What is the most rewarding aspect of your work
as a teacher?
More Getting Than to Just teach kids how to learn and seeing
Horse them Feed! take ownership. I love when they finally experience
success and feel good about themselves.
Began teaching career — 2003
Began teaching in Granby — 2005
Career history — Began teaching in West Palm
Beach, Fla., for two years, then moved back to
Connecticut and joined the Granby schools,
working at Kelly Lane School until it merged with
Wells Road — have been at Wells for three years
and will start next year at the middle school.
Where were you born and raised?
Born in Hartford, raised in Enfield, moved to
Florida after college for two years, and then
moved back to Connecticut.
What motivated you to pursue
a teaching career?
My mom was a teacher so I spent many summers
helping her get her classroom ready. I knew I
liked the idea of teaching and found that I had a
knack for breaking concepts down for kids who
needed a little more help, so I pursued special
education.
What is the biggest impediment to student
success today? How can teachers help students
overcome this obstacle and succeed?
I see students struggle with motivation, a need
for instant gratification, and difficulty persevering
through something hard or long. “But I don’t
want to,” is a common phrase we hear from students,
and the best thing we as teachers can do to
help them is push them through it and get them
to feel the success of accomplishing something
that was hard.
Please share a brief anecdote that gives a
glimpse of your work in education:
There is no one moment, but my teaching partner
Nicole McGrath and I took on a summer project
where we collected mirrors and turned them into
motivational wall art for the year. We’ve turned
our resource room into a hotel for Halloween, we
take celebratory photos with funny filters when a
student meets a goal or accomplishes something
really hard for them and share the photos with
their families. I’m always writing on my table
or desk when my students do math, and I love
to sit right next to my students and coach them
through their work or watch them show someone
else how to do a problem.
Family info — Husband: Rich (married five
years); Children: AJ, 10, and Addelynn, 4; Parents:
Kathy and Don Durner; Sister: Tracey Durner
Age — 37
. . . so I make sure every detail
and box is checked.
