twenty-year-old Norwegian
holidaymaker in Benidorm,
has criticised the treatment
of his client.
Fabrice David, representing
a client known as Hugo, speaking
to the Spanish News Agency,
Efe last week, complained
that the young men had been,
“exposed as true criminals”,
before all available evidence
had been examined.
He also revealed that his
client, called the encounter, a
“spoiled” relationship, claiming
and insists that they only took
part in sexual relations alone
in a room in the apartment he
shared with his four friends, all
aged either 18 or 19.
According to the lawyer,
Hugo’s defence will focus on
the behaviour of the young
woman who, according to mobile
phone evidence of conversations
they had in the Tinder
dating App, before she and her
friend visited the French boys
apartment. “These exchanges
characterize the notion of consent,”
explained David.
in that regard.”
The five Frenchmen were
arrested on the day before
they were due to leave their
accommodation last week.
The defendants gave a judicial
statement last Thursday,
where the judge issued prison
without bail for three of them
accused of an alleged crime of
sexual abuse.
They were transferred to
special security module for inmates
under 21 years of age at
the Villena prison after spending
the night in the premises
of the Guardia Civil Altea. Two
of the five detainees were released
without charge.
Food bank fraud
by Alex Trelinski
A PERUVIAN man has been arrested
by the National Police in
Torrevieja over the illegal sale
of food which was handed over
to an Alicante Province charity
that ran food banks for people
in need.
The charity has five outlets in
the region, with discrepancies
being noted over the amount
of food they should have, following
checks by official
inspectors.
Some of the food was being sold
off illegally, whilst some of it being
shipped to Morocco.
The arrested 49-year-old Peruvian
was tracked down to
Torrevieja last Friday, and is
believed to have orchestrated
the fraud.
A Peruvian woman was arrested
earlier in the National Police
operation, with two other people
being investigated.
New British voice
BRITAIN´S new ambassador
to Spain, Hugh Elliott,
takes up his posting on
Monday, replacing Simon
Manley, who has been the
UK´s representative in the
country since 2013.
Father-of-three Elliott has
been the Director of Communication
and Stakeholders
at the Department for
Exiting the European Union.
He has held several highlevel
posts in the Foreign
and Commonwealth Office
since 1989.
awaits his next posting
as he returned to London
this week.
In a farewell message
to British people living in
Spain, the now ex-ambassador
said: ‘I have left with a
wealth of wonderful memories
of this fantastic country,
and I understand why so
many UK nationals choose
to live and visit here.
“One of the tremendous
privileges of this job has
been to meet many of you,
the British Nationals involved
in your communities
in so many different ways
through organisations like
Cruz Roja and Age Concern,
and so many more.
“It has been an honour to
represent Queen and country
and to serve you, the UK
nationals living here. If I
have one final message as we
leave the EU, it is to make
sure you, your friends and
family are properly registered
as residents. And check
on your neighbours – make
sure they are registered too.”
Holiday baby shock
A BRITISH tourist has
been left with an unexpected
long stay on
the Costa Blanca, after
giving birth to her first
baby three months early
while on holiday.
Birmingham couple
Shannon Holbrook and
Matthew Beach travelled
to the Costa Blanca at the
beginning of July, but six
days after they arrived,
Shannon, who was 26
weeks pregnant, suddenly
went into labour.
She’s now been told
that her child, Scarlett-Rose,
who was
born weighing just two
by Alex Trelinski
pounds, cannot fly until
she is 35 weeks old, as per
health guidelines.
The couple had the good
sense to take out travel
insurance, so their medical
bills are covered, and
they also have a place
to stay - but it’s an hour
away from the San Juan
de Alicante hospital.
Shannon’s sister has
started a fund-raising internet
page to help meet
their costs as they have
stay in the area until baby
Scarlett-Rose is allowed
to travel.
Finance Feature
provided by...
What you should expect from
a good financial advisor?
REGULATION: Before your appointment
it is essential you check the
regulation of the firm you are speaking
to. Chorus make this as easy as possible
– our license numbers are listed on all
our articles, advertising, business cards,
email footers, and, via our website’s
‘Regulation’ tab, you can directly visit
our listings on the websites of the UK
FCA, the Gibraltar FSC and the Spanish
DGS and CNMV, and see details of all
our various licenses and permissions.
There should never be any confusion or
doubt as to how the firm you are speaking
to are regulated, and there is never
an excuse not to display this clearly on
all literature. If you can’t find license
numbers and verify them yourself,
simply walk away.
FEES: Your advisor should always tell
you very clearly how they are remunerated
and give you an exact breakdown of
all fees. Ensure you have the following
fees confirmed before signing anything:
1) The investment vehicle or ‘wrapper’,
for example a platform or
bond, will normally be structured
in one of two ways: No tie-in,
but a set-up fee payable to your
advisor, or an annual fee that is
tied-in for a set number of years.
You shouldn’t normally see both a
tie-in and a set-up fee, as this may
mean your advisor is trying to pay
themselves twice! If you are being
tied-in, always get a like-for-like
quote elsewhere before signing
any paperwork. At Chorus, to
make this as easy as possible, we
can even do this by email, and
promise to provide it within 24
hours.
2) An annual advisor fee – this
covers servicing and portfolio
management. At Chorus you
would not usually pay more than
0.75% for this, and the larger the
investment, the lower the fee.
3) The fees charged by each individual
fund in your portfolio – be
very weary of this fee. Fair annual
fees for the highest quality, FCA
regulated funds are between 0.2%
and 1.2% per annum, any more
than this should cause concern.
The reality is, as IFAs we need to win
your business – that means by giving
you the best proposal, out of say 2-3
firms you go to. You should NEVER
pay for an initial consultation, and
NEVER agree to pay any fees before
you have received a full written proposal
detailing the exact products being recommended,
their benefits, any tie-in, and
full list of all as previously mentioned
charges.
Imagine if you went to a shopping mall
here in Spain, and they charged you before
you could even enter the shop and
see the products and prices on offer!!
So, before you sign anything or agree
to pay any fees, ask for the total annual
% of your proposal to be confirmed in
writing (by email is fine – but again, are
those regulatory details in their email
footer??). Ensure the 3 charges detailed
in this article are included, along
with confirmation of the total annual
fee of the proposal, ie all charges
added together. There is no excuse for
not willingly providing this information
in a clear and easy to understand
way, and in my experience, when this
doesn’t happen, it may mean they are
trying to hide fees from you.
Ask for fact sheets for the underlying
investment funds – these should
clearly display annual charges, and
preferably a 10+ year track record.
I do often feel that as Brits we are too
afraid to offend, and this can really
cost us. Your entire financial future
is potentially at stake when you sign
up with an IFA. You might be sat in
an incredibly impressive office, with
a company that smacks of prestige
and reputation, but some of the most
notorious confidence tricksters in
history have done exactly that. Never
be afraid to ask questions, and never
fail to do your own due diligence, or
seek a second opinion, on any recommendation
being made to you. This
By Tracy Storer
is simply too important for you to take
any chances.
and you will only commit to fees once
all details are confirmed and you are
happy to move ahead with a proposal.
Opera star singing the blues
From sweating buckets to raining buckets
THE near record heatwave
across the Valencian
Community came to
a dramatic end earlier this
week after much of the
region was battered with
heavy rain, hailstorms and
strong winds.
The previous Friday the
inland mountain town of
Xativa had hit 44 degrees
while Valencia airport was
at 42 degrees, both among
the highest temperatures recorded
in the 150 years since
THE normally uncontroversial
world of opera is
in shock after probably
its greatest living star,
Spaniard Placido Domingo,
has been accused of
sexual harassment by
nine women.
The accusations date back
to the late 1980s and Domingo
has reacted to the claims
by saying that he “believed
all of my interactions and
relationships were always
welcomed and consensual.”
He also called the allegations
“deeply troubling and
inaccurate.”
Putting his hand down
women’s clothing, forced
kisses and unwanted fondling
are among the actions
he is supposed to have carried
out.
He is also said to have
made late night phone calls
and arranged clandestine
meetings to “further females
careers.”
The Associated Press led
the investigation and published
their findings this
week, with dozens of insiders
claiming that Domingo,
now aged 78, was notoriously
sexually inappropriate
with young women.
There is no word of any official
as they could remember.
At around 6pm on Monday
things, bringing in first the
cooler weather and then the
storms.
Although this caught
many by surprise, especially
the beach bound visitors,
there were no reports of serious
incidents although many
THE Ministry of Justice
has confirmed that Gandia
is one of the regional
towns that will be having
an extra courtroom, something
the town has been
requesting for a while as
a backlog of trials has
steadily built up.
The new facility is set to
be opened in November according
to a statement that
made during a visit to the
Size does matter...
In today’s complex world, with constant changes in tax legislation
limited resource to provide the infrastructure, research and analysis
Second time lucky?
by Alex Trelinski
SPAIN´S caretaker prime
minister has said that he
wants to restart talks with
rival political parties to try
to form a government after
failing on his first attempt.
PSOE Socialist party
leader Pedro Sánchez stated
that that he plans to meet
with the heads of other parties
“near the end of August
or in early September”
to persuade them to support
his formation of a new
“progressive” government.
Sánchez says that will include
the far-left Podemos,
which stopped his chance of
winning the endorsement of
Congress last month after
rejecting his offer to enter
into coalition government.
The PSOE were easily the
largest party after April´s
general election, but still fell
well short of getting an overall
majority.
The various parties have
until September 23rd to approve
a new government,
Pedro Sánchez
or else Spanish voters will
trundle off to the polls for the
fourth time in just over four
years in November.
Summer speed
campaign
THIS weekend (midnight
on Sunday) marks the end
of the General Directorate
de Traffico’s (DGT) latest
speed campaign, aimed
at reducing the high accident
and fatality rates
that regularly occur at this
time of the year.
This is due to a combination
of sheer volume of
traffic, people driving on
unfamiliar roads and the
by Simon Russell
usual factors such as alcohol,
drugs and speeding.
This Thursday (August
15) was a bank holiday
meaning many people will
have taken a four day break,
hitting the road on Thursday
and returning on Sunday.
There are also expected
to be more short journeys
on minor roads than usual
as many places have fiestas
planned, which will attract
out of town visitors. The
DGT campaign will include
extra controls with a particular
focus on speeding,
which was the second highest
cause of fatalities in the
same period last year.
Excessive speeding can
be punishable with jail
time, particularly in urban
areas.
Robber facing return
A 34-year-old man with a
European Arrest Warrant
against his name for violent
theft has been arrested in
the Valencian Community
this week.
He was due to spend 10
years in jail in Germany, but
skipped the country before
his sentence began.
He was tracked to Castellon
and this week National
Police approached him to
make the arrest.
The man lashed out at the
police and a struggle ensued,
meaning that he has also
been charged with assault
along with his 23 year old
companion.
The 34 year old is likely
by Simon Russell
to be extradited to Germany
to serve his prison sentence
while the younger man will
be charged with assault here
in Spain as he has no known
connection to the other crime.

Gotcha......Twice!
A DRUNK-DRIVER was
pulled up twice behind the
wheel within an hour by
the Guardia Civil in the Mar
Menor area of the Murcia
region last Saturday.
The hapless, yet unidentified
motorist, was stopped at
6.00pm on the A-30 heading
towards Cartagena, and was
found to be twice over the alcohol
limit.
His car was then parked
up at the Las Cumbres service
area, and rather than
waiting for the alcohol to get
out of his bloodstream, he
got behind the wheel.
The driver was stopped at
7.00pm on the RM-19 road
heading towards San Javier,
and in a routine Guardia
Civil stop, he was still found
to be over the limit, and was
charged again.
Stopped
again
by Alex Trelinski
The man faces a parade of
fines and licence points deductions
as well as a charge
of driving his car from the
service area, when told not
to do so.
Barcelona were fuelled
this week after two people
were stabbed in the city
on Monday night in unconnected
incidents.
One man was knifed in
the chest in the La Ribera
district and his condition is
said to be “very serious”. A
few hours later the emergency
services were once again
called out and a man was arrested
after another young
male was seriously hurt in a
knife attack in the Barceloneta
district.
Although there is no indication
that the victims were
tourists, both districts do attract
a lot of visitors. Earlier
this month two people died
in separate murders and
violent crime in the city has
risen dramatically over the
last 12 months. One concern
is that tourists are unknowingly
renting apartments
via websites such as AirBnb
that they may not realise are
in some of the less safe parts
of the city.
Good day
for four
trouble
by Simon Russell
AFTER fears that Denia
animal protection group
APAD would no longer be
asked to look after homeless
dogs in the care of
the town they have now
been granted the right to
continue their good work.
The decision came after
Castellon Seproanimal, who
had originally been chosen to
replace APAD, failed to submit
their paperwork to the town
hall by the deadline given.
It also follows on from a
protest by several hundred
people last week about the
proposed changes.
On their Facebook page
APAD thanked everyone
who had fought on their
behalf and said this was a
triumph for the animals affected
and the volunteers
and associations who give of
their time.
Cover up denied
AUTHORITIES in Barcelona
have confirmed that
women are allowed to
swim topless in councilrun
swimming pools.
The confirmation came
after complaints had been
received by Barcelona City
by Alex Trelinski
Council from protestors that
forcing women to cover up was
against the law in the Catalan
capital. Campaign group Mugrons
Lliures filed a complaint
regarding the inconsistencies
in rules around topless bathing
at certain pools.
The City Council investigated
and found that there were
some problems at some pools,
and have reminded all pools
and sports centres not to act
in a discriminatory manner.
CABIN CREW staff on flights
getting drunken abuse from
passengers, but there was
a fresh twist last weekend,
as an Easyjet cabin attendant
was arrested and escorted
off a plane at Newcastle
for allegedly being
drunk during the flight.
The captain of the Easyjet
flight alerted air traffic control
to land in the north-east of
England, and police carted off
Car is still king
by Simon Russell
DESPITE various initiatives
to encourage people
to walk, cycle or take public
transport the amount
of cars registered to Valencia
City residents increased
by 8,300 last year
compared to 2017.
The number now stands
at 445,287, something that
generates around €35 million
in tax for the city.
Greener vehicles such as
electric cars and some hybrids
are entitled to a 75%
tax reduction and new cars
that use unleaded fuel pay
30% less tax.
More electric vehicle
charging points are being installed
in the city, with three
more in the pipeline at a cost
of €200,000.
However despite these
efforts the fact remains
that when the economy
improves, one of the first
thing many people buy is a
car, often a second or even
third vehicle for a single
household.
Big response to
Green Flag campaign
OVER 200 Denia retailers
and hostelries are taking
part in the Valencian
Communities Green Flag
scheme, aimed at encouraging
recycling of glass
during the busy summer
months when usage is at
its highest.
Sponsored by Ecovidrio,
the non-profit organisation
who install and empty the
green “igloos” for glass recycling
that you see in towns
around here, initiatives include
training, awareness
by Simon Russell
and the use of extra bins in
key areas.
The top two municipalities
in the region will win
the flag with 41 taking part,
while success is based on the
amount of glass collected
compared to pre-campaign
levels.
The establishment judged
to have performed best will
also win a cookery masterclass
with Quique Dacosta,
the three Michelin starred
Brit’s hike death
A BRITISH man died last
weekend after getting into
difficulties on a hiking trip
in the Costa del Sol area.
The 62-year-old is reported
to have been trying to
reach the summit of the Pico
de la Concha in the Sierra
Blanca mountains, when he
set off on Saturday morning.
by Alex Trelinski
He sent an alert via his
WhatsApp group on his
mobile phone to his family,
saying that he was in trouble,
sparking a helicopter
search.
The man’s body was found
on Sunday morning.
chef based in Denia. The
town currently has a total of
365 glass igloos, one per 114
inhabitants.
Glass recycling continues
to increase year on year
across Spain, with hotels being
seen as the biggest users
of the material in the summer
months.
However ordinary households
also need to be aware
of the importance of using
the containers rather than
disposing of glass with the
day to day waste.
The Road to Rescue is Rocky!
ANOTHER two rescued
equines arrived at Easy
Horse Care Rescue Centre
a few weeks ago, but
as always there were
many more calls for help
regarding such animals.
What the general public
don’t seem to realise is that
EHCRC already has nearly
120 rescued horses, ponies
and donkeys.
It is logistically impossible
for them to take every
animal that people ask them
to. They have to focus their
attention on those animals
most in need and in conjunction
with the Police and
Guardia Civil. Hence reporting
cases of abuse or abandonment,
ie making a ‘denuncia’
to the Guardia Civil/
Police, is paramount (details
of how to do this can be found
on EHCRC website below).
EHCRC functions without
by Diane O’Neill,
Easy Horse Care
Rescue Centre volunteer
any governmental funding
and relies on donations, volunteers,
their Charity Shops
and the 24/7 unrelenting
drive of the co-founders, Sue
and Rod Weeding.
The first of these rescues
was a darling little pony.
EHCRC received a phone
call from U.R.M.A., the Policia
Local in Callosa de Segura
- they had received an
anonymous call to say there
was a little pony in an appalling
state. They responded
immediately and could
see at a glance that this poor
animal needed help there
and then!
She is the sweetest little
thing, about 9 years old, she
was covered in sores with
dreadful skin problems,
she was very malnourished
and her feet were in an awful
state. Dorothea, their
equine vet, gave her a full
check up and she is receiving
the care she so justly
deserves. The Police want
Dorothea’s report as they
are determined to take this
case to Court. Another step
forward in animal welfare.
The second rescue was an
adorable donkey. The Centre
received a call from Protectora
Pels Pèls Crevillent, an
animal organisation from
Crevillente in the Alicante
Province. The owners of a
property had called them in
the morning after they had
found a donkey, abandoned
tied to the fence of their
house, in very poor condition
with a huge lump under her
tummy.
Pels Pèls don't have the
facilities to keep a donkey, so
they asked EHCRC for help.
Their vet Dorothea determined
that the huge lump
she had was a hernia. As
there was a risk of rupture
that could cause very serious
problems, she needed
to have surgery as soon as
possible. The Hospital Veterinario
San Vicente in Alicante,
agreed to do the operation
and we are delighted to
report that the surgery was
successful and she is now
recovering well. A special
thanks to those who donated
towards her operation.
Many thanks to the Policia
Local in Callosa de Segura
and Crevillente for their
prompt action. Like many
other authorities in the area,
they are so grateful for the
services EHCRC provides
as without them they would
not be able to get out there
and be proactive in the fight
against animal cruelty as so
few organisations have the
facilities to keep equines.
The animals would just have
nowhere to go. However
funding is an issue for them
too. The fight to improve animal
welfare can only continue
with public support and
that of the authorities.
As always EHCRC would
like to thank all their supporters.
To donate or find out
more, check out their website
Scooter madness
with
A 30-year-old man’s death last by Simon Russell
dark and without a helmet when
weekend was the third fatality
he was hit by another vehicle.
involving electronic scooters
in the Paris region in just four
months, opening the question
of whether similar incidents are
going to become more common
in Spain as the devices become
increasingly widespread.
There seems little doubt that
the unnamed man was at fault
in this instance, apparently
driving the scooter on the A86
motorway’s fast lane, in the
However here in Spain there
is a feeling that many e-scooter
riders are also flouting the law,
which admittedly is confusing
and varies from town to town as
legislators struggle to keep up
the new craze.
This is showing no signs of
slowing down as the vehicles
become cheaper and hire companies
spring up in larger cities.
Manufacturers tout the vehicles
green credentials, but early
research shows that rather than
replacing cars and motorbikes the
generally young riders are using
them instead of walking, cycling
or taking public transport.

Airport really flying
by Simon Russell
JULY saw the highest amount
of passengers in a single
month using Valencia airport
in its history, reported management
group Aena this
week.
The 850,000 users was 8.5%
more than in July 2018.
However Alicante remains
very much the major airport in
the region, registering 1.7 million
users last month, 7.7% more
than 2018.
Domestic travel accounted
for around three quarters of the
traffic at Valencia, followed by
people going to or from Italy and
then the UK.
At Alicante the British made up
the largest foreign group followed
by Germans then Norwegians.
Many drownings
preventable
AN in-depth analysis of
drowning deaths in the
northern Valencian province
of Castellon has
shown that two thirds occurred
in places that were
unattended.
A total of 25 people have
drowned there in the last five
years, 16 at the beach and
the rest in pools or rivers. 18
of these were male and just
over half were over the age of
65, something that seems to
be another key factor.
Four of the 25 were children
and four were foreign
nationals. Across the Valencian
Community this year
29 people had drowned by
31 July, already 12 more
than 2018. Across Spain
the figure is 232, a jump of
by Simon Russell
25%. Swimmers are warned
wherever possible to bathe
in a patrolled area and to
follow all safety regulations,
including the beach warning
flag system.
Just this week a 50 year
old man drowned on Playa
Postiguet (Alicante), close to
the Melia Hotel.
He was spotted floating
in the water and Civil Protection
Volunteers were the
first on the scene but he had
already perished.
FIVE PEOPLE have been
arrested for assaulting a
68-year-old woman and
stealing 102 thousand euros
from her at her Elche
area home, after threatening
her with a kitchen
knife.
The incident at her La Marina
village property was an
inside job, as two of those arrested
were a Spanish couple
that knew her well, including
her hoard of money and
her gold jewellery that was
also stolen.
A getaway car used by
three of the gang was chased
by a Guardia Civil patrol
vehicle on the N-332 and
crashed in Santa Pola, with
local police officers helping
to arrest the trio after they
fled on foot.
All of the money and jewellery
was recovered, with
the woman being thrown
onto her bed during the ordeal
and gagged, whilst a
knife was waved in front of
her face.
Unfortunately for the
crooks, a neighbour spotted
them leaving and heard
the woman’s cries for help,
and immediately called the
police.The gang, which included
a Columbian and an
Spaniards, were all refused
200 kilo weight loss
transforms life
by Simon Russell
A YOUNG Valencian man who
hit the headlines last year after
admitting himself to hospital
with morbid obesity has
said that he has turned his
life around after losing an incredible
195 kilos.
35 year old Teo Rodriguez needed
a cattle truck to transfer him
from his home to Manises Hospital
(Valencia City) while the hospital
initially said there was nothing
they could do to help him, implying
Teo’s problems were of his own
making.
However they relented and, after
building a special bed, he began
treatment including a strict diet
and surgery carried out in Granada.
A year or so later Teo has lost
195 kilos (of his initial weight of
385 kilos) and can now do things
that most people his age take for
granted, such as walking, standing
and driving.
He can sleep normally - he previously
needed respirators - and
even tackle stairs.
He is now aiming to return to
work, something he had to give up
over a decade ago due to his size
and immobility.
THE Valencian government
the regions beaches
that is already being
Galicia was the first autonomous
Asturias, Andalusia and the
Balearic Islands.
However the rules are being
applied differently with
some places asking smokers
and others imposing fines of
up to €3,000.
Good neighbours
A HEARTLESS thief got
more than he bargained
for after robbing a 93 year
old woman after he was
chased and captured by
a group of the Valencian
pensioners neighbours.
The 34 year old entered the
victim’s second floor house
in Valencia City through an
open patio window.
The woman caught him in
the act and he grabbed her
to keep her quiet but nearby
residents had already heard
her screams.
Her Venezuelan next door
neighbour was the first on
the scene, in time to see the
thief escaping through the
window.
She called for her husband
who grabbed the culprit
while their teenage daughter
called the police.
The thief managed to
scramble down to the
ground floor but by this
time the main door had
been locked and three other
people appeared on the
scene to help, including a
Romanian who had been
scouring the bins for scrap
metal.
by Simon Russell
The man still managed to
make his way outside but
was chased down the street
by the group and cornered.
The police then arrived
and the thief was detained
and arrested.
The victim was treated for
facial injuries but has been
allowed to return home.
Rare bird saved
A HUNTER was partly to
thank for the rescue of
a protected eagle owl in
Mutxamel (Alicante) after
he reported seeing it
tangled in a barbed wire
fence in the Cotoveta rural
area.
The usually nocturnal
creature had its wing stuck
in the top of the fence which
was in front of an irrigation
pond.
The owl’s struggles to
free itself had badly cut the
wing joint but thankfully the
Seprona agents who attended
the scene were able to free
the bird. It was taken to the
Santa Faz Wild Animal Recovery
Centre where it will
be treated and eventually
returned to the wild.
The Guardia Civil have
made enquiries about the
barbed wire fence being removed
as they believe more
animals are likely to become
trapped, possibly attracted
by the water.
The eagle owl (bubo bubo)
is one of Europe’s largest
birds of prey and are
protected in Spain.
Benidorm butts out
COUNCILLORS in Benidorm,
beachgoers to dispose of
The campaign, with a tagline
saying, ‘The beach is not
earlier this week by the
Beaches and Environment
who stressed that to achieve
this goal it is “absolutely
More than 20,000, free, reuseable
ashtrays have been
first aid points, sun bed
stations, tourist information
centres and public areas,
with the aim of preventing
smokers stubbing out their
“A cigarette butt takes
ten to 15 years to disappear
to causing damage to birds
The municipal ordinance
states that unattended parasols
cannot be left before 9.30am.
Social networks have had
many outraged comments
hoped that, as with last year,
the Local Police get involved
and confiscate the items.
very serious injury after being
Mikel Callejas Soria, an
he remained conscious and
was even able to see the
culprit, a jet ski with two
occupants.
They had fallen into the
water after the impact but
rather than stop and help
Mikel they clambered back
on their vehicle and sped
off.
The victim made his way
to shore and received treatment
at the medical centre
where he required six staples
in a head wound, though
all agree it could have been
much worse.
Mikel had been filming at
The “La Mañana” broadcast
Boris battle begins
A LEGAL challenge to try
to prevent Boris Johnson
shutting down parliament
to force through a no-deal
Brexit begun in a Scottish
court this week.
by Alex Trelinski
The case is beginning in
the Scottish courts because
they sit through the summer,
unlike their English
counterparts. A group of
MPs and peers wants the
Court of Session in Edinburgh
to rule that suspending
parliament to
make the UK leave the EU
without a deal is “unlawful
and unconstitutional”.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson
has repeatedly refused to
rule out such a move.
Lord Doherty agreed to hear
arguments from both sides
in September. However he
refused to accelerate the case
through the Scottish courts,
with the petitioners voicing
fears that they may run out of
time before the UK is due to
leave the EU on 31 October.
The start of the legal action
Church in taxman’s sights
THE Valencian town hall
is hoping to raise two million
euros in property tax
by identifying buildings
that are wrongly listed as
exempt across the city for
religious reasons.
The vast majority of these
belong to the Catholic church
and while places of worship
by Simon Russell
and buildings used for charitable
work such as Caritas
social centres will remain
exempt, many church owned
properties are being used for
commercial purposes.
They are being rented out
as for anything from bike
came as it emerged the UK
government expects a group
of MPs to try to block a no-deal
Brexit by attempting to pass
legislation when Parliament
returns next month.
A No 10 source said they
expected the challenge to
come in the second week of
September, when MPs are
due to debate a report on
Northern Ireland.
The source assumes the
EU will wait until after that
date before engaging in further
negotiations.
More than 70 politicians
have put their names behind
the latest Scottish court
move, including Lib Dem
leader Jo Swinson and SNP
MP Joanna Cherry.
A challenge brought by
the same group of anti-
Brexit politicians last year
saw the European Court of
Justice rule that the UK can
cancel Brexit without the
permission of the other 27
EU members.
hire shops to hostels and
are escaping IBI tax simply
because they are listed as
“religious buildings”. The
council believe there may
be as much as 1,700 such
buildings across the city but
admit the task of identifying
them and confirming their
purpose will be laborious.
Beards back on the
menu at Burger King
DESPITE the fact that
the Burger King mascot
sports an impressive
beard, facial hair
is actually banned
for staff working at
the fast food giant in
Spain.
However the Catalan
government has now
ruled that this violates
worker’s rights after
a union asked them to
rule on the matter.
Burger King always
said that this was a
health and safety rather
than appearance issue,
but the commissions
by Simon Russell
said that this could easily
be worked round by
measures such as wearing
“beard nets”.
A company rule which
states that male staff
have to wear a tie and
females a ribbon was
also found to be unfair.
Burger King employs
around 1,250 staff in
46 restaurants in Catalonia
and the union
said it is hoped that
the new rules will now
be voluntarily applied
across Spain.

SANDY beaches, glorious
dunes, secluded coves
and spectacular cliff tops.
Located on the edge of
bustling towns or in hidden
heavenly spots, when
it comes to hitting the
beach in Costa Blanca the
choice is almost endless.
As its tourism chiefs declare:
“The Costa Blanca is
blue.” That’s the colour of the
large number of flags proudly
flying to demonstrate the
quality of the waters of its
200 kilometres of coast.
Here is an impressive
statistic. Alicante has more
than 170 beaches and coves
where the sun shines for
over 300 days a year.
To the north, in the Marina
Alta region, the mountain
landscape approaches
the shore to create stunning
cliffs and coves looking out
onto the long sandy beaches
of Denia, Javea and Benissa.
Benidorm offers some of
the best known and visited
beaches in Spain. Towards
the south, from Alicante to
Pilar de la Horadada, there
is a change of landscape,
with steep coves turning
into dunes, especially in
Guardamar del Segura.
Here are just some of
the Costa’s best beaches -
ideal places to enjoy fun in
the sun.
Playa del Postiguet
Located in Alicante city cen-
tre, in the foothills of Santa
Bárbara castle, this beach
is bordered by a promenade
full of palm trees. With its
golden sand and calm waters,
it also offers accesses
for disabled people.
Cala Mal Pas
This small cove separates
the main two beaches of
Benidorm - Levante and
Poniente. With fine golden
sand, and a quiet atmosphere
it’s the perfect place
to relax.
Levante and Poniente
are Benidorm’s main blueflag
beaches, separated by
the old town. Both are excellent
for families, with
play parks on the sand,
showers and even a beach
library.
Further south, the former
fishing village of La Vila
Joiosa boasts another five
blue flags.
Cala Ferris
Cala Ferris, dotted with
palm trees and small dunes
and with crystal waters,
offers the chance to enjoy
peace and quiet, only broken
by the sounds of birds and
the coming and going of the
sea. This is another excellent
place for divers.
All are well-known for
is so natural
COSTA Blanca may be
famed for its idyllic beaches
and coastal grandeur
but head inland and you
will find yourself at one
with nature.
Spectacular mountain ranges
and valleys are waiting to
be explored. Costa Blanca is
home to ten natural parks.
They provide the region
with unique and varied
landscapes, guaranteed to
surprise all visitors.
A visit inland is also an
opportunity to take in its
archaeological heritage,
which includes cave paintings
and Iberian and Roman
archaeological remains.
Costa Blanca is also the second
most mountainous province
in Spain, with peaks more
than 1,000 metres in altitude
and is a magnet for hikers.
The region also offers visitors
the chance to discover
its unique, native flora as
well as forests which are protected
and scarce in Europe -
such as the lime tree forest in
the Mariola mountain range.
This natural park in particular
offers spectacular views
and a range of plants that cannot
be found anywhere else. A
visit to the Maigmó mountain
range also offers one of the
best views of the coast.
For the intrepid explorer,
the Costa Blanca Inland Path
is a 435 km route divided into
20 different stages.
It offers diverse and contrasting
landscapes and
the chance to discover more
about the culture of the
province of Alicante.
Visit historical remains, uncover
myths and legends and
discover different traditions,
customs and local cuisine.
The route takes in emblematic
peaks such as the Aitana
Peak and Montcabrer. And
it winds its way through a
variety of landscapes.
Explorers will pass
through wild places with
almond and olive groves, fertile
orchards and vineyards,
watercourses, ravines and
areas of dense pine forest
and lush vegetation.
They will take on steep
slopes, journey to lagoons
and salt flats and finally end
the route in a tranquil journey
beside the River Segura.
The wide variety of terrain
also make this a paradise
for bird watchers. The
mountains attract the great
birds of prey such as eagles
and vultures.
Equally, if not more spectacular,
is the greater flamingo,
Since the year 2000 the average
age of a first time buyer
by Simon Russell
has increased from 25 to 33
and the trend is continuing, say
Santander.
Miguel Sard from Santander
Mortgages said “Without change,
home-ownership in the UK is at
risk of becoming the preserve of
only the wealthiest young buyers
over the next decade”.
To maximise their chance of
getting a foot on the property
ladder millennials are advised
to take advantage of government
schemes and be flexible about location,
one of the drivers of burgeoning
house prices. Cutting
back on spending and wise investment
from a young age are also
recommended.
However while unemployment
in the UK is almost historically
low, wages for young people are
rarely sufficient to let them enter
the housing market.

Mortgage rate falls
by Alex Trelinski
SPANISH homeowners with
a mortgage due for an annual
review at the end of
last month, will see their
monthly payments drop
again after the Euribor hit
a new historic low.
The Eurozone interest
rate, upon which mortgages
in Spain are based, ended
July on -0.282%, breaking
the record low set in March
2018 of -0.191%.
From then until March
this year, the Euribor continued
to rise, but only very
slightly and remained in
negative figures.
It has now been in negative
for 41 consecutive
months and no interest rate
rise has been put into place
since 2011.
Last year, homeowners in
Spain were, in many cases,
starting to consider switching
to fixed-rate mortgages
due to the very tiny but
steady rise in the Eurozone
interest rate which experts
had been warning of for
some time.
Many feared it would
rocket to its highest-ever
level, which was 5.393% and
reached in July 2008,- but
the Central European Bank
(BCE) has never introduced
a sharp hike and has long
been keeping rates down to
aid growth in the common
currency area.
Its chairman Mario
Draghi had been talking
about a possible slight increase
after the summer,
but in March he announced
there would be no plans to
do so until at least the year
2020 due to a weakening in
the Eurozone economy.
Last year, the Euribor
closed July on -0.18%, meaning
mortgages due for their
annual revision will see a
saving of approximately
€4.50 a month based upon a
loan of €100,000 over a 25-
year term.
A figure and loan term
such as this would typically
involve monthly repayments
last July of €368.74, but a
review of it in July would see
these fall to €364.24.
But even if the Euribor
shows signs of rising, mortgage
holders in Spain would
not need to rush to apply a
fixed rate.
Unlike in the UK, where
the central bank interest
rate on the day the monthly
repayment is due applies –
leaving quotas constantly
open to fluctuation on a
variable-rate mortgage – in
Spain, repayments are adjusted
annually.
This means that if the
Euribor starts to rise,
homeowners have a full 12
months between reviews to
decide what to do.
Rental chance ignored
by Alex Trelinski
AS cranes and new construction
sites have reappeared
across the Costa
Blanca in the last 18
months, a new survey suggests
that the Valencia region
accounts for 19 per
cent of the total of Spain´s
unsold new properties, and
that the possibility of renting
them out is not being
seized.
The figure stands at over
97 thousand of the half-million
plus empty buildings in
the whole of Spain, with a
number of new construction
sites on the Costa Blanca already
being slowed down or
even suspended, as the take
up is not what was expected
last year.
The survey backs up figures
from Spanish notaries
who report a buoyant market
in second-hand sales,
especially in tourist areas,
but a slowing-down in new
property deals.
After Valencia, the largest
figure of empty new constructions
is in the northeast
region of Catalunya at
16 per cent, closely followed
by Andalucia in the south at
15 per cent.
Housing expert, Ferran
Font, said that the large
number of new empty properties
was also contributing
to rent rises across Spain,
which still has a large number
of unused housing, as
construction still continues,
and that an opportunity is
being missed.
Font says that promoters
have got themselves into a
bind where they won´t even
consider getting some rental
income for unsold properties,
because they are worried
about what kind of condition
the home will be left in, once a
lease period ends. Defaulting
on rentals is another concern.
His survey says that the
total of empty new properties
that are not rented out in the
Valencian region means that
around six million euros of
rent is not gathered in each
year, at a regional average of
over 11 thousand euros per
property per annum, which
with rent hikes, is 16 per
cent more compared to 2018
average levels.
The Valencia rental possibility
is a mere snip com-
pared to the possibility of
a Madrid property earning
over 20 thousand euros per
annum, and the Balearic
Islands standing at 16 thousand
euros.
FRIDAY 16TH AUGUST 2019 31
Trend towards
renting continues
THE slow but steady trend
of Spanish becoming renters
rather than home owners
is continuing, with the
figure now at 18%, almost
a fifth of the population.
Traditionally Spain has
been a nation of property
owners, at 77% compared to
the EU average of 69%.
However in the last decade
those renting has increased
by 4%, mainly due to
young people being unable to
get on the housing ladder for
financial reasons.
These include high unemployment,
low wages,
by Simon Russell
temporary work and foreign
buyers pushing up prices in
parts of the country.
The place with the most
renters are the Canary and
Balearic Islands (about
28%) while in Castilla-La
Mancha (where housing is
cheaper as a rule) the figure
is only 10%.
Slow death of the landline
A SOCIAL indicators survey
has found that only about a
third of Valencian homes
now have a landline, a figure
that was close to 100%
just a few years ago.
Of course the rise of the
mobile is the reason for
this and 98.6% of people in
the Community now own at
by Simon Russell
least one of these. The same
survey found that more or
less every Valencian home
has a TV while most have a
computer.
The survey also looked into
regional demographics and
found that a fifth of the population
here, about a million
people, are now over 65 years
old with a trend towards an increasing
number of pensioners
and less children.
55% of households now
consists of at least one pensioner
and their retirement
benefits form an important
part of many families income.
ALL children at some time
or another have short term
medical needs. This may
be, for example, short
term medication such as a
course of antibiotics.
There are, however, children
who suffer from longterm
health conditions, such
as asthma or diabetes. It is
essential that their schools
are informed of these conditions
and the medication the
children take, and also know
how to handle an emergency
situation.
It is important to remember
that children with
medical needs, like diabetes,
asthma, epilepsy and allergy,
have the same rights of admission
to schools as any other
child, regardless of needing
some extra support form
teachers and school staff.
Nevertheless, there are
some long-term health conditions
that call for a school
that is specially equipped to
ensure the child’s safety.
You must always contact
you child’s school to discuss
how the situation will be
managed.
Your family doctor will advise
you on the best way to
inform the school and help
decide the arrangements
that must be made by the
school, such as storing and
administering medicines.
Upon informing the school,
you must include:
• Details of medicines and
their proper administration.
• Possible side effects.
• Emergency situations:
what to do and what not
to do.
• Special requirements (dietary
needs).
• How often your child will
be absent form school.
All in all, if the child’s condition
can be correctly managed
with minimal involvement
from the school, this
will be easier for you and the
school.
However, the school
should have policies that
determine how it manages
medicines and long-term
medical conditions.
Staff members administering
medicines ought to be
fully trained, and the school
must have an emergency
contact number. Also, your
school should help your child
participate in physical activities
and school trips whenever
possible.
It is vital your child should
not feel left out due to their
condition. They should feel
like any other child, with the
same opportunities as their
friends and classmates.
School Medicals
What many parents don’t realise
(especially those families
new to Spain) is that the
majority of schools require
new students to have a school
medical.
4 tips to find total confidence
through music
THE power of music extends
beyond just a good
beat to listen to. It can be
a source of inspiration for
new ideas or serve as an instant
confidence booster at
times when you need a little
push. Whatever the reason
may be for pressing play,
music can inspire you to get
out of your comfort zone
and try something new.
To get aspiring musicians
and fans alike started with
their musical explorations in
the New Year, Total Wireless
is sharing four tips on how to
find total confidence through
the power of music.
1. Learn a new instrument:
Joining a music class
with a friend is a great way
to feel more confident about
your new venture. Whether
you’re picking up your first
instrument or are already a
skilled musician, challenge
yourself to learn something
new and push yourself out of
your comfort zone. It can feel
intimidating to know where
to begin, so use your smartphone
to do a little research
before taking the next step.
2. Make a confidence-boosting
playlist: When you’re having
a tough day, use the power
of music to give yourself
an instant confidence boost.
Using your favorite musicstreaming
app on your smartphone,
compile a playlist of
your favorite songs for a quick
pick-me-up wherever you are!
And with the new MEGA plan
from Total Wireless, you can
get 25GB of 4G LTE† data for
only $50 so you’ll never have
to worry about running out of
data while listening to your
favourite songs.
3. Discover new music: Diversify
your song library and
discover new music by using
your smartphone to explore
new artists and genres. Get
started by searching for artists
that are similar to a few
of your current favorites, or
select a random playlist on
your favorite music streaming
app and see what new artists
are recommended for you.
If you’re feeling adventurous,
you can even take your music
exploration a step further
and check out a local band (or
two!) at their next show.
4. Take the stage: Resolve
to broaden your horizons
and take that next big step
to center stage. If you’re a
longtime musician, aim to
book a gig at the largest venue
you’ve ever performed at,
or if you’re new to the craft,
find the courage to get up
during an open mic and test
out a new song. While this
can be intimidating, just go
for it and remind yourself
that “you got this.”
Whether you’re an experienced
musician or a playlist
professional, remember to get
out there and try something
new when it comes to furthering
your knowledge of music
or exploring new musical interests!
And while you’re at
it, discover more on the latest
devices and great rate plans
Dog days down
on the beach
WANT to share your fun
day at the beach with
your four-legged friend
- but unsure where you
can go?
A growing number of
dog-friendly beaches can
be found across Spain,
with the Costa Blanca
offering a number of
stretches of sand that now
welcome canine visitors
and owners.
The Red Canina website
has recently updated its
interactive map of Spain’s
dog beaches – and the good
news for dog lovers is there
are 10 more listed compared
to summer 2018.
Here we look at just
some of the Costa Blanca’s
dog-friendly beaches and
what they offer:
Agua Amarga
Located in the city of Alicante,
between the port
and Urbanova, this stretch
of sand is 250 metres long.
Established in 2016, the
beach is well marked and
one of the few in Spain that
offers exclusive services
for dogs.
It has an adapted beach
bar where, besides meals
and drinks, specific dog
treats and food are also
served And this ‘doggy
beach’ has water fountains
to quench the thirst of the
thirstiest pooch.
Agua Amarga also has
an “exceptional” cleaning
service, and a specific
off-leash area.
Caleta dels
Gossets
South of Alicante, this
small cove of rock and find
sand in Santa Pola has
been open to dogs since
May 2016 and is muchloved
by visitors.
With its rock and find
sand, and just minutes
away from Gran Alacant,
it is rated by some as the
best canine beach in the
province.
Calas del Cuartel
You can find this doggy
beach by the Santa Pola
lighthouse. It is a small
stretch of sand with a scattering
of pebbles. Owners
are allowed to bring a
maximum of two dogs to
this part of the coastline.
Torrevieja offers two
more dog friendly spaces:
Punta Margalla and Cala
Make sure your dog is beach ready
COSTA Blanca’s dog beaches
have regulations and guidelines
that must be followed.
If your dog is categorised as a
dangerous dog in Spain, it must
wear a muzzle.
Your pets must be on leads on
the beach with the exception of
being in clear, open water.
Don’t forget to scoop your
dog’s poop and dispose of it correctly
and remember as owners
you must carry their pet passport
and ID card.
If you don’t have the relevant
documentation and up-to-date
vaccinations you risk being cautioned
and fined.
Also, don’t forget to take
clean, fresh water and a
bowl for your dog as well as a
The history of Rome is
endless. From its roots inside
the Roman Empire, the
city is filled with architecture
showcasing the changes
of style through the years.
You can hardly imagine visiting
this city without a visit
the Colosseum – a stone Amphitheatre
built in the heart
of the city, where Rome´s
citizens gathered to watch
the Gladiators fight, animal
hunts and theatrical recreations
of mighty battles that
had taken place. In ruins
mostly from earthquakes as
well as stone robbers, this
attraction is still a must-see
when in Rome, having been
the Number 1 most visited
attraction in the world in
2018, with visitor numbers
of 7.4 million people.
Take a moment to look
upon the Trevi Fountain,
the most famous fountain in
the world, featured in many
famous films. The Fountain
was built after a competition
was put to the people to see
who could design the most
elaborate fountain (the existing
one did not meet the expectations
of the Pope Urban
VIII. Although initially won
by an architect from Florence,
there was such an outcry
from the citizens of Rome,
that the project was finally
awarded to Nicola Salvi, an
architect from Rome.
Another winner of a design
competition, Francesco de
Sanctis, planned and built the
famous “Spanish Steps”. This
staircase of 174 steps was actually
built with French money
and named due to the location
of the Spanish Square
where the Spanish Embassy
was located.
Of course, you cannot
visit Rome and not mention
the food! As you can imagine,
this is THE place to try
traditional Italian dishes.
Almost all restaurants will
offer the same traditional
dishes, but not all are equal!
Do some homework to find
some the best recommended
and check too that they are
not the tourist traps that
can easily part you with
your cash! In and around the
Trastavere area, both good
restaurants, good accommodation
and good prices can
be had!
There are direct flights
from Alicante to Rome all
year round, giving you the
chance to explore this amazing
city, and for some, to stay
a night or two prior to taking
SEAT CELEBRATES
1 MILLION
LEON SALES
THIS week the third generation
SEAT Leon has achieved 1 million
sales since its launch in 2012.
SEAT’s biggest-selling vehicle
was presented at the Paris Motor
Show that year and arrived to
market shortly after with a completely
renewed design.
Thanks to the “formula Leon”,
based on design and functionality, it
became the most widely sold model
in the SEAT range, overcoming the
dominance held by Ibiza for the previous
30 years.
Designed, developed and produced
in Martorell, the current generation
Leon has been built on the Volkswagen
Group’s modular MQB platform
since it first rolled off the production
line. This platform involved an investment
of 800 million euros at the
time and meant an unprecedented
leap in technology. With the Leon,
production quality increased in line
with Group standards, and it consolidated
1,600 direct jobs at the factory
and more than 6,000 in supporting
industries.
SEAT President Luca de Meo explained
that, “the SEAT Leon, and
in particular the third generation,
is the true pillar of the brand; it is
FRIDAY 16TH AUGUST 2019 39
Motoring
• Third generation of SEAT’s family car has reached 1 million sales since its launch in 2012
• UK, Spain and Germany are the main markets for Leon
• The third generation changed the recent history of the brand
the most widely recognised and appreciated
car by SEAT customers on
all five continents. The Leon is one
of the major driving forces behind
the transformation of the company
and has contributed to the sales record
that SEAT posted in 2018, with
517,600 vehicle deliveries.”
The car that changed SEAT
The success of the Leon transformed
SEAT’s recent history from
a commercial and financial standpoint,
and implied a qualitative leap
in the perception of the brand image.
Likewise, the Leon also enabled the
increase of profitability margin per
SEAT model, which contributed to
turning the negative figures of 2012
(-149 million euros) to the best ever
in the history of the company (profit
after tax of 294 million euros in 2018).
SEAT closed 2012 with a total of
321,000 cars sold, nearly the same
amount of vehicles delivered in the
first six months of 2019 (314,300).
Furthermore, the Leon has been a
key model for boosting sales in countries
such as Germany and the UK,
where SEAT deliveries have gone up
by almost 70% and 60% respectively
since 2012. The Leon is still SEAT’s
top-selling model, and one out of every
four cars sold by the brand in the
first six months of 2019 was a Leon.
The Leon was the first car in its
segment to feature the iconic headlamps
equipped with full LED technology
which, together with the
blisters on its dynamic chassis, gave
it personality and a sense of sportiness.
The gradual implementation of
the latest technologies such as SEAT
Full Link and, more recently, the
digital cockpit and wireless charger
provided customers with connectivity
and convenience inside the vehicle.
These advances have all enabled
the Leon to create its hallmark on
the industry.
At the beginning, SEAT presented
this family car with three body
types: three-door, five-door and estate,
which was later joined by the
X-PERIENCE version in certain
markets. The SEAT Leon is currently
commercialised with the fivedoor
and estate body types, equipped
with petrol, diesel and the sustainable
compressed natural gas engines
(depending on country), as well as a
CUPRA version.
SEAT Vice-president for Sales and
Marketing and CUPRA CEO Wayne
Griffiths emphasised that “the most
prominent aspect of this third generation
of the SEAT Leon is the wide
acceptance that it still has in the
market, even after seven years.
In 2017, the current generation
of the Leon achieved its record with
170,000 cars sold and now in 2019,
we are still confident that it will
maintain its volume at a high level
close to this figure. The Leon has
been, is and will continue to be one
of the most relevant models for both
SEAT and CUPRA. Its different body
types and versions make it the most
multi-purpose and versatile car of
the brand.
PROTOCOL
STUPIDY
THIS week’s bit of British bureaucratic
nonsense is about
two volunteer coastguards, who
were sacked for stopping a car
going over a cliff, because they
breached “protocols”.
As a result, their coastguard station
at Hope Cove was closed down,
and the guys claim that lives could
be lost.
Ian Pedrick and Richard Clarkson
THEY may not be enough to buy a decent
jar of marmalade, but new 50p
coins featuring Paddington Bear have
entered circulation back in Britain.
Two new coins - featuring the bear
from darkest Peru at the Tower of London
and St Paul’s Cathedral - have been
released by The Royal Mint.
On Tuesday, they filled the tills at the
Mint’s museum in Llantrisant, South
Wales, and will be circulated more generally
in the coming weeks. The coins mark
lost their positions after towing
the car to safety with their own
vehicle two months ago at Bolberry
Down, Devon.
That meant their base being
closed down, but the Maritime and
Coastguard Agency said the area
remained “well resourced”.
The MCA said the pair should
have cordoned off the area and called
in appropriate recovery resources,
BEAR’S CAPITAL FUN
60 years of Paddington, after the first
book was published in October 1958 and
the series following his adventures have
become classics of children’s literature.
Last year, the Mint released 50p coins
depicting the fictional bear visiting other
London landmarks - the train station after
which he was named, and the guards
outside Buckingham Palace.
They’re certainly more fun than the
money being wasted on producing Brexit
50p coins, which nobody cares about.
but they removed their coastguard
uniforms and towed the car using Mr
Clarkson’s Land Rover.
Sounds like good human instinct to
me, and the MCA said that the men
“disregarded protocols”, which is the
usual verbal tripe served in such cases,
as opposed to offering appreciation to
the common sense shown by the duo.

AMAZON’S
PRIME CHUCK
A WOMAN said she was left
amazed by an “extra special”
Amazon delivery after a box of
LED bulbs was apparently
thrown
through an open
upstairs window.
Claudine McLaren,
from Houghton
on the Hill, Leicestershire,
returned
home on Monday to
find a note saying
the parcel was put
through an “open window”.
She found it “weird” as all the
downstairs windows were closed, but
she then found the undamaged
box upstairs.
“We thought it was hilarious,
he must have been
confident,” she said.
Amazon said it expected
all packages to be
handled with care from its
delivery partners.
“The window is ten foot
up and there’s no evidence
THANKS FOR NOTHING
he’s used a ladder,” said Claudine.
“It’s quite a public place, someone
must have seen him do it. I’d love to
find out.”
“I guess I’d have felt differently
had the bulbs been broken.”
The parcel was about 22cm x 22cm
in length and the window not much
bigger at 42cm x 48cm.
“My mum said he was probably a
cricketer,” Claudine added.
This is not a wind-up, trust me, as
the fools sent the bill to rescuers after
her life was saved when she drifted
out to sea off Porthleven in Cornwall.
Mike Carter, president of the RNLI
branch, said a rescue helicopter had
to be used to save the youngster when
she got into a precarious situation.
from a local shop and went to the beach,
and there was an off-shore wind as the
parents immediately experienced their
child waving goodbye as the lilo went
further and further out to sea”.
“The coastguard scrambled the SAR
helicopter and a diver jumped from
the the chopper and saved the child.
He instantly put a knife through the
both winched to safety.”
After receiving the invoice, Mike
said the rescuer replied saying they
would happily pay - if the family paid
for the cost of launching the helicopter,
and not surprisingly they have
not got a reply.
Drop Quotes
DROP QUOTES
Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms,
in that the goal is for the solver to uncover
a hidden quote. A black-and-white
crossword-style grid is set up for each
quote, with a number of letters “hovering”
above each column. Your task is
to “drop” each of those letters into the
appropriate square in each column, until
the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation
(commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has
been removed. Good luck!
Mansell’s
Stars In My Eyes
THE GAZZA DANCE
George at Christmas
Good news for all George Michael fans,
including myself, who miss the late,
great songwriter’s musical genius.
The first trailer for Last Christmas, the
highly-anticipated romcom scripted
by Emma Thompson, directed by Paul
Feig and themed around the songs of
George, has been released.
The film, which is due to hit screens in
November, has only recently finished
shooting in London.
Thompson began writing the film while
Michael was still alive, and the plot
– especially its homelessness theme –
had his blessing.
Since his death on Christmas Day 2016,
Feig and Thompson have reportedly
worked closely with his estate, and the
film will feature at least one unreleased
track recorded by the singer.
Christmas
with George?
“The great sadness is that he’s not here
to be a part of this,” Feig has said. “But
he knew it was going to happen, and
that gives me such joy. We feel like he’s
here with us.”
I for one, can’t wait until Christmas now.
Paul Gascoine’s son Regan, seems to
be dead set on TV stardom, if news
leaked from auditions of BBC1’s, The
Greatest Dancer is to be believed.
With a failed attempt at forging a
career in music, already behind him
five years ago, the footballer’s kid is
having another go on the channel’s
prime time Saturday night show.
According to The Sun, the lad
auditioned in front of dance captains
Otis Mabuse, Cheryl, Matthew
Morrison and Todrick Hall and kept
his famous father a secret.
A show source told the publication:
‘Regan wanted to be taken seriously
in his own right. He turned up and
gave his name but no one really made
the link. ‘The dance captains and
the audience had no clue his dad is
football royalty.’
I can’t quite believe former Drag Race
star, Todrick, would have the faintest
idea what a football is, let alone who
the heck Gazza might be.
THE LAD’S
LINDA SPARKLES IN 30 YEAR OLD BIKINI
Be honest, could any of you
dear readers squeeze into
a bikini or swim suit, you
wore on your Summer hols
in 1989?
I think I know the answer,
which makes this recent pic
of former glamour model
Linda Lusardi, sporting the
very same gold two piece,
she wore thirty years ago, all
the more remarkable.
“I can’t believe I’m wearing
the same sparkly bikini
I wore back in the day. I
found it in my attic the other
weekend while I was doing
With last week’s
searing temperatures
and unbearable
humidity still in
the memory, it’s
hard to believe, one
of the Autumn’s
blockbuster TV
shows, is due back
on our screens in
just over a week.
Yes, Channel 4 has
announced the start date for the 2019
series, which will reunite judges
Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood with
presenters Noel Fielding and Sandi
Toksvig.
The new series will kick off on 27
August, bringing a fresh batch of
a big clear-out, and it still
fits,” she explained to Best
magazine.
Looking amazing, the
sixty-year-old (yes, 60!),
model/actress, who struck
the same pose she took
all those years ago, added,
“My mum, Lila, is 86 and
still a size 8. And my dad,
who I sadly lost a couple of
years ago, was in incredible
shape. I watch my weight,
but I’m very lucky with my
metabolism.”
Now you lot …… Step away
SOGGY BOTTOMS IN AUGUST
mentions a soggy bottom …… Well!!
Sneaky
Strike a
As a Midlands boy myself, I can’t wait
for the upcoming season 5 of Peaky
Blinders, mostly filmed in and around
the fantastic Black Country Living
Museum.
The hit drama is making the leap to
BBC One, with Cillian Murphy back
again as Tommy Shelby.
Series five jumps forward in time to
a period of unrest in British politics,
with episode one beginning with the
Blinders
return
Wall Street crash of 1929.
We quickly see the impact this has
had with nationalism, populism,
racism and fascism sweeping across
the Western world.
With Tommy now acting as an MP, he
is approached by charismatic, fascist
politician Sir Oswald Mosley who has
a bold vision for Britain.
It all sounds bostin’ to me!

Alfaz Fantasy Football League
WEEK 1
THE 26th Alfaz Fantasy
Football League got off
to a fine start last week,
with the Premier League
providing the Fantasy
with a total of 27 goals,
nine clean sheets, 25 yellow
cards and one red
one, which was Everton's
Schneiderlin who was removed
by Referee Jonathan
Ross after showing
him two yellow cards.
Defenders were the main
scorers in the Fantasy with
nine clean sheets helping to
take the average score up to
a massive 43 points.
There were plenty of Fantasy
points up for grabs and
the first team to take advantage
was Tony Red's team
Miles Platting Swifts who
flew to the number one spot
after rattling up 72 points.
Four of his players hit double
figures, with Salah (10),
Sterling (15) Kane (12) and
Rashford (14) all amongst
the goals. Villa fan Macca's
team Albir Villains are only
three points behind the leaders,
followed by Hannah's
Vicepresident United. Down
at the bottom of the table,
two teams are sharing the
load of holding everybody
else up and they are Mark's
Tory Boys United and Len's
MAK You are the Best, who
both managed to collect a
creditable 18 points.
Vicepresident United are
the early front-runners in our
Mark Carter Ladies Section
with a slim three point avantage
over Barbra's XI who
had a good season last year,
finishing second. Elaine's
Dizzie Blonde have started
well and are tucked nicely in
third place just three points
ahead of Pauline's Vodka
Army. At the opposite end
of the table, Sharon's Rover
and Out are trailing Kerry's
Penfold Puffins by six points.
Last Seasons Champions
William & Henry have started
off where they left off at the
top of our Junior League. At
the moment they have a very
slight one point lead over Ollie’s
team Olly XI and Harrison's
Boden Boys. Down at
the other end, Gian who is no
stranger to a relegation battle,
has his team Fleetpool just
two points adrift of two teams,
Robbie's Pique Blinders and
Olly & Jims team.
Our Across the Costa's
Golden Boot League with 27
goals hitting the back of the
net, meant it was a good start
for this Division which once
again Tony Red's team Miles
Platting Swifts took advantage
of by making the top
spot for the second time this
week with a tally of 55 points,
giving them a nine point lead
over Simon's As Terribles.
Two teams are in joint third
place and they are Ben's Guadmantell
and Glyn's Goatherders.
At the very foot of
the table five teams have yet
to score, Olly & Jim, Super
Saints, Xavi Skateboardos,
Fleetpool and Kyle's All Stars.
Three teams wil go into
our Monthly Wine Draw
and they our top scoring
team which is Miles Plating
Swifts (72) and our two lowest
scoring teams, which are
Tory Boys United (18) and
MAK You are the Best (18).
Manager of the Month for
August is being sponsored by
RUTHLESS
JONES
ACTS
HEAD coach Eddie Jones said England “need people who
have got a samurai spirit” after naming his squad this week
for the Rugby World Cup in Japan.
Jones gave shock call-ups to flanker Lewis Ludlam and
uncapped wing Ruaridh McConnochie in the 31-man
group. Gloucester scrum-half Willi Heinz, 32, whose
England debut came in Sunday’s win at Twickenham
against Wales, is also in the squad, but centre Ben
Te’o is not.
“You need guys who are mature, who enjoy life,”
said Jones.
“And we’ve deliberately picked a squad like that
because it’s going to be an important factor.
“This is an enormous cultural event apart from
being a sporting event and you’ve got to be able
to cope with the different culture.”
The World Cup runs from September 20th to
November 2nd , with Jones naming his squad
well before the deadline of September 8th.
England have another warm-up clash
against Wales tomorrow in Cardiff.
MURRAY HOLDS BACK
THE former world number
one tennis player, Andy
Murray, has decided not
to play singles at the US
Open, which starts a week
on Monday.
Murray played his first singles
match at the start of the
week since career-saving hip
surgery in January – a 6-4 6-4
loss to France’s Richard Gasquet
at the Cincinnati Open.
However, he had been
asked to make a decision
on accepting a wildcard for
the US Open prior to facing
Gasquet.
“I didn’t feel I was able to
make that decision before
today’s match,” said Murray,
by Alex Trelinski
32. Murray says he intends
to play doubles and mixed
doubles at the Grand Slam
in New York, which starts on
August 26th.
Monday’s match produced
plenty of good signs for the
Scot, though he struggled at
times with his serve, but his
movement got better and better
as the contest progressed.
He plans to play singles in
a number of Asian tournaments
in the autumn, and
may even enter next week’s
Winston-Salem Open, which
is the final event before the
US Open.
RED’S HERO ADRIAN
LIVERPOOL won the Super by Alex Trelinski
won his first trophy as Liverpool
boss when he led the Reds
Cup for the fourth time in
their history by beating
Chelsea 5-4 on penalties
after a 2-2 draw in Istanbul
on Wednesday.
Goalkeeper Adrian kept
out Tammy Abraham’s spot
kick to secure victory for the
Champions League winners.
Chelsea had taken the lead
in the first half through Olivier
Giroud’s clinical strike
but Sadio Mane scored twice
to give Liverpool the lead.
Jorginho’s spot-kick took
the game to penalties, where
Liverpool triumphed.
The win comes just two
months after Jurgen Klopp
to a 2-0 win over Tottenham in
the Champions League final.
Games between these two
sides in Europe have historically
been tight affairs, with
just one of their 10 previous
meetings having been won
by a margin of more than
one goal.
MANCHESTER United will
not entertain any offers for
Paul Pogba before the close
of the European transfer
windows early next month.
Pogba, 26, admitted he was
still uncertain about his future
at Old Trafford after Sunday’s
impressive 4-0 win over Chelsea,
when he set up United’s
third and fourth goals.
With the Spanish and Italian
transfer windows not
shutting until Sept. 2nd, there
remains the option for Pogba’s
two main suitors, Real Madrid
and Juventus, to test United’s
resolve over Pogba in the coming
weeks.
But United have no intention
of allowing Pogba to
depart on several grounds.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer considers
Pogba to be central to his
plans this season and, encouraged
by the France midfielder’s
attitude and application
after a summer of heavy scrutiny,
he is confident the player
will be fully focused on the job
in hand.
Also last week’s closing of
the Premier League transfer
window, means there’s
no opportunity to bring in
a replacement.
REMATCH DATE SET
PROMOTER Eddie Hearn says Andy Ruiz
Jr has signed to fight Anthony Joshua in
Saudi Arabia despite speculation he has
not committed to the bout.
The unified world heavyweight champion,
29, has not shared any fight details on social
media since the December 7th rematch was
announced at the end of last week.
His trainer Manny Robles says “there’s a
reason why” Ruiz has kept silent.
Hearn, who promotes Joshua, said: “Both
fighters signed for this fight. The governing
bodies have been informed”.
At a London news conference this week
where neither Joshua or Ruiz were present,
Hearn said the rematch will take place in an
open-air stadium in Diriyah, on the outskirts
of Riyadh.
Madison Square Garden – where Ruiz
stunned Joshua in June – and Cardiff’s Principality
Stadium were picked as likely venues
for the bout, but Ruiz made clear he did not
wish to fight in the UK, while Hearn played
down an immediate return to the USA.
