PHONE THIEVES NABBED
HAPPY
HOLIDAYS!
by Alex Trelinski
A FOUR-STRONG Madridbased
gang that stole
top-of-the-range mobile
phones from bars and
nightclubs in Benidorm
has been arrested by the
National Police.
Two men and two women
aged between 19 and 25, of
Spanish and Moroccan nationalities,
ran an operation
which took advantage of the
fact that people would not be
fully focused on personal security
whilst having a good
night out.
The National Police discovered
that the group would
make trips from Madrid to
Benidorm to stage their robberies,
taking phones out
of bags, as well as helping
themselves to any money.
Two of the gang were literally
caught in the act and
arrested whilst trying to put
a hand into a bag in a club.
The other two were arrested
the following morning,
as they tried to leave
some rental accommodation
with four suitcases, and
struggled to explain why hey
had so many mobile phones
on them.
Authorities managed to
recover a total of 74 high-end
mobile phones.
Recovered units
Jail and big fine for have-a-go-hero
MANY people and parts of the
press are outraged at the sentence
handed down to a young
man involved in an accidental
killing after stopping a mugger.
The incident happened in Fuengirola
in 2015 when a known drug
addict and career criminal, Pedro
TT aged 41, snatched a woman’s
bag. The defendant, Borja WV aged
22, intervened and, in the ensuing
struggle, struck the thief twice
about the head. He landed badly
and went into a coma that he died
from two days later.
The prosecutors case was that
Borja did not use reasonable force
although the defence team said that
A Valencian court has sentenced
a man to 15 years in jail after
finding him guilty of repeated
child abuse of the daughter of
his partner.
The abuse started in Castellon in
2007 when the victim was just ten
years old and continued until 2013
when she reported the attacks. At
that time she had been diagnosed
as suffering from chronic post traumatic
stress disorder and had suicidal
thoughts. Tragically she killed
herself in January 2017. The court
heard how the defendant had ready
access to the girl as he used to pick
her up from school. He would take
her to his home to play with his dogs
and soon began abusing her, something
that soon turned to full rape,
often with aggression and even involving
tying the child up.
by Simon Russell
he hit out in self defence and had
never intended to harm the other
man. However last week the court
ruled against him and sentenced
him to two years in jail and a fine of
€180,000. They said that the blows
were struck after the bag had been
retrieved and were a disproportionate
use of force. The young man
also left the scene despite the thief
clearly being badly hurt.
In a further twist the victim’s
daughters have said they are unconcerned
about the defendant
serving the jail term if the fine is
paid. Other commentators have
said that the fine is disproportionate
as Pedro TT had never provided
for his children, spending all his
time and money on drugs. Borja
is said to be half Spanish and half
British, a keen sportsman who was
working in family estate agency
business and studying for a degree.
Many have said that his life is now
in tatters all due to an altruistic
act for a stranger, something which
sends out the wrong message to
young people. Right wing party Vox
clearly agree as they have raised
about €110,000 to help with the defendant’s
costs and fines. Borja initially
turned this cash down but is
now understood to have accepted it.
Finance Feature
provided by...
What you should expect from
a good financial advisor?
REGULATION: Before your appointment
it is essential you check the
regulation of the firm you are speaking
to. Chorus make this as easy as possible
– our license numbers are listed on all
our articles, advertising, business cards,
email footers, and, via our website’s
‘Regulation’ tab, you can directly visit
our listings on the websites of the UK
FCA, the Gibraltar FSC and the Spanish
DGS and CNMV, and see details of all
our various licenses and permissions.
There should never be any confusion or
doubt as to how the firm you are speaking
to are regulated, and there is never
an excuse not to display this clearly on
all literature. If you can’t find license
numbers and verify them yourself,
simply walk away.
FEES: Your advisor should always tell
you very clearly how they are remunerated
and give you an exact breakdown of
all fees. Ensure you have the following
fees confirmed before signing anything:
1) The investment vehicle or ‘wrapper’,
for example a platform or
bond, will normally be structured
in one of two ways: No tie-in,
but a set-up fee payable to your
advisor, or an annual fee that is
tied-in for a set number of years.
You shouldn’t normally see both a
tie-in and a set-up fee, as this may
mean your advisor is trying to pay
themselves twice! If you are being
tied-in, always get a like-for-like
quote elsewhere before signing
Algar
any paperwork. At Chorus, to
make this as easy as possible, we
can even do this by email, and
promise to provide it within 24
hours.
2) An annual advisor fee – this
covers servicing and portfolio
management. At Chorus you
would not usually pay more than
0.75% for this, and the larger the
investment, the lower the fee.
3) The fees charged by each individual
fund in your portfolio – be
very weary of this fee. Fair annual
fees for the highest quality, FCA
regulated funds are between 0.2%
and 1.2% per annum, any more
than this should cause concern.
The reality is, as IFAs we need to win
your business – that means by giving
you the best proposal, out of say 2-3
firms you go to. You should NEVER
pay for an initial consultation, and
NEVER agree to pay any fees before
you have received a full written proposal
detailing the exact products being recommended,
their benefits, any tie-in, and
full list of all as previously mentioned
charges.
Imagine if you went to a shopping mall
here in Spain, and they charged you before
you could even enter the shop and
see the products and prices on offer!!
So, before you sign anything or agree
to pay any fees, ask for the total annual
% of your proposal to be confirmed in
writing (by email is fine – but again, are
those regulatory details in their email
KIDNAP AND MARRY
A PAKISTANI man has
been arrested in Catalunya
for kidnapping a Slovakian
woman as part of
a plot to marry her and
obtain EU citizenship.
The 31-year-old man held
her in a flat in Tortosa, near
Tarragona, for around three
weeks before she managed
to call police in Slovakia,
who then tipped off their
counterparts in Spain..
The 42-year-old woman
was only able to tell officers
that she was in a flat above
a red bridge over a river,
and that she had found a
piece of paper inside the
by Alex Trelinski
house with a Tortosa address
on it.
She made the call when
her captor left her locked
in the property during a
brief trip out alone. Europol
agents alerted the regional
Mossos d’Esquadra officers
and told them the woman
was alleging the forced wedding
was due to take place
within two days and she
had received death threats
if she called the police.
The Pakistani was bailed
after a court appearance,
pending further inquiries.
footer??). Ensure the 3 charges detailed
in this article are included, along
with confirmation of the total annual
fee of the proposal, ie all charges
added together. There is no excuse for
not willingly providing this information
in a clear and easy to understand
way, and in my experience, when this
doesn’t happen, it may mean they are
trying to hide fees from you.
Ask for fact sheets for the underlying
investment funds – these should
clearly display annual charges, and
preferably a 10+ year track record.
EXPAT KILLED
Mossos officers
I do often feel that as Brits we are too
afraid to offend, and this can really
cost us. Your entire financial future
is potentially at stake when you sign
up with an IFA. You might be sat in
an incredibly impressive office, with
a company that smacks of prestige
and reputation, but some of the most
notorious confidence tricksters in
history have done exactly that. Never
be afraid to ask questions, and never
fail to do your own due diligence, or
seek a second opinion, on any recommendation
being made to you. This
A SPANISH handyman
has been arrested by the
Guardia Civil in Southern
Spain, after the body of
British pensioner that he
worked for, was found
buried in shallow grave
some 30 metres from
her finca.
74-year-old Lesley Pearson
was reported missing
since the middle of last week
after she failed to return a
hire car. Her body was found
close to her home in Alger
in Cadiz province, with the
Guardia arresting the man,
Francisco Javier Becerra,
aged 45, on Sunday. Mrs.
Pearson had moved to Gibraltar,
as her finca was too
big for her after her husband
Frank passed away a
few years ago.
She returned every week
to check on the property
which was put on the market,
with local reports suggesting
that the handyman
had lied about the fact that
it had been sold and that he
started to sell off valuable
items from within it.
That has led to speculation
that Mrs.Pearson confronted
him about the illegal
sales, leading to last
week’s tragedy.
is simply too important for you to take
any chances.
all details are confirmed and you are
happy to move ahead with a proposal.
which time you can cancel in full
The council havesaid that it is important
THIEF KILLER
REPRIEVE
by Alex Trelinski
A NIGHTCLUB worker, who
was handed a two year jail
sentence for killing a thief,
has had his prison sentence
suspended for four
years by a Malaga court.
The man, named as Borja
W.V. Was aged 22 at the time
of incident back in 2015, after
helping a woman whose
purse was stolen by the thief
in February 2015 in the Costa
del Sol resort of Fuengirola.
Borja chased and punched
a man in the head who
had just stolen the woman’s
purse, and the thief
died two days later from a
brain hemorrhage.
The Malaga court in December
2018 sentenced Borja
to two years in jail and ordered
that he pay 180 thousand
euros in compensation
to the victim’s two daughters.
Prison sentences of two
years or under do not usually
result in jail time being
served if the convicted person
has no previous criminal
record.
But by last month, Borja
had only paid six thousand
euros and was facing jail.
Far-right political party
Vox last week launched a
crowd-funding campaign
to help him pay and avoid
jail, shining a spotlight on
the case.
On Monday, the Malaga
court said that apart from
suspending the jail sentence,
it had ordered Borja to pay
250 euros a month in compensation,
if he “has the means to
do so”.
The judge noted that he
had not committed another
offence since the incident and
was not a “criminal risk”.

ONDARA’S famous old
this time of year, and
the mayor has launched a
Jose Ramiro, along with the
Councillor Maite Perez has
TERRACE STUB OUT
CATALUNYA could ban
smoking on the outdoor
terraces of bars and
restaurants as well as
in bus shelters and on
train platforms, under
plans from the region´s
health authority.
The ban would also extend
to open-air sports facilities
and inside cars.
The proposed changes,
which could come into force
within a year, are certain to
meet fierce resistance from
the hospitality industry, and
it´s unclear whether the regional
government will pursue
the plans.
Ever since smoking was
banned indoors, the number
of venues with outdoor
spaces has grown across the
whole of Spain.
At present, smoking is
permitted only on terraces
by Alex Trelinski
that are entirely or mostly in
the open air. However, Catalan
health officials claim the
current law is frequently
flouted in enclosed outdoor
spaces and are planning a
series of inspections.
There are no plans for the
tentative proposals to be
looked at nationally, though
the Spanish government
is considering raising the
price of tobacco and banning
smoking in cars when children
are passengers.
The number of smokers in
Spain has fallen to around
22 per cent, according to Eurostat,
above the EU average
of 18 per cent, and well
above the UK on 13 per cent,
where tobacco prices are
The initial attack occurred
hiding under a bed. When she
Scene of the assault.
Stabbed after
saving child
A 39 year old man who
intervened after seeing
a youth threatening two
teenagers with a knife
was stabbed three times
by the assailant.
The incident happened
in Alaquas (Valencia) last
week when the passer-by
saw a man holding a knife
to the throat of one of two
fifteen year olds, demanding
his mobile phone. He
confronted the thief who
stabbed him in the arm,
side and on his hand before
fleeing. One of the youths
called the emergency services
and an ambulance
quickly arrived.
The Local Police later
tracked down the assailant
after identifying him from
by Simon Russell
CCTV as someone who was
well known to them.
He was intercepted when
he was trying to get on a
bus, although the agent had
to point his gun at him after
the assailant appeared to
be removing something that
could have been a weapon
from his pocket.
The weapon was removed
from the 24 year old Spanish
man who has been remanded
in custody awaiting
charges. The condition
of the man who intervened
in the assault is not known
at this stage, although
some sources are saying the
weapon was not a knife but
a pair of scissors.
THE National Police have
arrested two men just outside
The pair had been sentenced
to 15 years in jail for
in Portugal.
They kept him in “slave
LAST week one of man’s greatest
its 50th anniversary amidst
people who think the whole thing was an
elaborate hoax. Susana Ros, socialist dep-
pair absconded before their
sentence could begin and a
issued.
The Portuguese authorities
had reason to believe
they were in Alicante and the
men were arrested in a caravan
park on the city outskirts
where they had been living.
They are now expected to be
returned to Portugal to begin
serving their prison terms.
U3A Vall Del Pop: The Entertainers
THE Entertainers is a new
group within U3A Vall del
Pop with a mission to perform
classic pop ballads
and up-tempo hit songs
that you all know, with a
special emphasis on fun,
entertainment and audience
participation.
They presently have a
line-up of seven main singers,
four principal singers
and a three-girl backing
and dance team, affectionately
known as “The Dolly
Birds”.
David Rohl, who has
worked in the music industry
for over fifty years, is
their Musical Director who
records The Entertainers
their backing tracks in his
home studio for them to
sing to, so the overall effect
is rich and powerful.
The group’s objective is
to perform great singalong
numbers and, at the same
time, to do so with lots of
energy ... and a smattering
of humour.
Their repertoire caters
for a generation which grew
up in the 1960s and 70s and
is very much influenced by
the music of that era.
But they also tackle some
of the classic songs from the
later decades – even tracks
released as late as 2018!
If you enjoy singing and
would like to join them,
they are considering adding
a choir to support the frontline
singers at some of the
bigger venues where there
is room to accommodate a
larger group.
New members who have
the itch to sing the main
melodies and move to irresistible
rhythms (no statues
required!)
just write to our Group
Leader – Ditas Rohl – at
ditasrohlspain@gmail.com.
Practice meetings will be
held twice a month, on a
Wednesday morning between
10:00 and 12:00
(venue variable but usually
in the Jalon Valley). There
is a 2 charge per session
to help with the costs of
new equipment and general
maintenance.
Why not come along and
join the fun? The U3A is all
about self-motivated groups
passing on their skills
and knowledge.
For further information
on U3A Vall del Pop check
The U3A is all about enjoyment
and learning, and
this is particularly evident
in the U3A Vall del Pop,
whose members hold their
General Assembly generally,
fiestas and holidays permitting,
on the first Thursday
of each month at the
Centre Polivalent in Murla,
and have a diverse range of
groups for the interest of
the members.
TWENTY swimmers on
This happened in Sagunto
such infractions. However
French woman
raped in
Benidorm club
toilet
A twenty-nine-year-old man
has been jailed for seven
years, with a further ten on
probation for the rape of
a French tourist in a wellknown
discotheque on the
outskirts of Benidorm.
The court in Alicante heard
how the victim, had visited
the venue with a group of
friends, whilst on a holiday in
Calpe last August.
After meeting in the club,
the attacker followed the
French woman into a toilet cubicle
in one of the toilets.
Once inside, he pinned her
against the cubicle wall, blocking
the exit door and began to
kiss and fondle her against
her will.
Unable to call for help because
the attacker had placed
his hand over her mouth, the
victim’s statement told how
the man proceeded to rape
her, even though one of her
friends had entered the bathroom
to look for her.
Once the aggressor left
the scene of the attack, the
woman was able to rejoin her
friends to describe her ordeal.
The attacker was confronted
by the friends of the victim,
where a fight ensued, before
spilling out onto the venue’s
car park, where the attacker
was able to flee to his car before
leaving the scene.
National Police officers
arrived to take statements
from the victim, her friends
and a doorman from the
disco who had witnessed
the confrontation.
During the trial earlier this
month the accused, maintained
his innocence, telling
the court the victim was lying
and no sex took place.
However, using evidence
provided by the victim and
witnesses, plus DNA samples
from the woman, the court
concluded the attack took
place. The convicted man, who
was already held in pre-trial
detention, was also ordered
to pay the victim 15,000 for
physical and psychological
damage caused to the victim.
FRIDAY 26TH JULY 2019 19
Local&WeLoveBenidorm
The first residents are expected to move in by the end of 2020
InTempo gets the go ahead
THE owners of Benidorm’s tallest
building have received their builders
licence, allowing them to begin
work on a major overhaul and update
on the development.
InTempo, the incomplete, iconic residential
complex, with its two distinctive
towers topped by a diamond, which
has graced the resorts Poniente skyline
for a number of years, has been beset
by financial and structural problems,
since its conception.
However, new owners, Uniq Residential,
who bought the 47 floor development
last year at a knockdown price,
have vowed to complete the luxury
complex, within 12 to 14 months and
have already begun sales of the apartments
and duplexes.
One of the most significant features
of the updated project will see a reallocation
of the 46th floor and roof, to
spaces for communal use.
These will include a spa, massage areas,
sauna, gym-fitness room, hot tubs
and roof garden.
Plans for the rear of the development
will see the construction of a beachstyle
pool and a children’s pool of 800
m2 and 90 m2, respectively, occupying
a total area of
4,300 m2.
The West Tower will house a large
children’s zone, whilst the East Tower,
will include an exclusive restaurant
with a large outdoor terrace and ornaby
Andy Mansell
mental pool. A huge, seven-metre high
entrance atrium, will be created with
access to six intelligent elevators, located
in the two towers, plus an independent
one directly to the restaurant.
The process of modernisation includes
changes from the first to the
37th floor distributions which have
been modified to enhance open spaces
with more light.
The upper floors, from 38 to 45,
which form part of the “diamond” will
also be completed with exterior terrace
areas, creating maximum privacy for
the owners.
The developers expect completion by
Autumn 2020, allowing the first residents
to move into their homes by the
end of the year.
Music and magic
THERE are two contrasting
cultural events in Calpe
this weekend, one aimed
the Daniel Blanco Magic
This is organised by the
and is to be held
funds for the Spanish Association
for the Prevention of
Bullying. This features piano
and opera with pianist Alba
Sansano, soprano Agatha
Martinez and ,mezzo-soprano
Margarita Orts. This is performed
at the Salo Blau starting
at 9pm and tickets cost
These can be purchased in
National day row leads to killing
THE sorry list of deaths from
gender violence has struck
close to home after a 57 year
old woman was stabbed to
death by her partner in Calpe
this Monday.
The pair were earlier seen arguing
loudly at National Belgian
Day celebrations in the town, and
at around 1.30pm on Monday the
woman’s daughter discovered her
mother’s body at their property
in the Vallesa urbanisation.
The 61 year old perpetrator,
not the father of the young
woman, was also wounded after
an apparent attempted suicide
by Simon Russell
and was taken to hospital under
police guard. The pair were both
Belgian nationals and had been
registered residents of Calpe for
a few months although they are
thought to have arrived in Spain
around two years ago.
Locals say they had a stormy
relationship although there have
never been any official complaints
made to the authorities
by either party.
This latest death is the 1,009th
since Spain started recording
gender violence killings in 2003.
It is also the fourth in Calpe over
the last decade and the fourth in
the Alicante province since the
start of 2019. A silent vigil was
held in Calpe and also at the Valencian
Parliament.
Far right group Vox controversially
refused to take part saying
that they wanted the term gender
violence changed to something
along the lines of “intrafamily”
to recognise that not just
females are victims.
However the statistics shows
that in an overwhelming majority
of cases women are suffering
at the hands of men.
Tot gives up presents
for local charity
FOUR year old Calpe
resident Triana Matilla
Ruiz has shown she is
as generous as she is
brave by asking friends
and family to donate
money to a local cancer
charity rather than buy
her presents.
Little Triana overcame
a serious bone marrow
disease and wanted to give
something back, and this
week presented cheques
by Simon Russell
totalling 150 to the president
of the Calpe branch of
the AECC, the Spanish Association
Against Cancer.
Maria Ferrer gratefully
accepted the donation saying
“the awareness of this
girl and her family after
going through a serious
illness and now wanting
to help other children is a
credit to them all”.
EXPATS LEGAL THREAT
by Alex Trelinski
MILLIONS of British citizens
living in Spain and
across Europe will be
entitled to sue the government
for the loss of
their rights in a no-deal
Brexit, a senior Tory MP
has warned the new Prime
Minister, Boris Johnson.
Alberto Costa, who resigned
from the government
earlier this year over the
issue, wrote a letter to Mr
Johnson saying that unless
her resolved the problem,
his government would face
unprecedented litigation.
He called for Johnson to
quickly enshrine the rights
of EU citizens living in the
UK into British primary legislation
before October 31st,
warning that failure to do so
would mean British citizens
would be unfairly penalised.
Mr Costa wrote: “No peacetime
British government has
ever abrogated the rights enjoyed
by over a million of its
own citizens overnight.”
“As a former UK government
lawyer I can reasonably
foresee an enormous
unprecedented amount of
litigation raised by British
citizens..”
Last week Mr Costa led
an “emergency task force”
to Brussels to meet with Michel
Barnier, the EU’s chief
Brexit negotiator, to discuss
citizens’ rights.
The cross-party group of
MPs were warned that the
best way to guarantee the
rights of five million citizens
most affected by Brexit would
be through Theresa May’s
withdrawal agreement.
Mr Barnier also refused to
“ring-fence” the guarantees
laid out in the withdrawal
agreement despite the looming
threat of no deal.
He said member states
will be responsible for deciding
what rights UK citizens
living in their territory will
be allowed to keep after a
no-deal Brexit, but agreed to
meet again with the group in
mid-October.
Alberto Costa
Most EU countries, including
Spain, passed legislation
guaranteeing the rights
of UK citizens, but that is
dependent on the UK government
offering the same
deal to EU nationals living
in Britain.
New business booming
A report just published
by the Institut Valencia
d’Estadistica (Valencian
Statistics Institute) shows
that the number of registered
businesses in the
Marina Alta continues
to climb.
As of the end of June the
by Simon Russell
figure was 7,035, a number
that has grown steadily since
2012 and the first time that
the 7,000 mark has been
passed since before the recession.
These companies
employ 37,594 people, over a
thousand more than the end
of June 2018 and 10,000 more
than 2012.
The vast majority of the
firms have less than 10 registered
staff, while 670 have between
10 and 49 and only 63
companies in the Marina Alta
employ 50 people or more.
Spanish Inheritance
Tax!
If you are a Spanish Tax resident or
deemed a Spanish Tax Resident, or are
non-resident but own property or assets in
Spain, your spouse/beneficiary could be
liable to Spanish Inheritance Tax upon your
death.
This tax is known in Spain as Impuesto
De Sucesiones or ISD for short. Each region
of Spain has different rates and allowances.
However, the Valencian region currently
has some of the highest rates of Inheritance
Tax in Spain.
Depending on the size of your wealth,
ISD tax may apply to married couples on
the death of the first spouse and the tax has
to be paid within 6 months of the date of
death. All joint assets in Spain are frozen on
death, this includes Spanish bank accounts.
If you are tax resident in Spain, all your
worldwide assets wherever they may be
located, are included in the calculation.
If you are deemed a UK Domicile
(different from UK Resident) but live in
Spain, this can also mean UK Inheritance
Tax is payable by your estate (spouse to
spouse is exempt in the UK).
Spanish Inheritance Tax (ISD) and UK
inheritance tax (IHT) are very complex
subjects, unravel the mysteries and find out
how it could affect you, your family, and/or
heirs and what, if possible, can be done to
THIS SUMMER
Gulliver’s
Park, Valencia
by Simon Russell
THE Costa Blanca and
Valencian Community are
one of the best places
there is to enjoy the long
summer months, and this
article is a quick guide to
some of the more seasonal
things to do and places
to see.
Parque
Gulliver
Most people know about the
City of Arts and Sciences
but not so many about the
Parque Gulliver which is
about 20 minutes walk away
from it.
This is supposed to be the
most visited children’s park
in Spain and consists of an
enormous statue of Gulliver,
the fictional traveller. This
is split into dozens of slides,
rope ladders and other activities
for kids of all ages
surrounded by a lovely picnic
area.
Best of all it is completely
If you fancy a day away
from the regions southern
resorts, Valencia City has a
lot to offer for all the family.
It is the third biggest city in
Spain and easily the largest
in the region with multiple
chances for shopping, eating
and sightseeing.
free and open to all.
This is located at the
eastern end of the Turia
Gardens, itself the largest
green urban area in Spain
at ten kilometres long and
a great place for cycling, jogging,
skating or just chilling
out with a picnic or at one of
the kiosk style cafés dotted
around.
Valencia also has the
Bioparc wildlife park and
a large natural swimming
pool at the marina as well as
some of the best beaches in
the region.

Other things to do
Other things to look out for
in the region are the water
bound inflatables that are off
the coast of many beach towns
throughout the summer.
For a cost of around €10
(locations vary) kids and
parents make their way out
to these giant bouncy castles
which have all sorts of water
based fun while giving the
impression of being out at
sea.
Many resorts also have
attractions such as boat
rides, jet skis, mini cruises,
para gliding and other water
sports.
Inland where things are
a bit quieter there are wine
tours, mountain biking, hiking,
camping spots, fishing
and lake holidays.
The list of things to do is
too long to list here and we
would advise to check with
your local or regional tourist
office for more information.
BUYING OR SELLING
YOUR PROPERTY?
THE Spanish property market certainly
suffered in the 2008 financial crisis – but
that is now a thing of the past.
Things are looking up for investing in
Spain here for a number of reasons, and
despite issues such as Brexit, UK investors
can still benefit enormously from buying
property.
Prices in key areas like the Costa Blanca
are continuing to rise, though those rates according
to recent surveys are slightly slowing
down, but the second hand market continues
to be good.
There there are many reasons that you
might want to invest in property, whether
you are considering retiring to Spain in a few
years, or you want a holiday home in the sun.
But one scenario that is becoming increasingly
popular (especially with foreign investors)
is buying for the holiday market.
Properties can now be listed on sites such
as Airbnb and achieve a substantial return
on investment, but you do have to be officially
registered to let out, and to pay the
appropriate tax.
Spain’s holiday market is still continuing
to grow as tourism hit record numbers last
by Alex Trelinski
year, and that record will be broken this year,
with British visitors leading the international
tourists.
If you have the capital to invest in a deposit
for a property, there may be no better way
to use your money effectively than to buy in
Spain – there are many reasons for this.
One of the most important is the fact that
interest rates are currently running at historically
low levels.
This means it has never been cheaper to
borrow money and your mortgage is effective
cheaper than ever before, coupled with
a new mortgage act that should reduce your
initial spend.
If you are considering investing in property
abroad for the first time, Spain is a
great choice.
There are a range of websites dedicated
to providing information for those looking to
buy, whether that’s for a holiday home or relocating
their family.
And we haven’t even mentioned the quality
lifestyle and weather!
No quiet life
AN estimated 12 million
people across Spain suffer
an unacceptable level
of external noise while in
their homes, with the Valencian
Community being
among the worst place.
Unsurprisingly the problem
is worse in urban areas
with road and rail traffic being
the biggest problem followed
by building works.
Over 20% of people surveyed
in the region said that
noise is a problem, against a
by Simon Russell
national average of 15%.
In Valencia City the mayor
has recently created the new
role for a councillor to look
into the issue of acoustic pollution,
although every town
and city in the area would
seem to have a problem to
some extent. Many properties
are badly soundproofed and
this time of year doors and
windows are often left open,
making the problem worse.
Mortgages approvals
SPANISH banks have said
that they expect mortgage
criteria to toughen up in
the third quarter of this
year, although they predict
no rate change.
The Bank Loan Survey
said that this was a consequence
of lower risk tolerance
and increased regulatory
pressure. They believe
this will apply both to loans
to individual home buyers
and companies buying multiple
or commercial properties.
Banks surveyed also expect
an increase in the levels of capital
and risk-weighted assets.
Erectile dysfunction
Erection problems
(impotence) are very common,
particularly in men over 40.
It’s usually nothing to worry
about, but you should see a GP
if it keeps happening.
Causes of erection problems
Most men occasionally fail
to get or keep an erection.
This is usually due to stress,
tiredness, anxiety or drinking
too much alcohol, and it’s
nothing to worry about.
If it happens more often,
it may be caused by physical
or emotional problems. See
a GP or go to a sexual health
clinic if erection problems
keep happening, It could be a
sign of an underlying health
condition.
Treatment for erection
problems depends on the
cause
Treatments for erectile
dysfunction are much better
than they used to be, and the
problem often goes away.
Physical causes
It’s more likely to be an
emotional problem if you only
have erection problems some
of the time – for example,
you still get erections in the
mornings but not during
sexual activity.
Anxiety and depression can
be treated with counselling
and cognitive behavioural
therapy (CBT).
Your GP might recommend
sex therapy, either on its own
or in combination with other
psychotherapy.
POST-MENOPAUSAL bleeding is
vaginal bleeding that occurs at
least 12 months after your periods
have stopped.
Although post-menopausal bleeding
is a common problem, it’s not normal.
There is a golden rule in medicine –
‘post menopausal bleeding should be
seen as cancer until proved otherwise’.
Most likely causes:
• inflammation and thinning of the
vaginal lining (atrophic vaginitis) or
womb lining (endometrial atrophy) –
caused by lower oestrogen levels.
• cervical or womb polyps – growths,
which are usually non-cancerous,
that can form in the cervix (neck of
the womb) or the womb itself.
• a thickened womb lining (endometrial
hyperplasia) – which can be caused by
hormone replacement therapy (HRT),
high levels of oestrogen or by being
overweight; if left untreated this can
lead to development of womb cancer
(also known as endometrial cancer).
About 1 in every 10 women with postmenopausal
bleeding will have uterine
cancer, and in a few cases bleeding may
be a sign of another type of cancer such
as vulval, vaginal or cervical cancer.
Diagnosing the cause
Your GP will take a detailed history
from you. You will then be refered to a
gynaecologist. The following tests may
be carried out:
pelvic examination – a speculum
will be inserted into your vagina, (similar
to having a cervical smear test) so
your vulva, vagina and cervix can be
carefully examined. Most women find
this a bit uncomfortable but not painful.
Swabs may be taken from your
vagina and/or cervix to rule out any infection.
The doctor may wish to carry
out a cervical smear test as well if this
is overdue.
vaginal ultrasound scan – performed
by gently inserting a fine ultrasound
probe into your vagina, which
you may find slightly uncomfortable. It
usually takes about 10 minutes.
The probe emits high-frequency
sound waves to create an image of the
FRIDAY 26TH JULY 2019 33
Health&Lifestyle
Post Menopausal Bleeding
inside of your vagina and womb, which
is then displayed on a monitor.
The results of this examination
will then be discussed with you, and
you’ll find out whether you need a biopsy
or hysteroscopy. This is mainly
determined by the thickness of the
womb lining.
tests on a sample of the lining of
the uterus (endometrial biopsy) – if
the lining of the uterus is thickened, a
small sample of tissue (biopsy) may be
removed using a fine, flexible plastic
tube. This can cause cramps and bleeding,
which usually settles very quickly.
The test can be stopped if you are finding
it too uncomfortable, so let the doctor
carrying out the test know if you
want them to stop.
The speculum is then removed and
an internal examination is performed.
This allows the doctor to gauge the size,
shape and consistency of your womb,
and also assess if there is any tenderness
in your pelvis.
a hysteroscopy – this is a camera
test using a fine telescope like instrument
called a hysteroscope. This allows
the doctor to look inside your uterus
and remove a small sample of tissue
for testing.
The hysteroscope is passed through
your cervix under either local anaesthetic
or general anaesthetic.
Treating post-menopausal bleeding
Treatment will depend on the cause:
Endometrial atrophy can be treated
with oestrogen cream or pessaries, although
treatment may not be necessary
if symptoms are minimal.
If the cause is cervical polyps, they
may need to be removed. This fairly
simple procedure can be done as an
out patient.
There are various types of endometrial
hyperplasia which may be treated
with hormone medication (tablets or
an intrauterine system implant) or
surgery to remove the uterus, cervix
and ovaries (a total hysterectomy). Occasionally,
if the changes are mild, no
treatment may be necessary.
If bleeding is thought to be a side
effect of HRT, altering or stopping the
treatment may be recommended.
If the cause is uterine cancer, a total
hysterectomy will often be recommended
with appropriate follow up
cancer treatment.
If you are in the menopause and experience
ANY vaginal bleeding, however
slight, it should not be ignored. A
family doctor should be seen without
delay and although chances are that it
is not a serious problem, any sinister
cause MUST be ruled out.
Eye Health Advice
for Grandparents
GRANDPARENTS are taking a more
and more active role in caring for
their grandchildren and offer so
much love, support and help for their
families, which is why they are recognised
on National Grandparents Day
on July 26th.
To celebrate all their hard work and
give back to them, Specsavers Ópticas
are offering the following eye health advice
for grandparents and will be offering
advice and a 30% discount in store
on glasses from 89€ range and above on
this special day. There will also be an
open day in store in Javea and Calpe
with cava, nibbles, eye health advice,
giveaways and discounts from 9.30-5.30.
How to protect older eyes
Good vision is essential for living a
full life and keeping up with the grandchildren.
Specsavers Ópticas advises everyone
over the age of 80 to have an eye
test at least once a year as older eyes are
susceptible to certain changes which can
be detected during an eye test.
Some of the most common issues to affect
the eyes after the age of 65 include
cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.
So be aware of any changes
in your vision and visit your optician as
soon as you notice any changes.
Glaucoma is caused by a build-up of
fluid within the eye, which increases
pressure and damages the optic nerve,
which connects the eye to the brain. If
not caught and treated early, this causes
permanent vision loss, yet as vision damage
occurs gradually it can be hard to
spot without an eye test.
Make sure you are getting your eyes
tested regularly. Check that it includes
an eye pressure test (tonometry) which
can identify glaucoma in the early stages
and that your optician uses the latest
technology to ensure that the eyes
are healthy.
Looking after your
Grandchildren’s Eyes
If you are looking after your grandchildren
on a regular basis, you need to think
about how to keep their eyes healthy and
protect against injuries. Here are a few
important tips to follow:
Protect their eyes when playing sports
– Sport-related injuries are the biggest
single cause of accidental eye injury in
children. High-risk sports and activities
are the main culprits such as anything
using small fast projectiles, contact
sports and cycling.
We recommend that children or adults
who are taking part in any activities,
considered high risk, should wear protective
eye wear.
Choose toys carefully – Many toys can
cause eye injuries including scratches to
the cornea, ulcers, traumatic cataracts,
bleeding and retinal detachment. Specsavers
Ópticas advise against buying
toys which shoot dangerous projectiles
such as bullets, darts or balls, toy wands,
swords and laser pointers.
Limit Screen Time – Across the nine
Specsavers Ópticas stores in Spain we
have noticed an increase in eye problems,
particularly short-sightedness, in
children and believe it could be related
to the excessive use of digital devices.
We advise you to limit screen time, make
sure that kids get plenty of time outside
and that they have regular eye tests from
the age of six to maintain good vision.
Comprehensive eye tests including
health checks are free at Specsavers Ópticas.
you or your grandchildren, pop into your
Day or see the eye health section of the
Keeping their cool
Adoption Corner
JENNA – Lovely Podenco who was
found at Christmas and presented
spayed, is about 4 years old and
needs her own home. All her pups
have been homed.
HARPER – Is possibly a German
Shepherd cross. She has been
spayed and chipped, is about 8
years old and needs her own home.
No adoption fee but a donation is
much appreciated.
THE heat is on and it’s
not just people who need
to keep their cool. Unlike
us, our four-legged canine
friends can’t sweat
through their skin.
So they need all the help
we can give them as temperatures
soar. Here’s some advice
from Blue Cross for Pets
on how to keep your dog cool:
Make sure your dog has
access to clean water at all
times, ideally a large bowl
filled to the top. Carry water
and a bowl with you
on walks.
On hot days walk your pet
during the cooler parts of
the day – early morning and
late evening.
Watch for signs of overheating
like heavy panting
and loss of energy. If you recognise
those signs when on
a walk, stop, find shade and
give your dog water.
Never leave your dog or
any pet alone in a car, even
with the windows open.
Make cooling treats for your
dog. Ice cubes with their favourite
food inside.
Be particularly careful
with short-nosed dogs such
as bull breeds, boxers and
pugs as well as older pets and
those that are overweight.
Dogs’ paw pads can burn
on hot pavements. If it’s too
hot for your hand it’s too hot
for their paws.
Swimming is great exercise
for dogs. But remember
not all dogs like to swim.
If yours doesn’t don’t force
them and never throw a dog
in the water.
Be wary of tides at the
beach and currents in rivers
and make sure the water is
clean.
Also, many other dogs, cats and
kittens needing homes.
Food and donations also urgently
needed and can be left at ARC’s
charity shop on Carrer Valencia 1,
COSTA RICA
- the land of gold
COSTA Rica, in South
America, named by Columbus
who believed that
there was gold to be found
there. This country features
on many a wish list
and for obvious reasons.
It has a year round fabulous
climate, has been
awarded some of the highest
tourism awards to be
achieved on TripAdvisor,
and is the most peaceful
of countries, boasting to
not have an army!
The Number two hotel in
the World was Costa Rica’s
Nayara Hotel, Spa and Gardens
in La Fortuna by the
Arenal Volcano. The Arenal
Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s
most notable features. It resides
within a national park
and although it fortunately
entered into a resting phase
in 2010 with no more eruptions,
it is still a stunning
sight, framing the skyline
with perfect symmetry.
The whole area has a host
there are also
possibilities for canoeing,
fishing, horse riding, and
visiting the stunning 70m
For the budding Botanist,
there is no better destination!
There are actually botanical
gardens close by with
over 2,500 species of plants.
Also near Arenal are the Venado
Caves, another world.
1.5 miles of stalagmites,
Another beautiful place in
Costa Rica, but a complete
contrast to the lowlands of
Arenal is the sun drenched
Caribbean coast of Tortugero.
There are no roads leading
to here, so quite unusually
varied, with long
wide beaches, canals
perfect for
spotting crocodiles
(if you want
to) and one of the
most important
breeding grounds
of the green
sea turtle.
Just an hour
from the busy
town of San José
are the La Paz
Waterfall Gardens
in the Central
Highlands
area of Costa
Rica. This is another
area rich in
bio diversity due
to the altitude of
between 4,000
and 5,000 feet so
both cloud forest
and rain forest
exist.
This is a truly
magical day out
you that will always
remember.
There is a the
largest butterfly
Green turtle
observatory in
the world, a serpentarium,
a frog pond, five waterfalls,
and my personal favourite,
hummingbird gardens. I
still remember many years
ago standing watching a
hummingbird on a bridge in
the South of France for as
long as I could, so to watch
24 species of hummingbirds
feed, and observe them;
just amazing.
Do you have a Bucket
List? Do you have that wish
list of places you want to still
go to? If Costa Rica is not on
it, I imagine it is because you
were not really aware that
such a beautiful, peaceful,
and inexpensive place existed.
This country has such
a variety of different options
to explore that if you are able
to…go.. while you can… I
doubt you will regret it!
Motoring
Stay cool
in the car
during
the hot
weather
AS forecasters predict a
spell of sweltering weather,
breakdown and road
safety organisation GEM
Motoring Assist is advising
drivers to ensure they are
able to keep their cool.
GEM road safety officer
Neil Worth comments: “Driving
in hot weather can be
challenging, but we can reduce
stress and discomfort
by following some simple tips
to ensure that we, our passengers
and our vehicles are
ready for the heat.”
Temperatures across
southern England and Wales
are predicted to approach 30
degrees by the middle of the
week, so GEM road safety
officer Neil Worth has assembled
a selection of practical
and sensible information
that will help keep drivers
and their passengers safe
on journeys.
Top tips for troublefree
journeys:
Plan your journey. Check
the route in advance and
don’t forget to build in breaks
if you’re making a long journey.
If you’re heading to the
coast, expect many other motorists
to have the same idea,
so be prepared for queues.
Plan where you will park at
the end of the journey.
Think about setting off
earlier or later, so that you
avoid travelling during the
hottest and most uncomfortable
times of day.
Wear clothes that will
keep you as cool as possible,
but don’t drive in bare feet,
flip-flops or loose sandals.
Keep a large bottle of water
in the car. Drink plenty
during rest stops, to help you
keep hydrated.
Never leave a child or dog
alone in a car on a warm day.
If you see a child or dog in
distress in a hot car, dial 999.
Carry out some basic
maintenance checks on your
car before setting out. Check
engine coolant and oil levels,
tyre pressure and tread
depth and windscreen washer
fluid levels.
Practise kindness and etiquette
to other drivers whose
manners may be not be as
good as yours. Don’t get involved
in altercations, as this
will go a long way toward
keeping you – and others –
safer in hot weather.
HOT UNDER
THE COLLAR
HAS having a sense of humour disappeared
from Britain, after a row over an advert that was
ruled inappropriate and banned from Nottingham’s
buses, which has now suddenly appeared on
a billboard.
The Advertising Standards Agency has apparently got
two complaints about the air conditioning advert – described
by an academic as “plain sexist” – featuring the
line: “Your wife is hot!”
It was meant to appear on seven buses in Nottingham
but Adverta, which places adverts on buses and trams
in the city, blocked it and said it could cause offence. Lee
Davies, who designed the ad, said it was “a little
bit of harmless fun”.
Prof Carrie Paechter, director of the Nottingham Centre
for Children, Young People and Families, said the advert
was “like something out of the 1950s” and called for it to
be removed.’
Fun or sexism? What if a bare-chested young bloke with
the line “Your husband is hot!” had appeared instead?
Would there have been the same uproar? Great free publicity
though for the AV company!
FACEBOOK FUGITIVE
IN this modern age of technology, a string of online posts in- book appeal post for help
I find it hard to believe that cops
are being given the runaround by a
convicted criminal, Andy Fox, who
is on the run after being found
guilty of assault this month, as he
casually just goes onto Facebook
to take the rip out of the police.
Fox went on the run(had to get that
line in!) on July 6th, and has so far
evaded the clutches of the Northamptonshire
Police, goading the force with
cluding comments on appeals
for his own capture.
Fox has teased the
constabulary with a series
of photos and meme
posts, and In one, captioned
“Hello Mr Officer”, he could
be seen making an offensive gesture
in front of a police car.
He also posted a number of memes
in the comments section of a Face-
in catching him.
The posts, which included
a picture with the
words “peek-a-boo”, have
since been removed.
Since then, he has even
commented on a story
about him on a local newspaper’s
Facebook page.
Let’s hope that he’s not heading
over to Spain to live under the radar.
GETTING
IN EARLY
AS Britain offered some sizzling
summer temperatures this
week, a Bristol area pub decided
to look forward towards the end
of the year by putting up a five
foot Christmas tree!
The Air Balloon’s bar manager
Joanne Johnson said the artificial
tree, with its blue, gold and silver
baubles and flashing bright lights,
has been welcomed by customers.
Pub goers were met with a sign
that read: ‘Have yourself a merry
little Christmas.’
It’s the third year in a row the
pub in Filton, South Gloucestershire
has put up its tree early.
Joanne said it boosts early
Christmas bookings and is ‘a talking
point’.
She added: ‘This is the third year
in a row we’ve had the tree up and
we never get any negative comments
about it. Regulars have been
excited asking us when the tree is
going up because last year we had it
up a little earlier.’
I’m no Grinch, but I can’t wait for
the early influx of Christmas items
to hit the UK stores within the next
few weeks, perhaps as folk stock up
due to any post-Brexit shortages!

THERE’S no doubt who had the picture of
the week, as Prince George’s sixth birthday
was celebrated on Monday, with a series
of photos taken by his mum, Kate.
Three pics were published of the third in line
garden of his home at Kensington Palace.
Clearly he’s got the footie bug from his dad
William, with the England football team also
sending their well-wishes to the young royal,
complimenting the prince on his Three Lions
Earlier this month, the young prince re-
The sports star said George was “cute” and
had a “good” technique.
a refreshing change from the stilted and formal
Mansell’s
Strictly Deflated
One would imagine that fans of the
BBC’s hit Autumn Saturday night
blockbuster, Strictly Come Dancing may
be slightly under whelmed as news
broke of outgoing Darcey Bussell’s
replacement on the show’s judging
panel…… It’s none other than, Motsi
Mabuse, elder sister of Oti, who dances
on the show.
Although she is relatively unknown in
the UK, The 38-year-old has past form
as both a dancer and a judge, having
won the South African and German the panel. She said: “I have so much
Latin championships in 2009 and 2010 respect and admiration for the other
consecutively, and having served on the three judges and hope to add my own
judging panel of Let’s Dance in Germany bit of sparkle to the show. I can’t wait to
since 2011.
get started!”
Mabuse said she was “overjoyed” to be
joining the judges Bruno Tonioli, Craig
Revel Horwood and Shirley Ballas on
Stars In My
Motsi for
Strictly
Stand by for accusations of nepotism
and bias towards her sister, when she
debuts on the show later in the year.
Hard to believe it’s eight years since the
music lost the amazingly talented Amy
Winehouse, who died tragically young,
from alcohol poisoning at the age of 27.
Touching tributes have been paid, by
family and friends of the singer, on the
anniversary of her death earlier this
week.
Amy’s mother Janis H Winehouse simply
tweeted a moving image of a flaming
candle and a pair of her daughter’s high
heel shoes.
Meanwhile her Goddaughter, Dionne
Bromfield, shared a sweet throwback
snap of the smiling pair on Instagram as
she remembered the star, who died at the
age of 27 in 2011 from alcohol poisoning.
‘Miss you always but today more than
ever’, she captioned the image.
Perhaps the most touching came
from the team behind TFL’s All On
The Board, who posted a tribute on a
London Underground white board using
song titles from the singer’s amazing
collection of tracks and shared it on
Twitter.
Eyes
Touching Amy tributes
Amy died
in 2011
‘Every cupid knows that tears dry on
their own. After some unholy ways of
words, we may wake up alone’, the
poem read. ‘During half time between
the cheats we may think love is a losing
game; Take the box of hidden treasures
away, it takes more than pumps and
forbidden pleasures to impress a lioness
today.’
Very sweet and classy for a sassy
superstar!
TWO ISLANDS FOR 2020
After revealing last week, that I must be
the only person to be bored stiff with
the Love Island shenanigans this year,
I was dealt a horrific double blow this
week, when ITV revealed there will be,
not one, but two series of the ludicrous
programme next year.
Love Island is the most watched
programme of the year for adults
aged 16-34, across any channel, which
probably explains why I don’t get it.
This year’s interminable series still
has another week, to run, but with
advertising revenue in mind, Paul
Mortimer, Head of Digital Channels
Fans of nineties and noughties super girl
group, Sugababes, (who let’s face it have
had more line ups than a police identity
parade), were in a tizz earlier this week
over an Instagram photo.
Siobhán Donaghy popped a picture on
Instagram stories of her and two friends.
“My girls,” read the caption. Perhaps it
should have said “babes”, considering
the picture included Keisha Buchanan
and Mutya Buena, AKA the other two
members of the original (and best?)
incarnation of pop’s most turbulent girl
band.
It’s yet to be confirmed whether the
reunion will actually happen, as the
last time the three girls recorded any
material, they were known as MKS,
because of an EU trademark issue over
the Sugababes title.
and Acquisitions at ITV said in a
statement of the news: ‘Off the back of
a record-breaking year, we’re delighted
to be bringing an extra series of our
biggest and sunniest show to the 2020
schedule.
Just after Christmas, a new batch of
buffed and beautiful hopefuls will
decamp to sunny climes, not Mallorca,
which hosts the Summer series, (where
temperatures in Winter would have
the contestants reaching for their
thermals), but to sunny South Africa.
Meanwhile I will be hiding under the
covers until it finishes.
Sugababes reunion?
Sugababes
to reform?
Apparently that has now been sorted, so
it could be all systems go for the return of
the Sugababes ….. but there’s still time
for the revolving door to turn again.
Love
Island X2
Who’s under the mask?
With falling ratings hitting both X Factor
and The Voice, ITV bosses are pinning
their hopes on a new music show
entitled The Masked Singer.
Sound intriguing to you? Nor me …….
But read on and you decide what you
think, when you know how the show
works.
The Masked Singer is a format based
on the Korean version of the show,
titled The King of Mask Singer.
It sees celebrities anonymously
dressing up in wacky and wonderful
costumes in front of a live studio
audience, a star-studded panel and the
nation.
The true identity of the singer is only
revealed when they are eliminated each
week from the competition.
That wacky
mask show
After the show was bought by FOX in
the US and featured Nicole Scherzinger,
Robin Thicke, Ken Jeong and Jenny
McCarthy on the panel, ITV decided to
buy the show as it was a massive hit
across the pond.
There’s no actual date for the show’s
debut yet, nor details of the host and
judging panel, so watch this space ……
I can hardly contain my excitement.

ENGLAND’S last-gasp win provided
an unbelievable climax to the 2019
is set to make a similar global impact,
with the inaugural European
Cricket League (ECL) predicted to
attract a major worldwide audience
when it takes place in Spain
this month.
Billed as cricket’s equivalent of the
UEFA Champions League, ECL19 will
be held for the first time at La Manga
Club from July 29-31, with the domestic
champions of Denmark, France,
Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania,
Russia and Spain competing for
the chance to be crowned as continental
Europe club cricket’s ‘Kings of Europe’.
Played over 17 matches in a T10 format,
interest in the competition is set
to be huge, with all the games being
televised live in Europe, Asia, North
America and Australasia across a
combination of broadcast, digital and
social channels, including the newlylaunched
European Cricket Network.
Broadcast coverage will be shown
in countries including the UK, Australia,
India, Middle East, the United
Arab Emirates, France, Germany,
Turkey, Spain, USA, Canada and
the Caribbean.
“Spain’s weather is perfect for year
round cricket, and La Manga Club’s
facilities and proximity to the beach
makes it an awesome destination for
cricket fans and holiday makers,” said
Daniel Weston, founder of the ECL.
“Featuring southern Europe’s best
cricket facilities, the resort is the perfect
destination for cricket fans and
champion clubs to combine worldclass
cricket and entertainment in
equal measure.
“There has never been a Europeanwide
league of this nature and it’s our
desire to make the ECL the flagship
competition in continental Europe.
“They called us and said
Andy really wanted to come
to play doubles with his
brother,” said Mark Ein, Citi
LOWRY LOOKS AHEAD
OPEN champion Shane Lowry says
his main goal is securing a place
on next year’s Ryder Cup team.
The 32-year-old became the fifth
Irishman to lift the Claret Jug after
triumphing at Royal Portrush
on Sunday.
The win gives the Clara native 10
and five-year exemptions to the European
and PGA Tours respectively.
However, Lowry insists his plan
for the next 12 months is to seal his
spot for the biennial event, which
will be held in Wisconsin in 2020.
“Obviously, in the short term I’m
going to enjoy this, there’s no doubt
about that,” Lowry said after securing
a six-shot victory over Tommy
Fleetwood.
“But in the long term you obviously
want to back-up your success.”
“My big goal remains the same
and that is to be on the plane going
to Whistling Straits next year. That’s
my plan for the next 12 months.
Hopefully that involves a couple of
wins along the way.”
European qualifying for the Ryder
Cup does not begin until September
and Lowry is determined to make his
debut under captain Padraig Harrington,
who greeted him on the 18th
green on Sunday evening.
Europe will travel to Whistling
Straits looking to retain the trophy
after their resounding 17.5-10.5 victory
over the United States at Le
Golf National in 2018.
HOME COMFORT
SEBASTIAN Vettel will look
for a local boost this Sunday,
with the German F1
Grand Prix at Hockenheim.
The Ferrari driver crashed
out of the British Grand Prix
last time out after running
into the back of Max Verstappen’s
Red Bull.
Rival Lewis Hamilton
went on to win his home race
– his sixth win there, and by
contrast, Vettel has won the
German GP just once before
back in 2013, when he was
driving for Red Bull.
Last year, Vettel started
the race on pole but crashed
out from the lead.
Hamilton will be looking to
claim a sixth win in his last
seven races and increase his
drivers’ championship lead,
which stands at 39 points.
The world champion is
the most successful current
driver in Germany with four
wins, and no other active
driver has won the race more
than once.
GETTING
THEIR
NUMBER
AFTER all the excitement
of England lifting the World
Cup earlier this month,
cricket´s most fiercest rivalry
resumes on Thursday
(August 1st) in the battle
for the Ashes, with the
first test at Edgbaston.
As the sport moves on,
England will break years of
tradition when they step out
on the field next week, with
names and numbers on the
back of their Test whites, including
captain Joe Root with
a number 66 on his back.
England are looking to
snatch back the tiny symbolic
urn from the Aussies
in the five match series that
always sparks the imagination
of even the most casual
cricket follower.
by Alex Trelinski
The main concerns for the
home side surround their
pace bowlers, with Jimmy
Anderson a slight doubt
with a calf injury, whilst
World Cup stars Mark Wood
and Jofra Archer have side
strains, and are not in contention,
with Wood possibly
out until the fourth test in
early September.
“We couldn’t be better
placed in many ways. There’s
a huge amount of confidence
off the back of the World
Cup. That counts for a lot,”
said Root.
“It is something we have to
capitalise on going into what
is a huge set of Test matches.”
EXITING BALE SCORES
GARETH Bale scored in
his first pre-season appearance
for Real Madrid
on Tuesday, but his future
at the club remains in serious
doubt.
Bale came off the bench at
half-time to net as Real won
on penalties after a 2-2 draw
with Arsenal in the International
Champions Cup.
After the game in Maryland,
coach Zinedine Zidane
said: “He put in a good performance
and I’m pleased
for him.”
But the Frenchman added:
“Nothing has changed,
you know the situation.”
Zidane had previously
said Bale is “very close to
leaving” the club and that
his exit would be “best for
everyone”, claiming it was
the Welshman’s decision
not play in an earlier game
against Bayern Munich.
Bale has been linked with
a number of clubs over the
summer, including a possible
move to the Chinese Super
League with a reported
wage of over a million euros
per week.

LA LIGA STEPS IN
ANTOINE Griezmann’s
of action to take.”
move to Barcelona could
be blocked in a row over
the fee, according to La
Liga president Javier Tebas
Griezmann has already
played a friendly for his new
club, a 2-1 friendly defeat by
Chelsea in Japan.
in a radio interview
Tebas added: “Atletico
Atletico Madrid complained
which has put in
after Barca announced
doubt whether we should
they had signed the
pass Griezmann’s licence
France forward, having activated
his 120 million euro
release clause on July 12th.
The clause dropped from
200m to 120m euros on July
1st, but Atletico claim the
deal was done before then
and that they are due the
larger amount.
“It is possible to block a
player’s transfer,” Tebas told
Onda Cero. “La Liga will
have to decide what course
to Barcelona.”
“There’s a process that
has been put in motion and
those overseeing it will have
to come to resolve the case.”
Atletico reported Barcelona
to Fifa over an alleged
illegal approach for Griezmann
in December 2017.
RUIZ REMATCH ON
EDDIE Hearn has rubbished
rumours of Anthony
Joshua turning down
a rematch with Andy
Ruiz Jr and says alternatives
are “not even up
for negotiation”.
Joshua, 29, lost three of
the four major world heavyweight
titles to Ruiz in a
huge shock in New York
last month, and rumours
have appeared suggesting
that the Brit would fight
somebody else before facing
Ruiz again.
Hearn, Joshua’s promoter,
said this week: “Do
you think Joshua wants a
warm-up? No.”
Hearn added that Cardiff’s
Principality Stadium
was now the “front-runner”
to host the rematch on December
14th, with a return
to New York’s Madison
Square Garden second in
line for November 29th.
