Two From Millis Selected In National Hockey League Draft
Boldy, Moynihan Get The Nod
By KEN HAMWEY,
Staff Sports Writer
When Matthew Boldy was
chosen 12th by the Minnesota
Wild at the National Hockey’s
annual draft in June, the town
of Millis suddenly was front and
The Voice of Your Community
center when the talented 6-foot-
2, 196-pound left wing became
a first-round selection.
As the draft progressed into
the sixth round, Millis again
was in the spotlight after Patrick
Moynihan was chosen by the
New Jersey Devils. Both skaters,
who live in Millis and are good
friends, have scholarships to
Division 1 colleges — Boldy at
Boston College and Moynihan
at Providence College. Boldy, a
left wing, and Moynihan, who
can play center or right wing,
will play for their respective colleges
this winter.
The town of Millis isn’t exactly
a hotbed for producing
pro hockey prospects. Its high
school, which once fielded a
varsity squad in the Tri Valley
League in the 1970s, had to
dissolve that program. Now, if
a Millis High athlete wants to
play ice hockey, the school offers
prospective players a chance to
compete in a co-op venture with
Hopedale High.
When Boldy and Moynihan
had their names called at the
draft, their hometown not only
was publicized, but also was
mentioned in a plethora of Internet
stories.
Neither Boldy nor Moynihan
played for Millis High, but after
HOCKEY
continued on page 20
Matthew Boldy was chosen 12th by the Minnesota Wild in the first round.
Patrick Moynihan was chosen by the New Jersey Devils in the sixth round.
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at New Clyde Brown School
September 7th
September 3rd won’t be just
any first day of school for Millis
Kindergartners through fifth
graders. It will be the first time
students will attend the newlybuilt
Clyde F. Brown Elementary
School – and a return of the fifth
grade back to an elementary
school building in town. The
opening will be made official on
September 7th, at 10 a.m., with a
ribbon-cutting ceremony.
In fact, fifth graders will head
to the new building a little bit
early, to get to know the colorcoded
halls, front offices, gymnasium,
nurse’s areas, outdoor
classrooms, two playgrounds,
music room, STEAM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Arts
and Math) room, art room, cafeteria
and multimedia common
spaces. Late this month, those
older students of the school will
orient younger students and their
families to the school in “Find
Your Ways Days,” set to take
place on August 27th and 28th.
With the parking lot getting
poured this month, parents and
friends should know that the traffic
patterns will be very different
from before. The Clyde Brown
School website will be posting
new traffic patterns. While traffic
is being ironed out, parents
should also make sure that if
they need to sign their kids up
for programs or activities, they
should head over to the Millis
High School/Middle School to
take care of those needs.
“The building is relatively
complete, but we’re working
on punch lists, fixing up all the
stuff that needs to get fixed,”
said Diane Jurmain, who has
been working on this project
with Wayne Klocko. Each step
of the way gets completed and
then inspected, said Jurmain, in
mid-July. “What we’re doing over
the summer is roadwork, playgrounds,
curbs, parking, and the
basketball court,” she said. Once
the demolition of the old Clyde
Brown School was complete,
which was scheduled at press
time to take place on July 29th.
“We are in a really tight time
frame to get all of this stuff done,
and while we’re at it, we’re still
fixing up the school, which is all
normal on any project,” said Jurmain.
At press time, teachers’
materials were all delivered, as
well as books from the library.
Staff still faced a lot of training
on new equipment, such as new
phones and computers, as well as
the layout and lots of new processes,
said Jurmain.
Jurmain has been keeping
public apprised of updates to
the school as well as has posted
interior and aerial photos on
Facebook under “Millis School
Project.” She is pleased the project
has been completed on time
and on budget.
“I’m thrilled, because it’s a
PLEASE RECYCLE THIS PAPER AND PRESERVE OUR TREES
Elementary School in Millis posted on the “Millis School Project”
Facebook page. Check out the page for more photos as well as a video
tour. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held September 7th.
fabulous school,” says Jurmain.
She credits the whole collaborative
project team, which includes,
in addition to her and Mr.
Klocko, Project Designer Tappe
Architects, Project Manager
Compass Project Management,
and General Contractor Agostini-Bacon
Medway Army Band Concert
On Friday, July 5th, the town
of Medway welcomed the 215th
Army Band of the Massachusetts
National Guard, under the command
of CW3 Stephen Martins,
with Lt. Gen. L. Scott Rice, Director,
Air National Guard, the
Pentagon, Arlington, Virginia, as
honored guest.
Rice, who was Adjutant General
under Gov. Deval Patrick
and later, Gov. Charlie Baker, was
pleased to be returning to Massachusetts
with his wife, Nancy.
Medway, he noted, reminded
him of the small Massachusetts
town in which the couple raised
their own two children.
“Our purpose here is to get the
Air Force out and about into the
community,” said Rice. “When
you combine the Air Force, the
Air National Guard and the Air
Force Reserves, when we’re together,
we touch every community
in the United States. And so,
in light of that, our purpose is
really to say thanks to everyone,
because we are nothing in the
military without our community,
and our community is not able to
function without us.”
The 40-member 215th Army
Band, which included Medway
in its two-week summer concert
tour, featured seven different ensembles,
even including a fife and
drum band and New Orleans
marching brass band in addition
to the traditional concert band.
In fact, Director Stephen Martins
noted that the band can play
up to 10 different genres.
This New Orleans-style brass band was just one of several ensembles
featured in a July 5th concert by the 215th Army Band.
Many veterans came out for the 215th Army Band concert, including
James Hayes, (l) and Col. Michael Matondi (r), two World War II veterans
who have both seen 99 years, shown with Lt. Gen. Rice (center). Photo
by Tim Rice Photography
Shown, from left, is Col. Michael Matondi (RET) of Medway, Nancy Rice,
and Lt. Gen. L. Scott Rice, Director of the Air National Guard.
Members of the band even engaged the audience, dancing to big band
favorites.
2nd Annual Medway Police Chase August 31, 2019
By J.D. O’Gara
Get ready to run (or walk!) in
the second annual Medway Police
Chase, a glow run, set to take
place at the very end of August,
from 7 – 11 p.m. on Saturday,
August 31st, 2019 at Medway
High School, 88 Summer Street,
Medway. The event will feature
a 5K road race and a kids’ fun
run, and it benefits the Medway
Police Association.
Medway Police Officer Lauren
Swarthout, who is organizing
the event with Sgt. Jason Brennan,
says that last year’s event,
which was put together very
quickly, had a surprising turnout
of about 200 people, twice the
number she had expected.
“We were shocked,” says
Swarthout. “It’s our biggest fundraiser,
and it’ll probably end up
being the only one we do. Last
year was the perfect day. It could
not have been better.”
She hopes that this year, with
more time to plan, that the nighttime
fundraiser is even more successful.
This Kids Fun Run will take
place at 8:30 p.m. and is one mile
long. The 5K run will start at 9
p.m.
Registration on site begins
at 7:30 p.m., but you can register
first 100 registrants will receive a
and walkers are encouraged
to wear glow-in-the-dark attire
to make the event more festive.
T-shirts will also be available for
purchase.
“We usually work with the
Scouts, MABA, the Lions Club,
and we also do a winter present
drive,” says the officer. The group
donates to two local scholarships
as well as to causes in Medway,”
she says.
As for the evening race,
Swarthout says last year’s worked
out well. “Most races are early
Saturday morning. I think a lot
of people are turned off by that.
Night was something different.
We wanted to do the glow thing
and didn’t want to do a basic 5K
that’s so common in Medway.”
Because it’s a run organized
by the police, she says, the event
has the resources it needs.
“We have 20 people to control
traffic, cruisers and the lighting,
and all the bike officers ride
around,” she says. “We can control
safety pretty well, and we just
all do it for free, and obviously,
everyone (all police officers)
goes.”
There will be refreshments
available, says Swarthout, although
not all of the food trucks
had yet been confirmed at press
time. “Last year we had Pangea,
out of Medway,” she says, and
there will likely be an ice cream
truck and shaved ice. Local businesses
donated water for the runners
at last year’s event as well.
Swarthout says that now, with
more planning, the Medway
Police Association will be able
to give folks more notice, which
will be useful for residents of
Adams, Winthrop, Lovering and
Summer Streets. Some of those
residents, she says, would have
liked a bit more notice last year,
a request Swarthout hopes to accommodate
this year with media
notice and flyers.
Overall, though, the Police
Chase was well received.
“We got really good feedback
last year, and I hope people come
back and do it again, and I just
hope we can do it for many years.
It was such a good feeling, stressful
because it was so quick getting
it together, but seeing how much
everyone enjoyed it, I was on a
high for a few days. It was awesome.”
With Medway Schools beginning
Come Have Some Fun with the Millis PD!
Town Police to Host Event as Part of
National Night Out, August 6th
By J.D. O’Gara
How about a night out, courtesy
of the Millis Police Department?
On Tuesday, August 6th,
from 4-8 p.m., the Millis Police
invite town residents out to
the Millis Town Fields, outside
Millis Town Hall, for National
Night Out. This is the first year
that the town has become one
of the 16,000 who take part in
this annual community-building
campaign that promotes policecommunity
partnerships and
neighborhood camaraderie
aimed at making neighborhoods
safer, more caring places to live.
“We as a police department
are putting this event on for free,”
says Officer Farrah Gray. “All police
officers are on deck – all of us
will have our station. We’re really
excited! All the officers here love
Millis. A lot of them have grown
up here, and those who haven’t
have made it into part of their
community. We’re really looking
forward to spending the night
with all of the residents in a positive
manner.”
The national event began in
August of 1984 through an established
network of law enforcement
agencies, neighborhood
watch groups, civic groups, state
and regional crime prevention associations
and volunteers across
the nation. The first annual National
Night Out involved 2.5
million neighbors across 400
communities in 23 states. The
idea is to strengthen the relationship
between neighbors and law
enforcement while bringing back
a true sense of community under
positive circumstances.
Some of the night’s activities
include:
• A K9 demonstration by Westwood
K9 Officer Pillai of
Westwood Police and his K9
Duke
• A 35-foot adrenaline rush
Adventure Obstacle Course
• A Dog-Walker Watch presentation
by Officer Gonzalez
and Officer Sullivan, that
encourages neighbors to assist
the Millis Police as extra eyes
and ears while out walking
their dogs. Leashed dogs, in
fact, are invited, and the first
100 dogs will receive a red
“Dog Walker Watch” bandana.
• A Smaller Bouncy House for
little ones
• A Bicycle Course with Motorcycle
Unit Officer Afienko,
with free helmets
• An Inflatable Baseball Toss
with booths. Among them are:
Tri-County Student’s Project Aims for the Stars – Literally
By J.D. O’Gara
When you go to high school,
probably the last thing you expect
to do is create a part that
will be used by NASA, but that’s
exactly what Medway resident
and recent graduate Dominic
Parrella was able to do as an
Technical High School in Franklin.
The school is part of NASA’s
HUNCH program (High School
Students Unite with NASA
to Create Hardware), and advanced
manufacturing is part of
the engineering shop. The school
even has an advanced manufacturing
facility.
“HUNCH prototype and design
is where NASA has a list of
problems, and they put it out to
all the schools that do HUNCH,”
explains Parrella. “NASA would
send us a blueprint, and we had
to create that project with all
the tolerances and features they
want. They sent us the metal they
wanted it to be in. Our dimension
could only be 1/5000th of
an inch below the target dimension.”
Dominic came in on the project
after another student had
begun it, working with teacher
Jeffrey McCall.
“A different student sautered
the project early in the year, but
he went out on coop,” says Mc-
Call. “Dom picked it up right
after we went through the design
phase very early on in the project.”
“We had to actually make
the part,” says Dominic, of the
ISS flight hardware parts, called
actuators. “Mr. McCall went
through the designing the tool
paths, and so I had to do all the
Shown is recent Tri-County graduate Dominic Parrella, who got a realworld
experience creating a part for NASA through its HUNCH program
and the advanced manufacturing facility at the school.
set-up work on the machine, setting
up the softjaws and getting
tool offsets and work offsets. After
we actually milled out the pieces,
I had to do the deburring on the
edges to make sure they’re not
sharp—the quality control (QC)
work, and (make sure) all the dimensions
were the right dimensions.
It doesn’t matter if it looks
good as much as if it’s right. It’s
definitely more important to get
the right dimensions. If you have
it wrong, it’s just not going to
work.”
“This is actually (Tri-County’s)
1st year that we had been
manufacturing hardware for
(NASA),” says Jeffrey McCall,
who began three years ago at the
school, taking over where teacher
Kristin Maggis had left off with
the HUNCH program. “We had
been working on the prototype,
such as the things astronauts can
wasn’t until this year that we really
had the capacity to do something
like that.”
“Probably the most impressive
part of this was that we milled 11
parts out, and those were our first
11 parts,” says Dominic. “All 11
of them were perfect, and they
loved the parts. They had great
surface finishes, no burrs, no
sharp edges. The actuators had
to fit into other small pieces.”
Dominic realizes he had a
unique opportunity in working
on this project.
“The project was almost a
simulation, a real job you’d have
in a real manufacturing facility.
We had a lot of unique teaching
moments, and it was a really
fun experience,” says Dominic,
who benefitted by being the sole
student working on the project
with Mr. McCall. “There are
certain lessons I don’t think Mr.
McCall would have been able
to teach.” Parrella, who’ll be
headed to UMass Dartmouth for
mechanical engineering in the
fall, is grateful, he says, for the
time Mr. McCall took to teach
him. “He could very well have
just instantly fixed the project
without me knowing, but he took
the time and purposefully taught
me every time. The project overall
was just an amazing learning
experience.”
“So, a lot of these projects that
we’re doing, this project in particular,
you don’t always know the
end result of what you’re making
is. You may not have that mating
part. We made an actuator, and it
actually goes to some other part
that another school is making. It’s
important that they fit together,
and that is a real-world scenario,
on top of doing something for
NASA, which is a highly recognizable
organization. It’s quite an
opportunity for a young kid to be
able to do something like that.”
also getting a tight job (
There’s one more perk
to working with the NASA
HUNCH program, says Dom.
“My name’s going to be up in
space twice,” he says.
iStent Inject for Glaucoma
Living Healthy
By: Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.
Milford Franklin Eye Center
Glaucoma is a progressive
disease of the optic nerve which
works like a cable, connecting
the eye and the brain. Glaucoma
happens when the pressure inside
the eye is higher than the optic
nerve can withstand. The most
common form of glaucoma is
silent in the beginning but can
cause a patient to slowly lose the
vision if left untreated, starting
with the peripheral vision. The
most frustrating characteristic of
glaucoma is that for many years,
the loss of vision will go unnoticed
by a patient.
The optic nerve is like a cable
made up of over 1 million nerve
fibers that carry the information
collected by your eye (retina) to
the visual cortex of the brain for
processing. Glaucoma slowly, decreases
the ability of your optic
nerve to carry this information to
your brain.
The buildup of pressure,
in your eye, causes glaucoma.
There are currently two basic
theories as to why excessive ocular
pressure causes glaucoma.
Either high intra-ocular pressure
decreases blood flow to the optic
nerve, or high pressure, over
time, physically crushes and kills
the individual nerve fibers.
At first, open-angle glaucoma
has no symptoms. Vision stays
normal, and there is no pain.
As glaucoma remains untreated,
people may notice that although
they see clearly in front of them,
they miss objects to the side and
out of the corner of their eye.
It may seem as though they are
looking through a tunnel. Over
time, the remaining vision may
decrease until there is no vision
left. Optic nerve damage caused
by glaucoma is permanent;
therefore, it is important to seek
treatment in the early stages of
the disease.
Glaucoma is a lifelong disease
that will always require treatment.
Glaucoma is much like hypertension
and diabetes. We can
control these diseases, however
we cannot, as of yet, cure them.
Today there are numerous ophthalmic
medications available to
us in the treatment of glaucoma.
Some are eye drops that are used
only once a day; others are used
up to four times a day. More
than one medication may be
used to treat glaucoma. If glaucoma
cannot be controlled with
medications other procedures,
including laser and surgery may
be considered.
The laser can be used in a focused
beam of light to treat the
drainage angle of the eye in an
additional attempt to lower the
pressure. This surgery makes it
easier for fluid to flow out of the
front part of the eye, decreasing
pressure inside the eye. Selective
laser trabeculoplasty or SLT is
the name of the laser procedure
used to lower the pressure. SLT
has been in use for more than 25
years in the United States and
around the world.
If drops and SLT are not controlling
the pressure, glaucoma
surgery may be needed. Minimally
invasive glaucoma surgery
is a newer approach to controlling
pressure. When compared
to classical glaucoma surgery,
this approach leads to much
less risk of complications. The
iStent inject is small device that
can be used during this type of
minimally invasive surgery and
can help reduce pressure inside
the eye. The iStent inject can
be performed as a stand-alone
surgery or if cataract surgery is
panned, at the same time as cataract
surgery.
The iStent inject consists of
two very small, titanium stents
that are surgically implanted
into the trabecular meshwork
(the tissue that drains fluid away
Optical
Shop
On-Site
from the eye). The stents create
tiny channels that fluid can drain
through, which helps to lower eye
pressure. Following the surgery,
most patients are able to stop or
reduce the number of eye drops
they use to treat their glaucoma.
The published data over the
last few years has shown that the
iStent inject system is effective at
lowering eye pressure. The procedure
is very quick. Through a
mini-incision in the front of the
eye, a special surgical instrument
is used to implant the stent into
the drainage tissue. A second
stent is implanted in a different
area of the tissue, before the instrument
is removed from the
eye. In experienced hands, the
iStent inject takes roughly two
minutes to insert.
At Milford Franklin Eye Center,
Millis Council on Aging Opens Age-Friendly Fitness Room
Thanks to $15K Donation from Middlesex Savings Bank
On Friday, June 28th, the Millis
Council on Aging dedicated
a new age-friendly fitness room,
made possible through funds
from a $15,000 donation from
Middlesex Savings Bank.
The Age Friendly Fitness
Room will be available to Senior
Center visitors and provide
an age friendly space for those
seniors who want to use lowimpact
fitness machines that are
easy to use and gentle on aging
joints and muscles. This gym will
provide a supportive atmosphere
that is comfortable for senior
adults and will keep them coming
back.
“We are happy to be able to
provide a program that encourages
senior adults to be physically
and socially active in an effort to
maintain their health” said Patty
Kayo, Director of the Millis
Council on Aging. “We are very
grateful to the Middlesex Savings
Bank in assisting us with this program.
Without their assistance,
we would not be able to offer this
On Friday, June 28th, the Millis Council on Aging celebrated the opening of its age-appropriate fitness room. Exercise equipment for this room
was purchased with funds from a $15,000 donation from Middlesex Savings Bank.
wonderful opportunity to our senior
residents.”
“With this gift, we want to
recognize the honorable work
that senior centers and councils
on aging do in our community,”
said Mike McAuliffe, president
and CEO of Middlesex Savings
Bank. “We hope the funding
helps support these organizations
provide on-going quality programs
for our local seniors.”
The $15,000 gift to the Millis
Council on Aging is part of a
cumulative gift of $1.4 million
that Middlesex Savings Bank distributed
to 84 non-profit organizations
including senior centers,
libraries and food pantries within
the Bank’s retail branch territory.
Through its charitable foundation,
Middlesex Savings made
donations in all towns that have
its bank branches – $50,000
apiece, with $20,000 to each
town’s food pantry, $15,000
to public library groups and
$15,000 for town senior centers.
Towns were free to spend the donations
in any way they needed,
no strings attached, said Carol
Brown, Regional Branch Manager
for Middlesex Savings Bank.
“We tried to benefit a wide range
of groups,” she said. The groups
chosen benefitted a large population
in each town.
“Our bank is doing well.
We’re a strong, healthy bank, and
the community is a huge part of
that,” said Brown. Supporting
the community, she says, is part
of the bank’s mission, “and we
wanted to thank our customers
and the community.”
Millis seniors can join the fitness
room for $100 a year.
“The best thing about it is
the electronic access,” says Patty
Kayo, director of the Millis Senior
Center. “As long as town
hall is open, people can use that
room.”
In addition to the equipment,
the room has a television and will
be air-conditioned. Although seniors
do need to have a health
clearance from their physician to
use the space for liability reasons,
they will have free range over
their workouts.
“Only four out of 351 senior
centers offer an unsupervised
fitness room,” says Kayo, who
notes that the room is for exercise,
not physical therapy sessions.
An added benefit, typical
of any senior center, is that not
only will Millis seniors be able to
keep fit, but they will also be able
to socialize with other seniors.
“That, I think, is the biggest
part,” says Kayo.

At the showcase, students
presented their projects to doctors
and patients of the cerebral
palsy unit of Boston Children’s
Hospital. Gov. Charlie Baker and
Boston Children’s Hospital CEO
Sandra Fenwick also attended
the showcase and met with students
in the competition.
“This showcase was such a
wonderful opportunity for our
students to challenge themselves,”
Superintendent Pires
said. “They created incredibly
thoughtful, useful projects, and
it’s so exciting to see them using
the knowledge they gained this
school year to create something
meaningful.”
Anderson, Copeland, Reardon
and Vallieres were awarded
the Practitioners’ Pick award at
the showcase, which is given to
the project with the most realworld
promise at the competition
each year. The four students built
a multi-functional fidget contraption
for the competition, which
they designed to support cognitive,
sensory and physical therapy
for children ages one through
12 with cerebral palsy. The toy
features matching, spinning, listening
and drawing games for
patients to play independently or
with an occupational therapist.
These features of the toy were
designed to engage the cerebral
palsy patient’s imagination and
senses while strengthening eyehand
coordination.
MacNeil and Bariteau partnered
to build a “Toys for Kids
Fruit Matcher” toy for the showcase
as well, which tasks the patient
with matching a soft, squishy
“fruit” to a cup the same color
as that fruit. MacNeil and Bariteau
designed the toy to provide
cognitive, physical and sensory
therapy to children with cerebral
palsy during occupational therapy,
and to help patients stretch
their finger and hand muscles.
“Project Lead the Way has
done a wonderful job of engaging
our students and making
them excited to learn about
STEM topics,” said Medway
Middle School Principal Craig
Juelis. “This showcase gave
students an opportunity to see
first-hand how the topics they’re
learning about in class can be applied
to help others and make an
impact in the world, and that’s
truly incredible. Congratulations
to each of these students on a job
well done.”
Project Lead The Way is an
initiative of Mass STEM Hub,
an organization providing access
to and support for premier
STEM programming. Project
Lead The Way aims to make
STEM part of students’ regular
school day. The program offers
K-12 curriculum in engineering,
computer science, and biomedical
science that engages students
in problem-solving, critical
thinking, collaboration and communication.
A recent study revealed that
26% of workers plan on working
until the age of 70.1 Some may
decide to stay in the workforce
because they enjoy working, but
what about those who have different
ideas about how they want
to spend their golden years?
The good news is that for certain
people, there may be a solution.
New York Life conducted
research that shows that Baby
Boomers might be able to retire
up to two years sooner than
planned by including a deferred
income annuity in their retirement
portfolios.
Ralph Breaks the Internet
Typically, deferred income
annuities are positioned as products
that can be included in retirement
portfolios to guarantee
lifetime income in the future and
help mitigate the risk of outliving
retirement savings. Considering
that only 24% of Baby Boomers
are confident that they will
have enough savings to last for
retirement, those are certainly
important benefits.2 However,
an additional benefit could be an
earlier retirement start date.
Analysis shows that in certain
scenarios, purchasing a deferred
income annuity in pre-retirement
years allows individuals to retire
up to two years earlier without
incurring additional risk – as
measured by the probability of
running out of money during the
retiree’s projected retirement.3
That means two more years to
spend traveling, visiting with
grandchildren, and enjoying life
without work.
If you’re ready to get a head
start on your retirement, it may
be time to take a look at your retirement
portfolio to understand
what changes you can make to
get there sooner. Speak with your
financial professional to help ensure
that you’re headed towards a
secure and satisfying retirement.
HOCKEY
continued from page 1
the draft, they noted how unusual
it was for a small town to
be thrust into hockey’s limelight.
“It’s crazy how a small town has
two hockey players going to Division
1 colleges, and both getting
drafted by NHL teams,’’ Boldy
emphasized. Moynihan said:
“It doesn’t matter where you’re
from. If you’ve got passion for a
sport and an intense work ethic,
good things happen.’’
The 18-year-old Moynihan is
a native of Millis. He attended
the Clyde Brown Elementary
School (K-through Grade 4) and
his middle school years (Grades
5-8) were at the junior-senior
high school. He later attended
Noble & Greenough in Dedham
as a freshman and sophomore
before leaving for the National
Team Development Program in
Michigan.
Also 18, Boldy was born in
Millville and attended elementary
school there. He later lived
in Hopedale before moving to
Millis. While in Millis, he chose to
attend Medway schools (Grades
4-9). As a freshman at Medway
High, he hit .400 in baseball on
the frosh squad and he was the
No. 3 golfer on the varsity. As a
sophomore, he enrolled at the
Dexter School in Brookline before
joining the national development
program.
Boldy, who played youth
hockey for seven years with the
South Shore Kings in Foxboro,
developed a love for hockey by
watching his older brother (Mike)
compete. Moynihan played
nine years of junior hockey in
Marlboro with the Minuteman
Flames.
Both were excited to be
drafted after spending two years
in the national program with the
under-18 team that competed
in the United States Hockey
League. They both battled junior
league competition and
also faced off against colleges
like Harvard, Boston University,
North Dakota and Dartmouth.
The 6-foot-2, 196-pound Boldy
scored 33 goals and had 48 assists
in 64 games last season while
Moynihan scored 19 goals and
assisted on 27 others in 64 contests.
“I was a bit nervous,’’ said
Boldy, who attended the draft in
Vancouver. “I wasn’t sure where
I’d go but it’s a dream come true.
I’m super excited. Minnesota is
an awesome place to play and
to live. But, what’s important is
to establish myself as a quality
player at BC. I’ll take it one year
at a time and see what happens.’’
Moynihan, who’ll be facing
Boldy when PC battles the Eagles
in Hockey East action, was
thrilled to be selected by New
Jersey. “It’s an unbelievable feeling,’’
he said. “The Devils are a
great organization. I grew up as
a Bruins fan and thought about
a pro hockey career since the
fourth grade. But, I’ll go one day
at a time and strive to be the best
I can be at PC. I’d like to help
them win a championship.’’
The 5-foot-11, 183-pound
Moynihan watched the draft
with his parents (Patrice and
Michael) and twin sister (Ciara)
in Millis. He rates a victory over
Canada in the Under-18 World
Championships in Sweden as his
most memorable game. “It was
my last game for the national
team and the U.S. beat Canada
for a bronze medal,’’ he recalled.
“Canada is our rival and it’s always
a challenge to defeat them.
I didn’t get any points but it’s a
game I’ll always remember.’’
Boldy’s effort in the All-American
Prospects Game in Minnesota
during his second year with
the development program rates
No. 1. He scored two goals, including
the game-tying tally with
1:07 left in regulation, and assisted
on the game-winning goal
with just 36 seconds left in the
game. The then-17-year-old had
a team-high six shots on goal in
a 6-4 victory in the annual game
that showcases top Americanborn
NHL draft prospects.
“I was chosen as the MVP,’’
he noted. “There were a lot of
scouts at the game and it was
kind of ironic that the game
was played at the XCel Energy
Center, which is the Minnesota
Wild’s home arena.’’
Boldy said that getting selected
12th in the draft is “cool’’
but he’s acutely aware that it
doesn’t mean much. “It’s what
happens later,’’ he emphasized.
“It’s about what you do after
signing a contract.’’
Both skaters have similar
strengths that should be factors
as they progress through college
and more than likely in a minorleague
affiliate after they sign
contracts. Boldy is skilled and
technically solid. He’s also mentally
and physically tough, has a
high hockey IQ, his shot is hard,
and his release is quick. Moynihan
is also a high IQ player who’s
versatile, focuses on leadership
and also has a hard shot. Mentally
tough, he’s also quick on his
feet.
Immediately after the draft,
Boldy attended the Wild’s rookie
orientation camp. “It was a fiveday
stretch,’’ he said. “The days
were all good and I had fun. We
were watched closely.’’
The 2019 NHL draft had
a Millis flavor in the first and
sixth rounds. Boldy and Moynihan
pursued their dream to play
hockey in college and in the
pros by competing in a national
program, and they both were
drafted.
But, best of all, they know
their roots. As Moynihan concluded:
“Going to Millis schools
was a good time; it’s a small town
where everyone knows each
other. And, I’ve got a great group
of friends.’’
Matthew Boldy and Patrick
Moynihan should be top-notch
college and pro hockey players
going forward and they’re already
outstanding ambassadors
for their hometown.
Whalen Looks Back on Her
Softball Success in Millis
Sports
By Christopher Tremblay,
Staff Sports Writer
Millis’s Cheyenne Whalen
has been playing softball as long
as she can remember. In fact, she
originally began with whiffle ball
before eventually joining the Millis
Youth Softball Program. Softball
was a big part of her life and
was something that she wanted
to do as much as she could, so
she began playing club softball
during the off-season. Whalen
played for the U12 Central Mass
Thunder, the U14 and U18
Metro West Thunder.
With her high school career
on the softball diamond now
complete and college fast approaching,
Whalen is hoping that
her athletic career will continue.
Whalen is headed to James Madison
University in Harrisburg,
Virginia where she is hoping to
play softball for the Division 1
school. The Dukes went 20-1 in
the Colonial Athletic Association
to capture the title and were
51-10 overall this past season.
“I’m contemplating on trying
out for the team, but I’m not
sure if I’d be able to commit to
playing softball and continue
studying academically,” the Millis
athlete said. “I’ll probably try
out for the team to see if I can
make it, but most likely I think
I’ll be playing club or intramural
softball.”
Although playing in the collegiate
level is still up in the air,
Whalen has enjoyed her softball
career while at Millis. In the beginning,
she found herself behind
the plate and by the time
she got to the high school, she
was switched to the outfield for a
brief period of time.
“For my club teams, I was
playing the outfield and was
comfortable with the position
so the switch to it in high school
was no problem for me,” she
said. “But then about half way
through my freshman season,
our senior shortstop got hurt and
the coach moved me there, and
that’s where I played the last 3 ½
seasons for Millis.”
Making the move to shortstop,
Whalen found a bit nerve
racking at first, as she had never
played the infield prior to Coach
RJ Maturo moving her there.
“There is a lot that goes
into playing that position, like
you need to know what side of
the base to go to depending on
where the ball is hit, but you get
used to it. By the end of that year,
I was very comfortable playing
the position.”
The Mohawks Coach never
had any doubt in his mind that
the then freshman would pick up
the position.
“She’s a smart kid with great
athletic instincts and knows the
game,” Maturo said. “She started
off already having solid softball
skills as a freshman and then she
worked on the intangibles and
improved upon the little things
to become the softball player she
is today.”
As a four-year starter, three
and a half of those at shortstop,
the Millis native came to love the
position.
“I did love playing catcher
when I was playing it, but I
haven’t played there in such a
long time,” Whalen said. “Shortstop
became my top position as
I feel that I’m better suited there
and really enjoy the action; there
is so much more action at shortstop
than in the outfield.”
Millis’ Cheyenne Whalen will head to James Madison University in
Harrisburg, VA, this fall. She plans to try out for the Division I softball
team, but academics will be her priority.
Although Maturo believes
that no matter where Whalen is
playing she is at the top of her
game, but he finds her ability at
the infield position tome more
enjoyable.
“When she is on her game,
she is fun to watch,” he said.
“You never know what she’s
going to do, long throws from
the hole, turning double plays,
whatever it is.”
At the plate, Whalen has always
been a big hitter for the
Mohawks hitting in the third or
fourth slot in the lineup for Maturo.
With a month left before she
departs to head south to college
Whalen looks back upon her career
with Millis and only hopes
that she can take that with her to
the James Madison softball team.
Millis Theatre Group
Announces Auditions
for Ken Ludwig’s
Baskerville, a
Comedy, Directed by
Mark Prokes
From Samuel French – “Comedic
genius Ken Ludwig (Lend
Me a Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo)
transforms Arthur Conan
Doyle’s classic The Hound of
the Baskervilles into a murderously
funny adventure. Sherlock
Holmes is on the case. The male
heirs of the Baskerville line are
being dispatched one by one. To
find their ingenious killer, Holmes
and Watson must brave the desolate
moors before a family curse
dooms its newest heir. Watch as
our intrepid investigators try to
escape a dizzying web of clues,
silly accents, disguises, and deceit
as five actors deftly portray more
than forty characters. Does a
wild hellhound prowl the moors
of Devonshire? Can our heroes
discover the truth in time?”
The show is performed in total
by only 5 ACTORS! One actor
each portrays Sherlock Holmes
and Dr. John Watson, the other
but not required for the audition.
Gray is Here to Stay in
Home Designs
Decorating a home in neutral
tones has long been recommended
as a way to sell a home
quickly. But the color gray also
provides a blank canvas for
homeowners who have no intention
of putting their homes on
the market anytime soon.
Beige and white have long
been go-to colors for neutral living
spaces. But many interior
decorators now look to gray as
the neutral color of choice.
Design experts advise that
gray has a broad range. Gray
can include everything from silver
to charcoal to a dusty cloud.
According to the trendsetters at
Glidden Paints, gray coordinates
well with other colors. Plus, the
neutral appeal of gray boasts a
timeless quality.
Gray is not a clear-cut color
that’s simply a 50-50 blend of
white and black. Gray has subtle
nuances that can lean toward
blues, greens, taupes, and more
depending on the lighting and
surrounding furnishings. That
means that homeowners who are
ready to replace their furniture
or accessories need not necessarily
repaint if they’ve previously
decorated in shades of gray.
Individuals need only replace
small items to produce a big effect
in rooms where gray is dominant.
Because gray is so neutral,
it works with soft, calming colors
in various pastels, but equally
as well with bright reds, yellow
and oranges, according to Scott
Bodenner, a Brooklyn-based textile
designer.
Gray also is a predominant
color in natural stones used
throughout homes in entryways,
bathrooms and kitchens. It can
make design sense to maintain
continuity throughout by dabbling
in gray elsewhere.
Designers have shown how
gray does not have to be cold,
industrial or gloomy. It can be
sophisticated in just about any
room of the house. More designers
are now leaning toward
warmer variations of gray, such
as taupes and blends dubbed
“greige,” that are beautiful but
not as stark as pure gray.
Client Testimonial to Laina Kaplan:
“I’m sitting at my desk at work staring out the window thinking, “What the heck
happened here? This wonderful woman came into our lives, helped us get a house FULL
of stuff decluttered, and staged; got the best photographer, and then sold the house the
first minute we put it on the market to a really great buyer!” That’s what I was thinking.
You are THE best realtor I have ever dealt with (and you are a lot of fun too-you throw a
heck of a good party on top of it all)! Thank you, Laina!!!!!” - Suzanne atryzek, Medway
