Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades 120
7
Switch It On!
More and more of us have to take our work
with us wherever we go. Some companies
expect you to still be contactable, at least via
email, and if you run your own business you
are likely to be checking in on a regular basis.
For those who are retired, or are granted a full
two weeks off work, you’ll probably still want to
access the internet, be it to update social
media, to check in via email, or to catch up with
the news and sport back home.
So, when we get ready for a trip abroad, we dig
out our spare laptop that we only use when
travelling. Off we trot, knowing there is WiFi
available in our destination, and we have our
adapter plugs so power will not be an issue. We
can send those documents we promised to our
clients, or the photos we have been taking, once
we are in the hotel bar, not a problem….
Except, when did you last turn your spare
computer on? You may have kept all your
software updated on your main computer, but
any other devices that you use which haven’t
been online for a while won’t be up to date.
Switch on the spare machine and it may well
refuse to co-operate if there are too many
updates pending. The hotel WiFi may not be
good enough for those updates to be
downloaded and you could be well and truly
snookered.
September’s advice then is to plan ahead,
whether you be travelling for work or pleasure.
If you have more than one computer, make sure
you schedule some time at home before you
travel to ensure it has all the updates it will
require to enable you to use it when you need
it.
Bridgeford’s Best Bites
25
Psoas Muscles
Pronounced 'SOAS' and together with related 'sister' muscle
the ilacus, also called the iliopsoas. They are major hip flexors
and connectors between the torso and the legs, affecting posture
and spinal stability while sitting and in movement.
They consist of both fast and slow twitch muscles fibres and are
involved in all types of movement from active sports and dance
to sitting in the chair or lounging around. They move the legs
towards the torso when the torso is fixed (leg lifts, walking up
stairs, running) and the torso towards the legs when the legs are
fixed (sit-ups). They flex the trunk to bend forwards and pick
something up. Imbalance in the psoas muscles can create overcompensation
in other muscles and cause low back, pelvic and
groin pain.
Anatomy: They are the deepest core muscles, about 16 inches
long and the only muscles that connect the spine and the legs.
They attach to either side of the spine at the front on the transverse
processes of the 12 thoracic vertebra, 5 lumbar vertebrae
and intervertebral discs, passing through the pelvis to
attach to the medial lesser trochanter of the femur. Their nerve
supply is from lumbar 1-3. They attach to the spine next to the
crurae, the tendons of the diaphragm, with the medial arcuate
ligaments wrapping around the top of each psoas muscle. They
provide support for the internal organs and their movement
with the diaphragm encourages fluid flow. There are deep fascial
connections between the psoas, diaphragm, other hip muscles,
the pelvic organs and the spine. The diaphragm basically
attaches directly or indirectly to all organs.
Breath and Emotions: Psoas connections to the diaphragm, connects
them to the breath and emotions. When we are startled
or stressed (fight, flight or freeze) we hold our breath, the diaphragm
contracts and so does psoas. Continued stress causes
continued contracted psoas, contributing to low back pain. During
later pregnancy, pressure on the diaphragm can cause
breathlessness; due to the psoas diaphragm connection, releasing
psoas can help to ease the breathing. Balanced psoas function
is important in the birth process, encouraging a smoother
2ⁿ stage.
Symptoms: You may have a leg length difference, rotated pelvis,
knee and back pain, postural problems; there may be an impact
on organs, affecting bowel movements, menstrual cramps, difficulty
to breathe fully and feeling exhausted. Tightness of the
psoas can result in spasms in the back or lower back pain by
compressing the discs. Hypertonic, inflamed psoas can irritate
and entrap the iliolingual and iliohypogastric nerves that branch
off 1 lumbar nerve, causing a sensation of heat or water running
down the front of the thigh. With both psoas muscles tight,
the lower back will tend to arch back in a lordosis; tightness on
one side will cause a lean to the side of the tightness, often
causing symptoms of sciatica into the butt and down the leg. A
typical result of psoas tightness or spasm is that you lean forward
and get stuck and also find it difficult to get up straight,
particularly first thing in the morning. As a deep core muscle,
imbalance in one or both psoas muscles can affect our ability to
activate our core strength properly and thus have an impact on
any incontinence issues.
Causes: Many situations can cause the psoas muscles to contract:
long periods of stress, sitting for a long time, excessive exercise,
including walking and running, a lot of sit ups, sleeping in
the foetal position, prolonged bad posture, injury, laying in bed
too long with an existing back problem. Awkward movements
involving heavy or repeated lifting and also twisting, such as digging,
moving heavy, awkward objects, etc. Dehydration can impact
the psoas muscles due to their physical connection with the
kidneys as well as the overall impact on muscles. The demands
of a changing body during pregnancy can affect the psoas muscles
and it is important to keep them balanced to aid a smooth
delivery as possible.
Diagnosis: Psoas problems are often misdiagnosed as they can
present with symptoms of sciatica and disc problems. If your
symptoms are severe enough to take you to the doctor or hospital,
you may have X-rays, MRI and neurological examinations
and even though your pain is real, things can appear 'normal'.
Osteopathic/Manual Management: Osteopathic diagnosis includes
neurological, orthopaedic and movement testing as well
as a detailed case history to determine possible cause. Using
muscle testing, where appropriate and palpation to 'listen' to
the body with 'thinking feeling fingers' to determine the cause
and extent of the problem and best course of treatment for the
individual. Treatment may include stretching, deep soft tissue
work, myofascial techniques, adjusting/manipulation, dry needling,
home rehabilitation exercises; attention to postural habits,
appropriate exercise and ergonomics. Stress aspects will be
considered both physically, biochemically and with various relaxation
and breathing exercises where appropriate.
We are happy to advise you on your health matters.
Local Animal Support Group
29
Karen Lippitt, founder of Helping Paws tells us about their work
I suppose everyone has a passion and mine happens to be
animals.
Since the 1970’s I have been involved with tourism, specifically
in Portugal and inevitably that led me to helping stray and
abandoned animals whenever I was there.
In 2013 I started Helping Paws www.helpingpaws.co.uk which
is an animal support group. We raise money for animals in
need all over the world and of course, here in the UK. Since I
started, we have raised more than £300,000 all of which has
gone directly to the animals.
Last year I made the slightly scary decision to massively reduce
my hours at work so that I could spend more time helping
animals. I didn’t have the means to do this without earning
some extra money so earlier this year I started Help4paws. I
am a qualified dog behaviourist, Reiki practitioner, animal
healer and animal communicator so I decided to do all those
things plus, feeding and cuddling cats when the owners are on
holiday.
I don’t think I have ever worked so hard but I am loving every
moment of it. To be spending most of my days working with
animals and really making a difference to their lives is so
fulfilling.
I live in Rottingdean so look after cats throughout the Deans
area. The dog behaviour work and animal healing is bespoke
and I always have a detailed consultation with the owners
before deciding if it is best to see the animal in its own home,
outside, or here in my lovely little house.
Animal healing is amazing – I have been asked if perhaps Reiki
works because of the placebo effect but you can’t fool an
animal and to see a nervous, frightened or sick animal relax
and release their tension really is a miracle. Of course, it can’t
cure illness, that is the vets job but it can help them in so many
ways and I am always privileged to be asked to help.
I have two rescue dogs of my own and they both love the
company of other dogs. I don’t have time to be a regular dog
walker but I do offer an occasional walking service. I will only
ever take care of one families dogs though, not big groups and
in all cases I walk the dogs on a long line, not off lead, I have
seen and heard too many horror stories!
My fundraising for Helping Paws takes up so much time and I
am always asking for donations of good quality items that we
can sell, either in our online auctions or at our regular
fundraising events.
If you would like to get involved with Helping Paws, or would
like more details of my bespoke pet care please give me a call
on 07818 402771 or email me kaz2460@hotmail.co.uk
I am fully insured and CRB checked.
Friends of Beacon Hill
Beacon Hill Nature Reserve
Diary of a Butterfly Watcher on Beacon Hill by Peter
Whitcomb
5 July - With the flora and butterflies at their peak now is the
time to visit our wonderful Reserve. In spite of little sun, it was
warm and humid and today's butterfly count was well above
the 200 mark with 11 species noted. The attractive Marbled
White outnumbered Meadow Brown.
24 July - With heatwave conditions I experimented with an
early 9.30am start this morning. I usually do my butterfly
transects around midday or early afternoon. There were a few
surprises - no Marbled White, but I was pleased with 3 Wall
Brown and 2 Dark Green Fritillary and the first Common Blue
from their second brood. Gatekeeper came out on top with
84, a fall to only 25 Meadow Brown and an overall total of
149. I noted a few plants now in flower including Burnet
Saxifrage, Wild Parsnip, Marjoram, St John's Wort and Melilot.
26 July - I left home in Hollingdean with an optimistic look at
the weather, but on arriving at Beacon Hill the breeze had
strengthened and there was more cloud than sun. Fickle
weather and a count of just over 100 butterflies. However
there are always things to look out for here and I was pleased
to find the first Wasp Spider of the season - a very small one
and a very small web. Also a discovery of a new plant species,
Wild Basil, not unusual on chalk downland but not recorded
here in the past. One of the largest hoverflies - Volucella
inanis and a Sulphur Pearl (the first record of this white moth
for the reserve) - so all in all a successful walkabout.
3 August - It was good to see an increase in numbers of
Painted Lady, Common Blue and Small Heath with their
second flights now emerging. The full list was as follows: 27
Meadow Brown, 19 Common Blue, 16 Small Heath, 15
Gatekeeper, 10 Small White, 6 Painted Lady, 5 Wall including a
mating pair, and single Small Skipper, Red Admiral, Comma
and Speckled Wood. The total was 102. The euonymus bushes
alongside Blind Veterans were smothered in various species of
hoverfly. A charm of about 30 Goldfinches were seed feeding.
Friends of Beacon Hill will be back working in September. We
meet for a 2 hour session on the 2ⁿ Tuesday and 4 Friday of
each month, 10AM at the picnic benches at the south end of
the Nature Reserve. Please join us in sturdy footwear,
gardening gloves and, if you have them bring secatuers. We
always look forward to having new members so come along
and join in the conservation conversation.
Due to public demand we have added 2 extra dates for
September : Thursday 26 and Saturday 28.
Mike Laslett
There’s a Small
Hotel…
…is a familiar Rogers and Hart song which appeared in
more than one musical.
I have previously mentioned the two major Hotels in the
area, The White Horse and The Royal Oak but there
were many other smaller hotels, including Tudor Close
Hotel, for which Charles Neville was responsible.
The archives of the Rottingdean Preservation Society are
constantly being added to, especially when people clear
out family papers. Please contact me if you have any
items you may wish to donate. I was grateful to receive
the invoice and receipt relating to the honeymoon of
John and Norma Lines at Tudor Close Hotel in March
1940.Their three night stay cost £6 15s 6d at a nightly
rate of two guineas, plus such extras as two shillings
(10p) for wine and the same nightly fee for garaging, indicating
that they must have come by car from their
home in Sydenham. Note the stamp bearing the words
“Postage Revenue” on the receipt, which was a tax on
transactions requiring a receipt.
The Dene was at one time known as Elm Lodge and was
the riding establishment for Lord St Vincent. From 1877
it was home of Edward Ridsdale who was in charge of
the Royal Mint when it was at the Tower of London. One
of his daughters, Lucy, married Stanley Baldwin, The
Dene later became a hotel before becoming the current
residential home. During it’s time as a hotel the Verger’s
instructions for christenings at St. Margaret’s Church
included the note;
“Before the Baptism in the afternoon, hot water is usually
fetched in the brass can from the Dene Hotel.”
Some of the other smaller establishments included Olde
Place Hotel/Motel, at and behind the Rottingdean Club.
See us online at www.deansmagazine.co.uk

41
In 1968 you could attend a dinner and dance at The
Dene Hotel every Saturday evening for 30/- (£1.50 in today’s
money!)
Like The Dene, The White House in Saltdean is no longer
a hotel and is now a Nursing Home.
14 Ashdown Avenue was once a nursing home before
reverting to private residence. However, it is alleged
that it too served as a hotel in earlier days but none of
us have been able to find evidence to this effect. If you
have any information please contact me via the magazine
- info@deansmagazine.co.uk
Guests at The Kittiwake Hotel, which was on the coast
road just west of the Lido, could use the steep steps to
reach the beach when they stayed for 3 or 4 guineas a
week. Though the hotel no longer exists you can just
make out the Kittiwake name in the concrete wall.
A Good & Effective
Summer For NHW
Summer fairs are over for another year. We took our
promotional stall to four fairs and had good weather at them
all!
Attending fairs gives us a great opportunity not only to
promote Neighbourhood Watch and encourage residents to
become members, but also to listen to residents’ concerns and
problems and chat about general topics.
So many people came to the stall and spoke to us and it was
good to hear from many of them how appreciative they were
with our efforts to help keep the community a happy and safe
place to live. Members of the committee are all volunteers
and it is good to hear that our work is appreciated. We were
able to give many people advice on simple, practical ways of
keeping their property and themselves safe and secure.
One of the general causes of concern was parking and
speeding. We are now able to carry out four Community
Speed Watch sessions a month in roads, approved but the
Police, in Saltdean, Rottingdean and Ovingdean. However, if
we had more volunteers it would mean we could carry out
even more sessions.
If you have concerns about speeding in your area, please let us
know and if you care about your community and would like to
know more about becoming a Community Speed Watch
volunteer please do contact us.
This summer we have not only attended the fairs but also have
spent two evenings with the Saltdean Cub packs and all had a
great time! We are very much looking forward to carrying out
another Junior Neighbourhood Watch 6 week after school club
at Saltdean Primary School during the Autumn/Winter months.
The school are extremely happy to welcome us back.
Autumn/Winter security poses different problems than during
the summer months and in future articles we will give
information on how you can keep safe and happy!!
If you are not already a member of this successful NHW, then
please get in touch and join us.
Local Piano Teacher
51
Rachael Emily
No one ever said: "I regret learning to play the piano!"
Learning to play music has been proven to increase focus,
reduce stress, build confidence, and improve concentration.
On top of all that, it's fun! Playing an instrument is a lifelong
skill that gives so much pleasure.
Rachael first started teaching piano lessons on the south coast
in 2010, having previously taught music in secondary schools
in Essex and Kent. Whilst Rachael teaches a lot of school-age
students, she also loves to teach adults, including complete
beginners. Her studio's philosophy is to promote the
enjoyment of music: listening, performing, and as a method of
expression.
● a GP by profession who wanted to play My Heart Will Go
On to her husband on their wedding day
● a 5-yr old who wants to be the next Elton John
● a stroke victim who found piano playing to help regain
motor skills
● many 6yr olds who want to play Little Mix songs or Baby
Shark!
● a 45-yr old beginner student who wanted to play pop
songs at a local open mic night
● a father and daughter who wanted to take lessons for
something to do together
● a 60-yr old student who survived cancer and wanted a
new hobby in life
● a house music producer who wanted to improve
keyboard skills
● a middle-aged student who used music to help cope with
mental health issues
● a professional singer who needed to learn the piano to
take a music teaching job
● a mum-of-four who wanted to try the challenge of piano
grade exams as something to do for herself.
Lessons take place on Longridge Avenue, Saltdean, or in your
own home.
Whatever your goal is, get in touch to get started!
www.PianoLessonsBrighton.com
The path for every student is different: some like to play pop
music, some like to play classical. Some students want to
learn how to make up their own songs, or improvise over a
chord sequence. Some students enjoy taking exams, but
many want to play for their own pleasure.
Here is a small selection of some of Rachael's students and
their goals over recent years:
● a teenager taking theory exams for extra UCAS points for
university
● an 80-yr old wanting to write his own musical
In March this year our local history article covered the
Hazelcar, Britain’s first mini car, the owner of one of the
cars featured in the article heard about it and bought
the vehicle to show people at the Rottingdean Fair in
early August. Luckily Mike Laslett our local historian was
on the scene to capture this picture for us.
Time to Talk Befriending
Have you heard of befriending? Could you help to make a
difference?
Befriending Charlotte (aged 89) by Harriet (aged 33) (Volunteer
Befriender at Time to Talk Befriending)
Whenever I’m asked what it’s like to be part of Time to Talk
Befriending I always want to get across that it is hugely rewarding
to be “part of the solution to loneliness and making an impact on
someone’s life”. However, personally I don’t feel like I’m giving up
anything to spend time with Charlotte who I have been visiting for
3 years now, or that its even a charitable thing! The duality of the
benefits to the be-friendship is just as important in my life as it is
for Charlotte. There is something underrated about simply making
time to sit and have a face to face chat, no technology, no mutual
gossip but a connection stripped back to basics of wanting to have
a real and quality connection with another human being. I have a
hunch that if we dug into why people volunteer as befrienders it
would show that we (volunteers) are looking for company in just as
much the same way as the members are. Whilst it’s not necessarily
loneliness in the conventional sense that is driving us to volunteer,
with the increase of isolation in society, I think the work Time to
Talk Befriending do and their befriending model will become
increasingly important in society in recognising the value of
connection. I can’t recommend befriending enough so if you have
an hour to give once a week or once a fortnight please contact the
team on 01273 737710 / volunteers@tttb.org.uk /
www.tttb.org.uk/volunteers/ for further details. Especially if you
live in the Saltdean area!
Fishermen’s Friends (Cert
Tuesday 24th September
I hope that you had a good summer. If you missed
going away, here’s your chance to sample a bit of
delightful Cornwall and listen to some familiar sea
shanties at the same time.
English folk has a history of regional variation and the
Cornish tradition is well represented in this lighthearted
and easy-going British comedy.
You may have seen some of the plot devices before
and you will certainly be familiar with the songs. Feel
free to sing along to ‘What Shall We Do With The
Drunken Sailor?’, etc. No prizes for best voice this
time around. Cornwall is the unsung star of the film,
reminding us of our own idyllic days in one of
England’s best-loved regions.
In 2010, a Cornish all-male folk ensemble released an
album of sea shanties that reached number 9 in the UK
chart. As quirky inspirational stories go, it’s hardly up
there with ‘Calendar Girls’, but it has nonetheless been
puréed into a double helping of feel-good mush. In real
life, the Fisherman’s Friends were discovered by radio
DJ Johnnie Walker, during a holiday to the fishing village
of Port Isaac: a tale that lends itself more naturally
to an item on breakfast TV than an entire feature film.
Writers Meg Leonard, Piers Ashworth and Nick
Moorcroft have reworked it into a formulaic comedy
of opposites, with an obligatory town mouse/country
mouse romance on the side. In the fictionalised version,
the group are initially signed as a practical joke,
after a braying record label executive (Noel Clarke) and
his jaundiced A&R man Danny (Daniel Mays) watch
them playing a harbourside gig during a stag weekend
on the coast.
The prank doesn’t seem to serve much of a purpose,
beyond wasting the label’s own time and money, but
gives the film an excuse to strand Danny in their picturesque
village for what feels like weeks on end, as he
starts to believe the band’s froth-tossed harmonies of
yore might connect with a modern crowd. As such, he
has to persuade the 10 singers to give stardom a crack,
starting with their sceptical alpha-baritone Jim (a very
good James Purefoy), whose daughter Alwyn (Tuppence
Middleton) becomes another good reason for
Danny to persuade the locals that he’s the real deal.
Director Chris Foggin has assembled a talented and
likeable cast, as the ruddy-cheeked chanteurs; and the
film is shot on location in the relentlessly spectacular
north Cornwall.
Hapless heroes and underdogs are what inspires us to
root for characters in fiction. There is plenty of rooting
to be done here. ‘Fisherman’s Friends’ is awash with
romantic interest that goes wrong; misunderstandings
that almost bring about the capsizing of the local pub;
and turbulent seas that threaten the success of our
singers, as the commercial realities of the London
music scene hit them amidships. All seems at stake at
the mercy of the ensuing storm. Man the lifeboats,
me boys - and as Bette Davis once said, in ‘All About
Eve’: “it’s going to be a bumpy night”.
Adapted from Robbie Collin’s review in The
Telegraph.
Next month, ‘All is True’, starring Kenneth Branagh &
Judy Dench … and watch out for our Christmas charity
special ‘The White Crow’, December 10, at the end of
the season.

Lions News
Our Lion President, Geoff Rhodes, was pleased to open our
2019 Saltdean Gala. It was held on another exceptional
summer’s day. The doggies did us proud as we had another
record breaking dog show. There were 70 entries on the day.
Congratulations to all involved. Also, the tug-of-war
competition was great fun again along with the popular
family races. On behalf of the Lions I would like to thank
everyone involved in the Gala and all who came along to
support and take part. We will have to do it all again next
year!
With the sad closure of Autism Sussex, we are pleased to
report that Hillside have informedus that once building works
have been completed at their upper school site, the Sensory
Room equipment, that we originally provided for Autism
Sussex and has now been transferred to Hillside, will be
opened. This is great news for the community, ensuring this
vital facility can continue to be used. Hillside (Hill Park School –
Lower Site) is a special school in Brighton that caters for young
people, amongst others, with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
medication or allergies. While focused on more vulnerable
people, the scheme can benefit anyone in the event of an
accident or sudden illness at home. All you have to do is to
complete a form with your name, medicines, allergies and
relatives’ contact details and put the form in the bottle. Then
you put the bottle in your fridge. You will also be given two
green stickers. Put one green sticker on the outside of the
fridge door and the other one on the inside of your house door
so the paramedics know there is a bottle in the fridge. If you
would like more details please get in touch – see details below.
If you would like more information on any of our service or
fundraising activities or would like to lodge an interest in
helping us at our fundraising events please contact
In conjunction with Brighton Lions we are also pleased to a
support a local Girl Guide to attend a forthcoming
International Camp. A note of thanks received from the Guide
showed what a fantastic development opportunity this trip will
be.
Please don’t forget that on 20 October we have our popular
Sponsored Swim at Roedean School Pool. The swim is held
annually to raise money for local charities. Groups, through
entered teams of any size, raise funds by obtaining
sponsorship with the proceeds being split between their own
choice of charity or good cause and Lions’ charities; once again
this year the Lions’ principal beneficiary will be Chestnut Tree
House Children’s Hospice. Teams swim for one hour with the
aim of swimming as many lengths as possible. Please make
contact soon if you would like to enter a team as we would like
to see as many teams as possible enter to support the charities
and your chosen good cause. The deadline for entries is Friday
11 October but we ask if you could notify us as soon as you
can if it is your intention to enter: contact details below.
The Saltdean Youth Club, held on Friday evenings in Saltdean
United Football Clubhouse, has attracted children from around
our area and is going from strength to strength. We were
therefore, pleased to help them raise £649 for a new table
football, by their own efforts with stalls at our fairs topped up
by a donation from us.
While on the service front, the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions
supported Message in a Bottle initiative continues to be taken
up widely. This scheme aims to ensure that vital information
can be easily found when it is needed most. A simple idea
designed to encourage people to keep essential personal and
medical details on a standard form and in a common place –
the fridge! This saves the emergency services valuable time if
they need to enter a property in an urgent situation by both
helping to establish your identity, and notifying any special
Pain Therapist
Penny Koster
Myofascial Release - the gentle release of
connective tissue, I have a beautiful log cabin in
my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly
relaxing and gentle space.
I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot
of different qualifications and training, but the
therapy I am most passionate about and know
first‐hand works completely is myofascial release,
Myo-fascial is the connective tissue which joins
everything together, covers everything, fills all the
gaps holds you together, it has the memory of
your life, it relays messages to your brain faster
than the nervous System, every single thing that
happens to you in your life whether it be good or
bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial
system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of
collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers
you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your
skin, it moves constantly within your body, it
penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle,
ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are
fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone
hard and dehydrated, that is why generally
women get more lower back problems then men
because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and
end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated
and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and
consequently pulls on areas like the lower back,
fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop
moving and therefore cause problems,
discomfort, pain, disease for many many different
reasons I generally call it life. Another example
because we are one complete unit everything is
connected you could have a pain in your shoulder
and the pain could possibly originate in your lower
back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial
release is being called the missing link and I
passionately believe this to be true, I believe in
the not too distant future everyone will be having
these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is
the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer
that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated,
no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step
on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly
trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body
read to know where the problem is and then to
un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about
this treatment! I feel very passionately that
everyone should understand how it works, and as
much as possible be able to do it to themselves
and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have
that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs
to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg
or have an accident et cetera, I give these
treatments which are extremely powerful but at
the Same time very gentle, I also educate people
so that they can self-care in the future and when
they have a pain they understand why it's
happening, and what they can do about it,
ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN.
Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer
than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT!
If you're interested in having a treatment and
want to learn more about myofascial release and
myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk
Clifden House Update
65
Case Study:
Verna Rose
In May 2014, Verna Rose, 87 was admitted to Clifden House
Dementia Care Centre, Seaford as an emergency. Five years
on, Verna’s niece, Valerie, shares their story and offers advice
to others who may find themselves in a similar situation.
My Aunt Verna is my father's sister, the youngest of four siblings.
Verna celebrated her 92ⁿ birthday in August.
Originally from Canada, Verna was always outgoing and athletic.
Although she never married nor had children, Verna had a very
tightknit group of five school friends - friendships that endured
for well over 70 years.
After qualifying as a teacher in her early twenties, Verna
travelled to Europe, eventually settling in Brixton, London, where
she worked as an art teacher in a number of schools.
After retiring, Verna moved to Seaford, East Sussex. She travelled
extensively, always discovering new hobbies and interests.
In 2013, her closest friend was the first to notice a change in
Verna. She found that Verna was not always clear of mind when
speaking on the phone. I then contacted her GP and social
services to arrange for Verna to be assessed in her home.
Following this Verna was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s
disease. Adaptations were made to her house and daily meal
deliveries arranged - all in an effort to assist with Verna’s desire
to remain at home.
She has been at Clifden House for five years now, and
occasionally still says that she wants to go home. Reassuringly,
in the next sentence she will say how happy she is at Clifden
House. I know that it is the right place for her to be.
Verna has benefited greatly by being at Clifden House. She used
her skills as an art teacher to collaborate with a local school to
produce a large textile peacock – it looked stunning. Recently,
Verna delivered a talk to local pupils about her experience of
WW2 - memories that she has no difficulties accessing.
I believe that these activities and daily stimulation has helped
slow the process of Alzheimer’s. Sadly, we have noticed a decline
in Verna over the last few months – but this was always inevitable.
Dementia is like losing the person dear to you, long before they
die. You must find the humour in the situation. Arguing or trying
to correct them, only causes distress - just agree or change the
topic. Enjoy each moment in that moment!
This year Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, Seaford,
celebrates 50 years of delivering exceptional care in Sussex.
As a leader in specialist dementia care it aims to facilitate
each person to continue to live a fulfilling and active life with
privacy, dignity and security.
www.clifdenhouse.co.uk T: 01323 896460
As is the nature of the disease, Verna continued to decline. By
May 2014 it was obvious that Verna was not coping at home. It
was very upsetting to see.
The following day, alarmed by a sudden drastic headache, Verna
called for an ambulance. She was admitted to hospital. With the
assistance of the hospital social services, and with my support,
Verna was placed in Clifden House, Seaford – a leading dementia
care centre.
Following a few weeks at Clifden House, social services
concluded that it was the best place for her to remain
permanently.
Initially, Verna would waver between being totally accepting of
the fact that she now lived at Clifden House to having moments
of wanting to go ‘home’.
One of my concerns was how Verna would adapt to living as part
of a community at Clifden House. To my relief, within the first
few months Verna’s overall health and brightness improved
greatly - she was eating three home cooked, nutritious meals a
day, taking her medications and being positively stimulated.
