the thing!
Once you’ve got that precious engagement ring on your finger, you’ll
probably never want to take it off – but, if you want to keep it in
pristine condition, you need to take care of it. Fine jewellers
Charles Nobel of New Milton advise that there are some times
when you should definitely not be wearing your engagement ring.
When you’re getting ready to go out: moisturisers, lotions, cosmetics, hair
spray and perfume can all damage or tarnish your ring and cause a build-up
of grime. Make sure your hands are completely clean and dry before you
replace your ring.
The same goes for cooking and cleaning. Not only can you easily distort your
ring on hard surfaces, like kitchen tops and bathroom counters, but you can
also do serious damage to the stone and setting. You can even potentially
alter the colour if you expose it to harsh chemicals like bleach and ammonia.
Leave your ring at home when you go to the gym or participate in sporting
activities. Pressure on the metal could change its shape and bend the claws
that hold the gemstone in place.
And as for swimming: the cold water of the sea will shrink your fingers,
making it much easier for your ring to disappear without trace – and it’s no
better in the pool, where the chlorine can damage it, or even in the shower,
where oily soaps could dull its sparkle and exfoliating soaps may scratch it.
If your engagement ring does get dirty, you can gently rinse it with hot water
and dishwashing liquid, then dry it with a cotton or linen towel before using
a clean polishing cloth for a sparkling finish.
Alternatively, Charles Nobel will clean it
professionally for you.
