That is the lasting impact from a three-day concert festival held a half century ago known simply as Woodstock. Historian Jim Gibbons was on-hand at Mokena Community Public Library District Saturday, Aug. 10, to give a lecture on Woodstock — which officially turns 50 Thursday, Aug. 15 — and provide audience members with some insight into how organizers, musicians and, by some estimates, some 500,000 festival-goers made it all possible. “A whole great big bunch of people together and everybody was totally in harmony with each other, which is unbelievable to have, like, 500,000 people there — and I want to say that there were a million behind that, there was a lot of people there — and to have total peace, that is truly amazing,” Gibbons said. Gibbons gave much of the credit for the festival’s success to Michael Lang, the co-creator of Woodstock, who was only 24 years old at the time. To understand just how special that peace was, Gibbons said, you must place Woodstock in the context of the turbulent times that were the 1960s. “We were having in the ’60s nothing but chaos,” Gibbons said. “President [John F.] Kennedy was assassinated, Robert Kennedy was assassinated, Martin Luther King, we had riots, we had the war Historian Jim Gibbons poses by a memory board from the 1969 Woodstock festival used during his presentation of the 50th anniversary of the festival Saturday, Aug. 10, at Mokena Community Public Library District. Kremer III/22nd Century Media in Vietnam, all this kind of — in fact in 1968 at the Democratic National Convention we had all the rioting and that kind of stuff, and to have all this peace [at Woodstock] was unheard of. But [Lang] was able to pull that off and accomplish that by the end of the decade in 1969.” Gibbons pointed out that only three people died during Woodstock: one had an appendix burst, one died from a heroin overdose and one was tragically run over by a tractor. While festival-goers managed to avoid significant problems with their fellow man, Mother Nature was a different story; however, one of the performers, Melanie, came up with a makeshift solution that has passed down through the ages. “They had tremendous problems with weather that was very, very bad,” Gibbons said. “In fact, at one point they weren’t sure if the lights were going to go out and they’d lose power. So, what she did is she put candles up on the stage. And, so, with that, some of the crowd started putting candles out, and here came out the cigarette lighters. And now today we have cellphones. And all that [crowd lighting up a venue] came out of Woodstock.” One interesting tidbit Gibbons shared with his audience was a little known fact that Lang actually had someone other than Jimi Hendrix in mind to close out the festival: Roy Rogers. “They wanted him to sing, ‘Happy Trails,’ the Roy Rogers sign off,” Gibbons said. “Roy Rogers turned them down because he figured, ‘Hey, what the heck, these hippies, gypsies and flippies are going to boo me off the stage.’” In the end we got Hendrix’s iconic version of “The Star Spangled Banner,” which turned out pretty good.
