FOR A
BETTER US
Events
Throughout the year, we hold many
family-friendly events that are open to
the entire community for people of all
ages and abilities to participate. All of
these happenings bring the Great Lakes
Bay Region together in support of our
great Cause.
Rise ‘n Shine 5K Walk & Run / Family Fun Fest
In 2018, the 2nd annual summer race featuring a 5K Walk & Run, a 1K kids race,
and free post-race Family Fun Fest was held! The Family Fun Fest was free to
the whole community and included a silent auction, games, face painting, hair
wraps, balloon twisting, bubble blowing, corn hole / can jam, henna tattoos,
coconut bowling, a bounce house and so much more! For the first time ever,
we included a kids mini-triathlon as part of the day’s events.
Serving as our largest fundraiser of the year, the Rise ‘n Shine event raised
$32,069 for our Financial Assistance Program.
Thank you to our various sponsors for your generous contributions, as well
as all the athletes who participated, the volunteers who motivated, and the
guests who were able to experience this great event for a great cause.

Jeff Buczek Memorial Scholarship
Fund
Jeff Buczek was a long time employee of the Dow Bay
Area Family YMCA and lifelong supporter of youth
sports in the Great Lakes Bay Region. In honor of Jeff’s
life and love for his community, the Jeff Buczek Memorial
Scholarship was established so local kids can participate
in youth sports and swim programs at the Dow Bay Area
Family YMCA completely free of charge. The 2018 year
end total in the Jeff Buczek Scholarship Fund was
$14, 270.
HALLOWEEN
SPOOKTACULAR
Our annual dodgeball tournament brought out many
excellent dodgers ranging from children aged 8 years
old, to college students, to adults! The dodgeball
tournament had another successful year raising $7,464
for the YMCA Financial Assistance Program in 2018.
This success is thanks to all of the youth and adult
teams that dove, ducked, and dodged; the volunteers;
and to our various sponsors.
Halloween Spooktacular
The Dow Bay Area Family YMCA’s annual Halloween
Spooktacular is a family-friendly event featuring activities
for all ages! The frightful delights included Pumpkin
Splash Patch in the pool, Track or Treat, Spooky Crafts,
a Photobooth, Bounce House, Zombie Dodgeball, and
a Costume Contest at the end of the night! This event
is provided free each year to our members and at a low
cost to our friends in the community.
Breakfast With Santa
The Dow Bay Area Family YMCA welcomed the
community to have breakfast with Santa again in 2018.
Over 400 people were served a hot meal thanks to the
generous support of the Bay Area Community Foundation
Youth Advisory Committee and Elizabeth J. Husband
Fund. This event offered a free meal to everyone in our
community and was open to the general public.

YMCA Summer Camps
Our YMCA Summer Camp programming
is tailored to give your kids a creative,
active, and engaging summer break
outside of school. Each week features a
specific theme that inspires healthy living,
encourages friendship making, and guides
campers to live our core values.
Childcare
The Dow Bay Area Family YMCA
provides enriching all-day childcare
and education for infants all the
way to Young 5’s at our stateof-the-art
curriculum is designed around the
Creative Curriculum, an educational
component with lesson plans that
support each child’s physical,
intellectual, emotional, social, and
language development. Our
a fun and safe environment to
Engineering for Kids
At the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA, we encourage
kids to be inventive and learn about the
ever-changing world of technology. Once a week,
children in our preschool and childcare programs
utilize the latest iPad apps to learn foundations
for reading, writing, mathematics, nutrition, art,
shapes, and phonics. Additionally, we’ve added
STEM programming to our preschool curriculum
so kids of all ages can benefit from exposure to
these topics at an early age.
Engineering for Kids offers STEM programs
for children ages 4 to 14, introducing them to
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
through a variety of workshops aimed at
developing problem solving skills.
Free Swim Lessons for
Bay County Students
Learning to swim at the YMCA is more than
stroke development; by creating Water Safety
Awareness, teaching Water Safety Skills, and
teaching our youth to swim, we help to keep
the water a safe and enjoyable place to be.
Through the gracious support of the Bay
Area Community Foundation, we were able to
extend our swim lesson programming coupled
with Safety Around Water skills to 75 third
graders at Washington Elementary for free.
We look forward to providing free lessons
for students at MacGregor and Washington
Elementary in 2019. As we move forward, our
goal is to provide free swim lessons to each
third grader in all of Bay County, encouraging
children to explore and gain confidence in the
water.
Safety Around Water
Drowning is the leading cause of death
in children under 5 years old. The
YMCA is passionate about diminishing
this statistic, and has produced the
Safety Around Water program aimed at
teaching participants the skills necessary
to play in and around water safely.
The Dow Bay Area Family YMCA can
provide drowning prevention courses
for FREE aimed at teaching children
essential water safety skills thanks to
the community impact partnership with
the United Way of Bay County.
Adaptive Swim
Lessons
The YMCA is committed to providing
programming that builds a healthy
mind, body, and spirit FOR ALL. This
includes our community members who
conquer life with a developmental
disability. Because of our community
impact partnership with the United Way
of Bay County, we are able to partner
with the Bay Arenac Intermediate
School District to provide our Adaptive
Swim Lessons for students who are
severely multiply impaired.
Becoming more comfortable in the
water has helped these students
to reduce spastic muscle tone and
participating in these lessons allowed
them to feel included in our community.
Health & Wellness
Many know the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA for our beautiful
gym and fitness facility. While our 96,400 sq. ft. facility includes
treadmills, weights, and machines, the YMCA is also active in
promoting health and wellness outside our walls. Programs such
as Tai-Chi at Carroll Park and Bootcamp at Veterans Memorial
Park allow the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA to deliver great
wellness programming to residents throughout the region.
We are more than just a gym. Through our various fitness
classes, Fit Challenges, and organized sports, we together build
community, promote comradery, and encourage teamwork.
Youth Sports
Youth sports are a fun and engaging way to practice the YMCA’s
core values. Kids develop important life lessons, including: positive
competition, fair play, and the value of participation over winning.
They also get a chance to improve their skills, make new friends, be
active with other kids, and learn to love a sport.
Adult Sports
It isn’t always easy to hit the gym, which is why the YMCA promotes
playing sports as an adult as a healthy alternative to running laps
and lifting weights. Our members practice healthy, active lifestyles
while also being a part of a team and having fun.
Free Youth Food Program
Partnering with Hidden Harvest helps us to exemplify our
Cause—to strengthen the foundations of our community
through Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social
Responsibility. By working together with other non-profits, we
create a stronger community. In 2018, our members collected
over 6,700 pounds of food for Hidden Harvest to distribute
locally.
The Dow Bay Area Family YMCA has a mission to fight hunger
and address food insecurity in the Bay County area through the
Free Youth Food Program. This program provides healthy snacks
and lunches to any child 18 years and younger. Throughout
2018, we served over 19,000 meals and over 24,000 snacks
to our community, almost tripling our goal for the year. We also
went beyond our walls and served at twelve additional locations
throughout the community.
Green Thumbs
Located at the corner of Adams and 11th
Streets, our Strong Roots, Green Thumbs
Community Garden has provided nutritional
and educational nourishment since 2012.
Led by student volunteers from Delta
College and Saginaw Valley State University,
our goal of the Strong Roots, Green Thumbs
community garden is to teach kids, including
Summer Camp participants, to grow, harvest
and prepare healthy
food.
Senior Luncheons
Four times each year, the Dow Bay Area Family
YMCA hosts a luncheon for our seniors. Meals
are provided at a very low cost and are served
by members of our leadership team. Our
seniors enjoy a delicious meal, fellowship, and
a brief presentation about what is happening
around the YMCA.
