Contributor - Poetry by Scott Valentine Principles of Capitalism Did you read the headlines yesterday? A caveman appeared in Central Park wearing nothing but a loincloth, a tangled mane on his head. A passerby mistook him for a performance artist, shoving a dollar in his hand. The caveman sniffed the cash and tossed it to the wind. He turned and ran from the man wearing the false skins. He ran until he found the pond, and he dove right in, catching a fish with his bare hands. A crowd gathered to watch the caveman eat the fish raw, and soon the cops arrived to arrest him for fishing without a license. Guns for Everyone! Raskolnikov strapped an axe under his shirt and split open the heads of two defenseless women. He saw the light fade from their eyes—that was his price to pay, and it was more than he could afford. If only he had an AK, then he could have averted his eyes. The distance from the barrel to the victim’s head stretches out elastic, and this section of space can be folded over until the lens becomes opaque. The terrible weight of taking a life is filtered out—it’s hard to imagine how the shower of skull fragments, blood and brains is connected to the slight motion of a finger, plus there’s no way you’d stain your Prada shoes. authorial magazine | 40
