Bicycling to beat cancer
Messenger photo by Rick Palsgrove
Nearly 7,500 bicyclists participated in this year’s Pelotonia bicycle tour, which passed through Groveport
on Aug. 3 and included a rest stop at Cruiser Park. So far this year, Pelotonia has raised $14 million that
will go towards cancer research through The Ohio State University’s James Cancer Hospital. In 11 years,
Pelotonia has raised $197 million to fight cancer. Pictured here are cyclists passing under a large
American flag that hung from an American Electric Power (AEP) truck on Bixby Road in Groveport.
Groveport City Councilman and AEP employee Shawn Cleary coordinated the flag and truck set-up, in
conjunction with AEP and the city of Groveport, to offer support to the cyclists. See additional Pelotonia
photos on page 3 and online at www.columbusmessenger.com (look under Southeast News).
State audit offers
views of Groveport
Information on finances & demographics
By Rick Palsgrove
Southeast Editor
The city of Groveport recently received a positive financial
audit report from State Auditor Keith Faber’s office.
“Although there were no major new industrial projects in 2018,
the economic position of the city continued to strengthen through
corporate expansion,” said Groveport City Treasurer Jason Carr.
“A large number of employers in the city expanded their operations,
adding additional jobs and proving long-term commitment
to the city.”
Carr said Groveport’s industrial and commercial area has now
grown to nearly 25 million square feet and speculative development
of warehouse and distribution space “continues to thrive in
a stronger economy.”
“The city’s Groveport-Rickenbacker Employee Access Transit
program provides value to companies in the Rickenbacker area,”
said Carr. “By the end of 2018, this program had provided more
than 80,000 rides to commuting workers at nearly all of the companies
located in both Groveport and, by contract, the village of
Obetz.”
Groveport’s main source of revenue is the 2 percent city income
tax.
“On the modified accrual basis of accounting, income tax revenue
accounted for 89.5 percent of all general fund revenue,” said
Carr. “The city is expecting to maintain a consistent level of
income taxes revenue due to the recovering economy and
increased employment within the city.”
Carr said the operations of the city’s street maintenance and
repair, recreation and aquatic center, and golf course funds do not
generate sufficient revenues from state and local sources to cover
expenditures and requires assistance from the general fund.
“As income taxes fluctuate, the city’s ability to provide assistance
to these funds from the general fund may become impacted,”
said Carr.
Demographics of city’s residents
The state auditor’s report on the city of Groveport’s audit also
revealed interesting information about the city’s demographics
regarding the median
household income,
median age,
and educational levels
of city residents
as well as population.
“It’s important to
understand that the
demographic information
presented in
the financial report
is not really used for
anything more than
just to present a
AUDIT
Continued from page 1
general snapshot of the community,” said Groveport
City Development Director Jeff Green. “Much of the
information is pulled by the accounting firm preparing
the statements from American Community Survey
(ACS) data. This data, especially the further out from
the last census we get, tends to be less accurate.”
According to the recent state audit and ACS data,
the city’s population has only grown by 224 in the past
10 years from 5,421 to 5,645.
“Since the city’s population grew by roughly 30 percent
between 1990 and 2000, then by another 30 percent
between 2000 and 2010, I think it’s safe to say
that the ACS population data is very conservative,”
said Green. “Still, I don’t anticipate another 30 percent
increase for 2010 and 2020. Right now, based on the
number of building permits we have issued for new
residential construction, I would estimate our population
to be between 5,600-5,800.”
The annual median household income for city residents
dropped from $70,855 to $59,459 in the past 10
years, according to the state audit and the ACS. The
state audit and ACS also show in the past 10 years the
median age of the city’s residents rose from 39.8 to 42.
“Again, this is based on ACS estimates, but one factor
might be our aging population,” said Green. “We
have a high percentage of retired and/or senior residents,
including the whole population of Groveport
Senior Center. We actually don’t have a very high percentage
of our residents employed in our warehouses.”
Regarding the education level of city residents, the
state audit and ASC indicate the number of residents
holding a bachelor’s degree or higher has dropped in
the past 10 years from 27.2 percent to 22.3 percent.
“It’s hard to determine how ACS arrived at that statistic,”
said Green.
Top employers in Groveport
The state audit also lists a top 10 comparison of the
city’s biggest employers in 2012 and 2018. In both
years, GAP Inc. Direct/GPS Consumer Direct was the
top employer in town with 1,200 employees in 2012
and 1,700 in 2018.
The remaining top employers and their number of
employees in 2012 were: Distribution Fulfillment
Systems, 600; AC Delco, 335; Groveport Madison
Schools, 220; Cardinal Health, 200; Springs Windows
Fashions, 175; Pinnacle Data Systems, 150; Sofa
Express, 150; Union Supply Co., 128; and Waxman
Consumer Group, 100.
Cruisers Day features the Cruiser marching band, Cruiserettes,
and cheerleaders. Hours are 4-7 p.m.
Visit Groveport’s Hendren Cemetery
The Groveport Cemetery Committee will open the historic
Hendren Cemetery to the public for visits on Sept. 7 from 9-11
a.m. The cemetery is located in Groveport on the west side of State
Route 317, north of Main Street and south of the railroad tracks.
Groveport City Council President and cemetery committee member
Shawn Cleary said the gate to the cemetery, located along
State Route 317, will be open to allow vehicles to enter and parking
is available near the cemetery. Email Cleary at scleary@groveport.org
for information.
In 2018, the remaining top employers and their
number of employees were: Eddie Bauer LLC, 800;
Faro Logistics, 425; Amstead Rail Co., Inc., 350;
Groveport Madison Schools, 310; Honeywell, 300;
Stella & Dot, 250; Cardinal Health, 200; Kraft Foods,
170; and FedEx, 150.
Only three employers are on the list in both 2012
and 2018 - GPS/The Gap, Groveport Madison Schools,
and Cardinal Health.
“We’ve had a couple companies leave, others who
have expanded and added to their workforce and some
that have downsized for various reasons,” said Green.
“It’s really hard to make a blanket statement for why
this occurs. The count is based upon income tax withholding
for the most part, along with information generated
through our tax incentive review each year.”
Nine of the current top 10 employers are warehouse/distribution
based (only Groveport Madison
Schools is not).
“That’s because our employment base is more than
90 percent warehouse and distribution,” said Green.
According to the state audit, total employment in
the city in 2018 was 14,450 compared to 5,200 in 2012.
“The 2012 number was based on the count of
employees of companies receiving a tax abatement and
I’m not even sure how the number ended up being used
since it did not include employers whose abatements
have expired or who have never received an abatement,”
said Green.
Carr said by the end of 2018 more than 12,000 people
were employed in the city.
“The city’s commercial and industrial area currently
houses Gap, Eddie Bauer, Yokohama Tire, Cardinal
Health, FedEx, Build A Bear, Kubota, McGraw Hill,
Kraft Foods and many other distribution facilities of
national and international companies,” said Carr. “The
bulk of the city’s tenants are retail or auto industry
based.”
Green said, since 2010, the city has seen the construction
of at least eight new warehouse and distribution
facilities, all of which are now filled.
“We have seen expansions at Gap, Eddie Bauer,
Franklin, International, Faro Logistics, & FedEx, to
name a few,” said Green.
Cruisers’ experience a plus on the field this year
By Rick Palsgrove
Southeast Editor
The Groveport Madison Cruiser football
team is loaded with experience this year
which has raised expectations for a winning
season.
“We think that we have a strong senior
class returning for this season, along with a
lot of returning juniors who played a significant
amount of time last year,” said
Groveport Madison Cruiser varsity head football
coach Bryan Schoonover. “We are hoping
that having an experienced football team will
help translate to a successful season.”
Schoonover said some of the top players
on the team this year are offensive/defensive
linemen Te-Rah Edwards, Nick
Wheeler, and Tykel Hancock-Anderson;
defensive ends/tight ends Jasiyah
Robinson and Derrell Smoot; running
back/linebacker Emanual Anthony; linebacker/fullback
Skyler Mouser; and linebacker/fullback
Allen Joyce.
“These young men are multiple year
returners who bring great leadership, enthusiasm,
and a hard nose mentality this team
will need to be successful,” said Schoonover.
Schoonover said the teams to beat in the
Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division
this year are defending champion Canal
Winchester and New Albany.
“Canal won the league last year and
New Albany has won multiple titles since
the switch over four years ago, so, without
hesitation these are the two teams everyone
will be gunning for this season,” said
Schoonover.
When asked why the annual neighborhood
rivalry games with Canal Winchester
(on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at Cruiser Stadium)
and with Hamilton Township (on Sept. 5 at
7 p.m. at Fortress Obetz) are important to
the players and communities, Schoonover
said, “These are two games are important
because they are your neighbors. The players
all know one another, have grown up
together and flat out want to beat each
other. For our community I believe it’s the
same thing. People always go back to when
they were growing up and the rivalry
between those teams, and competitive
nature takes over and the community
becomes emotionally involved and circle
their calendar for those two games. I also
just want to make this very clear, these are
two games we have circled year in and year
out, we talk about those games and we
prep for those games year round, so when
people ask how special those games are,
without question, they are different and
will be treated as so.”
High school football is rich in traditions,
and Schoonover said there are a couple of
Cruiser team traditions he really likes.
“The first is the Fourth of July parade in
The Hamilton Township Rangers are
getting ready to begin their quest for the
Mid-State League Buckeye Division football
title.
“It may sound cliche, but I believe our
team’s prospects for success are dependent
on how we operate as individuals, position
groups, and ultimately as a team,” said
Hamilton Township varsity football head
coach Mike Savino. “We’ve had an excellent
off season in terms of players holding
each other accountable and consistently
working hard. The players saw the result
of their hard work in the weight room
gains and now it is transferring to the field
during our summer contact days and practices.
If we can marry our talent with our
beliefs, we have a chance to be a very good
team this year.”
Savino said the Rangers’ top players
this year are a mix of ages. He added the
team also has some players who are going
to be a surprise to people when they see
them making plays.
“In terms of returners, we bring back
our linebacking core in junior Malcolm
Denny, junior Josiah Beverly, and sophomore
Riley Gibbs,” said Savino. “We think,
on paper, that is our strongest position
group. Returning starters/lettermen senior
linemen are Gage Blosser, Creed Tackett,
and Dre Stevens - all of whom have had
Groveport,” said Schoonover. “I love the
Fourth for starters, but I love our players
being in the parade walking down the
street interacting with the community. It
just brings a great sense of pride to me.”
Schoonover said the second tradition he
is fond of is the teams’ senior dinner.
“Our mother club does a great job making
our last team meal special for our senior
class,” said Schoonover. “Last year we had
our coaches serve the players and the mothers.
It’s a time where there is still work to
be done, but also a good time to reflect back
on the time spent with our senior class.”
See the Groveport Madison Cruisers’ 2019
varsity football schedule on page 7.
Rangers ready for season
great careers and big contributions to the
program. We also return some explosive
skilled players in running back/defensive
back Jaylan Baldwin, wide receiver/defensive
back Ato Forson, quarterback/defensive
back Derek Larimer, running
back/linebacker Bradley Maynard, and
wide receiver/defensive back Deshan
Peart.”
Savino added there are several players
in the junior and sophomore classes who
will compete for starting varsity jobs this
year.
Savino said the MSL Buckeye Division
is strong.
“Every team is the team to beat in our
league, especially recently,” said Savino.
“If we don’t play to our potential and with
an edge each week, we will be giving any of
our league opponents a chance to beat us.
Every team in our league is coached well
and we’ve had some excellent players go on
to have outstanding college, and sometimes
beyond, football careers who played
in the MSL - it is a very challenging league
to be a part of, and we enjoy that.”
A highlight of the team’s schedule is the
annual rivalry game with the Groveport
Madison Cruisers at Fortress Obetz, which
this year will take place Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.
“I think the Groveport game is important
because the rivalry inspires and
encourages the communities to participate
in the game of football,” said Savino. “The
game has so much to offer to those who
participate on the field and behind the
scenes - those are memories I have as a
youngster running around and the atmosphere
of a Friday night football game. I
think that’s the reason it goes so well at
Fortress. Fortress Obetz creates such a
unique atmosphere and they have always
done an amazing job with their operations
for all the games we’ve played on their
field. From a team and player standpoint,
the location of the two districts creates
competition in itself. We share some borders
and we’ve also got players and students
in our district who have family members
that live close enough to visit each
other every day, but go to the different
schools. The locations of the districts and
the bragging rights at stake make it an
instant rivalry game.”
When asked what his favorite Ranger
football team tradition is, Savino said it is
recognizing the players and units of the
The Groveport Special Olympics’ track and field team competed at the State
Summer Games held on The Ohio State University campus June 28-30. The athletes
competed in running events and softball throw with other athletes from all
over Ohio. The GSO athletes are, from left to right: (front row) Nick Zungri, Becca
Breedlove, Elexia Smith, Sophie Coffenberry, Mikayla Thompson; (back row) volunteer
week prior to eating the team meal every
Thursday night.
“I think as coaches, we spend so much of
our time with our players trying to get
more out of them, sometimes because we
see the hidden potential locked inside the
teenage psyche,” said Savino. “Having a
chance to just recognize the great job each
player or unit did, from the star player of
the week to the scout team player of the
week - and see the reactions from the kids
of a job well done.”
Savino said Hamilton Township also
has great traditions between the team and
band as well.
“We have an excellent band with great
leadership and after every game, win or
lose, our team joins up and sings the HTHS
Alma Mater with the music being played
by the band,” said Savino. “The community
has really taken to this fairly new tradition
of ours.”
Funding students’ futures
By Rick Palsgrove
Southeast Editor
Education is expensive and a helping
hand financially can make all the difference
for one’s future.
There is available scholarship money
providing such help for Groveport Madison
students. Groveport Madison Education Is
The Way is one organization supplying
these funds and it wants to increase its
endowment so it can continue to assist
those pursuing their higher education.
Education Is The Way provides postsecondary
education financial assistance
with grants to eligible Groveport Madison
students who are graduates of Groveport
Madison High School, Cruiser Academy,
Eastland Career Center, and Fairfield
Career Center. It aids in the students’
efforts to pay for their education at universities,
colleges, trade schools, technical
schools, and other training programs.
“There is money available simply for the
asking for eligible students,” said
Education Is The Way Executive Director
Kathy Weiser. “We want to support our
students and we want them to know there
is money there to further their education.”
Established in 1990, Education Is The
Way is a local independent, non-profit
organization lead by a board of trustees
and managed by The Columbus
Foundation. Its endowment fund, currently
totaling $587,000, according to Weiser,
provides grants to students ranging from
$500 to $1,000 per year that are available
for up to four years. Students must apply
each year for the grant.
Since awarding its first grants in 1993
to eight students, scholarships totaling
more than $309,000 have been awarded. In
2019, 31 students received scholarships
totaling $22,000, according to Weiser.
Students must have a 2.0 grade point
average and show financial need to be eligible
for funds.
Weiser wants to raise awareness in the
community about the program through the
organization’s Facebook page, by visiting
schools, talking with parents, and meeting
with civic groups, businesses, and school
district employees.
The organization is also working to
increase donations to its financial endowment,
which is funded by donations from
businesses, alumni, and community members.
“Paul and Chris Bowser have pledged
matching funds up to $10,000 for donations
to Education Is The Way received by
December,” said Weiser. “Chris is one of
our board members and worked for
Groveport Madison Schools for 33 years.”
Weiser said that when you give, it
graduate, is a scholar and an athlete.
of several scholarships she received.
Student feedback on the program
Here is a sampling from letters sent to
Education Is The Way from students who
received scholarships:
•Audrey Brown, class of 2019: “This
will help me as I pursue a teaching degree
from Ohio University. Thank you again for
contributing to my future.”
•Alexis Poliseno: “This fall I will wrap
up my remaining classes (at Wittenberg
University) to be eligible to student teach
in the spring. Then in the spring I will graduate
with a degree in education and hopefully
licensure in both early childhood education
and as an intervention specialist.
The goal is to come back to central Ohio,
possibly coming back to Groveport, and
completing the circle of my education.
Groveport is my home and has supported
me in every adventure I have ever taken.”
•Kevin Jones, Jr.: “I’ll never forget
those who helped me every step of the
way...As I wrap up my last full year of
undergrad (at Wright State University),
I’ve been offered two post-college positions
politically.”
comes back to the community.
“Kids are our strength. One day they will
return from their studies to contribute to
the community in many ways,” said Weiser.
Future educators travel to learn
from top educators
During summer break, Dr. Valerie Jones,
Teacher Education Chair and Dr. Jeanne Bruce,
Associate Professor, traveled with five pre-service
educators to Helsinki, Finland, and
Stockholm, Sweden to study the top-two school
systems in the world. The group was able to tour
a Finnish grade school to observe their curriculum
and instruction and speak with students and
teachers. In Sweden, they visited a university and
learned about Swedish high schools and transitioning
to higher education.
The pre-service educators were significantly
impacted by what they saw and learned. Makayla
Harr (’20), Adolescence to Young Adult Math
Education major, remarked, “I loved that the
schools not only promoted academic success but
encouraged creativity and prioritized life skills
and the arts as much as academics. Their education
system focuses well on the individual. Their
students had choices in electives starting at a
young age, and some were accelerated in their
strongest subjects, and I loved that.”
Dr. Jones added, “This learning experience
was the first of many for our department. We
learned much and plan to spread what we’ve
learned to other educators through conference
presentations and workshops.” Next spring, students
will be able to have another learning experience
