Spark Plugs Need to Be Replaced Periodically
That little engine part called the spark plug performs a
huge job in delivering a vehicle’s power, performance,
dependaility and fuel efficiency and, according to the non
profit ar are ouncil, should e replaced periodically.
• • •
“Spark plugs are one of the hardest working
parts of a vehicle. A spark plug can fire
400 times per minute per cylinder or 1,600
times a minute on a four-cylinder engine,”
said Rich White, executive director, Car
Care Council. “Many car owners delay spark
plug repair on their vehicles, even after they
have failed. This is a mistake since fouled,
damaged or worn out spark plugs can lead to
engine damage, reduced fuel efficiency and
poor performance like misfiring, hard starting
and sluggish acceleration.”
If you spot any of the following symptoms,
the Car Care Council recommends having
your vehicle checked to prevent more costly
problems from developing.
Rattling, pinging or knocking noises. When
spark plugs begin to misfire, you may notice
unusual noises from the force of the pistons
and combustion not working properly. Pistons
travel at high velocities; if the spark plug
fires at the wrong time, this could lead to constant
rattling, pinging or knocking sounds.
Hard vehicle start. If your car is having
trouble starting or just feels disjointed and
jerky, your spark plugs may not be working
right. This can lead to misfires and erratic
performance.
Reduced performance. Spark plugs fire
when you accelerate and change gears. If the
spark that the plug generates isn’t functioning
at 100 percent, your vehicle performance
will be poor, and you’ll experience a sluggish
and fuel-wasting drive.
Poor fuel economy. Lots of things can lead
to poor fuel economy. In the case of old spark
plugs, fuel is wasted because your vehicle
fails to receive the proper, heat-generating
spark at the right time.
The Car Care Council recommends that
consumers consult their owner’s manual for
the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended
spark plug replacement intervals. The council
also recommends replacing all of the plugs
at the same time and with the same type of
spark plug that the vehicle was originally
equipped.
“Replacing spark plugs is a relatively
inexpensive maintenance task and can be
performed by a do-it-yourselfer or by a professional
technician at any auto repair shop,”
said White.
The Car Care Council is the source of
information for the “Be Car Care Aware”
consumer education campaign promoting
the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance
and repair to consumers. For the latest
car care news, visit the council’s online media
room at http://media.carcare.org. To order a
AOT Reports Low Fatality Rate On
Vermont Highways In 2019
The Vermont Agency of Transportation
(AOT) reports a low number of fatalities on
the state’s highways for the year to date.
Statistically, Vermont experiences approximately
25-35 fatalities on its highways
through the end of July. This year, there have
been 13 fatalities.
“While the reduction in the fatality rate so
far this year is worth noting, we must be
mindful that thirteen people lost their lives,”
said Transportation Secretary Joe Flynn.
“One fatality is one too many.”
There are several possible reasons for the
lower fatality rate so far this year. One predominant
reason is that motorists are making
better decisions. AOT highway safety
experts believe that there is greater public
awareness about the dangers of distracted
driving and driving under the influence of
alcohol or drugs.
“We need to be vigilant with our highway
safety efforts to continue moving toward our
goal of zero deaths,” said Keith Flynn,
Manager of the Behavioral and Data Units in
the State Highway Safety Office.
While the number of fatalities fluctuates
from year to year, the low 2019 fatality rate is
noteworthy. Through the end of July, in
2018, there were 36 fatalities; in 2017, there
were 31; and in 2016, there were 36.
Lowering the fatality rate and reaching the
goal of zero fatalities is a common effort:
Each driver’s behavior affects everyone else
on the road.
Each fatality on our roadways is a terrible
loss that needs to be avoided. AOT asks all
motorists to commit to one another and
keep lowering fatalities by slowing down,
putting our phones away when we drive, and
not driving under the influence of drugs
and/or alcohol.
A look back at July 2019 Weather Statistics
Barre-Montpelier VT
Highest temperature: 90 degrees on the 20th
Coldest daytime high: 66 degrees on the 22nd
Lowest temperature: 45 degrees on the 8th
Warmest minimum: 67 degrees on the 20th
Monthly average 68.9 degrees which was 1.8 degrees above normal
Heating Degree days 9 Normal 37
Cooling degree days 37 Normal 105
Average daytime sky cover: 3/10ths or mostly sunny
Heaviest precipitation: 1.72” on the 28th
Accumulated July precipitation 5.62” Normal 4.08” this was 138%
of normal
Thunderstorm days: 6 on the 6th, 11th, 20th, 28th, 30th, 31st
Strongest winds 37 mph on the 20th from the north
July 2019 – More sunshine, above normal temperatures moderately
wet & stormy
July temperature average for 2019 was warmer than normal by
1.8 degrees. This was the first month registering above normal
going all the way back to October 2018. July broke into summer
mode with the most outstanding weather parameter seeing least
amount in cloud cover averaging only 3 tenths of cloud cover making
the month predominantly mostly sunny. Rainfall during the
summer is wettest during the months of July and August typically,
but much of the time the precipitation is convective associated
with quick unloading thunderstorms that may only affect a small
portion of any day, so big month totals of rainfall during the summer
do not completely explain weather conditions when you have
mostly sunny skies on average.
We hit 90 degrees on the 20th where there were 4 warm to hot
periods during the 3rd through the 6th, the 10th, 19th thru the
21st, and 26th through the 30th, the longest stretch.
Environmental conditions for the month of July also showed a
nice rise in surface lake water temperatures especially suitable for
swimming during the last of the warm spells and this continued
in to the first couple weeks of August. The typical lush green of
July with numerous opportunities to cut and dry hay. Downpours
rutted out many a back gravel road and this is par for usual in a
summer for Vermont.
Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide (CO2)…
Early August 2019 measurement for Carbon Dioxide (CO2) was
410.34 ppm as measured at the Mauna Loa Observatory. Carbon
Dioxide level maxed in the mid May with 415.39 ppm. Carbon dioxide
levels were now more than the earth has seen going back 3
million years. Carbon Dioxide decreases during the summer and
early fall months as the green landscapes of the northern Hemisphere
pulls down carbon dioxide levels and restores some of this
in the ground where by now we have learned to keep it unless you
want catastrophic consequences.
World Climate Notes….
The Melting Arctic reveals Caveman-Era Landscapes
Parts of the Arctic have now melted enough to expose landscapes
that had been entombed in ice for 40,000 to 115,000 years.
Scientists studying Baffin Island, Canada — a snowy mountain
range rising from the Arctic Sea — have found land that was last
ice free when our ancestors were dallying with Neanderthals, according
to a paper published Friday in Nature Communications.
The researchers went to these newly exposed spots looking for
plants frozen thousands of years ago. If this were a B-movie, they
would have discovered a reanimated ice worm, or some contagion
that transformed humans into mewling armadillo-people. But,
because real life isn’t always so exciting, they found the remnants
of frozen moss. They determined that these plants were at least
40,000 years old, suggesting that glaciers last retreated there when
humans were first making their way into Europe, sketching animals
and tracing their hands on cave walls.
Simon Pendleton, the paper’s lead author and a doctoral researcher
at the University of Colorado, Boulder, noted that these
northern glaciers are on the front line of climate change. The consequences
are easy to see.
“The Arctic is currently warming two to three times faster than
the rest of the globe, so naturally, glaciers and ice caps are going to
react faster,” he said in a statement.
July Hottest Month Globally – and regionally since instrumental
records have been kept…
This July was the hottest month ever recorded in several New
England cities, including Boston.
The month turned out to be the hottest on record dating back to
1872, when weather records for the city began. Portland, Maine,
Manchester, New Hampshire, and Hartford, Connecticut also set
heat records. The average temperature in Boston was 78.5 degrees
for the month with 12 days surpassing 90 degrees. Of the 10 warmest
months in Boston history, six of them have occurred in the last
decade.
And it hasn’t exactly cooled off at night. Writing for WBUR,
meteorologist David Epstein explains why: “The nights have been
incredibly warm. Part of the reason the nights have been so tropical
is due to something called the urban heat island effect. This
keeps cities like Boston warmer than the surrounding countryside.
“All the concrete and other building materials radiate the heat
absorbed during the day and keep cities warmer at night. Both
daytime and nighttime temperatures have been on the rise over
the past several decades, but the nights have been outpacing the
rate of change, partially because of all the building that’s going on
in Boston.”
Heat Waves this summer have been blistering & widespread
In late July into early August, extremely warm Saharan Desert
air tracked north across portions of Europe for the second time in
a row setting all-time records there, before continuing to migrate
northwest into Iceland and eventually Greenland. This not only affected
northern Europe where there is little air conditioning as its
predominantly cool and heat waves tempered and short, however
as those extreme warm temperatures developed across the Greenland
Ice Sheet, those temperatures rose above freezing, melting
snow at the Summit Station (10,550 feet above sea level) for the
first time since July 2012 and perhaps only the third time in the last
seven centuries.
Across lower elevations around the margins of the ice sheet,
bare glacial ice melted at an unprecedented rates with losses likely
exceeding any point in at least the past 70 years.
The Greenland ice sheet covers an area the size of Alaska with
enough ice to raise global sea level by more than 20 feet. Greenland
gains ice each winter from compacting snow accumulation and
loses ice from melt water and icebergs discharged to the ocean. A
dry, warm spring this year left a thin snow cover over bare glacial
ice. Spring warming followed by a large melt event in June led scientist
Jason Box of the Geological Survey of Greenland to predict
record ice losses this year. The peak of the melt season passed in
mid-July with more typical summer conditions, but then returned
again with a recent Arctic Heat Wave.
This latest heat wave was particularly unusual as a dome
of warm air arrived from the east, associated with the remnants
of the record-setting European heat wave last month. Most large
melt events on Greenland involve warm, humid air masses arriving
from North America and the western Atlantic Ocean.
Air masses originating over North Africa are known to reach
Greenland — Saharan dust has been traced to the ice sheet — but
this recent air mass was exceptionally warm. By following the
path of the heat wave, scientists predicted the extensive melt several
days in advance. Air temperatures at Summit hovered near
or above freezing for more than 11 hours during one day in early
August, which is nearly twice as long as the last melt event there
in 2012.
Mass losses from Greenland this past week were already approaching
levels not expected until 2070 based on the best available
models. It is still too early to tell if the ice losses for the summer
will exceed the losses in 2012, but it is clear that the Greenland
ice sheet is rapidly responding to climate change, even faster than
many scientists expected. These rapid changes point to the necessity
for action on climate change and for improved observing systems
to monitor the ice sheet.
The Climbing Fern is Back in Vermont
Last observed in Vermont in 1997, the
climbing fern has been spotted again growing
in the Northeast Kingdom, according to
Vermont Fish & Wildlife’s botanist Bob Popp.
Considered extirpated in the state, the
climbing fern (Lygodium palmatum), was
confirmed by botanist Art Gilman along a
VELCO-owned powerline. Powerlines in
Vermont can be hotspots for rare, threatened,
and endangered plants, and VELCO is working
with botanists to conserve the fern.
Climbing fern typically grows a few feet tall
in open boggy areas and is the only species of
fern found in the Northeast that is a vine.
Though the species is considered apparently
secure globally, climbing fern is uncommon in
states where it occurs, from Florida to New
Hampshire, with only 48 known populations
in New England. It is rare in northern New
England and while this patch may have been
there all along, it is possible that it is moving
north in response to climate change.
The climbing fern was one of several historically
documented species that were rediscovered
in Vermont this year.
“We have been finding larger numbers of
long-missing plant species in the last few
years,” said Popp. “This is largely due to the
work of an increased number of volunteers
and professional botanists who are allowing
us to search more areas of Vermont than in
the past.”
Vermont Bear Hunting Starts in September
The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department
says bear hunting season starts in September
and reminds hunters about the bear hunting
regulations that went into effect last year.
Vermont has two bear hunting seasons.
The early season, which requires a special
bear tag, starts September 1 and continues
through November 15 with one exception.
Nonresident hunters using dogs cannot start
bear hunting until September 15. The late
bear season begins November 16 and continues
through November 24. A hunter may
only take one bear during the year.
In addition to a hunting license, a bear
hunter using a bow or crossbow must have a
prior or current bow license or a certificate
proving completion of a bow hunter education
course.
The hunter must field dress the bear
before taking it to a reporting station. It is
also legal to skin the bear and cut it up in
order to carry it out of the woods. Although
the bear must be reported within 48 hours,
Fish & Wildlife urges doing so quickly to
cool the meat. The hunter must also collect
and submit a pre-molar tooth from the bear
at the time the bear is reported. The tooth
provides important data on the age structure
and size of the bear population.
Upon the request of a game warden, a
person harvesting a bear is required to return
to the kill site with a game warden.
“Bears will be feeding along power lines
and in forest openings and old fields where
Kingdom. (Courtesy of Art Gilman.)
berries and apples can be found as well as in
forested beech and oak stands,” said
Vermont’s bear biologist Forrest Hammond.
They also are likely to be feeding on standing
corn.”
Hammond says Vermont’s regulated bear
hunting seasons help in managing the state’s
population which has grown in recent years.
“Fifty years ago Vermont had less than
1,500 bears, and they were found mostly in
the mountains and northeastern quarter of
the state,” he said. “Although we have successfully
increased bear numbers to about
5,000, the human population has also risen,
resulting in more encounters between
humans and bears. Carefully regulated hunting
helps control the growth of the black
bear population and allows for their sustainable
use, while decreasing interactions with
humans.”
Hammond says with bears being so abundant,
this is a great opportunity for hunters
who have never hunted bear to do so this
year. He says properly prepared bear meat is
highly nutritious and that recipes are readily
available on the Internet. A 2019 Black Bear
Hunting Season Guide is available on the
Vermont Fish & Wildlife website.
Hammond recommends that hunters
refrain from shooting a bear with cubs, and
he also asks hunters in southern Vermont to
avoid shooting bears with yellow ear tags
and GPS collars because they are valuable
animals in the Deerfield Wind bear study.
also explains that the deal Ford, Honda, Volkswagen, and BMW
In the second, BNEF concluded that the rapid price drops in
the cost of batteries that have driven the energy storage and EV
revolutions this decade will continue for the next decade.
In short, while Trump can slow adoption of high-efficiency EVs
in the United States, other countries — the E.U. and especially
China — will simply keep adopting them so quickly that he cannot
stop the global EV revolution.
Trump’s pro-oil moves ensure only that U.S. companies and
workers are far less likely to be the major beneficiaries of this massive
job-creating revolution.
Vermont Weather Trends – Rest of August into the first half of
September…
Temperatures were projected to be going above normal beginning
around 18th or 19th of the month, and lasting well into the
month of September. This return from a cooler period, associated
with a northwest flow of air from Canada and the most recent
slight cool-off, will mean summer-like warmth is far from done.
Late summer/early fall temperatures typically this time of year
can range considerably from some early modified arctic air to
bristling heat humidity and the odd ball tropical cyclone system
loaded with moisture. So far September, looks like more of “tackon”
to warmer summer weather per latest model guidance and the
“teleconnection” of large scale weather features.
During this rest of August cooler chilly air should become more
confined to the northern Plains and northern Rockies up into
Alaska while we heat up from the Dessert Southwest into Ontario,
Quebec and even the Canadian Maritimes. Interestingly, the peak
of this warm temperature anomaly maxes out in mid-September.
Thus Fall color at least going into late September should likely be
muted, with the peak turning of leaves becoming more pushed
back into mid-October, which seasonal model guidance also advertises
as warmer than normal.
How to store firewood the right way
A
fi replace is a cozy and warm spot
around which a family can gather.
The home and real estate resource
HomeGuides.com indicates that 60
percent of new homes have a fireplace, which
is up from 36 percent in the 1970s.
Naturally, fueling a fireplace for the season may require
homeowners with wood-burning units to keep an ample
supply of wood at the ready. How that wood is stored is
important, as properly stored firewood can prevent waste
and other issues around the house.
Wood that is freshly cut has a water content of 60 percent
or more. Yet, for best burning ability, wood should be near
20 percent in water content. Green wood is hard to ignite
and will not burn nearly as well or efficiently as seasoned
wood. Another concern associated with green wood is that
it can contribute more to creosote accumulation in the flue
of a fireplace. Creosote is a combustible material that may
lead to fires if left unchecked.
According to BioAdvanced®, a science-based lawn, garden
and home improvement innovator, seasoning wood typically
takes six months to a year. Homeowners may opt to
purchase seasoned wood that already has sat and dried.
Homeowners who have an abundance of firewood have to
store it somewhere. Log Splitters Direct suggests choosing
a dry, breezy area of the property that is about 20 feet from
the nearest door to the house. This helps avoid hitchhiker
pests from coming inside with the wood, such as termites,
ants, spiders, and mice. Do not stack the wood flush against
a structure. It should be at least a few inches away to allow
airflow behind the stack.
Stick to organized rows of wood no more than four feet
high. Log racks and pallets and posts will keep the wood
up and off of the ground where moisture and rotting can
develop. Placing the logs in an unorganized pile will impede
air flow and cause the wood to rot rather than continue to
dry and season even more.
Homeowners also should use a cover to protect seasoned
firewood from the elements. Position a tarp or plastic
sheeting so it blankets the top of the stack and extends a
few inches down the sides. Keep the sides mostly exposed
to air. Others prefer to stack it in a barn or shed or under an
overhang.
Green wood is less expensive than seasoned wood. Those
who prefer this method should do so in the early spring and
let it season over the next several months.
Bankrate says that the cost of a cord of wood varies
across the country, but in general one can expect to pay
between $120 and $180 for a cord of hardwood that is split
and seasoned. This price may be higher in mid-winter when
demand increases.
Slime Molds
By Ann Hazelrigg
Extension Plant Pathologist
University of Vermont Plant
Diagnostic Clinic
Have you ever noticed
something bright yellow or
orange on your bark mulch
after a rain? You may notice
that this blob actually has
moved across the mulch over
the course of a few days!
This is a unique organism
called a slime mold. Slime
molds are no longer classified
as fungi, but instead as a
member of the Kingdom
Protista (Protoctista). Slime
molds are not harmful to
adults or animals, and you
can break them up with a
rake if desired.
There are hundreds of different slime
molds with a range of colors and forms, but
the bright yellow one we see after rainy
weather is in a group called the ‘plasmodial’
slime molds. This blob or plasmodium,
often mistaken for dog vomit, consists of
one giant cell that can actually move across
the mulch, albeit very slowly.
As it moves, it ingests bacteria and fungi,
growing up to a foot or more in diameter. If
the weather stays favorable and there is
plenty to ingest, the slime mold will produce
a reproductive structure that is stalked
and filled with spores. As it breaks apart and
dries, the spores are released.
The thick-walled spores are resistant to
adverse conditions and can remain dormant
for several years. Once the environmental
conditions are just right, the spores germinate
and produce a new slime mold.
Another major group of slime molds is
the ‘cellular’ slime molds. These are singlecelled
organisms, each with its own nucleus.
The cells move through the environment at
about one millimeter per hour, ingesting
food as they go. When conditions are favorable,
these cells aggregate and form a ‘pseudoplasmodium’
or fake plasmodium.
Scientists have figured out that the individual
slime cells release a complex system of
chemical trails, and aggregation occurs as a
result of each cell detecting these chemical
signals. Research has shown slime molds can
figure out mazes due to these chemical trails.
Another group of scientists placed food
sources on a map of the major cities of Japan
and introduced a slime mold. The organism
branched out in several pathways to find the
food, and then died away on the routes that
were not as direct.
This resulted in the living slime mold following
the shortest most efficient path to the
food. The researchers also found these slime
mold pathways mimicked the same routes
the Japanese railway system used to design
the most efficient route between cities.
The Impact of Garden Edging
By Bonnie Kirn Donahue
Extension Master Gardener
University of Vermont
Ever wonder how you can achieve a more
professional looking flower garden? One
simple way to have a more visually appealing
garden is not about plants at all. It is about
the edge of your garden.
The primary purpose of edging along a
garden is to prevent lawn or other surfaces
from creeping into the bed. A clean edge also
can enhance the appearance of the garden by
differentiating the ground from the textures,
colors and forms of the garden plantings.
Whether curved or straight, the most
important thing is to make sure that the edging
looks consistent, intentional and flows
together. The human eye can easily pick up
even slight imperfections along an edge.
When laying out a straight edge, make
sure that your line doesn’t wiggle and your
corners are squared. With curved edging, try
to make longer, gentle curves instead of
many small scalloped ones. Compared to
smaller curves, larger, flowing, alternating
concave and convex curves are more pleasing
to the eye and easier to maintain.
The material that you select for garden
edging can be natural or permanent. A natural
edge costs less to install, but requires
more frequent maintenance, while a permanent
material edge has higher upfront costs
but will last for a long time. Either way, garden
edges require periodic maintenance
(i.e., weeding, weed whacking or re-edging)
to keep the boundary of your garden looking
neat and tidy.
A simple way to keep the grass from growing
into flowerbeds is to use a tool called a
garden edger. It looks like an ineffective
shovel as the head is small, mostly flat and
shaped like a half-moon.
Unlike a shovel, this tool cuts a clean line
in the sod, which can provide an instant
visual improvement to a garden. You place
the edger head in the lawn where you want
to cut an edge, and step on it firmly, lightly
lifting to gently loosen the soil.
You can use a garden hose as a guide to
trace your edging to help lay out the line.
After the lines are cut go back in and remove
the slices of sod, which leaves a small threeto
four-inch deep trench.
After you complete the edging, taper the
mulch from your garden bed up to the edge
of the lawn. Keeping the mulch below the
surface of the lawn will help to prevent it
from creeping back in too soon.
There are many permanent ways to establish
a garden edge. You can choose from
stonewalls, bricks, concrete pavers, natural
stones, stone aggregate, metal edging, plastic
edging and even wood edging.
The material that you choose will have a
significant impact on how straight or curved
the final edge will look. With plastic edging,
for example, it can be difficult to get a truly
straight or curved line without looking wobbly.
You can get creative about how you edge
your garden, but keep in mind that consistency
and simplicity are important. Try to
select one material for all of the edging on
your property.
Check out your local landscaping or hardware
store to see what options are available
near you, or take a walk around your neighborhood
and look at other gardens for inspiration.
