You are at Foxcroft because we believe that you
have all of the good stuff inside you. We see your
potential and we know that you have a big heart.
You care about living your best life, you have a
desire to learn from others, you want lasting
friendships, and you want to do your part to make
the world a better place. At Foxcroft, we rally together
behind our shared school values — respect,
integrity, kindness, and service. Striving to be our
best selves means just that — we are striving. We
are not perfect. Perfection is boring. What we do,
though, is take this time together to wonder, to
learn, to express, to collaborate, and even to
forgive. As you strive to turn your values into action,
ask yourself: What do I believe? How can I learn?
What can I try new or differently? How can I
improve? Who can I thank? Who needs my help?
Taking the time to know and appreciate your own
inner goodness and then sharing it with others is
what living “the good life” is all about.
“Outward Peace is
useless without
inner Peace.”
- Mahatma Ghandi
Look Inside: Clean Hearts
Martin Seligman, one of the co-founders of positive psychology
developed “PERMA,” five core elements that help us flourish:
1 Positivity and optimism - seeing the good in things, the growth
opportunities, and the silver linings
2 Engagement - losing track of time doing something you love
3 Relationships - nurturing relationships with family, friends, and peers
4 Meaning - contemplating what gives your life meaning and purpose
5 Accomplishment - set goals, pursue them, and celebrate your
achievements
Did you know that curiosity is good for you? Studies
show that being curious about our world helps us to
survive! Curiosity makes us happier — exploring new
things releases endorphins and dopamine. Being
curious helps us to develop lasting relationships —
learning about what others think and feel, how they
live, what they believe, and what motivates them
helps us to nurture connections and meaningful
relationships. We become better listeners, more
empathetic, and more open. Curiosity also cultivates
positive collaboration and even boosts our
academic and work performance! We want to
explore, seek greater understanding, exchange
ideas, and solve problems.
“When you become
confident with your
inner self, the outside’s
just going to fall into
place.”
Get Outside: Jump in with Both Feet!
Did you know that all people have the same four universal
needs?
1 To be loved
2 To be heard
3 To achieve
4 To be appreciated
If we each have these needs, how can we help others to feel known and
valued? How can we show care and concern? To listen? To support and
celebrate accomplishments and our pursuits? How can we express
gratitude to others who support us?
We are busy people and much is asked of us. In
the busyness of life, it’s easy to become confused,
disoriented, and to feel a bit off-kilter. Slowing
down and unplugging -breathing- helps us to
check in, settle down, and re-center.
You don’t need permission to breathe and to
process everything you have been taking in. Be
gentle with yourself because you are busy. You are
learning. You are striving. Being present in the
moment helps put life - your goals, your values, your
needs — into perspective. Take some time to hang
out in that space between your thoughts and
emotions. Listen to your inner voice, have
confidence in your abilities, trust your gut. You
have what it takes to get through life’s challenges.
34
“Don’t let the noise of
others’ opinions drown
out your inner voice.”
- Steve Jobs
Just Breathe
How do you find breathing room? Consider:
1 Creative outlets - playing music, drawing, painting, taking photos.
Maybe you like to make things with your hands.
2 Physical outlets - move your body! Go for a hike or run. Ride your bike
or your horse. Maybe you could walk a campus dog, invite friends to
play a sport or a game, do yoga, or climb to the top of the gazebo!
3 Meditative outlets (journal, prayer, reading, mindfulness) - take time
to contemplate and consider new ideas. Maybe you could write a thank
you note to express your gratitude. Go for a quiet walk in the evening,
maybe stargaze in Big Track. Curl up in a nook in the library to read poetry
or get lost in a delicious novel. You could write in your journal, doodle
on a blank piece of paper, or simply sit in Miss Charlotte’s Garden to
observe nature at work.
December is often synonymous with busy. Family
and community obligations and traditions, projects
and exams, cleaning and packing, shopping and
wrapping. Much to do and too little time in which to
do it. The beautiful gift in this busy season though is
knowing that reaching outside of ourselves to give
— the random or simple acts of kindness — is the
ultimate antidote to stress and frenzy.
“These mountains that
you are carrying, you
were only supposed to
climb.”
- Najwa Zebian
Reach Out and Give Back
Compassion and giving to others has all kinds of benefits, fosters a
sense of community and belonging, and releases endorphins which help
to relieve pain and stress.
Service can help us put life into perspective and to see and appreciate
our own blessings, increasing our gratitude and boosting our happiness
and well-being.
We talk a lot about finding balance — between
home and school, between work and play, between
time spent surrounded by concrete and time spent
in nature. At the core of this, though, is a simple
need to find joy in our lives. Have you ever noticed
that friend stress can mess with your focus in class?
Or that a rough school day can’t fully throw you
off when you’re in a really great mood? When you
bring positive affect — aka a good mood — to your
work, you are more likely to solve problems well, to
be creative and insightful, and to be less bothered
by stumbling blocks. We challenge you this month
to tend to yourself. Set some intentions for your
downtime in 2020, and find some healthy joy
outside of class. You just might discover some of
that sought-after balance, too.
“Life is like riding a
bicycle. To keep balance,
you must keep moving.”
- Albert Einstein
When you hear the word, ocean, what do you
imagine? Warm or cool water? Huge or small waves?
Cliffs or flat coast? Sand or rocky shores? We likely
all see and hear different things, shaped by our own
experiences. Having an understanding heart means
recognizing - even celebrating - that we have these
differences in perspective, and building empathy
from that understanding. Your challenge this month
is to consider the perspectives of others around you
and to infuse your interactions with kindness and respect.
Let your understanding heart be your guide.
“Kindness is like snow.
It beautifies everything
it covers.”
- Kahlil Gibran
Playtime. We so often think of this as something
reserved for little kids — the unstructured, joyful, silly
time of early childhood. You know, before organized
sports, music lessons, and that whole school thing
took over all of our time. But playtime isn’t just for
littles. It might look different as we age, but every
single one of us — from newborn to centenarian —
needs to play. So what does this play look like? It
could be physical, like outdoor games. It could be
mental, like trading jokes with friends. It could be
anything, as long as it brings you joy, and has
little to do with your work. Playtime helps us blow
off steam, bond with others, sharpen our minds,
and adds interest to our lives. And of course, it’s fun.
So go ahead, get silly, get outside, and go play!
“And at the end of the
day, your feet should be
dirty, your hair messy
and your eyes sparklng.”
- Shanti
It is that time of the year when girls begin to
consider how they want to serve their community
— what do you have to offer? What do you want to
contribute? What have you learned? What are your
hopes? When you decide to run for an office or to
apply for a leadership position, it is an opportunity
for you to give voice to your values, to share stories
about your experience and to plant seeds for how
we can all engage in our community in positive and
meaningful ways. No matter if you win the election
Live Out Loud: Speak Your Truth
Questions to consider for exploring your leadership:
1 What kind of impact do I want to make in my school community?
2 Which activities do I most enjoy?
3 What are my strengths? Opportunities for growth?
4 What role suits me best?
Do I understand the expectations of the role?
Do I have the skills for this role?
Does this role play to my strengths?
Am I able to commit the time to meet expectations?
How can I help my community and what can I learn by serving
in this role?
Imagine a world where everything stays the same,
day in and day out, year upon year. There is no
change, there is no growth. Sounds pretty safe…and
pretty boring, right? Change adds spice to life, but
more importantly, it teaches us that we’re capable of
adapting; of rising above our usual selves to become
stronger people. That rising above part? That takes
guts. It takes courage to move beyond our comfort
zones, to become resilient rather than hide behind
fear. When we do this, we often realize that change
can be liberating, it often makes us grateful for what
we have, it brings new perspectives to our awareness,
and above all else, it makes our lives full. We
challenge you this month — and this summer — to
embrace the changes inevitably brought by the end
of the school year. Be strong. Be resilient. Be gutsy!
“For whatever it’s worth, it’s
never too late to be who you
want to be. I hope you live
a life you’re proud of, and
if you find that you’re not, I
hope you have the strength
to start over.”
- F. Scott Fitzgerald
“Change is not only
inevitable, but always
happening. When you
truly embrace this
concept of change
being constant, the
only thing left to do is
grow, detach, venture
Inside Out
These activities are
here to nuture you
from the inside out
— how you tend
to matters of the
head, the hand and
the heart; looking
inward and stepping
out into the
larger world.
1 Map the Journey
Time: 20 minutes
Supplies: planner, calendar,
markers/pens, large sheet of
paper
Sit down with your students
and ask them to skim the
planner, taking a look at
themes, major events, times
of year, etc. After they have
looked through the book, ask
them to work together to use
the paper and markers to
create a map of the year. Be
sure to include events and how
they feel at different times of
the year (maybe find some
emojis to associate with each
major event).
Discuss: What have they noticed
about the big picture of
the year? What are the exciting
times? Overwhelming times?
Scary times? What resources
do they have to help them
along the way?
4 Anchor
Time: 15 minutes
Supplies: paper, pen or pencil
Draw an anchor in the middle
of a blank page.
On the top left, write down
those things you did when you
were little that made you feel
most at home, most yourself.
Take a look at your
anchor. Know that you will
find strength and support here.
Feel free to share your anchors
with your peers.
2 Scavenger Hunt
Time: 25 minutes
Supplies: phone (for photos),
scavenger hunt list, pen/pencil
to check things off the list.
People and spaces have shuffled
a bit around the summer.
Have your group of students
go on a scavenger hunt to
locate key locations, resources,
and people. They will need
to take a group photo with
the people or place. See how
many photos you can collect
with your team in the shortest
amount of time.
• Experiential Learning
Center
• Residential Life Office
• Counselor office
• Learning Center
• Director of Technology
• Director of Diversity &
Inclusion
• Health Center & New Nurse
• Assistant Athletic Director
• Library
• Innovation Lab
On the top right of the anchor,
write down those activities that
you enjoy doing today that
make you feel most at ease
and most like yourself.
On the bottom left, write a list
of those places, smells, or
experiences in nature that
make you feel most at home,
most yourself.
On the bottom right, write a list
of people where to go to feel
validated, inspired, and cared
for.
3 Hopes & Fears
Time: 20 minutes
Supplies: note cards (two
colors), pens/pencils, a “hat”
or “box” for gathering the note
cards
Each year brings its own set
of hopes, expectations,
challenges, uncertainties,
or worries. This group project
helps to build trust within your
group while creating a safe
place for them to talk about
their hopes and fears.
Come to this activity with
compassion and seriousness.
Create a “circle of trust” with
your group, knowing that what
is shared will not leave your
group.
Take a few notecards (one
color for writing your hopes
and the other color for writing
your fears). Take about five
minutes to write down your
hopes and fears (one per card)
for the year. You should not put
names on the cards. When you
are finished, add your cards to
the box.
Once all of the cards are
collected, take turns pulling
the cards randomly out of the
hat and reading them aloud.
Talk through how understanding
these hopes and
fears helps you to support one
another. How will you work on
goal setting, supporting,
encouraging, and celebrating?
5 I am Poem
Time: 20 minutes
Supplies: paper, pen or pencil
Write down each of the following
words or phrases on
a blank page, allowing one
phrase per line. When finished,
take 10 minutes to fill in the
blank.
I am ___________
I wonder ________
I feel _________
I create _________
I am __________
I crave _________
I despise _________
I struggle _________
I am _____________
I worry __________
I love ____________
I hope ___________
Take time to share your I Am
poems in your group and reflect
on them together.
120
6 North/South Pole
Time: 20 minutes
Supplies: masking tape
Arrange your group in a line
shoulder-to-shoulder on a log,
low wall, or on a line of masking
tape. Once there,
give them the instructions
to arrange themselves in the
following spectrums without
stepping (too far) off their line:
• From oldest to youngest
• Most thinking to most
feeling.
• Most outdoorsy to most
indoorsy
• Lover to fighter
• Grounded to dreamer
• From most extroverted to
most introverted (do you
recharge by being with
people or by having alone
time?)
• From most relationship
oriented to most task
oriented (when you get
to work/class, do you first
want to check in with your
fellows or come up with a
to-do list?)
9 Original Art
Time: 15-20 minutes
Supplies: paper and pen or
pencil
Each person will draw this
shape on their page.
7 Ephemeral Art
Time: 15-20 minutes
Supplies: the outdoors!
Ephemeral art is art that only
last for a short amount of time.
Take your group outside and
spend five minutes collecting
interesting natural materials.
Come together and create a
work of art in the grass. Leave
it for others to enjoy until it
blows away.
8 Two Truths & a Lie
Time: 20 minutes
Supplies: just people and good
listening skills!
Each person in your group will
take turns sharing two facts
about themselves and one lie.
The group will listen and try to
guess which statements are
facts and which one is the lie.
After replicating the shape,
take about five to seven minutes
to complete the drawing.
Compare their drawing to
others. Consider: what do
their shapes have in common?
What inspired them? What
makes their individual drawings
unique? What can this
tell us about living in our
community?
10Sit, Watch, & Write
Time: 10 minutes
Supplies: paper, writing utensil
Go outside and choose a spot
to sit down. Look around you.
What do you see? People?
Colors? Animals? Write down
what you see.
Share what you saw with your
group. Did you see the same
things? Different things?
11 Color & Chill
Time: 15 minutes
Supplies: coloring books, crayons,
colored pencils or markers
Find a comfortable spot, listen
to music, and sit quietly to
color as a group or alone.
13Roses/Thorns/Buds
Time: 15-20 minutes
Supplies: you!
As you reflect on the first half of
the year, think about your roses
(those highlights, beautiful
moments, goals accomplished,
etc.), thorns (disappointments,
hurts, failures), and buds (hopes
for the horizon, new goals or
interests).
Take turns in your group sharing.
14 Human Sculpture
Time: 20 minutes
Supplies: you!
In a small group (minimum of
three people) reflect on your
year so far. What have been
the stand-out moments?
Now, using just your bodies,
create a sculpture that
symbolizes the year so far
for your group. At least one
of your group members must
be completely off the ground.
Make sure to take a picture!
12 Blow Off Steam
Time: as long or short as you
would like
Supplies: you!
Go outside, look up at the sky,
and on the count of three,
scream as loudly as you can.
Supplies: Balloons
Blow up a balloon, do not tie it
off and then let it go.
Supplies: Bubbles
Blow bubbles and try to catch
them before they hit the floor
Supplies: Balloons & String
Partner up. Each person blows
up a balloon and ties it to their
ankle with a piece of string. Try
to pop your partner’s balloon
before they pop yours!
121
15 Bridge
Time: 15 minutes
Supplies: paper, colored
pencils or crayons or markers
The week before or after a
break can sometimes feel a
little bumpy or disorienting.
With significant school activities,
events, projects, and
packing or unpacking, there is
a lot to think about and much
to do! Take a few minutes to
reflect and think of this transition
week as a bridge between
Foxcroft and home (or wherever
the break took you).
What does your bridge look
like (an ancient stone bridge,
a well-worn trail, a hanging
bridge or tight rope?)
What are you leaving behind?
What opportunities await you
on the other side?
What are the “trolls” under the
bridge that are the obstacles
you must negotiate for a safe
journey?
What are the things that will
help you navigate this week
successfully?
Now, draw your bridge! Be as
creative and imaginative as
you would like to be.
16 Spread Kindness
Time: 20 minutes
Supplies: whatever you have!
Work together as a group to
find one small thing you can
do to spread kindness in the
community. Maybe it is a thank
you note, compliments spread
all over campus, helping to
push in the chairs after lunch,
giving shout-outs to someone
in the community at the next
three Morning Meetings.
Maybe you want to volunteer
in the community together.
Babysit for free. Walk a campus
dog. You decide! Just commit
to it!
18 Rock or Feather?
Time: 15-20 minutes
Supplies: you!
Which are you more like?
Take turns going around
the room with your group
deciding what you are more
like. You must choose one.
Be prepared to explain.
17 Affirmations
Time: 15-20 minutes
Supplies: paper, tape, and
colored pencils, crayons, or
water-soluble markers
Each student will be given a
piece of paper that will be
taped to her back. Members
of the group will walk around
and write affirmations —
compliments, gratitudes,
words of support and
encouragement — on each
other’s paper.
Enjoy the kindness you just
spread!
• Rock or Feather?
• River or Lake?
• Rock band or string quartet?
• Drama or Comedy?
• YouTube or Podcast?
• Gate or Wall?
• Lemon or Grape?
• Marathon or Sprint?
19 FXC Fish Bowl
Time: as long as you want
Supplies: a bowl, small slips of
paper
Take two minutes and have
each person in the group write
down as many Foxcroft things
as they can think of on the slips
of paper — it could be events,
traditions, places, people, etc.
One thing per slip! Fold up all
the slips and throw them in the
bowl.
Divide your group into even
teams (preferably more than
two people per team). You will
play three rounds, and each
team will have one minute per
round.
When it is your team’s turn,
one member from your team
will grab a piece of paper from
the bowl, and that one person
will describe what is on it to
her teammates. They will try to
guess. Each team should try to
name as many Foxcroft things
as possible within that one
minute. Each team is permitted
one pass per round.
Round 1: Use as many words as
possible to describe the person/place/thing
on the slip of
paper without using the word
on the paper.
Round 2: Use one word only
to describe the person/place/
thing on the paper.
Round 3: No words allowed.
You may gesture or act out the
person/place or thing.
20Childhood Games
Time: varies
Supplies: your wits
Simon Says, Redlight Greenlight,
Hokey Pokey, Who’s Got My
Chicken, Freeze Tag, TV Tag,
Clapping Games?
Talk to your group about your
favorite games, then play!
22 Spin a Yarn
Time: 20 minutes
Supplies: paper
Write down your three
strongest childhood memories.
Now, cross two off your list.
Next, write for five minutes
about that experience. Where
were you, how old were you,
what was the weather like,
who else was with you, what
happened, what did you see,
hear, smell, taste?
When five minutes is up, share
your story. How did this experience
shape you, teach you,
define you? How will this
experience guide you as you
get older?
23 Hands Down
Time: 15 minutes
Supplies: color pencils, crayons,
or markers and paper.
Trace both your hands on a
piece of paper. Inside one
hand write and draw how you
see yourself. In the other hand
write and draw how you think
others see you.
21 Footsteps
Time: 20 minutes
Supplies: paper and pen
Trace your foot on a piece
of paper. For the next five
minutes, free-write inside
your footprint. Write whatever
comes to your mind first, telling
the story of your footsteps —
where are you going, who are
you following, who is following
you, what about it are you
grateful for, what has it been
through, what has it gotten
you through, how do you know
yourself through what your
foot has experienced?
Share your stories.
24 Risk Failure
Time: 15-20 minutes
Supplies: camera, paper, pen
or marker
If you could do anything knowing
that you could not fail, what
would you do? Maybe you
would skydive, start your own
company, join the Marines,
sleep in a tree hammock. Anything
that would make you feel
strong, free, or successful.
Now, take your piece of paper.
Hold it horizontally. Write that
one thing down in large letters
across the center of paper.
Have your group leader take a
photo of you holding it in front
of you.
Share with your group what you
would do and why? Consider:
What if you never tried? What if
you failed? Could you live with
that?
Mission
To help every girl explore her unique voice and to develop the
skills, confidence, and courage to share it with the world.
Values
Respect
Integrity
Kindness
Service
Honor Code
Foxcroft is a community built on trust. A Foxcroft girl is respectful of others and their property,
dedicates herself to her academic pursuits, and models the School’s expectations both on and off
school grounds. Every student in the Foxcroft community is expected to be honest in her academic
work and in her interactions with members of the community. Lying, cheating, or stealing,
including plagiarism and the use of any false identities, violates our honor code, is considered
prohibited conduct, and will result in disciplinary action. Each year, our community members attend
an Honor Assembly to sign the Honor Code, and actively participate in Honor Code
discussions and activities about honor and academic integrity.
Honor Pledge
The Honor Pledge serves as a regular reminder to all members of the community that we have
a shared responsibility to act with academic integrity in all of our work. Teachers will ask students
to sign the pledge on a range of assignments, from tests and quizzes to essays and group
projects. Expectations will be made clear to students in each faculty member’s course syllabus,
assignment descriptions, and class announcements.
I pledge that all work is my own, but any help I received is documented and in
accordance with the expectations of my teacher.
School Prayer
Note: It is tradition at Foxcroft to say together the School prayer at events such as Convocation
and Commencement and at Morning Meetings. At Foxcroft, we have students of many faith
traditions and we honor and respect each girl’s beliefs. This prayer has its roots in the Christian
faith, but today we say it as a reminder of how we want to treat one another and how we want to
live in community together. It is a promise to one another.
O God, grant to this School and Thy servants in it Thy holy protection for the ensuing day. Give us
strength to resist temptations, to be honest and upright and to be faithful and loyal friends to all
about us. Give us a cheerful spirit in our work and in our play. Grant us a clear vision and clean
hearts and the grace to perform our daily tasks in Thy service, that we may go forth from our
School in the light of Thy love, living always as Thy true children. Amen.
School Song: Here’s to the School
Here’s to the School
And the spelling book and rule
And here’s to Miss Charlotte whom we follow;
And here’s to their health
And their happiness and wealth;
And here’s to the whoop and the hallo.
So sing girls sing
And let every girl sing
Who’s old enough to lead and to follow.
For every girl that’s here
Has a memory near and dear
For the School and its whoop and its hallo.
Here’s to the horse
And the basketball, of course
and here’s to the rally of the hunt girls;
And here’s to being friends
’Til life is through and ends
And here’s to Foxcroft in the front, girls.
So sing girls sing
And let every girl sing
Who’s old enough to lead and to follow.
For every girl that’s here
Has a memory near and dear
For the School and its whoop and its hallo.
Our hearts are staunch and true
And no matter what we do
We’ll always have a life in old Virginia;
So pass the word along
Come join us in our song
And sing to Foxcroft in Virginia.
So sing girls sing
And let every girl sing
Who’s old enough to lead and to follow.
For every girl that’s here
Has a memory near and dear
For the School and its whoop and its hallo.
