Brookfield Gala Day
SATURDAY 17th AUGUST FROM 2pm
Brookfield’s annual Gala Day is almost
here once again and fingers are well and
truly crossed that weather conditions will be
favourable! The event will feature a variety of
stalls and activities for all the family including
tombola, Inflatable fun, face painting, CD/
DVD’s, cake & candy, pig racing, prize
raffle, hook-a-duck, coconut shy, beer tent/
bar - and plenty more! Participants for
the children’s fancy dress parade should
assemble at Malcolm’s Yard at the bottom
of Albert Road by 1.45pm. A programme of
entertainment will take place throughout the
afternoon featuring performances from local
groups/organisations, including our very own
Brookfield Brass Necks. Afternoon tea with
delicious home baking will be available in the
Village Hall from 2.30pm.
As usual, our Gala Day is very much ‘for
the village by the village’ and donations for
stalls will be most welcome. A date for your

Houston and Killellan Kirk
Wee Blether
For all those who enjoy a cuppa and a chat the Wee
Blether starts again on Tuesday 6th August. Come
along and join us in the West Halls.
Sunday 18th August sees the return to 11am services
all welcome at Morning Worship.
Early Communion Service starts back on Sunday 1st
September at 9.45am.
Family Games Afternoon
Get along to Birkmyre Park on Saturday 24th August
for a family games afternoon. Bring a picnic and join in
on the fun and enjoy yourselves.
Open Doors
The weekend of 7th/8th September is the traditional
Open Doors Weekend in Renfrewshire. In Houston
& Killellan Kirk we believe that we are an open and
welcoming church – although our church building is
locked for a good part of each week! On the weekend
of 7th/8th September we are going to make a greater
effort, while participating in Open Doors. While Open
Doors is not a first for us, we are adding a few “activities”
to the Open Doors’ tours.
Saturday 7th September: Kirk open 10am to 4pm with
guided tours, Pulpit Falls’ display, taped organ music
by Peter McKerrell, quiz for the children prepared by
the Sunday Club and possibly a mouse hunt! Biscuits,
tea or coffee or juice for children will be available. In the
early evening there will be a treasure hunt and BBQ.
Sunday 8th September: Special Welcome / Invitation
to Church Service from 11am. From 1pm to 4pm, guided
tours, Pulpit Falls’ display, Quiz for the children and
possibly a mouse hunt (if not all found on Saturday)!
From 2pm there will be live music in the Atrium, and
Cream Teas available in the Killellan Halls.
This is not just for the Kirk Members, or even just the
parishioners - “Everybody is Welcome in This Place!”

stall. Contributions of home baking for
the tearoom and cake & candy stall can be
handed in to the Village Hall on the morning of

Bridge Class
A new weekly Bridge class is starting on
WEDNESDAY 4th SEPTEMBER from 1pm -
3pm in the Village Hall. This is suitable for
all levels - beginners, improvers or just as a
refresher. All welcome. No partner required.

Foodbank Current Needs
The appeal to support Renfrewshire Foodbank www.
renfrewshire.foodbank.org.uk with a tin at a time is
being very well responded to, which is not surprising
from the generous congregation at Houston & Killellan
Kirk. Every other Monday a large car load is delivered
to Paisley. Those who operate the centre advise that
the greatest current needs are for tinned potatoes, tins
of meat, tins of fish e.g. Tuna or pilchards, tins of fruit,
custard, rice pudding, diluting juice, cartons of juice (not
chilled), shampoo, bars of soap, toilet paper, shower
gel, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes.
The next big Foodbank Appeal at Houston & Killellan
Kirk will be for Harvest Thanksgiving, which this year is
on Sunday 15th September, and when traditionally the
congregation support the Foodbank with a wide range
of goods.
Foodbanks - as more people are becoming dependent
of foodbanks, there is a great demand for food…
Renfrewshire is no different! We are supporting our
local foodbank, by bringing a tin a week to Church -
please support this if you can.
Harvest Service - 15th August - special collection for
Foodbank.
The Cameo Club
The end of Houston and Killellan Kirk Cameo Club year
finished with the Carers Choir singing to us prior to our
AGM. We were most interested to hear about our new
and full agenda for 2019/2020.
The Club is open to anyone, so why not come along
every second Wednesday afternoon at 2pm in the West
Halls, Main Street, Houston. We would be delighted to
see you.
Come and join us for a natter along with tea, cakes and
entertainment. Our new year starts on 11th September
