with Hanna EMS and Hanna
Fire Department to a report
that a small airplane crashed at
the Hanna Airport.

Four repeat property
offenders charged

Stettler RCMP responded to a theft
of truck and skid steer in the town of
Stettler at a local business.
The owner of the vehicle was
assaulted while confronting the suspect,
who subsequently fled on July 29,
2019.
The following day, members of the
Bashaw and Stettler RCMP responded
to several reports of thefts and suspicious
persons in the rural areas of
Stettler, Camrose and Lacombe
Counties.
With the assistance of vigilant rural
residents, RCMP were able to locate
and arrest two suspects and recover a
stolen vehicle in the Bashaw area.
A 39-year-old male remains in custody,
and a 64-year-old male will
appear in Stettler Provincial Court on
September 12, 2019.
Later on July 30, the owner encountered
the same suspect operating the
original stolen truck and skid steer
north of Big Valley in the County of
Stettler.
Both a male and female suspect fled
the scene and RCMP Police Dog
Services were deployed but unable to
locate them.
Hours later, the Three Hills detachment
received numerous erratic
driving complaints and intercepted the
female suspect in a stolen vehicle.
Twenty nine-year-old Caryne Maree
Perry of southern Alberta was
arrested and charged with several
offences including flight from peace
officer, dangerous operation of a motor
vehicle and possession of stolen
property.
Perry was remanded into custody
and is set to appear on August 6, 2019
in Strathmore Provincial Court.
Ten hour standoff
leads to arrest
near Stettler

Stettler RCMP attempted
to stop a vehicle travelling at
a high rate of speed on
Secondary Highway 601,
near Pheasantback Golf
Course.
The vehicle began travelling
at excessive speeds and
failed to stop for police on
August 2, 2019 at approximately
7:45 p.m.
The driver and lone occupant
was known to police
and was identified as
23-year-old Richard George.
A police pursuit was not
initiated given the potential
risk to the public.
Police later attended the
George residence where he
brandished a shotgun.
The Stettler RCMP with
the assistance of the Bashaw
RCMP contained the area
and the RCMP Emergency
Response Team, Police Dog
Service (PDS) were
deployed.
George was taken into
custody without incident

The following day, July 31, the male
suspect was located in Big Valley and
arrested without incident.
Twenty eight-year-old Cameron
Kenneth Hayter of southern Alberta
was charged with several offences
including assault, theft over $5,000 and
possession of stolen property.
Hayter was remanded into custody
to appear in Stettler Provincial Court
on August 8, 2019.
These four individuals have been
identified as repeat property offenders
out of southern Alberta who are
alleged to be responsible for a number
of crimes in a very short period, travelling
to rural communities without ties
to any of the communities affected.
It was through effective coordination
and response by investigators
from Stettler, Bashaw, Three Hills, and
with the support of Air Services, Police
Dog Services, County of Stettler
Enforcement Services, numerous tips
and information from local citizens,
that these four individuals were
apprehended.
Three stolen trucks and a skid steer
were recovered.
RCMP remind members of the community
that crime prevention is a
shared responsibility and play an
important role in preventing criminal
activity.
The community is encouraged to:
Lock up houses, sheds, vehicles and
any other property that is easily accessible;
Never leave running vehicles
unlocked as nearly half of the vehicle
thefts in Alberta over the past year
have had the keys left inside; take
photos and record serial numbers of
property and if you see or suspect suspicious
activity notify police
immediately.

For their first time entering provincials,
the U11 Coronation Royals
baseball team made a fantastic debut.
The Royals travelled to St. Albert for
Baseball Alberta Tier VII Provincial
Championships from Fri. July 26 to
Sun. July 28 where they took home
silver medals.
The U11 division, previously known
as Mosquitos, is the first to have teams
qualify for provincials making this
win even sweeter.
Friday afternoon, in the first round
robin game of the weekend, the Royals
battled back late in the game but ended
up losing 19 – 14 to the Strathmore
Reds.
Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the
game from Coronation was Brady
Selzler.

“It was good,” began coach Brian
Selzler. “We started out with the loss in
a tough game but then after that the
kids battled hard and kept a good attitude
of no-quit right and that paid off
with the couple of wins to get us into
the finals.”
The team did their best but ended up
losing 9 to 5 in the final, earning silver
medals.
“Once they had a second to realize
what they had accomplished and think
about it, they were all pretty excited
with the fact that they had been one of
two teams to get a medal.”
Owen Heidecker was named MVP
for Coronation.
As for the season, coach Selzler was
content with the level of performance
and improvement made by players.

Hockey Canada has invited 26
Western Hockey League (WHL)
players, as part of a group of
112, to attend Canada’s National
Under-17 development camp as
the road to the 2019 World
Under-17 Hockey Challenge
begins.
Goaltender Drew Sim of Tees,
Alta. was
selected to
attend the camp
which took place
from July 19 to
July 26 at the
Markin
MacPhail Centre
at WinSport’s
Canada Olympic
Park.
“It was a
blast,” began
Sim. “I had a
good team.
Bunch of west
guys in my
group so it
wasn’t just sitting
around. I
has so guys I
could talk to
before it got
started.”
During the
week-long camp,
the players – 12 goaltenders, 36
defencemen and 64 forwards –
will be split into six teams for
on and off-ice training, fitness
testing, intrasquad games and
classroom studies.
Day one consisted of meetings
and coach and staff introductions
followed by practices and
meals as well as the lengthy list
of activities described.
A highlight was playing
against a host of new players
with different styles.
“Getting to meet a new set of
hockey players that I haven’t
played against for the past
couple of years was great like
meeting the guys from Quebec
and Ontario was kind of cool,”
said Sim.
The breakdown of WHL
players includes three goaltenders,
eight defencemen, and 15
forwards; nine of which were
from Alberta.
The process of narrowing
down these players began last
June and the Canada Winter
Games held in Red Deer in
January, 2019.
The list of WHL players
invited includes 17 who have
already made their WHL
debuts, led by Edmonton Oil
Kings forward Dylan Guenther,
the first-overall selection in the
2018 WHL Bantam Draft.
This camp is the first chance
these athletes have at possibly
making Team Canada.
“The national under-17 development
camp is the first step
these athletes take in their
Team Canada career,” said
Shawn Bullock, director of
men’s national teams in a
release issued by Hockey
Canada.
“Ultimately, these players
will learn what it takes to wear
the Maple Leaf in international
competition. We are here to support
their development by

regional scouts.

camp, players

These teams will be competing
at the 2019 World
Under-17 Hockey Challenge,
scheduled for Nov. 2-9 in
Medicine Hat, Alta., and Swift
Current, Sask.
Sim was infatuated with the
sport from a young age.
“I went out and tried it and
fell in love with it. I couldn’t
really skate or even move that
much but I just fell in love with
the game.”
He hopes to join the WHL as
early as next year with the goal
to eventually go pro and play for
his country more than once.

For the 2019 granting cycle the Community Enhancement Fund of Waste Connections
and PRWML anticipates awarding grants up to $25,000 and invites applications for
eligible projects from not for profit organizations, registered charities, and community
groups that provide services to the Paintearth Region. The intent of this community
fund is to distribute its grant funds to as many groups as possible. Larger amounts may
be considered depending upon expressed need and granting capacity. Projects should
contribute to the development of a healthy and diverse community. The charitable
purposes of this community are to:

Charles Page Thompson passed
away Aug. 1, 2019 at Three Hills
Continuing Care after suffering the
side effects of a stroke that happened in
Dec. 2017.
Leaving to mourn his loss are his
five children: Marian (Patrick)
Hemsing, Carol (David) Sisley,
Susan Hemsing, Kelly
Thompson and Harry
(Emerlita) Thompson.
Charles also leaves 16 grandchildren:

Charles was predeceased by his wife
of 56 years of marriage, Shirley,
mother Lotta Thompson, father Glen
Thompson, sisters Beulah Degiano
and Lois Thompson, brother Rex
Thompson, son-in-law James Hemsing,
granddaughter Angela Hemsing and
grandson Terry Thompson.
Charles was born in Hanna, Alta.
He lived on the farm northwest of
Craigmyle in the Victor District taking
his early school years in Kelvindale,

finishing at Craigmyle School.
In March 1950, he married Shirley
Evans and started their farming life
together by purchasing some land and
raising cattle.
He drove a school bus for ten years
while raising their five children.
Due to Mom’s illness, they moved
from the farm to Delia in
Dec. 2005 where he
remained until moving to
Paragon Place in Stettler,
Alta. in Sept. 2018.
In Feb. 2019 he moved to
Three Hills Continuing
Care.
Dad loved farming, but
mostly rebuilding or rather
remodelling things in the
Thompson shop.
When not farming, he
loved to go camping and fishing.
He enjoyed spending time with his
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
He was a life member of the Delia
Elks, joining in 1968 and going on to
become Exalted Ruler and later
District Deputy.
Dad requested that his body be
donated to the University of Alberta,
Division of Anatomy for Medical
Education.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be
made to the Canadian Diabetes
Association, Heart and Stroke Fund,
Three Hills Continuing Care or the
donor’s choice.
Funeral services will be held Fri.
Aug. 9 2019 at 2 p.m. at the Delia
Community Hall. Courtney Winters
Funeral Home is in the care of

the outdoor swimming pool offered a
free swim in the afternoon.

horses and gave free carriage rides
down main street
throughout the
day.

The hail storm that tore through
the Town of Stettler on Tues. July
30 was found to be as large as golf
balls. Warnings from Environment
Canada alerted of possible ‘nickelsized’
hail but residents soon found
this not to be the case. Accounts of
ripped siding, smashed sunroofs and
more have added to the large dollar
figure needed for repairs. Locals have
pieced together a list of surrounding
businesses for these necessary fixes
which has been shared on social
media.
