membrance Ceremony at the Police Officers Memorial in Albany on May 7th. It is always an honor being there during Police Week. This year our department added 3 more names to the wall. Since I last attended the event, the wall has expanded in size. Unfortunately we continue to lose more of our brothers and sisters to 911 related illnesses. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It is also is a very painful month for my family as we remember my brother, 3rd Pct Police Officer Steven Clifford who took his own life on May 23, 2017. We recently celebrated his birthday on May 10th. He would have been 37 years old this year. We miss him so much and nothing will ever replace him. My family and I share our story and feelings with others in the hopes that if you know someone who needs help or if you have thoughts about hurting yourself, please reach out to someone. The National Suicide Prevention Hotline can be reached at 1-800-273-8255 24 hours a day. You can even chat with them online if you do not feel comfortable speaking on the phone. As always, please take a moment to check and see who your beneficiaries are and if they need to be updated. “Like it is...” Retired Delegate Raymond Gene I am back to write a few paragraphs in the Squeal Desk to tell it “Like it is.” My congratulations go out to the DAI Board for their unopposed appointment to run the Detectives’ Association for 4 more years. They happen to be doing a great job and my theory is, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I happen to know that they look out for us retirees or as we are referred to in jolly old England, “Pensioners.” The membership may be interested in this bit of information I received from my friend Jeff Gross, 1st VP from our DAI; A bill was passed in Albany recently making it mandatory for the County to reimburse members for their annual Medicare deductions. Prior to this law, it was a bargaining chip between the unions and the county. No longer the case. In addition, the Governor attempted to cap the deduction reimbursement to $135 a month or approximately the amount that is now being deducted. This was shot down in consideration of future increases by Medicare. So as it stands, even if there is an increase, you will be reimbursed. This is a big win for not only the unions but also the retired members. If you pay over the standard deduction you will still have to apply directly to the Comptroller’s Office for the additional funds. You are entitled to full reimbursement for over payment of part B and D, I hope I haven’t confused you. In short, we will continue to be reimbursed for our Medicare deductions. I must apologize to my readers for all the spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes I make when writing this article. To be perfectly honest with you, I attended the New York School of Printing back in the 50s and 60s and for the most part you got to print what was already prepared for you by the staff. Pretty much like copy and paste. So, “bare” with me lol. Anyhow, on Monday May 5th, I attended a ceremony for our dear and departed member Michael “Mickey” Gilbride. A plaque was dedicated in his honor and is displayed in the Fourth Squad. It was a very good turnout and it felt good to see numerous former 4th Squad members show up. The dedication was held outside in the front of the new precinct. It looked like geriatrics’ ward. We were then able to go upstairs to get a look at the new squad area. My honest opinion, it looks like a maze that was set up for a puzzle. Apparently, everyone has their own space and all the desks are surrounded by low dividers. The only way a detective can leave his/her desk is by walking down the middle isle. I did not see any areas where you could conduct a “proper” interview, if you get my drift. I’m told that there are interview rooms available for just that purpose but you better make sure your hair is combed and your suit is pressed. Smile, you’re on candid camera. But these are changing times and everything must be politically correct. Go figure! We have the picnic coming up in June and I understand that in order for it to run smoothly, caterers are being brought in. What happened to good old fashion camaraderie? It use to be that this event attracted all sorts of volunteers. Go figure! In my last article, I mentioned the fact that I was in the car business. A few of you laughed and wanted to know what else I was into. Well low and behold I have made numerous sales through Toyota over the last few months. I don’t want to advertise cause I’m cheap and I write this column so I don’t have to pay for an ad. But you’re dealing with family and family always comes first. So, if you are interested in buying a new Toyota get in touch with me. And no, I don’t sell watches. And finally, over the years, I have mentioned my mother-in-law and relayed some funny moments that occurred over the years. She made it to 102 and the parts just wore out or she would still be whippin my arse in cards. By the time this article hits the streets, I think she will be back in Syracuse with her beloved husband Pete. So, Nana, as she was affectionately called by her family and friends, Rest in Peace and We love you. And that my friend’s is telling it, “Like it is.” 23
