Message from the chairman Dear PDTE Members Firstly I’d like to wish you all a very happy, healthy and successful 2013. I often wonder what our dogs think when we have different holidays, suddenly our normal routines change, in some cases people get stressed and generally dogs can be left feeling a little out of sorts with all the changes that go on. My dogs and I all had a lovely time over the Christmas period but I am really happy to be getting back into a fairly normal routine, my dogs having had so much attention, fun and activity seem to be having post holiday-itis!! There are a great many lovely things happening this year; Turid’s symposium in February that I’m really looking forward to, flight and hotel booked just my bag to pack. We have a new website courtesy of Nelis our Membership Secretary. Nelis and his company Calming Signs has gifted to the PDTE a new website (PDTE.eu) which is incredibly generous – thank you so much Nelis. Nelis will also be hosting the AGM this year in Holland, it will be well worth the trip. The Board is undergoing some changes; Raili has resigned her position on the Board after 5 years, she has done a huge amount for the PDTE and she will be greatly missed, on behalf of the PDTE I’d like to thank Raili for all the hard work and dedication that she’s shown. We also are saying goodbye to Adelaide our Board Assistant for the time-being and again she has done so much for us, thank you both. I am really pleased to see so many PDTE members being so active in educating; running courses, workshops and seminars – really important work and it’s only by educating people that we will be able to see an end to the punishing, cruel and inhumane methods that are too often used in dog training. On YouTube there are some incredibly distressing videos of trainers showing violent and appalling so called ‘training’ techniques when really it’s abuse and bullying, it’s not just the internet but sadly we see appalling and ignorant techniques employed by so called professionals on the television too. The PDTE ethics are clear, we will never endorse or agree with any hitting, bullying, kicking, yanking methods that create fear, pain, confusion and distress. Our aim is to educate and promote kind and humane treatment of dogs everywhere. Soon the days will be getting longer. Wishing you all a fabulous 2013 and I look forward to seeing you at some of the wonderful events coming up. Welcome new our members ITALY Valentina Biedi My name is Valentina Biedi; I live in Genoa with my two dogs, Winnte and Diego, a pit bull female of about 7 years old and a 4-year-old male Lab cross. I have been a volunteer at the shelter in Genoa for about 10 years and have worked as a dog trainer for 5 years. I have attended different courses, but I can say that the course that really changed me and my way of relating to dogs was the lnternational Dog Trainer education that I attended in Clivio in 2009/2010 with Turid Rugaas and Anne-Lill Kvam. Everything began in 2008 when I attended a nosework course with Anne-Lill: at that time I was looking for something different; I didn’t feel comfortable with training the training techniques I had seen until then. But with Anne- Lill and Turid I finally found what I was looking for. The important thing isn’t doing things, training so much or expecting many things from our dogs. The important thing is to understand each other and to enjoy just being together. I love nosework activities with my dogs, in particular scent discrimination and tracking. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been more than fond of animals, but as a kid I was only allowed to own cats. Only as an adult have I been able to adopt dogs. In 2001-2 I started to study dog behaviour at the SCIVAC Italian Companion Animal Veterinary Association, on their first italian dog-training course. After this initial year-long course, I kept attending courses and seminars held by Roberto Marchesini, Gudrun Feltmann v.Shroeder, Clarissa v. Reinhard, Sheila Harper, Anne-Lill Kvam and others. It’s my strong opinion that, in order to be a good teacher, one must be a good student. Meeting Turid Rugaas has been enlightening! After attending her first Italian camp (Rome 2002) I realised she was my mentor. Her clear, uncompromising message has found in me a strong follower: gentle training and education, based on positive association, are actually in perfect harmony with my way of living my relationship with dogs. Therefore, in 2006-7 I followed and successfully graduated from the dog training course she and Anne-Lill Kvam held in Clivio (Varese-Italy). I continually update myself about the subject, reading articles/books and attending new courses. I have worked with dogs since 2002, holding both private and group classes, with a particular interest in puppies and nose-work. A holistic approach and the deep respect I have for animals mark my way of living and working with them. Sonia Sembenotti Daniela Cardillo My name is Daniela Cardillo; I have a degree in Dog Training from the University of Pisa (Italy). I started working with dogs as a dog sitter in 1991, and after many years I became a professional dog trainer. Always in love with animals in general, my mission is to help people build a correct relationship with their dogs, especially puppies and dogs with various problem behaviours. Clicker trainer CAP2 (studied in UK under Kay Laurence) and other positive methods are the way I teach both owners and other dog trainers. I believe so much in positive reinforcement that I became a member of the worldwide team of specialists working with Victoria Stilwell. The name of the team is VSPDT (Victoria Stilwell Positively Dog Training). I absolutely avoid and am against cruel submission-oriented or direct-confrontational methods; they lead both dogs and owners on the wrong path for teaching: fear and distrust. I think that the correct way of teaching anything to a dog starts from a good interspecies understanding. 5
