Gothic-
Mudejar, although Arab,
Elizabethan and Neoclassical
influences can be observed.
The origin of the castle is not
clear, but some researchers believe
that it dates back to the 8th century
and that it was the work of Abd-al
Rahman I; others, however, attribute
it to Almanzor (10th century).
In the 19th century, it belonged
to the Catholic branch of the
Hohenzollern family and in 1856
it passed into the hands of José
Galofré, painter and honorary
secretary of Queen Isabel II.
Later, it became the property of
the Marquises of Quintanar is now
being marketed on idealista.

Big hike in
rental rates
FIGURES just released by property
firm pisos.com show that the price of
rentals in Spain increased by 16.3% in
the first half of this year compared with
the same period in 2018. The average
apartment or house is 125 square meters
and costs tenants €943 per month. As of
the end of June Madrid was the most
expensive region at €1,671 per month
followed by the Balearics (€1,339) and
Catalonia (€1,194) while at the other
end of the scale Extremadura costs just
by Simon Russell
€466 on average. Pisos.com director
Ferrann Font said that the increasing
rental prices are “continuing to strain
the relationship between owners and
tenants” as an increasing percentage of
people’s salary goes to keeping a roof
over their head. He further states that
the market is in danger of overheating
and government intervention needs to
be considered.
Mortgage error
totalled 100 million
SOME experts feel that a
Spanish bank lender who
made a 100 million euro
error in mortgages they
issued have been lucky
to escape penalties. The
Bank of Spain opened
an investigation after a
complaint by Ausbanc
against BBVA relating
to land clauses in several
thousand mortgages. They
ordered BBVA to issue a
full review of mortgages
issued in 2014 and after
concluding the investigation
they returned a total of 100
by Simon Russell
million euros to customers
which were charged in
error. The Bank of Spain
says they now consider the
matter closed as BBVA
acted promptly both when
the matter was brought to
their attention and also in
the compensation process,
with the capital and interest
being paid swiftly. BBVA
said that the work cost them
an extra 25 million euros on
consultancy fees, staffing
and other expenses.

THE COST OF HOME IMPROVEMENTS
If you´ve bought a second-hand property in Spain,
and it needs some work doing on it, then you need to
factor in any improvements you might need to make.
The question is how much does it cost to change
the old bathtub for a shower tray, to strip and varnish
your parquet flooring, to paint your house or to make
the built-in wardrobes you’ve been dreaming of for
all this time? In painting your new home, the painter
will base their pricing on things like the height of the
ceilings, the condition of the walls and even which
floor the apartment is on – it’s not the same for them
to take all their materials to a ground floor flat than
to a top-floor room in a building where there’s no
lift! Normally, if the wall doesn’t have too many
imperfections and they don’t have to do any extra
preparatory work like plastering, painting a house
should cost you no more than eight euros per square
metre.
In switching from a bathtub to a shower, the
process is relatively simple and will give you more
bathroom space, which is especially good for the
elderly or those with mobility problems. Making to
the switch will also save on your water bills, and a
project of this type should be ready in four or five
days at the most. In terms of the price, it should not
be more than around 1,4000 euros, and the price
should include a glass screen, new taps and, of
course, a new shower base.
If the wooden floor is in a good state, stripping
off the old layer of wax and putting on a new
finish will be cheaper than laying a whole new
floor. In addition, solid wood floors are of a higher
quality than laminate floors and these days you
can get waxes to restore your parquet without first
having to sand it down, a process that reduces the
thickness of the wood. Assuming the parquet is in
good condition, this home repair should be around
550 euros for an average room of the 24 square
metres. Finally, a made-to-measure wardrobe is the
perfect way to make the most of the full height and
width of a space, whereas a standard wardrobe will
always leave some unused spaces. Above all, think
carefully about how you will set it out to make the
most of the room you’ve got. As for the price, it will
range from around 750 euros for a small, two-door
cabinet that is lined inside with melamine, going
as high as around 1,900 euros for a wardrobe with
three compartments.

Expats beware: Sending money
HRT- The most hotly debated
medical subject!
Everybody these days turns to ‘Google’ but if you start
to research the ‘pros and cons’ of taking HRT you will be
bombarded with a mix-match of information!! My advice
is that it is generally not a good thing to turn to internet for
medical advice but if you do want to do your own research,
always use trusted sites such as NHS Choices or NICE
(National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).
If you visit a gynaecologist on the Spanish Social
Security system (NHS) complaining of menopausal
symptoms, it is very likely that the response you will
receive is to be told it is ‘normal’ and basically you need
to get on with it!! The strange thing is that there are
many conditions that come with age such as deteriorating
eyesight, worn out joints, high cholesterol etc. etc. But, do
we say ‘Normal’........NO, we give people glasses, joint
replacements and medications!!!
So, why are some health professionals reluctant to give
HRT? It is because of fear of risk factors.
Here at the Family Medical Centre (Albir) we are
generally pro HRT, so long as it is given to suitable low
risk patients as safely as possible. For those suffering (or
who have suffered) from menopausal symptoms, you will
know that your quality of life can be very much reduced to
the point that you feel a different person. Loved ones may
also report that you are totally not yourself.
If you are suffering symptom such as hot flushes, night
sweats, poor sleep, anxiety, irritability, loss of libido, loss
of memory (to name just a few) do not suffer in silence.
The first thing to do is to speak with an experienced,
sympathetic health care professional. Here at the Family
Medical Centre we offer menopausal assessments.
Appointments are not rushed (some take over an hour). You
will be given a sympathetic ear and there is always a box of
tissues to hand! In my experience, many women just want
to be heard. They want somebody who is not judgemental
to listen to them. Sometimes after a really good ‘heart to
heart’ (and often a good cry) women decide not to go the
HRT route but to try other things to help.
Unfortunately there is not one form of HRT that will
help all symptoms. During a menopause assessment, my
job is to get a clear picture (from lots of questions!) of
what symptoms are most troublesome to a woman and to
ascertain what symptoms they can or can’t put up with! All
women are different. My other task is to assess the risks for
that particular patient by taking a careful personal medical
history and family medical history. In certain cases we could
not be able to consider giving HRT. If I felt that the benefits
of HRT would outweigh the risks (having explained them
to the patient) I would then discuss the case with our G.P.
who would make the final decision about prescribing HRT.
We always point out to patients that this is not a ‘quick
fix’. The normal procedure is for the patient to come back
in 3 months for a review. If there is an improvement in
symptoms (and quality of life) and the woman wants to
continue, the doctor would then prescribe for a further 6
months. After a 6 month review, if all is well the patient can
then just have an annual review.
During the month of July, the Family Medical Centre,
Albir have a limited special offer – they are offering
Menopausal Assessments for 36€ (25% off the normal
price of 48€) Appointments are essential.
Stay hot on your eye
health this summer
It’s not just your skin that
you need to think about
protecting in the warm
weather, says Liz Connor
WE all know that when
it’s blazing sunshine outside,
we should apply sun
cream and wear a hat to
protect our skin, but when
it comes to our eyes, we
don’t always go that extra
mile.
During the summer, our
eyes are especially vulnerable
to harmful UV light, but according
to research, up to 20
million people in the UK may
be putting their eye health at
risk by not checking the UV
rating when they buy sun-
glasses on the high street.
As studies also reveal that
5-10% of all skin cancers are
found on the eyelid, keeping
your eyes protected has
never been more important.
Dan McGhee, director of professional
services at Vision
Express, gives us his top tips
for getting your eyes summerready.
Start wearing the
right sunglasses
from a young age
“Up to 80% of a person’s lifetime
exposure to UV will
occur before the age of 18,
according to a study by the
World Health Organisation,
and with UVA sun rays causing
premature ageing and
age-related illnesses, it is important
to protect your eyes
from an early age.
“Young people’s eyes are
more sensitive to UV absorption
and under-12s are particularly
susceptible, because
the clear lenses in their eyes
are not yet properly formed.”
Have regular eye
examinations
“The best way to start protecting
your eyes is by having
regular eye tests at the optician.
“These will highlight any
sight problems or damage,
such as cataracts, macular
degeneration or skin cancer
around the eye area, and can
determine other health issues,
such as high cholesterol
and even diabetes.”
Wear sunglasses
even when it’s
cloudy
“Make sure you wear sunglasses
while outdoors at all
times, even if your eyes feel
fine, as some of the effects
of too much light can be delayed,
just as in sunburn.
“Prolonged sun exposure
has been directly linked to
cataract formation and pterygium
(a pinkish, triangular
tissue growth on the cornea
of the eye) and are seen more
commonly on people who
spend a lot of time outdoors
and in hot climates.”
Consider polarised
shades
“Polarised lenses offer the best
protection from the sun, blocking
indirect glare and reducing
the need to squint, which
can cause muscle fatigue,
headaches and eye strain.
“No longer just a sports essential,
DISCOVER THE HEALTHY
DELIGHTS OF THE MED
INGREDIENTS
2 slices white bread
8 large ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped
1 green pepper, deseeded and roughly chopped
3 garlic cloves, roughly chopped
75ml extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling
2-3 tbsp cider vinegar
TO SERVE
1 boiled egg, finely chopped
½ red onion, finely chopped
50g Serrano ham, chopped
½ green pepper, finely sliced
A HEART-healthy diet is obviously good for your ticker,
but according to a new study it may also help your mind.
Researchers in the USA observed a group of more than
2,600 young adults over the course of three decades.
They found those who stuck to a more Mediterranean diet
of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish had better brain function
during middle age.
They were actually 46 per cent less likely to develop poor
thinking skills than those who did not stick to a Mediterranean
diet.
So it appears the diet, centred around fruits, vegetables,
olive oil, nuts, legumes, and whole grains, is good for everything
from your brain to your bones.
From reduced blood sugar to better memory, studies have
shown how following the regime can be of benefit.
You should be eating fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats
like olive oil multiple times per day; legumes and unrefined
whole grains at least once a day; and fish, nuts, and seeds
multiple times per week.
There are countless Mediterranean diet recipes on the internet.
Here are a couple of ideas from Good Food magazine
that might tempt your taste buds and get you started.
METHOD
Soak the bread in a shallow dish of water for 30 seconds
on each side. Whizz together the soaked bread, tomatoes,
green pepper, garlic and olive oil in a food processor.
Add 2 tbsp cider vinegar, a large pinch of salt and 100ml
water, then mix again to a smooth soup consistency, adding
a little more water if it is too thick. Check the seasoning
and add more salt, vinegar or olive oil to taste.
Chill the soup for at least one hour, then drizzle with
extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with black pepper. Top
with the egg, onion, ham and green pepper.
Pets
Looking after
older dogs
WHEN your canine friend
gets older, they will have
different health requirements
than they did when
they were young. It is important
to take good care
of your senior dog so that
they can enjoy their life to
the full.
Behavioural
Changes
Take a close look at your
dog’s behaviour – slight or
dramatic changes in the way
that they act might be the
sign of a problem or disease.
Pay close attention to how
much they are eating and
drinking, as well as changes
in their sleep routine or toilet
habits. Irritability can
also be a sign of a deeper
problem and is often symptomatic
of pain.
Older Dogs and
Mobility
When your dog gets old they
will stiffen up meaning it
will be more difficult for
them to get around. However,
be aware that rather than
just a symptom of old age
they might be experiencing
arthritis and other health
issues that make it hard to
get up off the floor or climb
stairs.
Changing Your
Dog’s Diet
As your dog ages, their nutritional
requirements change.
It is important to feed your
dog an age appropriate dog
food, which will be specially
formulated for older dogs.
Also, you will need to start
giving your dog smaller portions,
because they are naturally
less active than when
they are young.
Make Your
Dog’s Bed More
Comfortable
If your old dog is feeling a
little tired and achy, having
a warm and soft bed to lie in
will really help.
Spot the signs of arthritis in cats
CATS are natural athletes
and highly active but over
the years this can take its
toll. As a consequence,
older cats may suffer from
wear and tear on their
joints. Many older cats
suffer with arthritis and
with cats living longer this
is a growing problem.
As in humans, arthritis
causes joints to degenerate
over time, resulting in reduced
mobility and pain.
Cats are known and loved
for their independent nature
and athleticism, and it
is these qualities that can
make it difficult for owners
to identify when they are
in discomfort. Furthermore,
cats have evolved to instinctively
hide signs that they
are in pain.
As cats are relatively
small and very agile they
can hide mobility difficulties
caused by arthritis. For
instance, unlike dogs, cats
with arthritis don’t generally
limp. Instead cats are
more likely to show subtle
changes in their behaviour.
Answer these questions.
If you answer yes to any of
them it could indicate that
your cat is in pain.
• Reduced mobility: Have
you noticed your cat hesitating
or being more reluctant
to jump up or down
eg into your lap/the furniture/through
a cat flap?
• Reduced activity: Have
you noticed your cat slowing
down eg sleeping
more – especially in one
place?
• Changes in grooming habits:
Have you noticed a
deterioration in your cat’s
appearance eg matted or
scruffy coat?
• Changes in temperament:
Have you noticed any
changes in your cat’s attitude
or daily routine eg
less tolerant around people
or more withdrawn?
If you suspect that your
cat may be exhibiting one
or more of these symptoms,
speak to your vet.

Fabulous
Florence
SOME cities just have
that effect on you. You
stand there and, for
a second, wonder if
what you’re seeing is
real.
Florence is such a
place. Tuscany’s gem,
a priceless jewel set in
the heart of this great
region, is simply aweinspiring.
Just a few hours on a
plane and you’re transported
to the setting of
many an old Italian masterpiece.
See what these
artists and architects
who created and lived
in Florence saw. Walk in
their footsteps and feel a
part of its splendour.
It really does take
your breath away.
It’s not often a city is
cherished so much it gets
a “treasure of humanity”
status from UNESCO
but that’s exactly what
Florence has been given.
It is quite simply one
of the most beautiful cities
in the world, a symbol
of everything our
modern civilisation owes
the ancient Italians.
It has masses of attractions
to see, loads of
stunning palaces, places
of worship, statues and
some of the finest art
anywhere on the planet.
And if you’re a wine
buff, all this happens to
be set in a region of outstanding
natural beauty
where rolling hills and
meandering rivers combine
with the mixed
climate to produce the
ideal growing conditions
for some legendary vineyards.
It’s the city equivalent
of music by one of
those supergroups – it’s
as if years ago the greatest
artists and painters
were called together to
each contribute something
special to the mix.
And Florence is what
they created. Cathedral
by Giotto, palaces and
churches by Michelozzo,
da Sangallo and Baccio
d’Agnolo, and the city’s
main great piazzas laid
out under the direction
of Giuseppe Poggi in the
19th century.
Even our own Sir Norman
Foster has joined
this exclusive band of superstars.
His breathtaking
design for the city’s
high speed train station
is one of the iconic landmarks
of modern Florence
and was opened in
2010.

The Azores
& Madeira
THESE two autonomous regions
of Portugal are both
made up of archipelagos of
smaller islands, situated in
the North Atlantic Ocean.
Madeira is considerably
further south of the Azores
and of Portugal itself, being
off the coast of Morocco and
by Andy Mansell
Worldwide Horizons
closer to the Canary Islands.
Tourism is a big industry
in both destinations. Golfers
can enjoy playing in one of
the 3 golf courses there, one
of which was designed by the
famous Spanish golfer, Seve
Ballestero.
Madeira is also well known
by walkers for its abundant
flora and fauna, with a virtual
year-round climate due to the
gulf stream. It is also known
for its wine, (Madeira) which
also gave its name to the
popular UK Madeira cake,
so called as it was frequently
eaten as an accompaniment
to the wine.
The island was found by
Portuguese sailors in the
1400s and is generally considered
the first territorial discover
in the exploratory Age
of Discovery.
Now, there are a little under
300.000 inhabitants on the island,
although that number
swells almost daily with the
large cruise ships that dock in
the harbour at Funchal.
This is also the location of
one of the world’s best fireworks
display on New Years
Eve, when locals and tourist
get the opportunity to dress
up (starting on the 30th) and
dance the night away after
dinner, right through to the
next day.
On the 31st, large cruise
ships begin arriving in the
port, where, at the stroke of
midnight and accompanied
by an orchestra, they participate
in a spectacular fireworks
display, before party
continues until breakfast on
the 1st!
The Azores, quite further
north, are made up of nine
smaller islands, the largest
of which is Sao Miguel, where
the capital city of Ponta Delgada
is located.
These islands were all originally
volcanoes, although
some have had no volcanic activity
since they were formed.
Portugal’s highest mountain
is located on the island of
Pico, an impressive 2351m.
This is a popular hike, but
it should not be underestimated
– the walk can take
around 6-9 hours and a guide
is recommended!
There are plenty of tours
and attractions to visit in
Ponta Delgada. The island
has an impressive natural
landscape, greenery in abundance
and lakes which now
fill volcanic craters.
From the port you can take
a boat trip to look for whales
and dolphins, or perhaps take
a walk through the nearby
lava tunnel. Plunging to 1.6
km under the ground, this
can involve some quite tight
spaces, good hiking gear is
recommended, all worth it to
see the unusual stalagmite
and stalactite formations underground.
Getting to either Madeira
or Azores is easy with a connecting
flight in Lisbon. Alternatively,
most transatlantic
cruises stop at the Azores on
their way to/from the US, and
Madeira regularly features
on most Canary Island Cruise
itineraries.
Accommodation is plentiful
in Madeira, whilst most hotels
in the Azores are located
on Sao Miguel.

FRIDAY 12TH JULY 2019
Motoring
Just like the closely-related
Hyundai Kona Electric, the Kia
e-Niro is causing ripples in the
electric car world. It’s bigger
than the Kona - more of a rival
to the Nissan Qashqai and SEAT
Ateca - but shares its 59kWh
electric motor and can cover an
impressive 282 miles between
charges.
KIA e-Niro
Unlike the Hyundai Kona
Electric, Kia’s not offering a
lower-powered version of the
e-Niro in the UK - and, for the
time being, it’s only available
in one ‘First Edition’ trim
level. As a result, it’s a fair bit
more expensive than the Kona,
not to mention other electric
vehicles like the Nissan Leaf and
Volkswagen e-Golf.
You can see where your
money is going, though.
Its interior feels distinctly
premium - more convincingly
so than the Kona Electric.
It’s also well-equipped, with
standard equipment including
adaptive cruise control, a
premium sound system and
leather upholstery.
The e-Niro’s boxy
dimensions means there’s
plenty of space for four adults,
with plenty of head, leg and
shoulder room. The boot is
usefully big and square in shape,
with access easier than the Kona
Electric.
To drive, the e-Niro’s
acceleration from low speed is
impressive. As soon as
you hit the accelerator
pedal, it surges forward
with no hesistancy. That’s
a perk of electric cars -
you don’t need to wait for
the automatic gearbox to
select the right gear or for
the revs
to build. It will just go,
running from 0-62mph
in 7.8 seconds. You do
have to be careful not to
spin the front wheels,
however, even in the dry.
It’s a heavy SUV and,
as such, it’s not the most
nimblest of handlers -
but it’s eager enough to
change direction and it
doesn’t lean too much
under cornering.
The e-Niro is at its
best in town, where
good visibility (aided by
standard parking sensors
and reversing camera)
makes it easy to squeeze
in and out of spaces.
What’s most
impressive about the
e-Niro is Kia has beaten
the more mainstream
manufacturers to
producing a genuinely
useable electric car.
It’s practical enough
for day-to-day family
use, doesn’t feel like
a compromise to drive
(actually it’s quite fun)
and represents reasonable
value for money. Its
closest competitor is the
Hyundai Kona Electric,
but both are subtly
GPs hit back at whiplash claims
Rising numbers of whiplash claims
have not only sent car insurance
premiums rocketing but they’re also
getting Britain’s GPs hot under the
collar.
The nation’s doctors are under
pressure to be a growing part of the
personal injury payout industry as
patients not only take up surgery time
while some seven per cent of GPs are
even being offered money to refer
people with whiplash injuries.
Now an overwhelming 88 per cent
of doctors surveyed across the UK
say it’s time new measures to control
whiplash claims are introduced as part
of a campaign to tackle the culture
that’s costing the country £2 billion
a year.
Nearly a quarter of under-pressure
docs say they have seen a substantial
rise in people with whiplash injuries
over the past five years while a further
40 per cent have noted a moderate
increase. And in the past year alone,
11 per cent of GPs recorded a
substantial surge in patients while 31
per cent had moderate additions to
their patient list.
The practitioners believe that,
on average, 37 per cent of patients
who come to them with whiplash
complaints as a result of a car accident
are fraudulent, while a third of doctors
believe over half of patients are faking
it.
However more than half of the
doctors involved in the study signed
off 50 per cent or less of patients as
having genuine injuries.
The survey for car insurer AXA
reveals one of the biggest problems
faced by doctors is the accuracy
of whiplash diagnosis - only seven
per cent believe it is very easy to
accurately diagnose.
Three in five doctors say they
spent less than 10 minutes assessing a
whiplash injury and only five per cent
believe they have enough time to deal
effectively with these patients.
In a bid to tackle the problem, nearly
80 per cent agree there should be a
more rigorous approach to assessing
injuries, while 71 per cent want access
to more detailed injury guidelines.
Better tests, access to specialist clinics
and expert opinion were also cited as
popular improvements that could be
made.
Overall doctors have a very negative
view of the increase in patients
pursuing financial compensation for
whiplash injuries. Nearly half believe
it has a negative effect on society
and only four per cent welcome the
fact that the UK is now much more
equipped to compensate people
injured in an accident.
The findings echo previous
research by AXA with Thatcham, the
leading motor research organisation,
into cars on UK’s roads and estimated
only 34 per cent have head restraints
and seats categorised as “good” when
it comes to reducing the risk of the
driver suffering whiplash injuries in
a crash.
The company says the studies
bear out its decision to drop referral
fees for personal injury claims and
helping to lead the campaign urging
the Government to ban the fees across
the insurance industry.
Motor director Sarah Vaughan
says: “We are determined to put a stop
to the totally unnecessary levels of
compensation payments being made
for whiplash in the UK.
“We have already made a first
step towards doing this through
campaigning for and securing the
banning of referral fees. But we
believe that compensation is still far
too easy to come by.
“Our study clearly shows that
the medical profession is under real
pressure in this area and crying out
for more guidance and support to
help them deal with a rapidly growing
number of whiplash patients.”

MEGHAN´S OWN GOAL
It´s very clear that Harry and
Meghan are doing things their own
way, and I admire that, much as it is
frustrating for the tabloid paparazzi.
But there needs to be some common
sense, after Meghan´s appearance
at Wimbledon on Monday. Two
days earlier, there was little glam
and glitter as the son of the Duke
and Duchess of Sussex, Archie, was
christened by the Archbishop of
Canterbury in a private ceremony
on Saturday, with no press or public
invited. Just close family and friends
popped along to the private chapel at
Windsor Castle, as the royal couple
opted to exclude everybody else
from the day and chose not to reveal
As a youngster
growing up in the race to get
a man on the moon, there was
always something special about
the Jodrell Bank Observatory in
Cheshire, especially as my family
drove past it a lot in the sixties.
I was delighted to hear the
news that it has now been declared
a Unesco World Heritage Site,
as it has been at the forefront of
astronomical research since its
inception in 1945 and tracked the
US and Russian craft during the
space race. The site is dominated
by the landmark Lovell
Telescope, and it now joins
the city of Babylon and other
the names of Archie’s godparents.
Fair enough I say, but where Meghan
scored an own goal was going
along to Wimbledon on Monday to
watch her friend Serena Williams
play, with a gaggle of security staff
trying to bully people into not taking
photos in a public arena that is Court
Number One. Has she not heard of
television or the basic freedom to
take a picture in an open area? One
bloke was nudged away as he tried to
take a selfie and said he didn´t even
realise that she was there. A balance
needs to be struck over privacy, but
not when you are at a major sporting
event.
locations
that have been added to the
prestigious Unesco list. Scientific
research began at Jodrell Bank
Observatory in 1945 when the
physicist Sir Bernard Lovell came
to the University of Manchester,
and he became a familiar TV
face in the sixties and seventies.
The site pioneered the then new
science of radio astronomy,
which used radio waves instead
of visible light to understand the
universe, and though things like
that are taken for granted, I will
always remember the excitement
that Jodrell Bank created half a
century or so ago.
MEMORIES
HELP YOUR POSTIE
There have been countless
stories down the years of
postmen being unable to
deliver mail to an address
because of a fierce dog ready
to inflict damage on them.
Now, and somewhat belatedly,
the Royal Mail has issued
guidelines to dog owners to
stop the number of attacks.
Every week in the last year
around 47 postmen and women
were attacked by dogs in the
course of their work in Britain.
There were 2,484 dog attacks
on postal staff in the past year,
representing an increase of nine
per cent on the year previously.
In response, the Royal Mail
has issued the guidelines to
dog owners to prevent further
attacks in which it warns even
the most lovable dog can pose
a danger to delivery workers.
Among the postal services’
advice is to give your dog
some food to occupy them
while mail is being delivered.
Pet owners should shut their
canines in a secure room when
the postman comes knocking
and “wait 10 minutes after the
mail has arrived to let your pet
back into your hallway”. In
several postcodes, attacks on
postal workers have risen, with
strangely the Shropshire town
of Telford seeing the rate of
dog attacks quadruple.
Britain
SMOKE FREE BRITAIN?
The almost certain-to-be
new UK PM Boris Johnson is
promising to end the culture of a
“nanny state” of the government
telling people what to do, so
I wonder what he makes of a
leaked document suggesting plans
to eliminate smoking in Britain
by 2030? Health Secretary Matt
Hancock, who is a big Boris backer,
will announce the target next week
when he presents a Green Paper
focusing on the importance of
prevention. Smoking is still the
UK’s biggest preventable cause
of cancer, despite the rates of
Britons lighting up halving in the
last 35 years. It will be down
to tobacco companies, rather than
health providers, to cover the cost
of helping people to quit smoking,
according to the leaked documents
seen by the Daily Mail. But surely
if half of the smokers have quit
over the last three decades, then the
policy of heavily taxing cigarettes
and education is working, and
over a period of time numbers
will continue to fall anyway? And
can you see the tobacco lobby
throwing in the towel so easily, let
alone “helping” people to give up
buying their products?
GONE WITH A SWING
We´re well into the festival
season back in Britain, with for
many people Glastonbury being
the highlight at the end of last
month. But it´s not just music
that gets people outdoors for
a festival, as a Worcestershire
farm hosted Europe´s allegedly
largest sex festival last weekend
called Swingfields. That brought
some drama as a female swinger
ended up getting a heart attack
after “overdoing it during group
activities”.
The 52-year-old started gasping
for breath and was taken in an air
ambulance from the site to a cardiac
ward in a hospital. A source at the
festival said: “The swinger had a
heart attack when the medics were
on site. She was given emergency
treatment. It gave the 700 swingers
present a bit of a shock.”
“But it didn’t take too long for
the fun and games to resume”, he
added. Each to their own I say, but
I wouldn´t be too surprised if a few
drones whirled over the field last
weekend just to take a little peek at
what was happening.
DROP QUOTES
Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms,
in that the goal is for the solver to uncover
a hidden quote. A black-and-white
crossword-style grid is set up for each
quote, with a number of letters “hovering”
above each column. Your task is to
“drop” each of those letters into the appropriate
square in each column, until the
entire quote is revealed. All punctuation
(commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been
removed. Good luck!
Wild in the aisles with Rylan
Gazza’s quad backflip
Every week sees another revival
of a should’ve been forgotten TV
or movie gem and this week is no
exception. Beloved of students, night
shift workers and anyone stuck at
home in Dudley on a wet, Wednesday
afternoon, Supermarket Sweep, is set
to grace our TV screens again. With
original presenter, the perma-tanned,
permanently camp, Dale Winton, sadly
no longer with us, the SS production
team has turned to perhaps the only
man, who could step into the lovely
man’s leather loafers ….. Rylan Clark-
Neal. Clark-Neal appeared to confirm
he would host a rebooted version on
ITV2 with a tweet saying: “Been waiting
a while to say this but it’s finally time
to GO WILD IN THE AISLES ONCE AGAIN!
Supermarket Sweep is back, and I can’t
wait for you to CHECK IT OUT. See you soon on
itv2 “SupermarketSweep” Perfect casting in
my opinion, but I’ll be more interested to see
what the contestants put in their trolleys here
Rylan is stepping
in 2020 ….. sustainable fish
fingers, vegan burgers,
reduced sugar beans, Organic sweet potatoes,
oh and let’s not forget the two litre bottles of
Diamond White Cider.
So, Gazza
was in Benidorm earlier this month,
doing a one man show at the Ibrox
Bar in the new town. Despite a
series of inflammatory articles in
the UK tabloids, questioning why
Gascoigne, a recovering alcoholic,
would allow his agent to book the
show in an area synonymous with
drunken shenanigans, the evening
went down very well, with no
incidents reported. “I can drink in my
Gazza
backflipped
own
house if I want to, I don’t have to
come to Benidorm to do that,” said
an amused Gazza, who apparently
almost killed himself on the same
trip, when a quad bike he was driving
did a backflip. “I went a bit crazy
going through some trees on a quad
bike, hit a boulder and backflipped
over the quad,” he said at the time.
Maybe you should lay off the quads
as well as the booze, Paul?
My Eyes
FRIDAY 12TH JULY 2019
43
Gaga over
Babs
Nicki stands up
Nicki Minaj has pulled out
of an upcoming concert in
Saudi Arabia, stating that
she wants to support women
and the LGBTQ community.
In a statement released
to the Associated Press,
the 36-year-old rapper
explained: “After careful
reflection, I have decided
to no longer move forward
with my scheduled concert
at Jeddah World Fest.
‘While I want nothing more
than to bring my show to
fans in Saudi Arabia, after
better educating myself
on the issues, I believe it is
important for me to make
clear my support for the
rights of women, the LGBTQ
community and freedom of
expression.” It’s currently
‘Pride season’ across the
World, so well done Nicki
for making a stand against
bigotry and hatred.
Kris and Babs
roll back the
years
Judging by the range of
emotional and adoring social
media posts and tweets, flooding
the media, it appears that
Barbra Streisand gave a show
stopping the performance at last
weekend’s British Summertime
Festival in Hyde Park. I didn’t
see a single bad comment on
the concert, in which the 77
year-old songstress performed
a selection of classics from
across her incredible, record
breaking musical career. It
was rather touching to see
her joined onstage by another
veteran showbiz legend, Kris
Kristofferson, to perform their
duet, The Love Inside, from 1976,
Star is Born movie, in which
they played the lead characters,
Esther Hoffman Howard and John
Norman Howard. Rolling back the
years, the pair seemed to revel
in recreating the partnership,
recently recreated by Lady Gaga
and Bradley Cooper in last year’s
remake of the movie. I wonder if
we’ll see those two, singing their
duet, Shallow at some music
festival in 40 years time?
Nicki backs out
Where’s
me wig
Never too far from the
headlines at the moment,
Cardi B, had her followers
in a frenzy last week.
The singer has enjoyed
a hugely successful 18
months thanks to her
debut album Invasion Of
Privacy, which reached
number one in the US
and won best rap album
at the Grammys this
year. She tweeted a plea
for the safe return of
her wig after she “got
carried away” during her
headline set at Wireless
Festival. Video footage
shows the New York-born
artist kneeling on the
stage before ripping
off her wig mid-song
and throwing it into
the audience, sending
adoring fans scrambling
for the souvenir. “I GOT
CARRIED AWAY .......I want
my wig back:/ Dm me,” the
desperate star tweeted, in
a message that received
more than 189,000 likes
in under 24 hours. Love
her or loathe her ….. that
girl is funny.
FURY´S REVENGE DATE
BIG JOHN PULLS OUT
by Alex Trelinski
Tyson Fury says his
highly-anticipated rematch
with WBC heavyweight
champion Deontay Wilder
will take place on February
22nd 2020. Fury, 30, stopped
German Tom Schwarz in
round two in June in his
first fight since a draw with
Wilder in December - which
the Englishman felt he won.
Wilder is slated to defend
his belt against Luis Ortiz
but beating the Cuban
would allow a rematch
with Fury. “The rematch
has been confirmed and
signed, 22 February,” said
Fury. Speaking at an event
at Bradford’s Alhambra
Theatre, Fury added: “It’s
on, the rematch. This time I
am going to knock him out.”
“This time I haven’t been out
the ring for three years, this
time I haven’t been abusing
too much alcohol,” Fury says
any bout with Wilder would
take place at the MGM Grand
in Las Vegas, USA. But first
Wilder must face his own
return fight against Ortiz
in September, while Fury
expects his next contest to
take place in New York on
October 5th. Fury has said he
could face American Jarrell
Miller, who lost the chance
to take on Britain’s Anthony
Joshua in June after failing
three drugs tests.
NO HURRY FOR MURRAY
Andy Murray says
playing singles at the
by Alex Trelinski
US Open look “pretty
unlikely” as he
continues his return
from hip surgery.
Murray, who won
the title at Flushing
Meadows in 2012,
has been pulling in the
crowds at Wimbledon
alongside Serena
Williams in their
entertaining mixed
doubles partnership.
He won the men’s
doubles title at
Queen’s last month
in his first tournament
since undergoing a hip
resurfacing procedure
in January.”There is a
lot of stuff I need to
get done physically,”
said Murray, 32. The
three-time Grand
Slam champion
added: “I think it’s
pretty unlikely just
in terms of timing.”
“The amount of work
I need to do on the
court to get ready for
singles, the amount
of work I need to
put in off the court
to get myself strong
enough to play best
of five sets, it’s still
quite a way away,
unfortunately.” “I
would love to play.
I need to look pretty
long term with this.
I don’t want to be
having to go through
another big operation
in a few years’ time.
I want to make sure
the operation I’ve
had lasts for as long
as possible. To give
it the best chance, I
need to make sure
that I’m physically
really strong before
I get back on the
singles court.”Murray
said it was not his
intention to play
smaller tournaments
during the hardcourt
season in the US, but
was also unsure if he
would travel Stateside
to play doubles.
Two-time major winner
John Daly has withdrawn
from next week´s Open at
Royal Portrush after his
request to be allowed to use
a buggy was turned down.
The 1995 Open winner
used a buggy at the US
PGA Championship in May
because of a knee problem.
After the R&A rejected his
request, the 53-year-old said
he had would try to “play
through the pain” but has
since had a change of heart.
American Kevin Streelman
will replace Daly in the
field. Daly is exempt from
Sheffield Wednesday
boss Steve Bruce is being
considered for the vacant
manager’s position at
Newcastle United. Bruce,
who was born near Newcastle
and was a boyhood
Magpies fan, is on Sheffield
Wednesday’s pre-season tour
of Portugal. Rafael Benitez
left the Magpies when his
contract expired at the end
of June and has said the
by Alex Trelinski
qualifying, like all previous
Open champions, until he
is aged 60. The Open is
returning to Portrush for the
first time in 68 years from
Thursday 18th July. Fourtimes
major winner, Rory
McIlroy said this week that
the famous links course is
in great shape as he bids to
win on his home turf. The
world number three said that
he was proud of his part in
bringing the Open back to
his native Northern Ireland
for the first time since 1951.
HOME BOY TARGET
by Alex Trelinski
Premier League club “did not
share his vision”.Bruce was
appointed as Owls manager
in January before taking
charge of the Championship
side in February. The
58-year-old has managed 10
clubs with mixed success,
including a spell in charge
of Newcastle’s derby rivals
Sunderland.

SILVERSTONE SECURED
Britain´s Lewis Hamilton
will look for a sixth British
Grand Prix victory at
Silverstone on Sunday in the
knowledge that the race has
been secured with a new deal
taking it through to 2024.
Sunday´s race was due to be
the last after Silverstone ended
its contract because it was too
expensive. But after two years
of negotiations, Silverstone
and F1 bosses signed a new
contract this week. F1 chairman
Chase Carey described the race
at Silverstone as “an integral
by Alex Trelinski
part” of the future of the sport.
It´s the70th British GP race
this Sunday, with Hamilton
being pipped to first place by
Ferrari´s Sebastian Vettel last
year. Victory for the Brit would
make him the most successful
British GP winner of all time,
overtaking legends like Alain
Prost and Jim Clark. And while
Ferrari has the most victories at
a British GP - 17 to Mercedes’
six - few would bet against
Mercedes and Hamilton
getting the job done this year
after a return of six wins in
nine races so far. Ferrari will,
of course, having something to
say about that, especially after
the pace they showed at this
race a year ago, not to mention
Austria two weeks ago, while
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen
-winner at the Red Bull
Ring last time out-cannot be
discounted. World champion
Hamilton is 31 points clear
of team-mate Bottas in the
standings, with third-placed
Verstappen a massive 71 points
behind the Brit.
