15 My Lagos Adventure
WELCOME...
Holiday in Nigeria is one that a lot
of people look forward. If you live in
Lagos in particular, with all the hassle
that is common with a mega city, you
just want to take a break from time to
time. Dealing with long hours in
traffic and having to travel long
distances to get to work takes it toil
on one. In the long run, exhaustion
sets in, and our overall well-being is
tampered with.
The two- day-Eid-El-Kabir
celebration last week, following on
the heels of the weekend, afforded
many the opportunity to get deserved rest. We resumed
seeing well-rested and happy faces. There was no doubt the
effect rest had on their well-being.
Getting good rest which includes sleep, eating right and
exercising are great recipe for looking good. But how many
find time to do these? Most celebrities who know that their
market value depend largely on their good looks, go the extra
mile to care for their body. When this is done right, clothes
cheap or expensive just looks right on them.
This week, we profile eleven Nollywood hotties who have
reached the proverbial age of 40. Not only are they fabulous,
but it seems like life has truly begun for them. Our
correspondent,Linda Orajekwe has been on their trail. Who are
they? Flip to pg 5-7
Women who look great just don’t wake up looking so. They
keep a certain lifestyles which becomes their style secret. We
reveal them for free. Pg 4
When these women step out on the red carpet, their beauty
glows. See what beauty regimen they often keep and copy.
Yemisi Suleiman shows you how. Pg 10
On our center spread, read up what Ireland-based Milliner
is doing to get Nigerians party ready in
Dublin and how her side hussle turns her
into an entrepreneur.
This is an edition you’d enjoy. Do so
and have a great Sunday.
FASHION
Stylish Woman’s
Style Secret
By - Jemi Ekunkunbor
Living in Lagos, the fashion capital of Nigeria, opens one to a lot of fashion and
current trend but only a few standout.
To get it right with your style, take a good look from head to toe at those well-dressed
persons who stand out with their style and see what unique element you can copy.
Some habits are however, common to stylish women. Here are some you can adopt.
1. They mix and
match brands
FOLAKE KUYE
- mix and
match
Style is an expression of your inner being
that has nothing to do with price tag.
A stylish woman can create a great look
with both high-end and affordable pieces:
Like a simple ankara dress with a pair of
designer shoes. Therefore, try new brands
and don’t get stuck in style.
2. They Keep
an Organized
Closet
Stylish women keep an organized
closet that allows them to see what
they have and manage their clothes and accessories well.
3. They Have a
Beauty Routine
A stylish woman pays great attention
to little other details other than her
clothes. She ensures her make
up, hair and nails are in tip top
condition. These elements are also updated to
suit each look. Celebrities know this well, and engage it to their
full advantage.
4. They Accessorize
Accordingly
Again, looking stylish is not about that killer dress or one with
heavy price tag ; knowing how to accessorize right to complete
the look is key. Whether its a statement jewellery or bag, let it
complement your outfit.
5. They let clothes fit
them
A stylish woman knows having clothes fit her figure is essential
to looking chic. Understand your body and know what works
well for you and stick with it. Never wear too tight dresses or
skirts or allow the garment bunch up.
6. Go Subtle with
Trends, buy staples
Women who go after trend will find it hard to develop true style.
Stylish know this well and rather, invest in wardrobe staples
like LBD, Courts, leather goods. These items are made to last
and will survive several seasons in the wardrobe.
The Forty &
REPORTAGE
Fabulous In
Nollywood
Words By - Linda Orajekwe
We’ve heard the saying “A fool
at forty is a fool forever” and
that makes the age “40”
feels so final, where
everything comes to a halt, or just takes a
dive downward; but that is not the truth. In
the Nigeria movie industry, many of our
screen divas are hitting that mark already,
with so many 41 and 42-year-olds but while
you think their style would take a break and
conform to our ideal of the 4th floor style,
they’re flowing with their 3rd floor spirit,
changing the style of the 40 to be the new
chic, classy, sophisticated and fabulous
enough for you to look forward to rocking
yours just right.
In this edition, Allure takes a close shot
at some of these screen divas who are 40,
fiercely stylish, and making you believe
without a doubt, that age should not hold
your style hostage. They’re showing you
rather than tell you, that being 40 and
fabulous is not a cliche, but a reality you
should own.
Dakore
Egbuson-
Akande
Dakore Egbuson Akande shot into limelight after
she starred in Final Game. Dakore’s style has
always been one to take note of. Early in her
career when dreadlocks was despised by many,
she made it her signature style and carried it well.
Over time, the actress has gone from locks to
flaunting her natural hair, with a fashion style that
speaks nothing but class. At 41, Dakore seems
to be getting started in Nollywood despite the
tonnes of movies she has to her name. Her work
with Ebonylife films shows the actress portraying
roles of strong women and doing it just right. Her
style in these movies are not so different from her
style in real life; from Isoken to Castle on Castle
down to the recently -released movie, Set Up.
The Maltina brand ambassador makes 40 classy
and look so easy!
Ibinabo
Fiberesima
She is the Nollywood actress and
movie director many Nollywood
lovers grew up watching and
loving for her roles in some of our
favourite movies; Letter to
Strangers, Pastor’s Wife, Most
Wanted and Rivers Between. The
actress has taken a break from
our screen, to become the director
of Miss Earth Nigeria, a beauty
pageant aimed at raising women
to become conscious caretakers
of our dear planet earth. With the
task of taking care of the
environment, the 49-year-old
mother still remains stylish, giving
younger women a run for their
money even while almost at the
door of 50.
Rita
Dominic
Can you remember Rita
Dominic’s style in the ’90s, her big
fro, lipstick and constant role as a
protagonist? Well, this actress
and producer, has reinvented her
character into one of the most
lovable screen divas of our
time. Since the beginning of
her acting career in her role in
the 1998 movie, A Time to
Kil’, this Nollywood actress
has not looked back in
giving us a run for our
money. Her roles in
movies like her style,
have received a
serious upgrade as this
award-winning actress
is consistently making the
Best Dressed list at most red
carpet events.
into the industry in 2006 in a movie titled, Ara.
Since then, the award-winning actress and mother
has become one of the most sought-after Yoruba
actresses. A great dresser, the 41 year old made a
great entrance with her look at the 2016 AMVCA;
stamping her as a fashionista whose name
should be in the style hall of fame if there is
any. Ever since, Mercy Aigbe has retained
that energy, using her social media to show
fans that her red carpet looks are just tips
to how stylish she can really be.
also the founder of Mercy Aigbe
Gentry School of Drama.
Iyabo Ojo
Iyabo Ojo came into Nollywood 1998.
Although she started her movie career
with an English movie, Satanic, in
1998, she made her debut in the
Yoruba movie industry in 2002 with
Baba Darijiwon, where she made her
mark and grew to be the amazing
actress we’ve come to love. This
41-year-old mother of two is not just an
actress, but also a fashion
entrepreneur. Her style is elegant and
with every event, Iyabo Ojo gives us a
new look that takes her up in the style
stakes.
/ August 18, 2019
Omoni Oboli
She is an actress, scriptwriter and filmmaker.
Whether laid back or glamorous, the mother
of three boys always manages to hit the right
mark in a simple yet, sophisticated way that
is worthy of every accolade. This 41-year-old
mother of many hats, continues to showcase
the struggles of women through her femaleled
movies; from Wives on Strike, Okafor’s
Law, Being Mrs. Elliot down to Moms At War,
a movie with another part presently running
in cinema.
Style for Omoni, as we’ve observed, is a
very conscious act, but then again, she nails
it even in times when she’s not conscious
about it.

Funke Akindele-Bello
Funke Akindele is a 41-year-old Ikorodu-born actor and producer, who decided to bring her own seat to the table
when opportunities in Nollywood were limited. This talented actor came on our screen with the then-popular TV
series, I Need To Know in 2002, but became a household name with her brand -Jenifa, a movie she produced in
2008.
Just like her series, her style has also evolved to the smashing looks that grace red carpets every now and then.
The award-winning mediapreneur is presently making her directorial debut with Ebonylife Film’s The Excellency
scheduled to be released in December.
The new mom of a beautiful set of twins continues to show fans and admirers that consistency in one’s craft
can only take them all the way up.
REPORTAGE
Genevieve Nnaji
Award-winning Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji is
one actress that is giving the new kids on the block, a
run for their money with her recent boss moves. The
actress who went on the low for some time, came out
with a bang in 2018 with her movie, Lion Heart, a
project that was big enough to attract international
players like Netflix. This 40-year-old Nollywood star is
not just making boss moves, she’s slaying while at it
and we cannot help but acknowledge that.
Kate Henshaw
Next time when you hear the word, Black don’t
crack, think of this Nollywood actress and fitness
lover, Kate Henshaw. The mother of one came
into Nollywood in 1993 with the movie, When the
Sun Set. Since then, she has tremendously
evolved from the young woman we saw on our
screen acting very conservative roles, to the
social activist we now know who has delved
into the Nigerian politics, back on screen and
now on our mobile phones on social media
showing us healthier options to living life.
Not given to too much, she typifies the
cliche less is more. In her simple classic style,
the award winning-winning native of Cross
Rivers State, knows how to deliver
impeccable looks on and off the red carpet.
Monalisa
Chinda-
Coker
Nigerian movie industry, Monalisa
Cougar, Monalisa Chinda added a
new feather to her hat recently, with
her talk show-Monalisa and I that is
provides a platform where the
41-year-old stylish mother of a
beautiful daughter, shed light on the
challenges faced by people daily.
Her current looks shows that her
stylish ways are not leaving our
screen anytime soon.
Efe Os
INTERVIEW
Turning Pas
Words By -Jemi Ekunkunbor
Ireland- based Milliner; Efe Osobase-Doyle is
an English Language graduate of the Edo
State University, Ekpoma. In search of
greener pasture, the old girl of St. Maria Goretti
Girls Grammar School, Benin City, relocated to
Ireland where she picked up job as a paramedic
after series of different trainings.
She holds a Diploma in several fields; Special
needs, Mental Health Awareness and Level 5 in
Child Development. She also holds a Certificate
in Millinery from Grafton Academy of Fashion,
Dublin.
To make ends meet, she began a side business
that has turned her into an entrepreneur. The
boss of Ddss now sells elegant millinery pieces
with outlets in Ireland and Lagos.
She also hosts a live interactive program on
Critical thinking on Facebook called, “Osobase
Osobase”.
How did you get into the creative industry and why did you
choose millinery?
I was off work for a year due to a car crash I had in 2016. I then
decided to turn to my passion which is making things with my hands.
I chose to do head pieces because; I’ve ways found it difficult tying
gele, our traditional headgear. That was how the Ddss brand was born.
The head pieces are designed to look like the traditional one. Now, that
means I can still have our African gele on, but in a more stylish, chic
and exquisite designs.
How did raise capital to start?
The capital for my brand, Ddss was not big at all because I had
most of the items I needed. I always bought fabrics when I travel on
holidays. So, starting Ddss cost me less than €1,000:00. Although I
may not be making as much as I would have loved, date, I’m still not
making as much as I should but because of the love I have for what I
do, there is no stopping for me.
What inspires you to create?
The beauty in creating and the lack of headwear to complete outfits,
and knowing I have so much to give the fashion world.
What have you done so far to hone your skill?
I try as much as possible to update myself and skills by going on
courses. I have been to Dublin School of Millinery. I have taken online
courses with Hatsacademy.com and Thebritishschoolofmillinery.com,
and of course, Grace’s Hats Nigeria. I also use feedbacks from my
clients to improve on my work.
8 / August 18, 2019
Who is your target market?
My target is every female who wants to look good and stand out in
style and glamour.

INTERVIEW
obase-Doyle:
sion To Business
How are non-Nigerians in your host community
receiving your designs? Do they buy from you?
First, the Ddss brand cuts across cultures, and our
designs are universal. We do have foreigners who
embrace our designs and patronize us. We have clients
from Ireland, America, London, Canada, Italy, Spain etc.
It’s been very encouraging.
How is the party life in the Diaspora?
In Ireland where I live, Africans love to celebrate a lot.
The party life in Ireland is similar to what we have in
Nigeria.
How is life in the diaspora generally?
It’s been great. I came here searching for a place
where the system works. This effective system has given
me jobs that I have earned through my qualifications and
my experience. Because the system works and it is
effective, it helps people like me balance life (living). For
example, if I earn €10 a day, the system here will help me
be able to plan around the €10 and still live comfortably.
The issue of using nepotism to earn a living in the
diaspora is not necessary. You know back home, even if
you work hard, and you come out of school with a Frist
class, and knowing you are the best candidate for the job,
a godfather is still required for you to get the position. It’s
not so here where rules and rights are reinforced and the
future of men and women are guaranteed. If you keep
working hard by studying and obtaining more skills for
yourself, you have every chance to grow; like the saying
that says, “The way you make your bed is the way you lay
on it”. There is no question of me making my bed and
some other person comes to lie on it.
What do you miss most about Nigeria?
What I miss most is the local food vendors called,
“mama put”. You have places all around town where you
can go to eat food that tastes just like home- made meals
if not even better. I miss that easy access to an
assortment of different foods, and the privilege of eating
local organic fruits in their seasons. For all these, I miss
Nigeria.
You just launched a new collection this month. What
kind of pieces do you have in it?
I have actually released two new collections this
period. In putting the collection together, I have used our
Nigeria Aso-Oke in some of them, bamboo sticks in some
with beads, pearls, crinoline and feathers in making the
new collections.
How are Nigerians and those abroad receiving your
new line?
Nigerians living abroad will always be Nigerians,
because we are known for outstanding, elegant and
classy style. So, Nigerians abroad are very willing to have
Ddss pieces in their wardrobes.
The best about Ddss, is that it has different styles and
types that can be worn on any occasion, African or
European.
If you keep
working hard by
studying and
obtaining more
skills for yourself,
you have every
chance to grow.
How would you describe your style?
My style is fresh, elegant and outstanding.
What won’t you do in the name of fashion?
I won’t reveal too much in the name of fashion. I
love keeping it simple and modest without being
indecent.
What are your favourite fashion items?
I have always been a very simple dresser. So, I go
for less loud fashion items because, loud items make
me feel cheap.
My best fashion, items are wrist-watches, bags, and
my Ddss pieces if needed for the day and of course,
perfumes. A lady needs to smell good at all times.
What brands do you like to wear?
I am not fuzzy at all. If it is nice fits nicely, I am good
to go. I am not much of a brand person. I am open to
different brands and designs.
On a special occasion describe your style?
I love special occasions mostly because of the
choice of food, people and their fashion sense and
dance moves. Still, I always like to keep it simple
modest and elegant. I wouldn’t want to be criticized for
over dressing or under dressing. I like to keep my style
simple but elegant works for me.
And on an ordinary day?
On an ordinary day, my style is smart and
comfortable.
How has your style evolved over the years?
My style has changed over the years. I’m older now
so I dress smart, I dress to be comfortable, I wear what
is affordable, and then, I dress for the place, time, and
occasion. Most of all, I dress the way I want to be
addressed by others.
Do you have any piece in your wardrobe you’ll
never stop wearing, no matter how old you are?
Sure I do; my shorts and t- shirts are items I feel so
free in. When I wear them, I feel like a free bird.
What are some favourite pieces in your closet right
now?
My favourite piece of clothing is the lace fabric used
for my traditional marriage. I also treasure my Raymond
Weils Tango watch I got from my husband in year 2000.
Who inspires you in terms of style?
I have admired Liz Benson’’ style from the time I
watched her on Glamour Girls. Her style to me was
simple, classy and modest. She was covered wellcovered
up and looked beautiful without having to show
off so much. The way we dress says a lot about us. Till
date, I follow her and noticed she has not changed one
bit both in her movies and real life. Modesty is my
watch-word when it comes to dressing.
What is the best part about being your age?
To the glory of God, at 43, I feel fulfilled and
comfortable in my skin. I am proud to say I am enjoying
life’s journey so far. My wish now is for me to see every
woman in the world, long to have Ddss for keeps.
Age they say is a number; this to me is not true. The
older you get, the weaker you become. But the one
thing I got while getting older by the day, knows how to
relate with people better, and deal with the
circumstances that come my way. Most importantly, as
I got older, I say it as it is and now put myself first
before anyone. Growing older is a beautiful thing. It
shows you your past and how to correct your future.
What are your favourite beauty items?
My soap, Bubu’s organic fruity black soap scrub,
Jergens ultra healing body lotion, as well as my body
splash/ fragrance, Frist by Van Cleef &Arpels.
FASHION
Sleek Ponytail
For hair, an understated
ponytail can be just as
powerful. A sleek look like Toni
Tones, is perfect for the red
carpet, as long as you keep
the roots looking fresh.
Side and centre part
hairstyle with voluminous
curls are another
favourite on the red
carpet. However, it is
pertinent to take the
shape of your face into
consideration before
opting for any of these
two.
Clear Skin:
Cleanse,
Moisturize and
Exfoliate
Firstly, for red carpet glam, the skin
has to be gorgeous and glowing.
You can not have a beautiful
makeup on a dirty skin. The basic
steps to beautiful, clear skin is
to cleanse, moisturise daily and
exfoliate once or twice a week to
remove dead skin cells, revealing
fresh, new, glowy skin hiding
underneath.
Again, it is important to use highquality
skin care products according
to your skin type and follow this
basic regimen.
Red Carpet
Beauty
By - Yemisi Suleiman
It is no secret that it takes a lot of
work, and a good glam squad to
get celebrities red-carpet ready.
And while it is always good to
know how to recreate an hairstyle
or achieve an A-list worthy smokey
eye, there are some tips to note to
help achieve that red carpet glow.
By using the right skincare
products and a few key makeup
items, you can get similarly
gorgeous red carpet looks, just like
your favourite celebrities.
Looks
Shimmery Eyes
Let your eyes shine with shimmery
shadow. Choose a shade that is close to
your natural skin tone.
This way, the effect is less like makeup
and more like a sexy, sparkling second
skin. Finish up with a few swipes of black
mascara and you are good to glow.
Nail Detail
A tacky toenail is the last thing one may think of
when prepping for a major red carpet, but that is
also the kind of thing photographers zoom in on.
Get your nails well groomed and polished with
added bling for the red carpet.
/ August 18, 2019
Add some highlights
Even the most glowing complexion can always
benefit from a little extra boost. Get it with
highlighter. After putting on foundation, apply a
highlighter on the top of your cheekbones, above
the outer corners of your brows, down the center of
your nose, and dotted in your cupid’s bow. If you’re
wearing a strappy dress or top, you can even
swipe a little on your shoulders and collarbone.
The glimmer will catch the light beautifully whether
you are posing for the paparazzi, or just taking
a selfie. For a really glam look, go for a bold lip.
Matte lips are a big trend on the red carpet. They
add an extra glow to your look.
Well groomed
eyebrows
Bold brows continue to dominate the red
carpets, beacuse a full brow that is slightly
darker than your natural brows, helps frame
the face. Otherwise, brows can fade out in
the flash of a photo. To achieve this look, try
a brow pencil or brush to help fill in gaps and
brush hair into place so it stays.
Great brows will add immediate dimension
and help to sculpt the face, but keeping the
look natural is key.

Reasons Women Age Faster Than Men
Aging is a natural aspect of the human life. As
we age, our skin over time will start to sag and
wrinkle, turning the once toned body of our
younger years, into a lined map of age.
Men and women age differently; and clearly,
genetics, lifestyle, nutrition and environment
affect how the people of either gender age.
However, the rate or space at which this aging
occurs is entirely different.
All over in the World, it is assumed that
women live longer than men. The reason being
that the male folks often engage in competitive,
dangerous, reckless chores, and tend to have
dangerous careers like, being in the armed
forces. Another explanation includes, the fact that
ladies have the tendency to seek professional
help as regard health than guys. Whichever way,
the bottom line is that women live years longer
than men.
Making love and aging varies for men and
women. The Female body responds to aging
dramatically with menopause while that of the
male body, responds more gradually. Aging
affects the different hormones of the human body.
For ladies, estrogen and aging are a great
concern especially during menopausal stage and
after. This is when women stop menstruating and
the ovaries stop producing the hormone
estrogen, with common symptoms or side effects
such as, hot flashes, fatigue, vaginal dryness and
low sex drive. While for men, testosterone and
aging are the dominant hormonal component of
aging. It does not bring on sudden changes as it
does for women. Theirs are more gradual, with
decrease in testosterone over time- a process
called Andropause could lead to erectile
dysfunction, reduce sex drive, and also, bring
about changes in sleeping patterns. Unlike
menopause which ends fertility in females, men
can actually still reproduce and create sperm well
in to old age.
Brain aging differs for guys and ladies.
Overweight men who are diagnosed with
diabetes, or have had a stroke, are more likely to
suffer from cognitive impairment. Women on the
other hand, are more likely to suffer from
cognitive impairment if they were dependent on
others for daily tasks, and lack a strong social
network.
The middle age stage is the real struggle, with
gradual lean muscles loss after age thirty. Men
and women tend to gain weight differently.
According to NIH, men usually gain weight until
their mid- 50s when their weight starts to drop off;
again, often due to drops in testosterone, which
sustains muscle. With the women gaining weight
for an extra decade until 65, then they start to lose
weight too, often due to muscle loss.
It is a well- known fact that the beauty industry,
targets women with variety of anti-aging, antiwrinkle,
pro-youth creams and serums, due to
societal pressures to remain youthful. According
to the International Dermal Institute, male skin
really is less susceptible to the signs of aging.
Men’s testosterone levels actually help thicken
their skin, making it 25 percent thicker. Men also
have more collagen density, a slightly rougher
texture and more naturally moisture to their skin
because, they typically sweat more and have
more lactic acid in their sweat. So ladies are more
likely to use sun protection on their faces, as
many women’s skincare products like
moisturizers and even foundations, come with
SPF built in.
At some point, both ladies and guys will lose
some hair as they age. This depends on
hormones and genetics but, baldness affects
more males than females. It has been estimated
that half of all men, show some hair loss by the
time they reach 50; that of hereditary hair loss
usually happens by 40. Women though very rare,
can also have pattern of baldness, generally what
they experience is thinning or finer hair.
While both genders can grow old and become
centenarians, the possibility of getting to this age
is higher with women than men. The take-home
message here is that, men who make it to
hundred, are much more likely to be ‘’lucky’’ than
women, who seem to be able to endure long–
term illnesses better.
Aging should be desired with lines of pride
drawn into the skin, leaving behind wrinkle scars.
Papaya:
Otherwise known as pawpaw, this fruit
is high in the papain, and enzyme that
helps to remove dead skin cells and skin
impurities. The fruit also has antioxidants
in it which give the skin a brightening
effect. Drink a glass of papaya milk
everyday and also apply it directly to your
skin for added benefits.
CARROTS:
Carrots are rich in
vitamin A which helps
give radiance to the skin.
Carrots like papaya are high
in carotene which helps to
protect your skin against the
sun. This sun protective factor of
carotene will also help reduce the
appearance of age spots and dark
patches. Eating enough carrots
will give your skin a radiant glow
Foods That Can
Brighten Your Skin
Naturally
By - Tobi Ayodele Keeney
Lime/LEMON:
Lime, lemon and other citrus fruits are very high
in vitamin C, an antioxidant that gives your skin that
radiant glow we all crave. Vitamin C visibly brightens
the skin and removes age spots and dark patches.
Aim for at least 2000mg of vitamin c a day and that
be achieved by drinking lemon water, and eating a lot
of oranges and other citrus fruit. Also try mixing the
juice of a lime in water and apply it to you skin as a
mist every day before bed. Doing this can actually
bleach away black spots and other blemishes.
Green Peas:
This vegetable contains a high amount of zinc, a
mineral that is very good for achieving clear skin. Zinc
keeps your skin free from blemishes, has anti- aging and
antioxidant properties which contribute to glowing skin.
Aim for eating at least a cup of cooked green beans a day.
/ August 18, 2019
Many people especially women
go through great lengths to
achieve glowing skin. We spent
a considerable amount on
creams, soaps and gels with
some people going through
drastic lengths such as taking
skin lightening injections. Did
you know that what you eat can
also affect your skin tone and
texture? Let us explore 7 foods
that can be used to achieve
glowing skin.
Nuts and Seeds:
Nuts and seeds such as cashews, almonds and
sunflower seeds are also very good for the skin.
They provide your skin with vitamin E which helps
to hydrate your skin and keeps it hydrated. Aim
for eating at least 23 almonds a day or its
equivalent in other nuts and seeds.
Yogurt:
Yogurt contains probiotics which are useful
in bringing down inflammation. This is very
useful in keeping away breakout outs and
pimples. In addition, the lactic acid found in
yogurt is considered an alpha hydroxy acid
(AHA) and is good for resurfacing the skin and
giving the skin a brightening effect. Drink a glass
of yogurt every day or mix with honey and apply
directly to the skin for 10 minutes as a mask.
I
n conclusion, the key points to note
here are antioxidants and sun
protection. Protecting your skin from
the harmful effects of the sun will
prevent premature aging and dark
spots. Antioxidants give your skin a
radiance that can’t be matched by any
lightening or toning cream in the
market and the best way to achieve
glowing skin is to start from within. If
you are having a rough time with
adding these to your diet, take
individual supplements that contain
high amounts of these vitamins and
minerals. Have a healthy week!

Eid Mubarak to all my Muslim brothers and sisters! What
a wonderful long weekend we all enjoyed. I may have
thought about being a little sad last Sunday when not one
invitation to come and eat Salah meat came my way. My antisocial
ways caught up with me with a vengeance. By Tuesday
however, all was well in my world when I had received not
one, but, two gratefully accepted meat deliveries.
It’s all about the little pleasures.
This is Oddbod and the City – My Lagos Adventure.
MY LAGOS
ADVENTURE
...Oddbod & The City
Pimms cup
Moscow Mule
For those of us who stayed
on this side of the Sahara
for the summer, there is
nothing that brings more
joy than your friend in
the overs who is heading
back asking, “Can I bring
you back anything?”
I always try to behave
myself; after all, requesting for
half the Boots beauty department,
and all the contents of Sainsbury’s seems
a bit ungracious. But about five years ago,
I noticed that my favourite summer tipple,
Pimm’s, was no longer easily available in
Lagos. So, this is my number one request.
It is considered the quintessential British
summer cocktail. Luckily for us, it’s hot all
year around so we get to enjoy it when we
choose. I love to make a big jug of it when
the girls come around. Thankfully, all the
remaining ingredients are easily available
in Lagos.
The Pimm’s Cup
Ingredients
• 1 3/4 oz. Pimm’s No.1
• 5 oz. lemonade (Sprite or 7UP will do)
• Mint
• 1 orange
• 3 strawberries (feel free to omit this if
you can’t find it. It will make no discernible
difference)
• 1 cucumber
Directions
According to the instructions on the bottle,
“pile all the ingredients in a tall glass, mix
This next drink
I am going
to share with
you, I was
introduced to
by my friend’s
husband. He
whipped it together in
his East London kitchen
and threw it into some sexy
copper mugs. I must admit,
I was so enchanted by the
whole affair, I spent the rest
of that holiday trying to find
Moscow Mule mugs to bring
back. I failed in my mission.
So, if anybody knows where
one could find some locally, I
am still on the hunt.
Moscow Mule
Ingredients
• 2 oz. vodka
• 1/2 oz. lime juice, freshly
squeezed
• 6 oz. ginger beer
Directions
Squeeze lime juice into a
Moscow Mule mug and drop in
the spent shell.
Add some ice, pour in the
vodka and fill with cold ginger
beer. A simple and refreshing
cocktail.
Studio Imo
Temple Muse just launched an innovative capsule collection
from boutique design label, Studio Imo, founded by Edwin Okolo
and Imobong Emah. The collection is made up of beautiful dresses
created with the brands signature crochet technique.
I had the opportunity to speak with Edwin to get some more insight
into the collection.
Edwin has no formal fashion training and crocheting, speaking
eloquently about his strong emotional connection to the skill taught by
his great aunt.
“All the women in my family are creative with their hands and this
just felt like a tradition I was carrying forward” he told me. “I enjoy the
technicality of the process and I love the versatility of crochet. I love
how it drapes, I love how it looks and I love how it feels.”
The collection is called,‘The Girl’s Armoury for Hunting and Fishing,’
inspired by Edwin’s favourite novel by Melissa Bank. In the book, the
protagonist Jane Rosenal embarks on a transitional journey into selfawareness,
and this collection represented the different parts of her
journey.
The white dresses characterize the first half of the book. Some are
demure and others more adventurous, to represent her struggle with
loss of innocence and testing of boundaries. The second half of the
collection, contains bursts of colours that denote experimentation and
trying new things.
Each dress is hand made by Edwin himself, and can take anything
up to five days to create.
When asked who the Studio Imo woman is, he responded: “She is
classic. She wants classic silhouettes, she understands technicality
and design, she values fabrication and creation, she appreciates a
dress that has been made well and with her in mind.”
