President’s Message
Gratitude and appreciation are two words that reflect these last couple of months for the
Friends. On April 28, the Friends Board held a reception honoring the Twentieth
Anniversary of the Founding Members. Ten of the original thirty-one families were
present and received certificates acknowledging their commitment and service to the West
Caldwell Public Library. A Proclamation was officially presented by the Mayor to recognize
the event and contribution of the original members. Additionally, the New Jersey State
Legislature issued a Joint Resolution from Senator Pennaccho, Assemblyman Webber and
Assemblywoman DeCroce congratulating the Friends on its Twentieth Anniversary, while
paying tribute to its record of service and commitment. We are fortunate to have two of
the original members on the Board of Trustees: Marilyn Rubino and Debbie Podvey; two members on the
current Friends’ Board: Polly Payne and Jane Berisso, and another person, Linda Garfinkel who serves as a
Reference Librarian. Representative Mikie Sherrill also acknowledged these five individuals with a certificate
commemorating their continuing contribution to the Friends.
We are grateful for the widespread recognition of our Founding members, and appreciate the vision of
those thirty-one families who joined together to support our library.
We are also grateful and appreciative to our larger community. Several local merchants have been
instrumental in the establishment of our Discount Card Program. When an individual or family joins the
Friends by paying their membership dues, they will be issued a card with dedicated discounts for the
membership year. Participants include: Asian Delite; Avenue Salon; Bromilow’s; Carvel; Chef V; Cloverleaf
Tavern; West Caldwell Club Pilates; Franco’s Pizza; Frank’s Trattoria; Chandelle’s Hallmark of West
Caldwell; Jersey Mike’s; Thatcher McGhee’s and West Essex Jewelers. This collaboration is one that will not
only benefit our members but these retailers as well. We are excited by their support and yours!
Additionally, Shop Rite of West Caldwell, Russillo’s, the Train Restaurant and Village Nails made a special
donation in support of our efforts. We thank each of these businesses for their generosity.
With a look to past achievements and an eye to the future, we will continue to dedicate our efforts to
support the West Caldwell Public Library.
??? Ask The Expert ???
Question: How are books selected for the Book Discussion
Groups?
Answer: The discussion leader uses different websites for book
club selections and reads the reviews. There are quite a few
websites to choose from such as Good Reads and Litlover. The
leader also takes suggestions from her members.
