Twentieth Anniversary of the Friends of the West
Caldwell Public Library
From the Desk of the President
Harriet Schenk
Twenty years ago, “The Sopranos” first aired on television.
“Sponge Bob Square Pants” and “The West Wing” both debuted
as well. “Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Episode” and “The
Matrix” were box office blockbusters. Britney Spears’ debut
album, “Baby One More Time” was on the radio. President
Clinton’s impeachment trial was in the news as was the
Columbine shooting and the plane crash of John F. Kennedy Jr and his wife,
Carolyn and her sister, Lauren Bessette. But right here in West Caldwell, New
Jersey, a group of volunteers, to be known as the “Friends of the West Caldwell
Public Library”, were also making their own history.
Twenty years ago, thirty-one dedicated families fulfilled a vision by forming a
group to support their public library. We are fortunate to currently have two of
the original members on the Library’s Board of Trustees, and two others on the
Friends’ Board. A modern “twentieth anniversary” gift is platinum. This metal
is known for its strength and endurance, just like the Friends. Today we strive
to continue the mantra of our founding members: to support our excellent
library, through its varied programs, concerts and lecture offerings; as well as
various patron opportunities like museum passes and access to Ancestry.com.
The Infobytes newsletter, delivered to members’ homes, continues to inform
our members of important events in a timely manner.
Twenty years later, it is the individuals who comprise the membership of the
Friends that enable us to continue to meet the needs of our library. We hope
you will help us to celebrate our past, with an eye to the future. Your
membership supplements the Library’s township budget allocations. As
members of the Friends, we are proud to be a part of our community’s
outstanding resource, the West Caldwell Public Library.
Join as a member and continue with us on the journey to our next
anniversary!
Membership forms are available in the Library.
from the marches of Dr. Martin Luther King to the election of Barack Obama. Her
great contributions in the field of politics is the thread that connects the two.
Dudnick will speak about the circumstances which drew Alice Tregay to the
Ask the Expert
Question: I am going on a vacation but do not want to
carry a book. I plan to use my Kindle and would like to
download a bestseller book, but I probably will need
more than two weeks to read it. What are my options? If
possible, how do I do this?
Answer: One way to download library ebooks would be
via the Overdrive or Libby apps. On Kindle, it's most
likely Overdrive that will be offered in the Google Play
Store. All you need is your library card. Libby and
Overdrive is like any other library book: only one person
can take one copy out at a time, and if there is a hold,
you will have to wait for it. You also may not be able to
keep the book for two weeks. If you are on vacation or
need the book longer, these options might not be the
best for you. In that case, try Hoopla Digital. You can
sign up for an account using your library card, and you
don't have to worry about waiting for the book. Anyone
can download an item no matter who is waiting for it.
You can renew it without worrying about whether
anyone else has a hold on it.
If you need any help downloading or using the apps,
you are welcome to call the Library at (973-226-5441) or
stop in so we can show you.
