rising senior at GMHS, and Nairobi,<br />
11, is a rising 7th-grader at<br />
<strong>Granby</strong> Memorial Middle School.<br />
The Mounings are active members<br />
of Crossroads Community<br />
Cathedral in East Hartford. Ken<br />
Sr. serves as a deacon and participates<br />
in men’s group activities.<br />
Rose serves on the worship ministry<br />
team and in the café. Malachi<br />
and Kenya are on the video team,<br />
while Kenya also helps with chil-<br />
dren’s church and the café. They all<br />
look forward to the church opening<br />
a second campus this fall at the<br />
former La Renaissance Banquet<br />
facility in East Windsor, about 15<br />
minutes closer to <strong>Granby</strong>.<br />
The younger Mouning generation<br />
has appreciated growing up<br />
in <strong>Granby</strong>.<br />
“I like the close-knit community<br />
of <strong>Granby</strong> and how I have<br />
gotten to know all types of different<br />
people in town,” says Malachi.<br />
“I know most of the people who<br />
live near me, and that is something<br />
that I cherish and want to<br />
continue to have long after I leave<br />
<strong>Granby</strong>.”<br />
Ken Jr. notes that “the community<br />
is a relaxed environment with<br />
nice people … I enjoy the quiet<br />
nature of the town.”<br />
Kenya plays varsity field hockey<br />
and is the manager of the varsity<br />
swimming and diving team.<br />
“I love the family feel of<br />
<strong>Granby</strong>,” she says. “Being such a<br />
small town, you truly get to meet<br />
everyone and form a genuine connection.”<br />
A representative of the new<br />
Kearns Community Center Board,<br />
Kenya participates in the CREC<br />
Leadership Academy and Junior<br />
Achievement Entrepreneurial<br />
Academy.<br />
“I love the relationship students<br />
have with the administration [at<br />
GMHS],” says Kenya, who relishes<br />
studying algebra and technology<br />
design. “The teachers are always<br />
willing to help with anything,<br />
whether it be educational or<br />
simple, encouraging life lessons.”<br />
Meanwhile, Nairobi highlights<br />
a summertime favorite: “What I<br />
enjoy most about living in <strong>Granby</strong><br />
is Grassroots Ice Cream.”<br />
Nairobi plays soccer with the<br />
<strong>Granby</strong> Rovers, travel basketball,<br />
lacrosse, drums in the school<br />
band, and the snare drum in the<br />
Marquis of <strong>Granby</strong> Ancient Fife<br />
and Drum Corps.<br />
